GPS project

Hello,
following the recent keynote, I'm delighted to see the GPS as part of the specs. Especially since I worked the past week on a new project http://www.sharepoz.com/en/
It's a website that stores GPS positions of users and provides an API to send or retrieve these positions. The aim of the website is to store the positions and also to control which application can access the user's data.
I see many useful applications with such kind of data:
- track friend's position in real-time on a map
- receive an alert when a friend gets close to you
- distance, speed
Why an API ?
Many websites/applications can find good use for the user's GPS position. But not all of them can develop an iPhone app nor can the user run all of them at the same time. On the contrary, the API can receive the position from the phone and then forward it to the many other applications the user gave the right to obtain its position.
I did develop the API and the website for the user to grant access to the applications but unfortunately I do not have the skills to build the iPhone app.
Is anyone interested in creating this app ?
I wrote a basic documentation for API methods on http://www.sharepoz.com/en/developer
Example:
Query : HTTP GET http://www.sharepoz.com/api.php?d=select&k=11-1-cbc606a7d3b35c281cc2f547baa6d3e0 The "k" argument is specific to user + application.
Result (PHP output, I'm working on JSON, XML and TEXT outputs) :
<pre>Array
\[result\] => Array
\[time\] => 1212590932
\[latitude\] => 2.26817
\[longitude\] => 48.8526
)</pre>
Thank you

I have working code available, ready to be publish but I think it should be free and I do not know how I can make money with this.
I am trying to find somebody to help me pay my bill. Perhaps you or your company can sponsor this project?
By the way, are you French? (French language in your site)
I am French born, living in the US since 1988.

    How can I import Canon imbeded GPS location from one picture in project to remaining pictures in project?

    If you have several photos taken at the same location you can use the Lift&Stamp tool to copy the GPS data to the other images.
    Seelct the image, press the "Lift" button, deselect all tags in the Lift&Stamp HUD but the GPS coordinates, then select all photos taken at the same place and and press the "Stamp" tool. (marked by the down arrow)
    Alternately use the "Places View". You will see the photos with a GPS location marked by a pin. Drag the photos you want to assign to the same place simply to that pin on the map and they will be assigned to the same place.

  • How to export project(s) with GPS data

    I tried to export a project with GPS metadata but when I import that project (as a library) into my Aperture on my iMac, no GPS data...
    Am I missing something obvious??
    Adam

    Hello Adam,
    First of all - shift-L does NOT bring up the lift and stamp HUD on my Aperture 3...in fact, on the menu, it has no keyboard shortcut.
    That is surprising for me, perhaps in my list of questions I should also have asked for your OS and exact Aperture Version. I tried this with OS Lion 10.7.2 and Aperture 3.2.1.
    But you found how to bring forward the Lift&Stamp HUD, so that is not so important right now.
    It is really good to know that you see GPS data on your images. Those you should be able to export.
    I apply your smart album and it's rules, that image shows up...so if I see latitude/longitude data in the metadata tab, why does your smart album pull it out??
    Probably your GPS tags contain Latitude/Longitude allright, but not the GPS version.
    Remove the rule '"GPS Version" is empty' from the smart album, then you will see only those images that don't even have Latitude or Longitude. Hopefully that are not too many.
    I guess from my perspective, if I either assign a "place" for my pictures or import GPS info from my Garmin, shouldn't that put the right metadata in so that it could be exported properly?? If not, when I move these images to my iMac I will have to redo ALL my places...which doesn't make sense...
    Sorry if I'm not getting it...
    sorry, if I am not explaining properly...
    I have done some experiments right now with my current Aperture version 3.2.1 and surprise, surprise! Seems I have to eat my words.
    In this version 3.2.1 assigning a place to an image seems also to set the GPS EXIF data, not only the places name as IPICT. What a relieve!  I used to have to assign Places data over over again, because the places information would not be recognized by my other applications. So my advice to you is to upgrade to 3.2.1 if you have not done so.
    I suspect the GPS data you see without "GPS Version"-tags are those you created manually in Places, wheras any other GPS data with GPS Version Tag come from your imported Garmin tracks.
    I have to make further experiments with this new behaviour before I can feel confident to give advice, and I could use a helping hand here. Anyone?
    @Kirby Krieger: I see you have been looking in on this thread, could you please confirm if this new places behaviour is also true in SL, if you have time?
    Sofar I tested the following with several folders and it worked beautifully: Try it.
    Export the folder from Aperture as a Library:   File -> Export -> Project as a library
    Reimport it to Aperture on your other machine: File -> Import -> Library/Project

    Hi Naill,
    First I have to say thankyou for your answer.
    About my (1) question, My image fields have set to be a embedded data and I try to test many example script of image fields.I can get image content type, image size. But that not work when I used ImageField1.desc.embeddedHref.value. It's response as "Unknown Embedded URI". Therefore, image field is and embedded data. How can I access filename?
    (2) In that forum. As I see, his problem is about how to automate change image field with href image file. But I want to extract an exist embedded image in PDF form to normal image file with original metada (such as extract image filed to .JPEG with GPS data. Same as before attached in PDF form.). There has any concept or solution in this problem?

  • Aperture 3 and GPS logs

    According to the manual, Aperture 3 can place photos on a map based on camera GPS data, or else manually by clicking on a map.
    I have a camera that doesn't support GPS and was hoping I could find a solution where Aperture can add GPS EXIF data based on importing from a GPS log (from a dedicated GPS device) and comparing timestamps.
    Do any such plugins exist for Aperture 3?
    (BTW, I've read people's iPhone-related solutions, and that is not going to work for me since I will be roaming in places where the iPhone's accuracy will be called into question...not to mention I'd have to remember to snap an iPhone photo at every waypoint along the way.)

    1. GPS Track file: I use "GPS Tracker" (free, app store) on my iPhone to store the GPS track logs on instamapper.com (free). Define the trip and download the track file (in .gpx format).
    2. I took about 200 pictures over 3 days on my Nikon D100 onto a CF card.
    3. I opened Aperture 3 and imported the images into a new project. I clicked on (Places) button. Used the [GPS] drop down and selected "Import GPS track" (this drew the track nicely!). Selected all images. And dragged the selected images to the track. Aperture asked to assign locations based on time. I selected (Assign Locations). None of the images were assigned the correct locations I removed the images from Aperture.
    Marc Vose wrote:
    Just wondering which program you're using to actually bring the images off the camera in this scenario.
    4. I placed the CF card into the usb CF reader and copied the images to a folder using the finder.
    5. I installed exiftool (link: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/) and issued the terminal command:
    $ exiftool -geotag=/Users/kent/Downloads/Vacation-2010-02-AZ.gpx .
    This tagged all the images in the directory using the track file Vacation-2010-02-AZ.gpx
    6. I imported the images into Aperture, clicked on the [Places] button. And all the images have been correctly placed.
    7. I burn the raw images to dvd before formatting the CF card (send off-site for backup .
    The GPS track support still needs some work in Aperture - but is it nice to be able to work with location information on the images.

  • Load GPS log into Aperture : why altitude is lost ?

    Hello,
         I was trying to get rid of the external programs I used to join GPS information to my photos by replacing them with the "places" function of Aperture.
    After a bit of headscratching due to poor results, I found a Feb.2010 discussion where user mvanderbilt posted this :
    --- quote ---
    This is how I got Aperture 3 to assign correct locations to my photos using a GPX file (in my case, from a Garmin GPS device)
    1) Import the GPX track data. You should see a purple line on the Places map.
    2) Pick one of the photos in a project for which you know the location.
    3) Drag that photo onto the correct spot -- Aperture helps you by showing the difference between the photo time and the GPX time. The clock on either of those devices may be off, or in the wrong timezone, and this first photo placement calibrates the timing for the rest
    4) After you choose the location Aperture 3 will ask if you want to assign the locations of the other photos based on time. Click on "assign location" and the rest of the pictures will be placed relative to the location of the photo you located in step 3.
    I wish the manual was more clear on this. It took a while to figure out what Aperture was doing, and my photos were often assigned to incorrect locations (but in retrospect, Aperture was doing what I told it to do).
    -- unquote --
    Well, tried with these instructions and apparently now everything is fine but........ where is the altitude data ?
    I mean, my GPS logger duly write in its NMEA0183 file latitude, longitude AND altitude : why Aperture seems to recognize only latitude and longitude and NOT the altitude ?
    I am sure of the logger because if I still use GPSPhotolinker all data are correctly transferred so, either I'm still doing something wrong or Aperture do not recognize the information.
    Any hint / help ?
    Many thanks to everybody & have a nice day.

    Writing the elevation data is quite simple, so I do not understand why Aperture is not able to do it.
    Personally I think the best software available out there is Exiftool, and if you want  a more user friendly application that uses exiftool and does a good job at geotagging, try photolinker
    G'day jgcmac
    I've been trialling photolinker to add geotagging data to images before importing into aperture. It's really good however the altitude data won't show up when manually tagging the images. Does this only work if you've got a log file (GPX) from a data logger?

  • How to assign GPS / Places to photos without GPS?

    I have a lot of pictures from my recent holiday in aperture and there are some iPhone 3GS Pics with GPS data amongst them.
    Now I somehow dont manage to use the GPS Data from the iPhone Photos to assign those places to the Photos without GPS.
    Do I have to give the Place a name or what firs? It didnt work for me to give other names to the places which have iPhone Location GPS than the names given.
    In short: i dont know how to do it and i didnt find ressources anyway, can somebody help?
    thanks, alexander

    Have you tried reading the Aperture manual?
    You can assign a Place to all the photos in one project by entering the GPS information for the project once:
    *Assigning Location Information to Projects*
    If all the images in a project were shot in the same location, you can save time by assigning location information to the project in Projects view. Rather than selecting images in the Browser and assigning them a location, you can assign the location to the project. Assigning a location to a project assigns the location to all versions in the project.
    To quickly assign a location to all versions in a project
    In the Library inspector, select Projects.
    The Aperture main window switches to Projects view.
    Click the Info button for the project to which you want to assign the location.
    The Info HUD appears.
    In the Info HUD, click Assign Location.
    In the dialog that appears, enter a specific address or the name of a place, a city or town, or a significant geographical location such as a national park in the search field.
    Google searches for the location you entered in the search field and displays a list of search results. Place names that match the text you entered are displayed at the top of the search results list, and Google search matches are displayed under Google Results.
    Select the search result that matches the location you are looking for.
    If you would like to give the location a custom name, enter a name in the Place Name field.
    Click Assign.
    The selected location is assigned to every image in the project.

  • IPhoto events and Aperture projects

    What happens to iPhoto events and Aperture projects in Photos? I have read that Events and Projects are not available in the new Photos app. My library is entirely organised this way. If Photos is organised just by date, then will all my years of sorting be lost?

    If, like me, you used Events as your main organizational tool - you will really be disappointed in Photos.   My Albums transferred, but I had over 100,000 pictures, taken over 13 years and organized mostly by the "Event/Title" line above each group of pictures.   Those titles did not transfer to Photos.
    They do have an Album titled iPhoto Events and a lot of events are in there - however, not all and they are in a completely random order.   In my case, over 3,000 events with absolutely no way to find anything other than scroll through or possibly search.  Also, at this time there is no way to move forward with Event organization as it does not exist.   There is not way in Photos to label each days photos with an event or title.   It's like one big huge shoebox with date order the only organization.  Ridiculous.
    I mostly use a 35mm SLR Camera without any GPS designation - so I now have 109,000 photos in one big list organized by nothing but the date taken or scanned.
    I have also scanned a lot of family history photos and old family photos - fortunately I put most of those in Albums - otherwise Photos is very excited to just list them according to the date I scanned them which has nothing to do with the content of the photo.
    Definitely back up your iPhoto before you do anything.   I am looking for an outside program that will continue my organization and not throw everything out on the whim of people who just use photos for social media and sharing.   This change made me realize that Apple has no intention of creating and keeping a serious organization system for amateur and professional photographers who have a large number of files that need to be organized and kept for many years.

  • Where should I put GPS data with each photo?

    Today I am starting to load images into Aperture - the beginning of an 18 month project filming in all 92 counties of Indiana. When I shoot, I write down the GPS location and need to keep it with all photos. It would not be a keyword, where would I store this info?
    Still trying to figure out how to apply the same keywords to a group of photos - I will figure it out soon.
    Mac Pro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   XT 1900, 4GB RAM, 4 500GB HDs, Nikon D70

    indianamusic,
    This is what I suggest. Having worked with GPS data for a while it is certainly the best solution. I will give you a few reasons at the end of this post.
    1. Get GPSPhotolinker. It is free.
    2. Create a plain text file with the following information.
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <gpx
    version="1.0"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd">
    <time>2004-09-23T23:45:44Z</time>
    <trk>
    <name>Location Name</name>
    <trkseg>
    <trkpt lat="54.602780" lon="-5.884941">
    <time>2004-07-29T21:27:14Z</time>
    </trkpt>
    </trkseg>
    </trk>
    </gpx>
    3. Repeat the following entry for each different location you have.
    <name>Location Name</name>
    <trkseg>
    <trkpt lat="54.602780" lon="-5.884941">
    <time>2004-07-29T21:27:14Z</time>
    </trkpt>
    </trkseg>
    4. Load a few photos into GPSPhotoLinker and use the manual option to embed the GPS data into your files.
    5. Import these into Aperture.
    So why do it this way?
    1. EXIF contains important information such as time; location is important, and by doing it this way you can embed the GPS (and thanks to GPSPhotoLinker State/Country names) automatically; when you import the photos into Aperture you won't actually have to enter the state etc.
    2. A file with EXIF data, when uploaded to Flickr, is automatically georeferenced and will display on the Flickr map.
    3. You can use an amazing script (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4550472#4550472) that Ian wrote to view your photos on google maps right from within Aperture. If you store the GPS info in a custom field, you certainly wouldn't be able to do this!
    Hope this helps, have a great trip and write again if you need more help!

  • Export with Metadata does not write EXIF Lens & GPS info

    I use the Olympus E-3.
    I've worked an entire project with Aperture 2 (now at 2.1.2), only to find out eventually that when exporting, aperture does not write the Lens info, and GPS section of the EXIF. This is bread and butter for me.
    Did a search in the forum, and there was 1 other who encounter the same problem..
    http://www.trick77.com/2009/02/01/aperture-doesnt-export-all-exif-header-info/
    the workaround was to copy EXIF from the original file, using Exiftool with GUI on windowsXP. The result being that Adobe bridge and LR can read, while aperture cannot read.

    I also encounterd this annoying problem... I just posted another message about this...

  • FCSvr & GPS data

    Hi all
    I'm planning to include a GPS mark for every tripod location on my next project. And wonder if FCSvr can help me.
    After shooting and post, clips (and metadata) are moved to a WEB server feeding a site that shows landscapes, and camera location for each shot.
    Could something like this be somehow streamlined into the workflow?
    I want to get the GPS info as metadata on the clip, say with an iPhone or GPS device and a clip based recorder (I'm planning to use the Ki Pro)
    Then, bring clips with GPS data to FCSvr. Add more metadata, Color correct and touch-up, transcode, distribute to designated devices and backup.
    Can FCSvr running on a MacPro do the job? Main storage will be a fast RAID on the MacPro. The copy of the database for the WEB sever, will be hosted on a XServe-Xserve RAID combo. Max 4 seats for editing and metadata entry.
    Thanks alot

    Final Cut Server recognizes XMP metadata for Latitude and Longitude. You can map this XMP metadata to custom metadata fields. I got this to work with some jpegs, but I don't think you can attach the same metadata to Quicktime movies.

  • How to write EXIF/GPS data to masters?

    I have an Aperture library captured with a non-GPS camera. I added geotagging data through Aperture, but am now migrating to Lightroom. Obviously I want to import my masters into Lightroom without losing geotagging/GPS information, but it's also obvious that Aperture will not write EXIF data to masters (other than time/date, and it doesn't seem to be doing that right, either).
    I have installed the Maperture plugin, and while Maperture can see my Aperture-made geotags, it will only write GPS data to masters if you change the Aperture data: simply clicking the "save" button without altering the geotag results in no action.
    I also have the trial version of HoudahGeo installed. This won't seem to do the job, either, as it only recognizes about 70% of my pictures. For example, if I select an Aperture project with 17,000 images (all geotagged), it only recognizes the library as containing 11,000 images. Even worse, it only recognizes about 1,000 of those images as containing GPS data.
    Are there any other options for writing this GPS data to my masters? Thanks for your assistance.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Karen.
    My library has been rebuilt recently, so I don't think it's a library issue. It affects all project, and it's not a matter of it simply not recognizing alternate versions or stacks. It just simply is recognizing about 30-40% of the pictures in any given library.
    On other issue I'm having with Aperture is that it isn't handling date and time adjustments very well: in addition to adjusting the time/date in the way requested, it also shifts the time zone to my current time zone, EST. For example, I might have an image from China with the EXIF time of 7:30pm, UTC+8. I use "Adjust Time and Date" to set the time to 8:00pm. The end result is an image with the time of 8:00am, UTC-4 (EST). While the adjustment has offset the time by the correct amount, it has also changed the time zone for some reason. I understand that a simply workaround would simply be to use the time zone adjustment to achieve the same effect, but it's not always possible and shouldn't be necessary. I very much doubt this has anything to do with he HoudahGeo issue, though.
