GPS Accuracy?

I've had an iPod Touch since it was released almost a year ago, and have been using the map feature from the day it was released for the touch.
I was always amazed at how well the iPod touch could find its location (given it was within wifi range).
I got an iPhone 3G friday... It's almost comical sometimes. Typically, when I try to locate my current position, it works fine. When I try to do it from my home, however, it says I'm in Philadelphia. I've got nothing against the city, but it is 2500 miles away from where I actually am.
I've also stood in an open field, with no tall buildings nearby, for 30 minutes while the phone was (again) putting me in Philly, time after time.
Most of the time it's reasonably good... I'm fine with a 300 foot accuracy most of the time.
But there's quite a difference between 300 feet and 2500 miles. It was funny to look at the map one minute, and be in my hometown, and three minutes later, I was in Philly. Not even the Space Shuttle flies that fast...
So is this kind of accuracy typical for an iPhone 3G?

No, what you are seeing is not typical. I'd suggest a visit to the Genius Bar and have them take a look.

    Hi tonyl
Improve your GPS receiver's view of the sky and your occurrence of multipath interference will decrease; loss of contact with just one satellite can cause indicated position to jump 20metre in addition to expected ±10metre error.
    Ionospheric effects ± 5 metre
    Ephemeris errors ± 2.5 metre
Satellite clock errors ± 2 metre
    Multipath distortion ± 1 metre
    Tropospheric effects ± 0.5 metre
Numerical errors ± 1 metre or less
On a negative note as solar flare activity increases up to 2011/12 you can expect degradation of GPS reception. At the last peak there were very GPS receivers compared with the expected situation next time around!

  • 6110 navigator GPS accuracy

My 6110 GPS is not accurate to use with map coordinates it is usually about 10Kms out. The Route 66 works perfectly. Does anyone know a fix?

Umm ... I think you need to get your GPS fixed.
10Km is way off for any GPS, even if you are above the 74th parallel, where magnetic correction is needed for good accuracy (GPS coordinates are pure ECEF -Earth Centric Earth Fix). However, your map cartography for roads should take this into account, and even if this is not the case, 10Km is way off.

  • Have others noticed accuracy of gps in iPhone degrade with ios5.01?

Since I upgraded my iPhone 4 with ios5.01 the gps function in things like map it seems much worse. It used to be very good before upgrade.  It says to turn on wifi to improve accuracy but that is of no use when in car.  I like others have also seen battery life degrade and I have seen fixes for that but any thoughts on the gps accuracy?  Thanks,

You need to transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer per the instructions included with this link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
If you don't do this per the instructions included with the link, all iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased with the first sync. If you haven't transferred photos from your old computer to your new, any photos on your iPhone that were transferred from your previous computer will be erased when selecting to transfer any photos from your new computer.
Not sure how cancelling a sync with iTunes and importing photos/videos from the Camera Roll with iPhoto could have an effect on your GPS reception and location services.

  • Lumia GPS tracking accuracy

Hi, Im having a problem with altitude GPS accuracy while using any of GPS tracking applications on my Lumia 720.
It seems like the phone is able the find the right altitude, for example 252 m, but it randomly drops to 36 m, then 252 m, then drops to 50 m and so on.
It doesn't depend on application, it's the same story in sports tracker, endomondo, runkeeper...
When chcecking the altitude in GPSInfo app it shows vertical accuracy 5m, so the gps signal is fine, but the altitude is fluctuating even when i'm not moving.
You can see how it looks in endomondo in attached jpeg - the road was almost flat, no elevation at all.
Is this only my phone's issue?
    Solved!

    Hello!
Peter who developed the App Hike&Bike was able to fix this altitude jumping bug. It is needed to use DesiredAccuracyInMeters with a value of 1. Same as mentioned by Ray Krebs on wpdev.uservoice.com.
Regarding the altitude accuracy itself it is true that this will never be perfect. But jumping from
140 to 21 meters and back is not a problem of viewable satellites. On same place an older Nokia 700 has "stable" altitude values and gives the information that 9 satellites are in view.
Peter will release a new version of Hike&Bike after finishing some beta tests. Hopefully other developer will switch to this way.
    Best regards!
    Simon

  • GPS Issues - Accuracy/Inaccuracy

I've been using my S3 for about a month now and I'm experiencing issues with the GPS' accuracy when using Google Maps/Navigation - it says I'm anywhere  from 50-500ft+ away from where I'm actually located. This has become a big issue when trying to use my phone for navigation.
Anyone else having this same issue? If so, is there a fix for this?

Not an expert here, but generally, your accuracy is going to be a function of how many satellites your phone sees.
My phone reports an accuracy of about 12ft or so. Even in doors it will see 8 or more sats.
First thing you probably want to check is if your phone's time is close to network time, because I think the data pulled from the network (this is Assisted GPS, or AGPS) is accurate. Make sure your phone is set to the proper time zone.
Next, download a program like GPS Status and Toolbox, and GPS Test (I recommend the one by Mike Lockwood). Use the second program to Inject the Time and the Xtra Data used for establishing the first fix. In the former program, its the first number that indicates the sats it sees. In the latter program, I believe it is the lines with "U" on the status line for "used".
When I use Maps or GNav, or GPS Test, and I'm lookng at a map, I'm merely a few feet typically from where the cursor is located, and you should really expect the same.
Although it might result in some configuration loss, it really might be worth your while backing up your important information, writing down your email server settings, etc, and doing a Factory Data Reset (FDR). 50ft error is I think unacceptable because in CONUS you should be within 10s of feet of your actual location,  500feet means there are other issues.

  • E72 - Time for a new firmware to polish the GPS

031 has been out for a long time. The E72 is by far the most stable Nokia I have owned (the first firmware was actually functional which is a rarity) but it is now time for it to get polished a bit better.
There are many, many pending corrections but I'm particularly waiting for an improvement of the GPS accuracy. It's not as bad as the GPS units of other phones but it is also far from good... my Nokia 6220 Classic is much older and has better GPS performance (tracks have less errors, you can check this with apps like RaceChrono).
There's also the encryption issues, mail, wifi stability and so on.
    C'mon Nokia.. it's flashing time.

Actually, as soon as I added that one line, iTunes updated the podcast within a few minutes. The odd thing is that I had the explicit tag in every <item> and it worked fine for the first five episodes.
Now, I'm waiting - and exploring - what is taking so long for the graphic/logo to show up. Another odd thing, this: At first I had one image, then I changed it, but overlooked the fact that I had the image tag in both <image> and <itunes:image> and only changed one. Now, I have only the itunes:image in the file and it hasn't shown up yet (5 episodes later). But I saw your other post, and maybe I do need to include both image tags. I'll try it for the next episode.
Thanks for all the help you provide here, Roger.

  • GPS apps take me to a place I've never been

When I've got crappy accuracy (most of the time) any GPS based app will take me to a place about 5 miles from my house that I've never been to in my life. Ever. It's the same place and every GPS app shows me in this spot. Some of the apps that have exhibited this behavior are: Google Map, Trails, EveryTrail, MotionX GPS, and on and on. Since this occurs in all apps I've pretty much determined that it's a hardware issue. I was really hoping that a reset of my 3GS would cure this problem but no.
I updated to iOS 4 and that went well. I thought maybe that would do the trick but no joy there either.
This is really frustrating because I use my iPhone and Trails app to log and keep track of my daily walk/runs. In the middle of a run the GPS accuracy will go in the crapper and I'll all of the sudden be transported (in the app) to this phantom spot about 5 miles away from where I'm at adding, you guessed it, 5 miles to my walk/run.
I really want to get rid of this spot. Is there anyway for me to get rid of it? Is there a setting that controls this? Why does my phone insist on showing me this spot and claiming I'm there when GPS accuracy *****? As I've said, I've never been to this place!
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Joe

Initially, this sounds more of an environmental issue than a hardware.
A couple of things to ask..
Does the glitch only happen in your area? If you go for a drive 50 or 100kms away and use it in that area, does the location go off somewhere in that area too and put show you in a strange place after a period of time? Or does this issue seem to only happen in your area?
Also when it goes off to this other place, if you do nothing and just keep walking, running or what ever you are doing, does it eventually find you again in the correct location?
I'm wondering if you are a getting a conflict between the GPS location and the Cell Tower/WiFi locations when you are in a certain place and one overrides the other.

  • Iphone 4 gps doesn't work properly

I'm using two running apps and signal from gps goes absolutely erratic in both. The tracks I'm recording are in the center of a 1.5 millon inhabitants town in Spain. Any answer?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello jmvaldesc,
It sounds like your running apps are not tracking your location properly on your iPhone.  I found an article that has steps to improve GPS accuracy:
    Improving GPS accuracy
GPS accuracy varies depending on the number of visible GPS satellites. Locating all visible satellites can take several minutes, with accuracy gradually increasing over time. Use these tips to improve GPS accuracy:
Ensure the date, time, and time zone are correctly set on the device in Settings > General > Date & Time. If possible, use Set Automatically.
Important: Incorrect settings on your computer can sync to your device. Verify the date, time, and time zone on any computer that syncs with your device.
    Restart your device.
Verify that you have a cellular or Wi-Fi network connection. This allows the Assisted GPS (A-GPS) on the device to locate visible GPS satellites faster, in addition to providing initial location information using the Wi-Fi or cellular networks.
Note: Microcells (sometimes called Femtocells) are not supported with Location Services.
Maintain a clear view of the horizon in several directions. Keep in mind that walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, mountains, and other obstructions can block line of sight to GPS satellites. When this occurs, your device will automatically use Wi-Fi or cellular networks to determine your position, until the GPS satellites are visible again.

  • GPS on iPhone4 Sometimes doesn't work

    Hi Everyone.
I have an iPhone4 which was purchased from Koodo. When I used google map to navigate, sometimes the gps couldn't figure out where I was.
The arrow was off the street and it stopped moving. I had to reboot my iphone to make it work. It has happened about 4-5 times in a month. Most of the time, it is fine. BTW, when I use automatic time zone, it never works I had another iPhone4 (unlocked from Apple Store) which never had such problem.
The IOS is up to date. I called Apple store asking for an exchange. They said no coz I got it from Koodo rather than Apple Store. They asked me to sign up the Genesis Bar instead.
Did anyone have a similar situation before?
Thank you very much for your help.

  • IPhone 3g - GPS No longer functioning

    Hi,
I noticed a few days ago that I could no longer get a GPS lock using my iPhone 3G. Google Maps would provide a cross hairs location, but never a 'blue dot' indicating GPS lock. I have several other GPS apps installed, including iTrail, Trackthing and GPSKit. In each case these apps each showed no GPS lock, and no position accuracy greater than about 125 meters - which seemed to be location information based on wi-fi triangulation rather than GPS.
I originally attributed this to a software problem. I saw various references to turning 3G on and off / turning wifi on and off / resetting the network settings on the Phone etc. in these forums and elsewhere. I tried every one to no avail.
Finally I decided a complete firmware and software refresh might do the trick. As I was running firmware 2.2 at the time, I connected the phone to iTunes on my MacBook Pro and upgraded the firmware to 2.2.1, and restored all the apps back to it.
After this upgrade the phone was still unable to obtain a GPS lock (whether in Google Maps or any other GPS / location aware app) despite being left outside with a clear view of the sky for over 15 minutes at a time. It would get a lock using celltower and wifi triangulation, but only to an accuracy of 125 metres at best as before. Certainly no 'blue dot' in Google Maps.
Still thinking this might be a software error, I have now reset the phone completely using iTunes, and have not restored the apps onto it. It now has just firmware 2.2.1 (activated through iTunes) and that's it. Again I have tried getting a 'blue dot' GPS fix in Google Maps, but despite another 20 minutes basking in my garden, the phone still will not get a GPS lock. Again, wifi / celltower is the best it will get.
I am now thinking that it is a hardware problem, and that the GPS hardware in my phone is not working for whatever reason. Before I take the phone back to an Apple store, can anyone recommend anything else that might get it working?
    Thanks,
    G

Out of curiosity, how did they test/verify it? My GPS is no longer accurate, it gets the general location with an error circle of varying size, but rarely a nice radar blip lock. My local apple store is in the mall, so I don't know what kind of GPS accuracy they would expect in there anyway. I did take some screenshots of my big error circle while driving the major highway in the area.
Anybody know what would cause it to lose accuracy? Again, it gets my general area, but not nearly as well as it used to.
    Thanks

  • N97 GPS Problems - Hardware or Software?

Sorry to start yet another thread on the N97 GPS problems, but reading through all the threads there seems not to be any clear conclusion as to whether or not the issue is a software/firmware one, in which case potentially fixable, or a hardware one, in which case the phones have to be sent back and replaced.
My personally feeling is that it's hardware.  Some people have no issue but many have a problem.   I have the same issues with losing the satellites, poor GPS accuracy, etc. both with Ovi Maps 3.01 and with Google Maps, which again to me points to a hardware fault.  Updating firmware from v10 to v11 made no difference to GPS performance.
So, I wonder if people agree with me that it is a hardware issue and the phones have to go back, or if there is some hope of it being a software issue and thus being fixed?
Anyone had any success in sending back an N97 for replacement because if the GPS issue? Mine is a UK 3 branded N97 black, free as part of a contract, and I have a feeling that 3 are likely to resist replacing the phone if they can.
    Mark

I believe that the GPS problem in N97 not a hardware problem but a software problem with the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.
    Below explanation why:
I have been using Nokia Maps 2.0 on my previous phone – E71 for more than one year. It worked pretty well and stable. One important remark – it is important to configure the server for AGPS under Settings well...
About one and half month ago I decided to install on my E71 the newest Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.0. And ... immediately my problems started. The GPS performance worsened – I was continuously getting messages about GPS lost, recalculating and usually concluding that I am on a parallel road to the road which I was actually driving – horrible...
Also my colleague with N82 made the same mistake (installed Maps 3.0) and got the same problems.
Because of this problems I have removed this new version on my E71 and went back to Nokia Maps 2.0. And guess what? - The problems were gone!
Two weeks ago I bought my N97. It comes only with Maps 3.1 so I was expecting problems. And ... indeed I have them all. Bad thing is however that I cannot go back to Maps 2.0 on N97...
I tested GPS accuracy with three different phones (N97, E71, E75) and two versions of Nokia Maps. What I can see is that its normal to be about 80-100 meters on average. This is not a specific N97 issue! And apparently should not be a problem because Nokia Maps 2.0 works great even if this application shows accuracy of 100 m. Probably thanks to the Assisted GPS.
So my conclusion is that it is not a hardware problem but a problem with (a part of) the software of the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.x ! Maybe with a GPS Driver? Or the functionality of the assisted GPS?

  • E52 and LD-4W Bluetooth GPS module ?

Does the Nokia E52 support the LD-4W Bluetooth GPS module ?
I'm aware of the builtin A-GPS in the E52, however, it seems using the LD-4W for GPS has benefits in terms of GPS accuracy as well as conseving the phones battery.
     Reinhard

On the E71 i use the LD-4W.... and i can confirm that accuracy is much better... and time to first fix is much lower. Only few problems with sometimes unstable Bluetooth connection... but this is an issue i have with all bluetooth connections, so it seems to be the phone......

    Hello eamt,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when you are using apps that use GPS.  It sounds like you are seeing some inaccuracy when using these apps.  I recommend the following steps to improve GPS accuracy:
