Great workflow plugin

Sometime ago I posted on these forums with a request for a plugin to automate my workflow.  Rob Cole gave me some great ideas, and has now kindly written a great plugin!
No doubt all of us have some basic settings we generally apply to images – sharpening, noise reduction, saturation, clarity, CA, etc.  Probably, these basic settings vary by such things as the ISO, the lens used, the F stop used, landscape vs portraits, etc.
What the plugin allows you to do is automatically run your Develop presets based on filters.  The filters are implemented as your own Smart Collections:
Smart Collection A, Dev Preset A, KW Preset A
Smart Collection B, Dev Preset B, KW Preset B
Etc
Typically, you would set up Smart collections and Dev Presets (eg)
Smart Collection A filters on:  Camera XX, ISO 100-200, F2.8-F5.6, Kw Portrait
Dev Preset A = Low NR, Low-Med Sharpening, Low-Med saturation, etc
Smart Collection B filters on: Camera XX, ISO 800-1600,  Kw Landscape
Dev Preset B = Med NR, Med Sharpening, High Saturation, etc
Etc
When you have a whole set of smart collections and associated presets, you set up the plugin to use them. (Simple GUI is provided)
Then, each time you import a batch of images, you simply execute the plugin, and it runs all the smart collections and associated presets at once, thus applying optimal defaults to all images based on the settings you have defined.
It takes some time and thought to set up your smart collections and dev presets, but once done, you can apply 90% of all required changes to your pictures at the click of a button each time you import new pics...
The tool is freely available (donation-ware) from Rob Coles’s site, and works very well.

  • Workflow works great, application/plugin doesn't...

    Hi all,
I am creating a workflow for Aperture and all is well in the workflow but if I try to save the workflow as an application I get a strange issue:
One step in the flow involves selecting a project and exporting the images as full size Jpeg versions. In the workflow it works perfectly. If I save as an application/script plugin I get a .approject file rather than my jpegs. The application times out after that because the next step requires the Jpegs.
I can simply run the workflow of course, but I am hoping there might be a better solution for applications or plugins that don't function as their workflow counterparts do.
    Thanks

  • Programming your own workflow plugins

    Hey folks,
I've seen people asking "how do I select all clips in the timeline downstream?" and get the answer: Track Selection Tool! Which is quite ok, but for me, the Avid Media Composer way is a bit faster: I hold Alt/Opt and press 2, and all clips on all active tracks will be highlightet (pressing 1 selects upstream). So no need to click the timeline with the cursor and check to see if you got all the clips you need based on where you clicked with this clunky double arraw symbol. Since there's no function like this in Premiere I can't really hook up my beloved Alt/Opt+2-shortcut, so I looked into programming such a plugin myself, but all I've done is script-based plugins (LScript in LightWave, MEL-script in Maya, Action Script, and so on), so sitting down with a cup of coffee and a fresh install of Xcode with the Adobe Premiere CC SDK loaded up didn't yield the quick results I had hoped for. "What the hell's a double pointer? Or tripple, for that matter.. I give up..." There's just too big a gap between C++ and the more functional simple scripting plugin languages like Action Script, After Efects scripts and so on.
So the way I see it I'm left with three options: Accepting the Track Selection Tool. Or spend lots of time learning basic C++ and dig around the Premiere SDK for hours to try to understand how to do this the hard way, or ask here if someone with C++ skills thinks this is easily done, how long time it would take to do set up an Xcode project with such workflow functions in mind, maybe one I could edit and add to myself. I'd be willing to pay for such a favor, but for the moment it's more a question of "is it possible, and how difficult is it?"
About my system: iMac 2013, Premier Pro CC 2014
Also on my wishlist: Being able to select a point on a clip in the timeline where to start or end a fade, instead of having to constantly adjust fade length after adding them. Also havein a pop up proceed a crossfade, asking: "How long do you want the crossfade to be (in frames)?"
    -Lyder

Well.. So Track Selection Tool it is!
    Thanks for the quick reply,
    -L

  • Custom workflow plugin timeout after 2 minutes

    Hi all,
I created a custom workflow which calls external web services but it timeout after 2 minutes on Dynamics CRM 2011 On-Premise. I am using async on-demand workflow settings.
I tried to change the registry OLEDBTimeout, ExtendedTimeout, NormalTimeout but with no effect.
    Any advise.  Thanks.

    Hi Gary,
It is not a good idea to call external web service from workflow for many reasons. One given here:
    1) If web service is not available, it does not notify user for any failures.
Can you write the same code in plug-in and check if this works for you? If it does and you still need to have workflow, suggest check the async account running the service and make sure it has enough rights to call web service
and also make sure async box has internet connection to make the outbound service call.
    Hope this helps.

  • Looking for a Workflow-Checklist (plugin)

    Hello everybody,
I really like LR as my primary workflow-tool.
    What I'm actually looking for: a "workflow-checklist-plugin".
This plugin should be a plugin visible in the develop module of Lightroom.
It (the plugin) should show me a list of checkboxes (which I could define).
These Checkboxes contain the different steps of my LR-Workflow (to make shure that I don't forget one of them).
Also, the "TAG" Metadata of the photo should be edited within the plugins-windows (with this feature, there's no need to jump back to the library to add a TAG).
All data might be saved in the photos metadata.
To describe a bit more in detail what I mean, I generated a "sample picture"
Do you have any idea if there's somewhere such a workflow-plugin?
And: do you have any additional idea if it's possible to modify the TAG of a photo in the develop module (without jumbing back to the library)?
I should be glad about any suggestion as I just started a small project on freelancer and don't have a good feeling about the offers coming in ;-)
    Thanks for your help,
    regards,
    Marcel

    Hi everybody,
thanks a lot for your very helpful suggestions regarding the workflow.
Coming back to the plugin I'm looking for, here are four more examples to explain what I want to address with this "customizable checklist" in the devlop module of lightroom:
-identify all photos for batch processing in photoshop (HDR, stacking etc.) - one point on the checklist ("batch in PS") and a smart collection to filter all this photos would speed up this a little bit.
-identify all photos that needs a "batch" noice reduction. I.e. I have many photos for which I do the first noice reduction depending on camera model and ISO. With a checkmark at "batch noice reduction", these photos could be found easily in a smart collection (and would not be done twice).
-identify all photos accepted by "fineart gallery x". With a checkmark on the checklist and a smart collection showing all the photos with this checkmark, you could get a visual understandig of what (kind of) photos they've accepted (and what not).  This point probably is not a point for the development module only, of course, but for the library too. So, if the checklist could be shown in the library too, it woould be fantastic.
-identify all photos for which I transferred the copyright to somebody else (i.e. a client) or photos which I develop only once as an original (and which will never be pubished online).
Of course, all this could be done by using the "tag" field. Jumping back to the library, putting in some words in the tag (i.e. "PS-batch","HDR" etc.) would do this job too (that's how I do it today).
But a quick to "check/uncheck list" seems to be the faster way  (just my 2c).
And the plugin I'm looking for should only do one thing: speed up the work not done "with the camera at hand."
From my non-programmer-view, this plugin seemed to be not very complicated : extend the LR metadata and show a checklist to edit this metadata (nothing more ;-)
But I already learned that, within LR, this is not as easy as it seemed ;-)
As I initially wrote, I also posted a freelancer project for this programming and there are already applicants for this job but "I have to check if they really do have the competency needed" (I'm not very optimistic, that I'll find someone thru freelancer).
So, I'm still hoping that there is already a plugin doing this job or that it will be easy to develop this "show a list-plugin ;-)

    Marcel

  • Is there a known problem with Nik Software Plugins and PSE10

I replaced my PC with a new 64-bit Windows 7 workstation. Have used PSE10 for a while for my cataloging and editing and I did 'trial' individual Nik Software plugins on my old Vista PC for a while. I decided to purchase the Nik Software collection and also to take the plunge and go to Lightroom 4 as well. I put PSE10 on my new PC as well because I want to consider how I might modify my workflow to use both in conjunction (perhaps LR4 for cataloging and PSE10 for editing)
When it came to installing Nik Software Plugins (they are supposed to plugin to Elements and LR4) it seemed to find some of the plugins compatible with both PSE10 and LR4 , some compatible with one of them and some not compatable (apparently) with either, but installed them anyway. But when I use PSE10 now I cannot go from the Organizer into the Editor, it loads the editor interface but not the image. If you open PSE Editor directly and open an image, the image will load and you see 4 of the plugins and I invoke them but the changes dont seem to get applied in PSE10. Then I started reading up on the  web ..... and the consensus seems to be it is not a Nik Software issue but an Abobe editor plugin issue.
On a side issue, the retailer I bought Nik Software from sent me no product keys (they sent me Apple Aperture keys) - now they are about to replace my delivery with a fresh issue and proper keys ... but if I run into the same problems again, I dont know what to do. This leads me to looking for some definitive advice from those in the know!
Should I forget about buying Nik Software plugins altogether?
I see a download is available for LR4-2 .. does anyone know if this fixes Nik Plugin issues there?
I am minded to go the route of using LR4 as my cataloging preference but to call PSE10 Editor for editing and have all my plugins operate out of PSE10, but I could not get the plugins to work with PSE10 as mentioned. How does one get them to work?
Is there some workaround or special "way" or "order" to install things ???
I'm still waiting days for some support from Nik Software ... but they are just going to say there is nothing wrong with their product (and the web seems to concur)
Any help would be appreciated on the PSE10 Issue.

    17/10/2012. I installed the update - Lightroom 4.2
It keeps the same product key and found the catalog and the Windows Control Panel only seems V4.2 so the original has been replaced with this upgrade.
This would be the first time I put down Lightroom  with Photoshop Elements  V.10 already there on the system and I suspect this might have helped with better integration between the 2 products.
I made sure I then opened Photoshop Elements V10 and I could edit an image (that the Organizer invocation to Photoshop Elements Editor did sucessfully load the image) and I could use existing plugins like Topaz and Noiseware. Also I made sure Lightroom  4.2 could use "Edit with Photoshop Elements " and it did.
The supplier who had sent me the wrong Nik Software product keys, sent me a corrected version with product keys for Lightroom
Several web articles I read on Nik Software plugins may be misleading (for example there is one on DPReview) which state that Nik Software plugins are compatable with Photoshop (the main product) but are NOT compatable with Photoshop Elements v10. I can tell anyone who uses Photoshop Elements 10 that they ARE compatable with Photoshop Elements 10, but it can be a little tricky to get them going.
This is how I sucessfully managed to get the Nik Software Plug-ins
working (finally) on both Lightroom  and Photoshop Elements v10 at the same time
Remember my scenario ... I am putting together a new 64 bit Windows 7 PC and I want to be able to continue to use my Photoshop Elements v10 and also to delve into Lightroom for the first time.  I had read all the blurb on Nik Software and it said the plugins were compatable with both and I had downloaded and tested some of them on an old PC anyway, so I knew the principle of installation and operation.
I had just bought the Nik SOftware Complete Collection in September 2012.
The box and the CD they come with .... this is where one of the problems is. Let me explain...
    Step 1:
    =======
Some of the components on the CD are up to date .. and when you elect to install them the sofware tells you that it has found both Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop Elements V10 and it installs the plugins no problem and they work. Make sure (in these cases) you take their defaults as to the locations the plugins are instlled to. Typically the dual install works for the following components
    Nik Color Efex Prov V4
    Nik Silver Efex V2
    and the plugins go to
    for Photoshop Elements v10           C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 10\Plug-Ins\
    for Lightroom 4                                 C:\users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\External Editor Presets\
After each of the above 2 installs finished I invoked Photoshop Elements v10 first and opened an image in Editor and made sure the plugin was working and inserted my product key and activated it over the web. I then made sure it was also working in Lightroom 4.2 - it was!
    Step 2:
    =======
When it came to installing the Sharpener 3 component off the vendor's CD, it displayed NEITHER of the two applications on its compatability list at all. And there was no "+" sign where one can add one manually. Furthermore if you continue with setup.exe it crashes. I closed the EXE and confirmed there was no plugin in Photoshop Elements v10 as expected for Sharpener.
But when I went into Lightroom 4.2 it shows me the 2 Sharpener entities (the RAW and Output one). And I used it and proved the plugins were working through Lightroom  4.2 and I inserted my product key for it when invoking it for the first time via Lightroom  4.2 as well.
Then I went onto the Nik Software download site and downloaded a more updated version which was Sharpener Version 3.01. When I ran the installer from this download it actually does see and show both Photoshop Elements v10 and Lightroom  4.2 as "compatable" and it installed the plugins from that .. and they both work ... even though I had it working already (seemingly) from the CD install I obviously installed over it and the plugin still works in Lightroom 4.2. It also works now in Photoshop Elements v10. Only issue I had here was I had to re-insert my product key and activate it when I used the plugin via Photoshop Elements v10 for the first time... but if that is the extent of a techincal difficulty - I would take it anytime!.
    Step 3:
    =======
When it came to installing Viveza 2 off the CD, it only saw Lightroom  4.2 as compatable. I did something similar in this case. I let it install to Lightroom 4.2 as a plugin and proved it worked and activated its produvt key. Then I downloaded V2.009 off the website. I re-installed from it (over the Lightroom 4.2 one obvously again) and it now also sees Photoshop Elements 10 as compatable and installs correctly. Strangely enough I did not have to enter my product key a second time when I went to invoke the plugins via Photoshop Elements v10 in this case. What the hell! - the subtleties of software!
    Step 4:
    =======
Dfine 2.0 - the setup for the CD again finds NEITHER of the 2 applications on its compatablity list, but it put it into Lightroom 4.2 anyway (like the Sharpener component behaved) and I proved it worked. Then I downloaded version 2.112 from the Nik Software website and it finds both applications compatable. Also I did have to re-enter my product key when first invoking the plugin via the Photoshop Elements v10 editor (like as in the case of Sharpener)
    Step 5:
    =======
HDR Efex Pro (which comes on the vendors CD with a promise to a free upgrade to HDR Efex Pro 2) .... the setup.exe sees Lightroom  4.2 as compatable but does not see Photoshop Elements  v10. Be careful ... this component is NOT A PLUGIN ... to see and use it in Lightroom 4 you must select photos and then do menu option EXPORT WITH PRESET HDR EFEX PRO. It does not work as a plugin within Photoshop Elements (any version) . I obtained my free upgrade too and it works from Lightroom. Dont even try to configure it manually as a plugin for Elements. Instead if you save files as JPG or TIFF you can open the EXE directly in the Program Files area (if you have 64 bit make sure to open that EXE not the 32 bit one) and you can use it in standalone mode. There is only one menu option within HDr Efex Pro when using it this way ...  File-Open.
So to conclude ... (leaving HDR Efex aside because we know it will not plugin to Elements) ... I have them all working in both Lightroom and Elements. As I begin to learn Lightroom and move away from Elements for cataloging and edits, I know I can invoke most of my workflow plugins from both products. People say I should persist in Lightroom, but if for some reason I dont, I have the fall back position of having everything working out of Elements 10 anyway. It's been a bit of chore getting to this point, but others might find my workaround useful.

  • Procedural/Workflow question

    Hi all,
After finishing the CS6 Production Premium book, I decided to start afresh with the projects I am busy with. Last Friday we shot some more footage of one of the ships we are using. I have around 11 Scenes shot, a few takes of each. Following the book, I checked the files with Bridge, I ingested them with Prelude and used it to perform a rough cut - including metadata notes and markers stating in and out points of the footage (and any pieces in between I wanted cut out). I then took that cut to Premier, where, using the razor tool, I cut out the unwanted sections and was left with a series of scenes, back to back of the ship against the bluescreen. I then took each shot seperately and replaced them with an After Effects composition. In After Effects, I proceded to use the keying techniques I have just picked up from the other book I reading through (Mark Christiansen...you are a genius!) and have keyed out each of the shots rather well (I hope to get better at keying as I get more practice).
My question is now, as follows...
I need to place these ships against various background plates. Some of them will be created from scratch in After Effects (space scenes) and some are live footage shots of vistas and fields etc. In each of the shots, the models have real movement (done camera side). In some of the composites, the models movements will be sufficient, in others, I will have to animate them accross the background. The procudures in the book, was to put the forground and background together in Premier. As I see it, I have three choices, and I want to know if there is a reason to choose one above the other, or if this is a call I can make based on which I enjoy more!
    1) Place background on seperate layer in Premier
    2) Add background in After Effects, include models animation and timing in composition and have it linked to Premier (as the models layers currently are)
    3) Add background in after effects (for reference only), do animations and composition for models then remove background layer and re add it in Premier
Logically, I assume that the 2nd choice makes more sense, I just want to confirm this, as having worked with the full suite for the first time now, I am very excited to see how all the products integrate so nicely. Since the choices are there, I want to make sure I am not missing a great workflow for the sake of shortcuts!
    Thank you
    Pierre

    Hi Fuzzy,
    Thanks for the confirmation!
I started some of the compositing work yesterday while waiting for replies, and did it this way anyway. It works nicely, and then, once I am done in AE, if I have a rendered preview already, Premier does its render nice and fast. 3 Scenes done yesterday, 2 completed, one to finish touch ups today. It is so exciting to be at this point finally after 10 months! I have "final quality" footage, "final quality" backgrounds - let the compositing begin!
    Dave,
Thanks for the tip. I am familiar with the light wrap, and a few techniques that I picked up from Todd, as well as some of the other books I have in my every growing Adobe library. I am currently experimenting with having a sliver thin edge matte and leaving that quite transparent so that the background bleeds through. I want to see how that looks, otherwise, light-wrap - it shall be.
    Todd,
Thanks for the link. I have not got the new CS6 Learn by Vdeo yet, still the CS5 one, and some of the other books. But I do recall the light wrap techniques quite well. Ill put a few together for the team to evaluate, I am under the impression that light-wrap will work better for the characters and their backgrounds, rather than the ships, as they travel rather fast, and spend a lot of time in dark space backgrounds.
    Anyway,
Thanks again all (oh, and on a personal note - STILL no teeth on young master Devereux! *sigh*) and I hope you all have a great holiday season - If you can stay away from the forum for more than 2 days - its a good start! - Ill be away for a week, but doubt Ill be able to stop myself checking in every other day!

  • Exporting workflow from PP CS4 for intermediate files

    Hi there,
I have native footage from Sony EX1 (mp4 or MXF container with mpeg 2 long GOP codec) which I cut and slightly filter/modify in Premiere Pro CS4.1.
Most times I shoot in 1080/50i (yes, I need that format) and need both: FullHD for Blu-ray and PAL-SD for DVDs of the same footage.
Most of you will confirm, that simply downscaling with AME gives terrible results. So I use eg. Dan Isaacs great workflow with VDub and AviSynth to deinterlace and downscale and then encode with TMPGEnc Xpress for DVDs. This gives somehow good results but I am unsure, if I am doing right.
Here is the problem: CS4 does not allow debugmode frameserver anymore so I have to render an intermediate file for further use eg with AviSynth.
But how do I get fully valid intermediate video files out from CS4? Uncompressed AVI is pure horror, its slow rendering, even on an i7-PC, and giant in file size. I would like to export with HuffYuv or Lagarith codec, for example. But everybody says, EX1-footage is, as all HD footage, TopFieldFirst. When exporting "Microsoft AVI" with those codecs one has to choose BottomFieldFirst - all other tries result in black video. I assume only BFF is valid in Microsoft AVI, somehow.
I would like to use Cineform but converting footage with NeoScene is only possible from HDV/AVCHD-camcorders and when exporting with its codec as Microsoft AVI it has the same BFF-only-problem. And I cannot afford NeoHD which would do my job perfectly with EX1-footage.
How the heck do you export HD footage (with TopFieldFirst) for further use from PP CS4, please?
Any hint is appreciated, at the moment I am lost,
    thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi Ann,
I use MPEG2 as the codec.  When you set M and N frames to 1 in the export settings dialog, you get an I-frame-only MPEG file.  That's essentially an intra-frame compression as opposed to MPEG2 DVD encoding, which is a temporal, inter-frame compression (and very lossy).  When I set the bit rate for the I-frame-only MPEG2 file to 100 Mbps, it's visually lossless.  I set the Profile to 4:2:2 to preserve the color data and the Level to High to allow the very high bit rate.
Sources for my tests have been AVCHD footage from a Panasonic HMC-150 camera (not mine, unfortunately!) and some AVC and MPEG2 HD transport streams.  I've tested 1080i60, 1080p24, 1080p30, 720p60, 720p30 and 720p24.
I don't use MRQ to export the intermediate because no scaling or deinterlacing needs to be done to the HD footage.  The intermediate file gets exported at the same frame size and field order as the source.  All of the scaling and deinterlacing (if necessary) is done by the hd2sd script in AviSynth.  So my intermediate exports run just a bit faster than real time on my 8-core system.
(Big kudos again to Dan Isaacs not only for the hd2sd script, but for giving me the proper settings for the MPEG2 intermediate export.)
    -Jeff

  • Best place to find more plugins??

    hi everyone
Where is the best place to find more plugins to add to those already with Logic?
The effects with logic are very good but id like to add to those now.
Is there a big range of plugins like the vst's for cubase?
    Thanks
    Andy

    Hey Andy,
There is just as large a collection of plugins for Logic (these come in the AU or Audio Units format) as for Cubase. Anywhere you can buy recording equipment should be selling plugins too. Some free plugins (but not very useful most of the time) can be found on places like www.digitalfishphones.com or www.airwindows.com . The guy that owns AirWindows seems to basically do code copies of plugins. He's got some great free plugins. . . one of which I often use on vocals. he also has some paid plugins that are far cheaper than the competition ($60 vs. $500 for a tape emulation plugin for instance) that are VERY good.
If you're looking to buy plugins, go to www.sweetwater.com . . . or really any large pro audio retailer, but sweetwater's a good place to start. If I knew more of what you were looking for I could help guide you a bit better.
Also, if you have an ilok key you can download demos of many paid plugins and give them a test drive.

  • Panasonic AG-HPX500 workflow with FC - pros and cons?

We are now shooting on Betacam SP, capturing to DV using a DSR-45P DVCAM deck.
    We edit in FCP 5.
Now we are about to first upgrade our computers to MacBook Pro and Mac Pro and FCS 6.
Next step is a new camcorder.
We have been recommended to take a look at Panasonic AG-HPX500, which uses the P2 card.
Have anyone of you excellent forum members started working with this camcorder?
I understand that FCS 6 does have native support for the P2 card and if you have a MacBook Pro, you can plug the P2 card into the computer and copy the footage you want to use to a hard drive (or even edit directly on the P2 card).
I'd be very glad if you'd share your opinions.
We have this idea to start shooting and editing in HD and then downconvert to SD when creating the MPEG-2 for a SD DVD as output format. This would hopefully give the best quality to our MPEG-2 encoder.

I've been using the P2 system for about 7 months and have to say it's great!
I'm not sure what you mean about it not having native support in FCP. FCP 6 has all you need to get your material in and work with it using the Log and Transfer system within the app.
I use a P2 reader to get the material in, and yes you can use a laptop but only the Powerbok type, the newer MacBook Pro's have the smaller PCMCIA slot so you can't transfer without a P2 viewer or reader. The good thing about the reader is it has 6 slots so you can just setup your transfers and then go away for a bite, come back and it's all done, rather than swapping cards etc.
All in all a great workflow. The only problem I have experienced is a couple of cards I had became corrupted, although they played fine in the camera. I was able to record off the material via HD SDI and save it, it just wouldn't show up in the reader/viewer.
The flexibility of the P2 system in terms of shooting formats, under and over cranking etc is fantastic, very much another step towards achieving filmic quality with digital equipment.
I don't know if there are any real benefits to be had by shooting in HD and resolving down to SD. You'll end up just loosing a lot of frame info in the transfer and you'd be hard pushed to see any discernable difference between good quality SD and the route you propose.
Having said that, investing in HD is a good move as will only get more widespread and lets hope that the formats calm down a bit!

  • Question re Create PDF from Word doc

    Hi
I am trying to create a pdf from a Word document (Word 2007, Acrobat 8 Professional), and am having lots of trouble with images, fonts and document overhead. With the fonts, i generate the PDF by saying Create Pdf from the plugin in Word. I specify in the Preferences that fonts are not to be embedded. I then open the PDF and access PDF Optimiser -> Audit Space Usage, and it says that fonts take up like 20% of the document, however there are only like 10 lines of text in Arial (9pt), and 6 titles also in Arial (Bold). I dont understand why Font is taking up so much space considering that i have elected not to embed fonts (if i go to the Fonts section in the Optimiser, it shows both embedded and unembedded panes blank).
With the images, i have 2 jpegs in the footer, that are compressed (JPEG -> Low). The other thing i am struggling with is the headers and footers, if i generate the PDF from the Word doc with Headers/Footers, then images take up over 15% of the document. Not sure if there is a way to add headers and footers within minimum impact of filesize? I have tried checking everything in the 3 categories of Dicard Objects, Discard User data and Clean Up. but the Document Overhead remains at 35%.
What else can i do to get these filesizes reduced?I have been researching this for days and have not come across anything that has helped.I have tried to PDF print, i have changed the font to like Courier, ensured no thumbnails or bookmarks, ensured JPEGs are not embedded in the doc, tried Save As, Save As under a different filename - basically anthing you can find on the net i have found and tried, but still cant fix this!!!! please, if anyone knows acrobate 8 better than me / or knows what the problem is, please advise????
    Thanks very much.

The colors and size in a graphic needs to be done in a graphics editor. What type of editor would depend on the use of vector graphics versus bitmap. Sometimes vector graphics are larger than bitmaps if you are using a lot of lines that would display better as just a splotch of color. Such are the variations between vector and bitmap graphics, but important if you are looking for size reduction. For a bitmap, I would do the sizing and color depth with IrfanView, but you should be able to do that with PhotoShop if you have it. Vector graphics can be adjusted in Illustrator. The size of vector graphics is not an issue since they are scalable, but the size of a bitmap is important since your are looking at individual pixels and that depends on size. The point is that if you can adjust the color depth and size for the desired pixel resolution, the bitmap is optimized for the conversion to PDF from WORD.
As I mentioned, the smallest file size job options should minimize font storage in the PDF. Checking with the PDF Optimizer does not always give you all of the fonts. I am not sure why. It is better to check the font tab in the document properties to see what has been embedded. There is a preflight macro to embed fonts, you might check to see if there is one to delete fonts (I have not checked on that). Sometimes you can play with the reprint of a PDF, but that is not an option that is generally recommended, particularly if you have any tagging or such. Of course, tagging can really bloat a PDF, but is needed for a variety of reasons such as format for saving back to WORD (not a great workflow), accessability, and related issues. In another topic, there is some discussion of the purposes of tagging and bookmarks. However, the tags and bookmarks take space if that is really an issue for you. The latter are avoided if you use the print to the Adobe PDF printer and do not use PDF Maker in the PDF creation process. Again, there is a trade-off here in terms of size and functionality, particularly accessibility compliance.
Not sure I am helping as I run on, but sort what might be useful for you.

  • A DAW for 4 mics

My daughter is using an Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt with 4 mics and a stereo synthesizer into Garageband. She is recording herself singing and playing a grand piano. She does not like complicating things, but she will go the distance to get an effect. She is a performing artist.
She was told that for her purposes, a Logic Pro purchase would mainly give her many great plug-ins.
    The questions:
    1. For plug-ins alone, would you prefer Logic's library or at the same price, WAVES gold bundle (current special) - or other plug-ins. Part of this question is wondering if WAVES and other plugins have better sound quality attributes than Logic's and/or better (more intuitive) user interfaces?
    2. Perhaps more important than the first question: As a single acoustic recording artist, what functions are in Logic but not Garageband, by which she might benefit? (Latest GB 10.0.3 improves plug-in ability)
    3. A consultant told me he loves creating in Logic, but usually edits in Pro Tools.
What  advantage has PT or REAPER for editing/mixing/finishing over LP?

Logic Pro X comes with a boatload of great FX plugins and also Software Instrument plugins. Whilst Waves may be good, you are unlikely to find any package with the equivalent to LPX's plugins, plus sampled content, loops etc for the price

LPX has many, many functions over and above Garageband, but the important thing for you would be that GB and LPX share the same heritage, and work in a similar way so adapting should not be a problem.

Some would say "workflow", but if you consider cost and time energy learning a second DAW.... you can accomplish most, if not all, that you would need just using Logic.

  • Pentax K-X issues with CS4 (MJPEG codec)

Just got my Pentax K-X and I'm really liking the footage it's able to produce.
I haven't found a great workflow, though, for using it with PPro CS4.  If I import the .avi files as-is, they show up in Premiere with seemingly no issues.  When I try to play them back, though, only a couple of frames show up (it stays on one frame even though the audio keeps going, and if I scrub I get a 2nd frame but nothing else).
I installed the MainConcept Mpeg HD 4 trial as suggested by several forums on a Google search, but now whenever I import the video all I see is black.
The best workaround I've found so far is to open the original .avi with Quicktime Pro and re-save it as a .mov - this takes a couple minutes per clip, which is much better than capturing a HDV tape, but I'd really like to just drag-and-drop these things and start editing.
Any advice from K-X users or even users of the K7 / D90 / etc.?
Also, what's the best way to setup my sequences for this type of video?
    Thanks!

You dont want the MainConcept Mpeg HD 4 but the Mainconcept Motion Jpeg plugin.

Works like a charm on D90 footage.
Project settings need to be the same as the footage.

  • 8.0.2 horrendous bug still exists!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The effects and sample caching bug is horrendous in my opinion. It's been there for years. It wastes huge amounts of my time. While there are some things you can do to minimize these glitches, there are NO 100% reliable work arounds. If you work in Logic and want a professional result you absolutely must listen to the finished bounce very carefully for glitches. These glitches come in many forms and will often times only be noticed after you receive the finished product from the mastering house.
    The main culprits are:
    1. Reverb and delay tails. If you have reverb or delay on a track and you stop playback and move your position, the reverb or delay will begin where it left off.
    2. Samples. For example I often replace kicks and snares with samples. When I go to start a bounce random samples will play at the beginning of the track.
    3. Clicks from compressor and EQ plug ins. These are less obvious, but generally mastering brings them out loud and clear after it's too late.
Keep in mind that these glitches don't generally happen until a split second before a region starts. That means it is very common for them to happen in the middle of the song. Starting and stopping playback a few times does NOT completely clear the cache.
It's a total craps shoot and the most embarrassing, time wasting aspect of Logic.
I really wish I could trust Logic to give me a bounce that is exactly "as expected."
I just sent a bug report... I encourage you all to do the same. They are obviously working on stuff and I think it's our responsibility to make it a priority for them.

    Hi Rohan,
I meant to begin my last post "with all due respect". I read you all the time, you are always well informed, plus you came up with the 8.02 key command fix/discovery..

    hi pancentre,
no mate that's not correct re logic flushing the buffer. that is actually my point - it can't, not the way the audio engine is designed - god, but my memory is sketchy on this - i remember getting the ins and outs of this a long time ago...
Right, I understand exactly what you're saying, this is indeed the way Logic works... my point was it's an archaic system that was devised at a time when computers had 1/1000th the processing power we have now. There's no need for such great efficiency, plugins can be kept partially active, this is how 9 out of 10 DAWs flush the buffers, the plugin is always active to some extent.
one of the things that makes logic efficient is the way it handles plugs - it doesn't process them the whole time - only when there is sound to process.
Agreed, see above. I think this is related to a couple of Logic's other quirks.
Efficiency in one area is causing less efficiency in other areas, the overload messages. What happens when a song is playing and it comes upon three regions with a couple of space designers and an instance sculpture? Instead of these plugs being partially active and using a little processor, they all become active at once and often cause a spike... ie; system overload or other kind of glitch.
it is the 3rd party plugs that have to flush its own audio buffer - its not something logic can effect without changing the way it works to become much less efficient.
but if you were to call it a 'logic bug' then i would find it hard to disagree with you:
Well, I guess it's hard to say but it seems like Apple came up with a workaround for Logic's behaviour and then asked everyone else to do the same. Until Apple version 7.xx Logic's plugins used to do the reverb tails and all other manner of little tics & glitches.
There's still a couple of Logic's plugs that aren't all the way compliant.

  • Visual skinning for spark components

Hi. I am a newbie doing the flex in a week course. It is so easy to set up datagrids but they look awful. This is incredibly important for my company. Skins must look good BUT I just read the flash catalyst is discontinued. What software can I use now to skin my components. I would love to be able to achieve the folowing look you can see here: http://www.desire2learn.com/products/learning-environment/features/measure-guide/
Half way down you can see the type of datagrid I am looking for. Nothing fancy really.
    Cheers in advance
edit: I just had an idea.
You can use any design software to lay out a mock up then just use the x and y properites and colours and shove them in you mxml file fot the skinning. voilá.
    Is that a good workflow?
edit: Just read that people are using fireworks to design and to export to css.
Could somebody confirm this as a great workflow?
    Thanks
