Good website design programs

I am looking to design a website for my mother's store and was wondering if anyone knew of a good website design program. I am fairly new to Apple products.
Thanks

Give RapidWeaver a try. Excellent program and not expensive.

I have been using it for the last several years and it does everything one could ask, excellent support and a great community to back it up.

  • Good web design software to replace iWeb

    Hello There,
I have been using iWeb for a while now, and despite its limitations, I like it.  Now that Apple has discontinued (or will discontinue) MobileMe and some of the features wont be available any more, I decided to move to another web-design program.
I have downloaded the trial of rapidweaver (the one with the 3 page limit) so I could play with it and see what it was like.  It is HORRIBLE, it is not easy to use, importing pictures seems pretty impossible.  I cant insert pictures like I can in iWeb, I cant drag things around like I can in iWeb - the whole program seems to be template and text based.
    I don't really know how to do coding or anything, so I am not looking for a fancy web-design tool that costs a fortune.  But I want something that I can actually use.  I want to do the following;
Create pages from scratch if I want to
    Insert images and reposition them
Insert images into my text and aline them
    Have a blog
    Have a photo gallery
insert movies (when I want to share them)
    have a chat room
Have a nice looking site without having to do any serious heavy coding (because I don't really know how to)
Can someone please suggest to me a good website design program that is comparable to iWeb and with which I can replace the afore mentioned iWeb.  Eervyone says RapidWeaver, but I really didnt like it.

Just to promote iWeb for a bit more read the following in case you hadn't considered it:
As you now know iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store.  To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.
Now that being said there's been a lot of discussion on replacements to iWeb.  Most of the applications are template driven and make it difficult to start with a clean page.  Roddy has more experience in evalutating those apps.  I decided on Flux.  It's a drag and drop, WYSIWYG application with easy code insertion.  If you've ever added a  3rd party slideshow to an iWeb page with an HTML snippet you can view this Flux tutorial page on how I did it with Flux: F03 - Adding a SimpleViewer Slideshow to a Web Page or this tutorial on adding a multi page PDF document to a web page: F02 - Adding a PDF Document to a Web Page.
I have to admit it takes a little study but the video tutorials at the Flux site and those 3rd party videos on YouTube help quite a bit.
If you search this community for "iWeb alternatives" you should get a list of topics discussing the other alternatives.

  • Good website  for After Effects templates and stock footage in UK?

    Hello all,
Can anyone recommend a good websites for downloading AE templates and stock footage in the UK please. I see plenty of gt American companies/ websites  but I  am reluctant to use templates and videos that are mastered in 29 frames and not 25 frames (UK).
    Many Thanks
    Joel Watt

Session timeouts.... I really do think it's the server. AE doesn't care for specific network stuff, it's all just volumes/ drives to the program. To avoid these issues, you would have to shorten the refresh cycles on your server availability broadcasts or the "keep alive" cycles on the connection/ session settings themselves. I'd know how to do it on Win Server, but I have no clue with regards to XServe configuration. Still, certainly some simple console commands and a restart of the server software should be able to take care of the matter.

  • What is best software for website design on iMac?

What software can I best use for website design on my iMac?

RapidWeaver or Sandvox is what I recommend for most people - both require little to no knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, or CSS but can be used to create attractive websites with all the modern doodads. DreamWeaver is a powerful program with a very steep learning curve but well worth learning for professionals and power users. Even so, this power user uses RapidWeaver for most tasks today.

  • Why was yesterday the typefont Lato displaying good in design mode and today looks like Arial?

why was yesterday the typefont Lato displaying good in design mode and today looks like Arial? In preview mode its looking good

I'm having exactly the same problem as Kitcarhans just as of now, with the same font (Lato).
I tried to follow Abhishek's recommended steps, but they are unclear to me, and in any case, didn't have any effect.
"2. Rename the folders named tk1 and tk2 in the following locations"
Not sure what this step is instructing me to do; rename them to what new name? Any? The same?
"3. Launch Muse and add the font again"
The font was never removed… was it supposed to have been? Well, in any case, I tried removing and then re-adding, but no effect there either…
Could you clarify these instructions for me, or if they don't apply to the current problem, advise? The two websites I'm working on now both use Lato, so I can't do much of anything until I solve this problem…
    Thanks.

We're going to have to disagree on the definition of
    manufacture.
There are more meanings to the word. In its simplest form, it
    merely
    means to make.
    Dictionary.com:
    2. the making or producing of anything; generation
    5. to work up (material) into form for use
    American Heritage Dictionary:
    1. a. To make or process (a raw material) into a finished
    product,
especially by means of a large-scale industrial operation.
    2. To create, produce, or turn out in a mechanical manner
    Online Etymology Dictionary:
    something made by hand
    WordNet:
    1. the organized action of making of goods and services for
    sale
    Kenerman English Multilingual Dictionary:
to make, originally by hand but now usually by machinery and
    in large
    quantities
My point is that there ARE firms who are absolutely mass
    producing
websites. These are the folks who offer the "one from column
    A, one
from column B" sites, sometimes Flash and sometimes HTML.
    Minimal
labour, minimal customization - and these sites are most
    definitely
    marketed and priced as commodities.
It all comes down to what the business does and how it is
    marketed. Do
you make and sell a product: a website? Or do you sell a
    service?
My company sells a service. From all appearances, yours sells
    websites.
Not sure how we got on this track from what the office looks
    like.

  • My Macbook Pro shuts down when using design programs

I bought the macbook pro about 3 months ago. The shut down screen appeared and asked me to shut down the computer several times when I am using design programs (like photoshop, illustrator cs2 and macromedia flash 8...) since i bought computer. I can't do anything except forcing the computer to shut down, and it's not good for the computer if i have to do this often. The computer is fairly new, and it really upsets me with this problem.

  • 20/20 design program

Is anyone out there successfully running 20/20 design program on a mac of any kind. I tried it several yrs. ago with a new G4 powerbk and virtual PC with little success.
I abandoned it and ran it as usual on my PC.
I just purchased a new macbk and have hopes that it will work this time.

Running Windows on a Mac through Boot Camp is just like running Windows on any other PC. So if the software runs good on your PC, it will run just as well if not better on your Mac through Boot Camp.

  • Design program compatible with Avery stationery?

    Hello!
I have been soooooooo frustrated with the Avery Design and Print program for the following reason:
It will NOT allow me to import or use any of the hundreds of fonts on my computer and instead offers me the Design and Print's paltry selection.
Am wondering if there is another more flexible design program I can use that is compatible with the Avery stationery.
I would very much appreciate any advice out there!

Would you pay $20 for Labelist 8. It is in the OS X App Store, and their website has a free, 30-day, fully functional trial download.

  • Is "TuneupMyMac" a good and safe program to use?

Is "TuneupMyMac" a good and safe program to use?

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
    4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most users don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

    Here are a few:
This may not show as actual errors, but your <head>
    section has a
LOT of redundant code. Multiple links to identical .js and
    .css
    files, duplicated JavaScript code, etc...
In your template "BottomRight" region, you have several items
    that
belong above the </head> at the top of the page.
    However, since they
already do exist there, you can delete them completely.
    Specifically
the link to AdelanteStyles.css and that whole block of
    JavaScript.
Get rid of the <body> element in that section, too. You
    can only
have one body in a Web page.
Since you're using XHTML 1.0 Transitional (do you need to?)
    you have
    several <br> that should be <br />
After that, I /think/ the only thing left (outside of Flash
    stuff)
might be adding a </p> just before the <form>.
    Could be wrong,
    though.

  • Taking recommendations for good sync/backup program (other than Time Machine)

    Hello everyone,
I'm on the lookout for a good file synchronization program (other than Time Machine) which I can use to make one-way backups of specific subdirectories. The ideal program would do the following:
    1) Do one-way synchronization of user-selectable subdirecotries within a directory A to directory B either on same hard drive or on external hard drive
    2) Can be set up to make sure that B has the exact subdirectories/files as A, deleting any that are not present in A and adding anything that is added to A or anything that has been changed in A
    3) Will not generate useless junk files that require me to manually clean up after them
    4) Will not alter files and directories in A in any way
    5) Will be inexpensive
    6) Will not interfere with Time Machine, which I already use to backup multiple volumes to a single external hard drive.
I checked the App store first, but was disappointed that all three apps had mixed reviews, and none had recent reviews attesting to their efficacy (which I always interpret as a bad sign).
I also did a quick search for third-party programs, but their websites will only have good reviews, so naturally I'm checking here first.
Basically, I want this program so that I can use it to sychronize files to my Cloud (Box, Google Docs, Dropbox) directory to share with my friends, and also to make redundant backups of sensitive files to additional external hard drives not being utilized by Time Machine.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

CCC can be set up to copy just selected directories, or the entire disk.  It does not need to make a full clone (although a full clone is a good way to have*something* that functions in case of emergency).
I take the approach of using a tool that can do much more than simple because it can do *that much more* in a pinch.
I gave my best advice, and have not investigated in more specialized tools.
    Good luck to you.

  • Ideas for a Website Design with DW 5

New to webiste and looking for ideas on website design.  I have a logo and will have products with pictures and descriptions.  Should I use DW pre-design ideas or should I use my own.  I'm not sure how to on my own design, but I might be able to get help through friends.  All ideas and suggestion on how to get started are appreciated.

If you're new to HTML and CSS in general, I highly recommend learning code basics first.  This will make DW CS5 much easier to work with.  Start slow.  Learn new things in stages.  Build 3 or 4 test pages before you tackle a real project.
    Start here:
    HTML & CSS Tutorials - http://w3schools.com/
Adobe  Developer's Center - Getting Started tutorials
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/?view=gettingstarted
When you're comfortable with the DW interface, it is very helpful to start a new project with a pre-built CSS layout that works in all browsers. You can learn a lot from examining the code, too.
Have a look at PVII's CSS Templates or Page Packs.  (NOTE: I have no affiliation with the company; just happen to like their products).
