GPU-version of Gaussian Blur sometimes produces visible ringing artifacts on high contrast images

Hi,
I noticed some annoying ringing artifacts in my footage after applying the GaussianBlur() from the PrSDKGPUImageProcessingSuite.
I assume the blur implementation is the same as in the 'Gaussian Blur' Video Effect. So I tested with that effect standalone and was able reproduce the problem.
The ringing artifacts appear in high contrasted footage (see screenshots) and only with the GPU-version of the blur.
Switching to software-only renderer and therefore enforcing the CPU-version of the effect removes the artifacts.
Has anybody already noticed this issue?
Regards,
Philipp
Gaussian Blur (CPU) without artifacts:
Gaussian Blur (GPU) with artifacts:

The "blocky" details are easily reproduced in that image.  Looks like something that needs to be tuned up to me.
Note that you have the option of choosing the 2003 process in Camera Raw, which appears to avoid that issue.
I just want to add one thing:  There's no upsampled resolution available for this particular camera.  6048 x 4032 is the largest size available.  I for one prefer to convert my raw files directly to upsampled resolutions on the theory that it might improve this kind of thing (and it does seem to deliever more accurate detail with my now out-of-date Canon cameras).  At some point in the past I requested that Camera Raw make several upsampled resolutions available beyond the "native" camera size for any/all cameras.  I hereby renew that request.

  • Gaussian Blur issues

I am having dificulty with Gaussian Blur. I created a selection outline in an image and then filled it with black. I then selected Gaussian Blurr from the Filter Menu a set the radius to 100 and then deselected my previous selection. In CS5 the edges faded into the backgroud image however in CS6 the outline of the previous selection was still visible and the Gaussian Blur did not blend the selection as expected. Even ramping the radius up did not solve the issue as the outline still remained visible. how do i resolve this issue in CS6?
    Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I was working along with a tutorial (the first screen shot is of the result that was achieved in the tutorial). I made the mistake of leaving the selection in place when I applied the Gaussian Blur and so i got the result shown in the second image. I only realised this after reading your comments and trying it again. Thanks for your help.

  • Cs4 urgent - gaussian blur have different visualization on same object

Continuing the before post. As i have write before i have copied and pasted an object from one document to another but the gaussian blur effect are visualized in different way, as the image. Why this?

Thank you, i have find where to set this parameter.
I have another question. I'm designing a graphic library for display on touchscreen, is better if i use resolution 72ppi or 300ppi for the raster effects resolution?

  • Gaussian Blur in Photoshop CS5 Corrupting files

We just got brand new systems at work less than a month ago and this event has happened twice since then. When using Photoshop CS5 Extended and using Gaussian blur the file becomes blocky and all layers as well as their masks become corrupted with these blocks. Can anyone help or is there any advice?
    Here are my system specs...

I'm getting this same issue - or a similar one. It seems to only happen when I run the Gaussian blur command, and during the same process in my workflow. It also seems for me to happen when I have made a selection from a layer above that is a smart object.
Let me describe the scenario that I have experienced a couple times in the past week. (BTW I just upgraded to CS5 only a couple weeks ago).
Usually I have a document open with dozens or hundreds of layers. The effect that I am executing when this seems to happen is where I have a group of shapes or placed image smart object layer and I'm creating a shadow layer by making a blank layer below said group or image, making a selection from the above group or image, and then filling the selection in the blank layer with a color - which I then run the Gaussian blur filter on, and afterward warp transform to get my realistic looking shadow effect.
But the problem is in seemingly random instances and on seemingly random documents when I run that Gaussian blur, Photoshop freaks out and craps the bed. And by craps the bed I mean deletes pixel data from multiple layers in my document very randomly, and also generates odd bright colors all throughout the document.
You can see the initial freak out in this screen shot from when I just initially selected the Gaussian blur filter from the menu (but had not yet even clicked "OK"): http://cl.ly/3KTx . The strange thing is that I had just run this series of steps on the above layer which in the screen shot you'll see as "Layer 44", and all was well.
Here's a screen shot showing the file after I closed it out, restarted Photoshop, and opened the file back up: http://cl.ly/3K2C . In case you can't tell, data from several layers all over the file is missing and corrupted.
I'm sure I don't have to explain how exasperating this is, as this represents more than a year's worth of work on a client project, no joke. Fortunately I'm mostly done with the actual site build, but that makes the loss of the artwork files of no less consquence - especially seeing as how I'm not ACTUALLY finished and I did in fact need all of that data to complete the project.
Anyhow, some additional details which may or may not be related to the issue:
    - The issue seems to happen randomly. As stated above the same steps did not produce the error just a few minutes before.
    - I have had this issue with another file this week where I was doing the same processes on another shape.
    - It seems that this is occuring when I make the selection from a layer that is a smart object of some type
    - I also noticed artifacts in the weird colors (after I tried running the processes again, so not in the above screenshot) that were actually design elements from an entirely different document that I was working with earlier this evening.
    - I have filed a bug report.
Dunno what else to describe, but I hope you guys can get this figured out, seriously. I paid way too much for my upgrade to CS5 to have bugs in key software features corrupt my files thank you.
Also, in regards to my system...

After file is corrupted Photoshop has to be closed and re-opened because subsequent files that are opened are corrupted.
This has been reported in CS5 and CS5.5 extensively but not so much in CS6.

Below is the steps that where used to create the corruption in the files.
    Gausian Blur corruption in Photoshop
Step 1. Create document with 3 layers + Background.
    Step 2. Layer 3 - Create a box (Red)
    Step 3. Layer 2 - Create a box (Blue)
Step 4. Layer 1 – Fill layer (Yellow)
    Step 5. Select layer 3 & 2 & scale down & press
    return
    Step 6. Change opacity of layer 1 & 2 to 25%
Step 7. Go to layer 2 and select Gaussian Blur filter
Please Note that the blue & Red Box Have changed
    colour.
As I Zoom in and out the corruption gets worse.
Sometimes this corruption dose’nt show up until you have
    saved & reopened the file.

  • AI effects: Feather versus gaussian blur? which is raster or vector?

i`m looking at feathering versus blurring. both in illustrator effect drop down menu.
from what I I understand the blur/gaussian blur under photoshop effects (in illustrator) will pixelate the edge gradation, but the illustrator effect "feather, will keep it vector, is this correct?
from sample here they both look the same to me, and I noticed the feather effect was gaussian blurring the edge anyway to produce its result,,
from what I can see I should be able to make either of these as large as a billboard and they would both still be smooth gradients? or would the gaussian blur result in pixelation unless I had the vector object sized correctly in the document in the first place to suit the billboard.
what I am trying to ask is how do they work,
my take is the AI "feather" will allow resizing of the vector object shape to any size and not be pixelated on print output,
where as the gaussian blur PS effect, you would need to make sure your object is correctly sized on the correct document size to ensure that it prints smoothly.
    any feedback is good,....

    wildbirdsketch,
actually can I confirm, both produce a raster gradation to soften the edge, so its no longer vector once you apply a blur or feather correct?
It is, but with raster effects.
asking because if I create a blur/feather, I will have to consider the resolution  or not as again I`m assuming no because each time I resize the object the effect recalculates itself as necessary to create the right blur and resolution for that size.?
As long as you keep the Effect>Document Raster Effect Settings the same, the resolution of raster effects will remain the same,
and when these vector objects print (in general for AI), i`ve never known, do they print as Vector or does the RIP turn them all into raster anyway?
    Indeed.
just confused on this, I`m guessing their only vector while in illustrator, but once going through the printer it will all be raster  via the RIP if thats correct,
    Indeed.
its just that vector allows you to scale it to the required output size prior to print and have it print crisply without having to focus on resolution or resampling methods correct?
    Indeed.

  • Urxvt's Gaussian Blur

I cannot seem to get urxvt's Gaussian Blur working. It should be enabled with the switch -blr HxV, where H and V are numbers, but this errors with:
    "unknown or malformed option"
Also, the resource blurRadius, doesn't seem to work either. These functions are documented in the manpages, but is does not seem to work. Does anyone have the same problem? I'm using version v9.06 - released: 2008-06-15.

  • Query on Gaussian blur

    Hi All,
I have observed one thing. Whenever u add gaussian blur or Radial blur and on dragging slider to change its values, image in the preview appears distorted but still shows effect applying. And on mouse up after the drag, progress bar appears in the bottom and after progress is complete preview becomes smooth. So can anyone tell me
    1. What happens while dragging ? Do they reduce the quality of image? If so how can it be done in our custom effect?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Suma

you could use AEGP_SetCompDownsampleFactor to force the whole comp into lower resolution,
but i don't know what will happen if you do that from a render call.
perhaps you should do that from the USER_CHANGED_PARAM call, but it's getting tricky.
if you want to lower the resolution of your plug-in only,
you could use PF_COPY with a small destination rectangle. (or it's low quality version, which uses a "skip pixel" algorithm)
    it's way quicker than transform_world.
    and lastly,
there is no way for changing the adaptive resolution state on a comp.
neither through the sdk API, nor through java scripting. (at least to my knowledge)

  • IDCS3 Gaussian Blur

I am trying to create an effect where a boxed area of a photo has a gaussian blur on it. I am able to accomplish this in illustrator by placing a copy of a photo on top of the original. Masking it with a box, and applying the blur to the contents of the mask.
However, I need to be able to do this in InDesign as I need flexibility with the images in the publication.
Does anyone know of a plug-in or otherwise to do this?

You could apply the Gaussian Blur in Photoshop to a copy of the layer. Save a layered PSD and place that in InDesign. Use Object > Layer Options to hide/show the blur layer and stack two versions of the image on each other.

  • Is there no gaussian blur transparency feature in keynote?

In keynote, you can make a shape transparent, but I also want to add a gaussian blur. I could have sworn this was a feature in keynote, but I can't seem to find it. Please tell me it exists, it's such a sleek effect and it would be a total shame if the Yosemite still hasn't added this feature. Currently on OS X Yosemite 10.10 with the newest version of Keynote (V. 6.5)

This used to be possible in the old version of Keynote. When you selected an image and went to the image properties, you could move the Sharpness drawer from the center to the left, thus creating a gaussian blur. In the current version the drawer is already on the left, so you could only sharpen the image.
It could be a bug, although one which has existed from the moment on they release the new Keynote back in 2013.

  • Issue with Gaussian Blur and Spot Colors

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue.
Setup: We are using CS4 + CS5 Illustrator on Mac OS 10.5.X and 10.6.X
We created a spot color radial gradient filled circle over a background of the same spot color. The gradient went from 100% of the color down to 2%. We then applied a gaussian blur set to 50 pixels so that we had a nice smooth transition from the circle blurring outwards over the background with the blur blending into the spot color background.
The problem arises when we select "Retain Spot Colors" on the blur. It fills the gradient circle with 100% solid color (but at the 2% range of the gradient so it appears white) and deletes the blur effect. If we don't select "Retain Spot Colors", it converts the blur to process and we get a banding on our printouts where the spot background and CMYK gaussian meet.
We tried the gaussian blur set at 5 pixels all the way up to 55 in 10 pixel increments but nothing worked. We tried different spot colors, same issue. We know we can do the background in Photoshop and import it into Illustrator as a workaround, but we are constantly editing and changing files and would like to keep everything in Illustrator.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this or if there is even a solution. We have not tried Illustrator 5.5 and do not want to invest the money in the upgrade yet. We would prefer to stay with both CS4 and CS5.
    Thank you for any input.

    Hi Mike,
Okay, I have some new information that changes things. I misunderstood what the issue was from the designer. My apologies in advance for the confusion. There are actually two issues but they are somewhat related.
    Issue 1:
We are concerned with banding on the outside of a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur over a patterned background of the same spot color.  We do not  know if this is becasue of the number of pixels on the blur, the version of Illustrator, the blending of the blur into the patterned background, etc... While the banding looks slight on screen it is more pronounced when printed. There are many variables and we have tried everything we can think of to create a smooth transition but we keep getting some banding.
The first image shows what happens when the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu) is unchecked. We believe that the spot color is being treated as CMYK and causing the blur to be a slightly different color than the spot color background thus causing the banding.
The second image shows what happens when we select Preserve Spot Colors. We lose the blur.
The third image is what we are trying to achieve over a over a patterned background of the same spot color. This was achieved with the Preserve Spot Colors unchecked and also unchecking Overprint Preview in the Separations Preview Palette. However, this brings us right back to the issue with the Preserve Spot Color being unchecked.
    Issue 2:
The issue is that we want to print a spot color gradient with a gaussian blur (over 50 pixels). In order to preview the blur effect correctly we have to uncheck the Preserve Spot Colors in the Raster Effects Settings (found under the Effect menu). However, we have recently found out that this will not work with the software our printers use to do separations. If we check the Preserve Spot Color for the separator, it turns the blur into a large square of color (see screensnap below). We have played around with the Add: x Around Object setting in Raster Effects but it has not helped.
    3. If we do not select "Preserve Spot Color", the blur looks correct but it is no longer a spot color but CMYK when separated.
I hope that isn't too confusing and makes sense. Again, apologies for the mixup on my part originally. Thanks again for any help.

  • Gaussian Blur Filling Object?

Hello:                                                                                    My Level: Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64bit  Photoshop CS6
I'm at it again. An other tutorial with missing info etc.
Actually, I think it may be a Ps issue.
    This is what I'm doing...
Create a shape with the Rounded Rectangle > I apply a Gradient & Bevel
New Layer > Fill with White > Ctrl + Alt + G (clipping mask) > change Layer Blend to Multiply > Opactity to 35% > Filter > Noise > Add Noise
New Layer > Ctrl + Alt + G > Ctrl + Click on the Rounded Rectangle Shape to create a Selection
From there I am suppose to add a Stroke by right clicking on the object but that doesn't work. The only menu that pops up is a list of my layers
So, rather I select the Rounded Rectangle layer and then click Effects and select Stroke and then set the values for the stroke
Next I am suppose to add a blur.
Blur > Gaussian Blur but the Stroke ends up filling the entire object. No, I didn't set the Blur to like 1,000 it's only set to 5.9
I tried this on an other computer and the same thing happens. I called Adobe but they were unable to help me even get as far as the Stroke
Any ideas why the entire object ends up filled?
This is driving me totally Insane.

OMG!! R_Kelly ... I cannot even begin to thank you enough for responding to my post!! I could just HUG you!!
    Okay so ...
I do think that is what is happening. I do think I am applying the blur to the shape layer.
Yes. When I try the gaussian blur it does say that the shape needs to be rasterized beforehand. Which I thought was odd/wrong.
Yes. I am suppose to stroke the selection on the blank layer as you described above.
Do you know what tool I should have selected in order to have the stroke appear in the menu when I right click? That did occur to me but the ones I tried didn't seem to make a difference.
    Here's the link: http://designinstruct.com/drawing-illustration/how-to-create-an-ipad-2-from-scratch-using- photoshop/
I was able to do it just fine last night. However, when I moved to step number 2 in the tutorial I realized that the Noise I added had ... ummm ... spilled over onto the entire canvas and was no longer on just the intended shape.
When I did a live chat with Adobe today (for hours ~ of my life I'll never get back lol) the person that helped me told me to skip doing it the way the tut instructed and to just place the Stroke on the shape layer with the blending option.
Thus far that has been the only way I have been able to get the stroke to be visible. When I do the actions the way the tut says the stroke is not visible on the canvas but it does show as being applied in the layers thumbnail.
I right clicked inside the object itself on the canvas. Also, I cannot seem to get a Stroke by going to Edit > Stroke ... it's Always greyed out.
Sorry, I am all confused now. Hope I am not confusing you.
I have been trying to solve this issue since last night. Frankly I don't get it because I was able to accomplish the steps the first time I tried. Except I think I did have to go about the Stroke via Blending Options but like I said I am so confused now I am not certain.
What really gets my goat is that Adobe was not able to help me.
Any way, sorry to ramble. I feel like I need a Valium the size of a hockey puck every time I open Ps or Ai lol
    Awaiting your much Appreciated response.
    TY!! TY!!

  • Resize Smart Object keeping Gaussian blur aspect?

Is there any way (that I'm missing)to resize a smart object wich has a smart gaussian blur filter while keeping the same aspect and without rasterizing it first?
Lets say I'm using a background for a product that needs to be out of focus: ussualy I would convert that background image (a not too large JPG in most casses) to a smart object and then apply a (smart) gaussian blur in case it needs to be further or less focused down the road.
Latter when Image is finished and if for some reason (usualy client complaining about image size) I need to resize the document the settings for blur remain the same causing it to be a lot more unfocused in that new smaller size than the original image size.
Is there any workaround (to keep it editable) that I'm missing?
    Ty for any help.

I never really thought of that but makes perfect sense.. ty,sometimes you just need a fresh look into things, now you have mentioned it looks perfectly natural, dont know how I didnt thought of that.big thanks.

also, i was wondering if anyone knows if the NVIDIA GPU's are having as much of a issue as the AMD b/c i have a few more days to return this puter
