Graphics for Interlaced & Progressive Video.

I had started an earlier thread addressing this issue. The answer I received didn't achieve the results I was looking for so I presented the information a little better. Thank you.
I am having interlacing issues producing graphics for a video destined for both the web and broadcast.
The video's main output will be interlaced on a DVD, the project uses mixed sources both progressive and interlaced. Graphics produced for this piece have been exported from motion with field rendering on.
Approval for this video is done over the internet on youtube. I must deinterlace the video so that it may be displayed on youtube correctly. The problem is that the graphics in the video get ugly stairstepping in them due to the deinterlacing. Deinterlacing is done through compressor's frame controls.
What is the best method for producing graphics for a video that is destined for both TV and the web? Should I be working in both a progressive and an interlaced timeline (exporting graphics either interlaced or progressive for each timeline). Producing only a progressive video is not valid in this case because we want the interlaced video assets to maintain their interlacing for television. Is there something I can do with my interlaced timeline/video to make the graphics look good when changed to progressive?

The methods provided in the previous thread ARE the best methods. That you're having issues is indicative of something else perhaps. It would be best if you could provide a sample of the two clips and the issue you're seeing. Also, a complete accounting of the footage and graphics would help as well. Here is an example:
+Video is DV/NTSC 720x480 29.97, lower field dominance.+
+Graphics are Text. Font Arial bold, 28 point in Boris Title tool.+
+Compressor settings: DVD Best 90. Frame controls: Deinterlace (better), output progressive.+
+Here's a pic of the stairstepping I'm seeing after Compressor [provide link]+

  • Color gives progressive video instead of interlaced back to Final Cut

Hi. I'm just learning to use Color and I have a little problem with it. I have a XDCAM EX 1080i50 Final Cut sequence which I've sent to Color. After doing all the color corrections I told Color to send it back to Final Cut (after rendering of course) but the video is not interlaced anymore and it looks really bad progressive video. I don't really need progressive video because this goes to tv.
I have noticed that there is an option in Colors Setup to Deinterlace Renders and Previews but it is turned off and I have even tried to put interlace FX but it doesn't help either.
So how could I get Interlaced video out from Color?
    Thanks
    Mikko

    Hi JP / Mikko,
I found a workaround for the de-interlace issue when you have lots of different scales/distorts/etc that you don't want to either bake in or remove and reapply.
    - Prep sequence and send to Color (or export/import EDL) as usual (no need to remove scales/distorts/rotations as you may have done before).
    - Leave P&S settings untouched and do your grade
    - Save a "with P&S" archive of your project within Color
    - Reset geometries on a clip, copy to all, save, close, reopen, scan through the sequence in the geometry room to confirm that none of the clips have a red border (rather than white), render grades.
    - Then reload your "with P&S" archive within Color and send your sequence back to FCP (or export and import XML). On reloading the archive, Color will warn you that it will remove your renders, but this doesn't seem to be the case (maybe it refers to DPX or still sequence projects ... if you're scared you could always back them up or "hide" them and move them back)
You should then end up with a sequence in final cut with all your motion attributes and fields intact. We tried this on a 3x60 min programme with lots of 4:3 footage ARC'd in a 16:9 sequence and it worked perfectly.

  • Does itunes support intel x3100 graphics  for watch video and tv shows in itunes:  not working

Hi I have a asus p5k-vm motherboard with intel 3100 onboad graphics accelerator. I had a gtx 570 video card install and was using itunes
to watch video and tv shows. I sold my gtx 570 and I am using intel x3100 onboard graphics accelerator as my video card. Everything works
fine until I try to watch video or tv shows in itunes. When it tries to start, the screen starts and then right awat it stop and shuts down becuse of some error. I don't know what the problem is.
    Please help.

Since updating to 5.0 numerous people have had an issue with optical out. . Try Restart your ATV & computer. Also cycle the power on the ATV and TV (unplug it for 30sec). You should also submit a bug report directly to Apple since they DO NOT read these forums

  • Graphics card for editing home video.

I'm hoping to get a MacBook Pro 15 inch with 8GB and a 750 GB HDD and a 2.5 GHz processor.
However, it comes with the older Radeon HD 6770M 1 GB graphics card.
Would this be suitable for editing home video, or would I be better getting the later, more expensive,  NVIDIA GeForce?

    Yes.

Here is a quick and dirty explanation of why not to make your DVD with progressive video.
This from Jeff Bellune author of:
The Focal Easy Guide to Adobe ® Encore ™ DVD 2.0
"The video that is stored on an NTSC DVD-Video disc is stored as 29.97 fps interlaced video. To view the interlaced fields as progressive frames (like through the component outputs of a DVD player that supports progressive playback), the player has to internally de-interlace the video before sending it out. So there is no advantage to rendering or transcoding interlaced source video as progressive if you are going to DVD-Video."
Jeff Bellune has been a Technical Consultant to Adobe since March of 2003, including work on the previous version of Encore DVD. He is the owner of a digital production and post-production company, Bellune Digital Video Services, and an active presence on industry web forums.

  • Best Resolution/Quality Settings For 4:3 Video Going To DVD...

    Hello,
I have several old Hi8 tapes that were imported into iMovie 10x and need to find the best export quality for these uncropped 4:3 videos. They will be exported via "Share > File"  into an MP4 file format (with H.264) and then sent to a third-party DVD program. So, what resolution and quality settings do I use?
Do I use the highest resolution (1280x720) and then gauge down the custom quality until it can fit on a 4.7GB DVD?
Do I use whatever resolution that can handle the quality of "High" and still fit on a 4.7GB DVD?
    Peace,
    Dr. Z.

    Hi
DVD is as standard - Interlaced SD-Video quality - Whatever Video-DVD authoring program used (e.g. iDVD, Toast etc)
Feeding iDVD Higher resolution and Progressive material - Will not improve the final DVD but decrease the quality as iDVD do a bad job in downscaling.
To get best possibly result I do
    - Use a Video-Editing program that can handle - Interlaced SD-Video quality - as iMovie up to HD6 and any version of FinalCut.
iMovie'08 to 11 can not do this in full.
    - Export as QuickTime .mov (just straight off) - if iMovie HD6 then just drop the Movie project icon into iDVD (All Quality is preserved)
    - Brand of DVD used - I only use Verbatim
    - Type of DVD used - RW-DVD usually do not work. R+DVD only works on Newer DVD-players - I use R-DVD
    - BURN SPEED - I set as low possibly
    - Free Space on Boot Hard Disk (Mac OS/Start-up one) - never less than 25Gb
This should deliver best possibly result.
    Good Luck !

  • Putting Progressive video onto SD dvd

    Hello everyone.
I am currently putting together a compilation of work for my brother and some of his projects were done with progressive video. So, when I export these videos, should I let FCP add the interlacing (though changing my sequence settings) or should I leave it to DVD SP (I let DVDSP do my MPEG encoding)? Does it matter which program handles this?
    Thanks all

So, when I export these videos, should I let FCP add the interlacing (though changing my sequence settings) or should I leave it to DVD SP (I let DVDSP do my MPEG encoding)? Does it matter which program handles this?
If the progressive material in question is 23.98 fps - and you want/need to maintain that - then you can, without altering sequence settings in FCP, use Compressor to encode the video and produce a 23.98 fps MPEG-2 file.
Encoding a 23.98 fps file with DVDSP, however, will not produce a 23.98 MPEG-2 file - DVDSP's internal encoder only makes 29.97 (interlaced) .m2v files.

  • Short shutter speed & progressive video in SD broadcast

I guess progressive video has to be converted to interlaced before use in standard definition broadcast in order to be compatible with old CRT TVs. Am I right?
Will video shot in progressive 25 frames/sec (PAL) appear stuttered after converting to interlaced 50 fields/sec (PAL)?
Or will the interlacing process smooth the difference between the frames, and the appearance will be as the footage was shot as normal interlaced video?
Does shorter shutter speed than 1/50 affect pictures I SD broadcast in negative ways?
In advance - thanks for your advice!

The picture in "old style" PAL video is updated every 1/50 second.
    In 720p/1080p 25 frames/second it's updated every 1/25 second.
It surprises me that 25p won't appear more stuttered than 50i.
I thought that 50i would be smoother - even though it's just half the picture that's updated every 1/50s. But maybe you're right.

  • Need advice on computer for photo and video editing

I do mostly routine stuff on my home computer (word processing, e-mails, internet, etc), except for photo and video editing (hobby, not professional)
I'm upgrading my 4 year old set up, as it has 2 GB ram, dual core vs quad core, 256mb video card, etc, etc.  Better to buy a new rig than upgrade several different components.
Costco has a pretty nice set up in the store (HPE 257 c-b), but for an extra $200, I can order online and get the HPE 170t, which is essentially the same except for 2 upgrades:
-Radeon HD 5770 video card vs Radeon HD 5570
-Two 1 TB 7200 hard drives vs one 1 TB 7200 hard drive
My question is this.....is it worth the extra $200 to get the better graphics card and the dual hard drive set up?  Will it really make that much of a difference in the performance?  I'm thinking it will, especially the ability to set up the 2nd hard drive as my scratch disk.
For what it's worth, both systems have the i7 860, 8 GB ram, and Windows Home Premium 64 bit.
    Thanks.

In very general terms, the requirements for Video will exceed those for Photoshop (PS). If you are looking at PrPro CS5, then the video card WILL make a difference, and PS CS5 now takes advantage of the video card, than before.
For PS, the minimum HDD setup would be a 2x system with physical (not partitions) HDD's. Video has more requirements in this area, and I would say that a 3x setup is the minimum. Do read Harm's linked article, as it is the best that I have ever run across.
For the PS setup, just locate the Scratch Disks for PS on your extra HDD's, the ones with your Project and PrPro Scratch Disks.
Enjoy the new computer, and welcome to the forum,
    Hunt

  • How can i allocate more RAM for my onboard video card on a 2011 macbook pro 13 inch running windows 7 via bootcamp

I noticed that since Macbooks.. macs in general use an EFI instead of BIOS.  . .. Now i need to allocate some more RAM for the onboard video card since its currently running with an estimated 50mb.. I would like to increase this to 512  and cut the 3.95 down to 3.5 MB for the rest of the system ( allowing me to run more graphic intensive games and the such ... ) I know this could slow down the entire system.. ( i am aware of this ) and have gotten a 3rd party application to control and close out uneeded processes during gaming.. I just need more ram for my onboard video card.. Any help?

You don't allocate more RAM towards your video card, you put more RAM into the machine and hopefully some machines will bump the CPU graphics RAM allocation up a little.
The problem is you bought a integrated only graphics computer, if you want to 3D game you need a dedicated graphics computer with it's own or dedicated VRAM.
If your this serious about 3D gaming, your on the wrong platform.
Get a Windows 7 64bit i7 8GB RAM expandable 3D gaming tower with a good power supply and video card upgrade path, this way every few years you buy and stick in a new video card to play the latest games.
Mac's are not gaming machines and never will be because they would last too long if we could upgrade them.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 - Proper Settings for Creating Graphic for Film

  • Progressive video into DVD SP

Can you add progressive video to a DVD SP4 project?
I changed a 29.97 NTSC interlaced DV video to progressive video with Compressor 2 and I can't import it in a project in DVD SP 4. The accompanying .ac3 file imports OK.
I'm presuming it won't import because it is progressive video vs interlaced.
Does the DVD spec require interlaced video?
    Thanks,

  • FLVPlayback: buffer with progressive video?

I've been searching around the web and coming up confused.
I am using the FLVPlayback component to deliver
progressive-download video in Flash 8. I want the component to
download more video before it starts playing so the playback
doesn't get ahead of the download and hang up.
I would have thought FLVPlayback.bufferTime would do the
trick, but I've read two things in the docs which seem to say not:
    1. "NOTE This property does not specify the amount of the FLV
file to download before starting playback." (Does that mean it only
specifies the amount of time to buffer, not the amount of the file
    to buffer?)
    2. "For a progressively downloaded FLV file over HTTP, there
is little benefit to increasing this value although it could
improve viewing a high-quality video on an older, slower computer."
(Some of the sites I've found in my searching say bufferTime _does_
make a difference using progressive video, but others say no.)
So my question is, what is the recommended way to make sure
enough file has downloaded before starting playback? Seems like a
simple question, but also seems there's a lot of confusion
surrounding this and I think the documentation is a little vague.
    Thanks for any advice!
    -Helene

dzedward: I've got a few videos, all in the 1-3 minute range.
I'm sorry to say I didn't understand your answer. I thought RTMP is
streaming, and buffers to memory, and what I'm using is progressive
    download, which is something else.
Nickels55: Your answer implies that bufferTime should work on
progressive video. I'll give it a try. The default is not 1 second
but .1 second (one tenth), which I suppose can't be enough! I'll
try pushing it up and see what happens.

  • Best $1k-$2k monitor for editing HD video?

I'm finding myself lately doing quite a bit of color correction to HD video footage lately, and my extremely old monitor (Planar PX2611W) just isn't sufficient anymore, so I'm hoping you all might be able to help me. I've looked at a number of different monitors, and am starting to get confused by all of the Gamut discussions and whether they play at all into video editing (or are just for photo editing - which is also important to me), calibration issues (or devices), etc.
What I am looking for is around 27", preferably closer to $1k but willing to go up to $2k'ish, professional grade and calibrated monitor for editing HD video footage (displayed on everything from HD TVs to smart phones) and photos (mostly for web but also definitely do some printing - usually all in the sRGB gamut).
Also looking for calibration device suggestions if the monitor doesn't have such functionality built in.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

    You said:
"It seems the playback is the same when viewed on both monitors."
Both monitors at the same time ? That's the same (or worse) as using only the larger monitor.
You should do the test again using just the older monitor with the smaller resolution.
I believe the higher the resolution the harder the CPU and graphics card has to work. This could mean slowdowns and maybe choppy playback.
A better solution would be to use 2 monitors. The playback monitor should be maybe only 1920 resolution. And in Nvidia panel you should set the hardware acceleration only for this monitors and not for both. On the second monitor you can move most of your toolbars. In this way you will have a giant workspace/resolution - but only 1920 pixels accelerated.
I also bought a NEC PA241W and I searched high and low and could only find discussions about photography and printing. Like calibration and this monitor is good only for printing. And not one discussion on any forum about calibration and After Effects for example. Like the video people are not interested at all in calibration.
I would really like to know if calibration with the X-rite i1Display Pro is also good for video ? Or only for printing.

  • How can I change the default for interlacing on FCEHD 4?

For some reason, when I import video into a project it puts interlacing on it.
Where is the default and how can I change it so that it is NOT interlaced when I import it?
This is quicktime video 720x480 standard that was not interlaced before the import.
I tried putting a de-interlacing filter on it and it was way too soft.  I played around with all the other choices ie: all the flicker filters, upper odd and lower even and did not get satisfying results.  It was also very frustrating because I had to put the filter on every shot.

Here is the source video:  It is 640x480  I do not see any lines.  If there is interlacing it is not very visible.
Here is what it looks like in FCEHD4:  The project is 720x480  I do not see any interlacing at all in the canvas or viewer.
This is how I exported it: (I checked "de-interlace source video")
    Here is
This is the final outcome, but unfortunately on this screen, you can't see the lines.
There is a very distinct difference between the source video and the exported video.
The exported video is full of lines and looks like it's interlaced.
