GREP to find two left double-quote marks in a row?

I'm usually pretty good with regexp, but this one is eluding me. I'd like to find a left quote ~{ followed by any number of characters -except- a right quote ~}, followed by aother left quote ~{. It should match a string like (using `` for the left quote):
``The rain in Spain, ``she said.
But not match:
``The rain in Spain,'' she said, ``falls.''
Thanks for the help!

What do you want to accomplish? Do you want to change straight apostrophes into typographic apostrophes?
If it is this what you intent, do following:
In the preferences activate typographic apostrophes, in the dictionary part select each language and put the correct apostrophe.
In the document take care that your paragraph styles have the correct language (and also the character styles)
In GREP change " to ". (Eg. in German it would change a "text" to „text”, but also «text» to „text”.

  • GREP for finding wrong facing apostrophes/quote marks?

    I have this one set up
    (?<=\w)((~[|~{))
    But I'm not 100% convinced
    What I really want to search for is
    any double quote at the start of a word/sentence - but don't include it in the search
    Ignore any text
    Find the left quote or left apostrophe
    I was doing this
    .+?(\>(~{|~[)
    But that was selecting the text before it
    I just want to select the Apostrophe or the Quote marks.

  • How to globally change straight double quotes to curly open and close?

    I am editing with InDesign (5.5) some documents created by others. I suddenly noticed that the double quote marks were straight, not curly, in one document and Find/Change does not seem to offer and option to distiguish the open (left) double quote mark from the right (close) when starting with double straight quotes. Any suggestions?
    And--unrelated--why is so hard to get to a page where you can actually post a question?
    Thanks!
    Jill

    Since the position of a double quotation mark determines its shape, it is easiest to use GREP with Find/Change. You can (1) find a straight quotation mark at the beginning of a word/phrase and change it to left quotation marks, and then (2) find a straight quotation mark at the end of a word/phrase and change it to right quotation marks.
    (1)
    Find what:
    ~"([\l\u\)[:punct:]])
    This finds a straight quotation mark in front of any character or punctuation.
    Change to:
    \x{201C}$1
    This puts a left quotation marks in front of what was behind the straight quotation mark.
    (2)
    Find what:
    ([\l\u\)[:punct:]])~"
    This finds a straight quotation mark behind any character or punctuation.
    Change to:
    $1\x{201D}
    This puts a left quotation mark behind what was behind the straight quotation mark.
    I would find/change the first hits one at a time, and when you are confident that it works for your documents, go ahead and Change All.

  • JS - surrounding selected text with double quotes

    I have a working script which places brackets around selected text in the main body of my document (not in a table), but when I changed the script to insert double curly quotes, the script wont work.
    Why wont this JS work (script stalls on the var line):
    var myObject = (app.selection[0].parent.constructor.name == "Cell") ? app.selection[0].parent.texts[0] : app.selection[0];
    with (myObject)
    insertionPoints[-1].contents = "";
    insertionPoints[0].contents = "";
    while this one does work:
    var myObject = (app.selection[0].parent.constructor.name == "Cell") ? app.selection[0].parent.texts[0] : app.selection[0];
    with (myObject)
    insertionPoints[-1].contents = ")";
    insertionPoints[0].contents = "(";
    Thx Oz
    PS The quotes are showing as three straight quotes above, but in my script they are two straight double quotes surrounding either a right or a left curly double quote.

    Perhaps there's a Smart Quotes interpreter in JS? Who knows.
    If you find it failing again, try inserting the quotes as Unicode values, as these should not be subject to any translating.
    I.e.,
    >insertionPoints[-1].contents = "\u201c";

  • Text Entry Box--Advanced Actions--Conditional Statement--Double quotes in literal input value

    Hello forums,
    I'm new to the forums (and Captivate in general), but I'm having a real problem carrying out a tutorial design and I think you may be my only hope.  Let me explain what I want to do and the difficulty that I'm having:
    I'm an instruction librarian at a university, and I'm designing an interactive tutorial for English 100 students to complete in order to become familiar with how to search the library catalog.  What I've done is taken a screenshot of the catalog search page, made it the background of a slide in Captivate (vers. 6), and placed a text entry box over the search bar in the screenshot.  The idea is for the students to conduct a simulated search by choosing one of three suggested search string formulations, and depending on the search string they enter, the tutorial will jump to a slide featuring a screenshot of what the actual search results would look like.  The idea is to emphasize the use of keywords over full-sentence phrases, and the use of double quotation marks to enclose multi-word search terms.
    So I've set the action for the TEB to "Execute Advanced Actions" and then created some IF/THEN statements in the "Advanced Actions" pop-up window (with action type set to 'conditional'). The script is such that if the student enters the first search option (how does sleep affect college students) in the TEB, the tutorial jumps to 1 slide, if they enter the second option (college students AND sleep), featuring a Boolean operator (AND), the tutorial jumps to a 2nd slide, and if they enter the third option ("college students" AND sleep) with the double quotes around "college students" and the Boolean operator, the tutorial should jump to a 3rd slide.  This action script works fine for the first two input options, but I can't make it work for the third search option.
    I think that it has something to do with the fact that the third input option features double quote marks, and this seems to throw off the script (I tried a quote-less input value for the third IF/THEN just to make sure that it would work jumping to the 3rd slide and it did), and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get around this issue.  Again, I need it to work so that if the student enters "college students" AND sleep, with the quote marks and the Boolean operator, the tutorial will jump to a slide showing the search results if those search terms were used in a real search of the catalog.
    I'd be extremely grateful for any help that anyone here can give me, we've been trying to make our online tutorials more engaging and interactive (and therefore more interesting), and I think this would be a great way to teach students about using quotes in their catalog searches.
    Thank you for your time and consideration.
    Andrew Wilk
    College Library
    UW-Madison

    The tutorial is for a "how to use catalog searching" instruction in an undergraduate library session.  We use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to combine search terms, ex. to search for books about the sleeping habits of college students, I would enter "college students AND sleep."  Because "college students" is a multi-word phrase to describe one concept, I need to put quotation marks around the phrase to prevent the catalog from searching for the individual words separately, so the most correct search becomes ["college students" AND sleep] with quotation marks around only "college students," a user-typed "AND," and the word "sleep" (no q-marks).
    A colleague of mine worked out a pretty cool (if complicated) solution that I'll share if anyone is interested.  Since the q-marks where the problem, we've set it up so that the TEB validates the response for the search string with q-marks around "college students." If they enter it correctly, the tutorial jumps to the corresponding slide. The attempt # is set to 1, and if the user fails to enter the validated phrase (they misspell or use one of the other response options) then the TEB is set to run an Advanced Actions Script in which the other two options are scripted in IF/THEN statements that cause, when the term is entered correctly, the tutorial to jump to their corresponding slides. We've created another tab of IF/THEN statements that say that if the response is NOT equal to one of these response options, then the slide restarts (technically the slide "jumps" back to itself and starts over) and the user gets another chance to start the cycle over again.
    I know this is confusing (I had a really hard time explaining it in words), so if anyone is interested I could make a Jing video when I have some time.
    Thank you for all your suggestions

  • Single and double quotes entered in form field cause corruption?

    I am creating a database change request system using in APEX 2.2 and the main form has a description field (clob) and a API_description field (varchar2(4000)) that are text area fields on the page. The form seems to have trouble when the string data entered into the text area page items on the form contain single and double quotes.
    <br><br>
    I have pasted my test data below in this problem description(this is not true sql but it gets the point accross). I use the wizard created insert process to get the data into the db from the text fields in the wizard generated form, then use the wizard created fetch process to get the data back out and rendered on the same form. When I use the test data below, sometimes a few characters dissappear from my input data on the way out, sometime form fields go away, and their html is interspersed with the previous form field's data on the page. And I get different results on different tests with the same data.
    <br><br>
    Do I have to do something special for a vanilla htmldb text page item on a form to be able to receive single and double quotes in the string input in order to avoid that string data confusing the processing on the way in to the Database or on the way out for rendering?
    <br><br>
    Do I have to escape the characters? How do I do this?
    <br><br>
    The "varchar2(1) := ‘A’" part of the below TEST DATA string seem to cause the most trouble. The behavior is erratic - sometimes the pattern works, sometimes html is interspersed in one place, sometimes another (on the way back out)

    Add column pcl3_data_ind varchar2(1) to edc_tran,edc_log, edc_recreate_tran table

  • GREP to find string of quotes

    I have some strange "strings" of quotes for which I need to search where there are consecutive single and double quotes with nothing between them. So "'"'Wording here.'"' More here."
    Can GREP be used to find a string of quotes that might consist of any number or combination of single and double quotes? The string would consist of either all open or all close quotes but could be any combination of double and single, starting or ending with double or single.
    Thanks,

    For the finding part, there is no need to toggle smart quotes off or on. For example, a single ' will find all three variants, whereas ~[ will only match curly open, ~] curly closed, and ~' only straight ones.
    Other than that, yeah, you want to make sure anyway Curly Quotes is active for the replacements.

    Regards, Vignesh S

    Hi Vignesh,
    Try this.
    Its a two step process:
    Step1: Add the following template would be "called" to do the replacement as your want:
    <xsl:template name="string-replace-all">
    <xsl:param name="text" />
    <xsl:param name="replace" />
    <xsl:param name="by" />
    <xsl:choose>
    <xsl:when test="contains($text, $replace)">
    <xsl:value-of select="substring-before($text,$replace)" />
    <xsl:value-of select="$by" />
    <xsl:call-template name="string-replace-all">
    <xsl:with-param name="text"
    select="substring-after($text,$replace)" />
    <xsl:with-param name="replace" select="$replace" />
    <xsl:with-param name="by" select="$by" />
    </xsl:call-template>
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>
    <xsl:value-of select="$text" />
    </xsl:otherwise>
    </xsl:choose>
    </xsl:template>
    Step2: Call the above templeate in the place where you want to call, like this:
    <!--Define the variables-->
    <xsl:variable name="Description">Hi! "How are you</xsl:variable>
    <xsl:variable name="sQuotes">"</xsl:variable>
    <xsl:variable name="VQuotes">""</xsl:variable>
    <!--Following call the template which you have defined in step1-->
    <xsl:element name="DESCRIPTION_SHORT">
    <xsl:variable name="myVar">
    <xsl:call-template name="string-replace-all">
    <xsl:with-param name="text" select="$Description" />
    <xsl:with-param name="replace" select="$sQuotes" />
    <xsl:with-param name="by" select="$VQuotes" />
    </xsl:call-template>
    </xsl:variable>
    <xsl:value-of select="$myVar" />
    </xsl:element>
    I have tested this and works. And outputs as the following with two-double quote as you want.
    <DESCRIPTION_SHORT>Hi!
    ""How are you</DESCRIPTION_SHORT>

  • Grep that finds curly quotes and changes to straight ones, but only after digits....

    Hello
    I am trying to find all the curly quotes that follow numbers and turn them into straight quotes.
    I am going to try and put this in a GREP style eventually, but in the meantime, I was testing it with find and change.
    Here is what I did......but it doesn't work.
    For the Find what- I did a positive look behind to find a digit and then pasted in the curly quote
    Fort the change to-I found the Unicode value for the straight quote.
    But it didn't work ;-(
    any thoughts out there!!
    babs

    Well, I'm no Engineer, and I suppose it would require all the font
    manufacturers to rebuild the fonts to handle it the same as small
    No...given that All Caps, is handled by InDesign without special
    font support, this feature could work the same way. A Character
    panel option (like All Caps) that Forces Straight Quotes.
    Or maybe that was your point. (?)
    It can certainly be done.
    Question is merely whether it should be done.
    But how much worse can it get than all those airplanes falling from the sky
    How could you ask such a thing? Surely having the entire universe
    sucked into a rift and enveloped in eternal blackness without sunshine,
    light, or heat is far worse than a few aluminum chassis falling into the
    ocean and there being no power grid to run InDesign unless you purchased
    the hand-crank version!

However in the version that is deployed on Red Hat the double quotes are not displaying correctly and instead display question marks in their place. The import of the database schema worked and the data is in fact double quotes. Wondering what setting I can change that makes this server treat the same data as the other environments?

    Hi,
    What is your account type? IMAP, POP or Exchange?
    Send an email from the webmail, ask the recipient if this issue persists.
    As far as I know, this problem is always related to the encoding for outgoing messages, and here I suggest you try UTF-8:
    Go to File -> Options -> Advanced -> International options -> Uncheck "Automatically select encoding for outgoing messages", then select "Unicode (UTF-8)" beside "Preferred encoding for outgoing messages" -> OK.
    Hope this helps.

  • Pages 5.2.2, every line ends with a quote mark

    Hello, hope someone can help with this problem.
    As soon as I start to type words in Pages, a double quotation mark appears after my words.  Can anyone advise how to stop this happening?
    If I type with invisibles on, the quote mark doesn't appear.
    Others in the office running the same software don't have this problem.  Is there something wrong with my setup?
    Thanks very much.
    Allen

    Pages v5.2.2 is an entirely different application than Pages ’09. Because it lacks over 100 features/functionality available in Pages ’09, it will quietly filter content from older documents that it doesn't support. That's one issue.
    Is anyone else in your office using the Interstate font with Pages v5.2.2, and the same OS X 10.9 release?
    Here are two simple things you can do, though I am betting on item 2 that will rebuild your system and local user font databases.
    Use Disk Utility to verify/repair your permissions
    Boot into Safe Boot Mode
    Shutdown
    At the boot chime, press and hold the shift key until you see a grey, horizontal progress bar
    At the login prompt, after you type in your password, and before you click the arrow to login
    Press and hold the shift key until you are logged in with the Finder menu bar showing
    Test Pages v5.2.2 with your Interstate font (things will be slower because of Safe Boot Mode)
    Reboot normally

    grep {findWhat:" ([.,:;])"} {changeTo:"$1"} {includeFootnotes:true, includeMasterPages:true, includeHiddenLayers:true, wholeWord:false} Remove space before period et al.
    (Remember the script needs TABS between the sections, as in the original file.)
    This one is a bit challenging. Actually, the period is a special character in GREp (it stands for "any character"), so normally you would need to escape it:
    (space)\.
    to search for a space followed by a period. However, the square brackets [...] define an OR group, and that removes the magic properties from the period. Apparently, there is no use for a wildcard character in an OR group! (That would be something like, "The following characters are allowed: a comma, a colon, any at all, a semi-colon ...")
    There is a more advanced way to remove spaces like these. You want to look for spaces which are followed by any of these characters, and replace them with nothing. That would be
    {findWhat:" (?=[.,:;])"} {changeTo:""}
    You can try this in the interface to see it works.
    The second can be done using the Unicode value for an ellipsis ("\x{2026}" -- another notation than in the regular Text find), or with the special escape code "~e". Yup -- there is another escape character. The backslash is used by GREP itself, but GREP does not understand InDesign's own special characters -- page breaks, smart single and double quotes, Indent-To-Here, em dashes, and a few others. They can also be inserted from the menu on the right side of the Find field. These characters need a tilde, so InDesign can "translate" them internally to something GREP can use, and GREP never sees them. Since the tilde is nothing special for Javascript, you can safely insert only one in the script data file ...
    To remove a space before or after an ellipsis, you could use this:
    grep {findWhat:" ?~e ?"} {changeTo:"~e"}
    ... but in this case it may again be simpler to stick to regular text mode (where you would use "^e" for the ellipsis, by the way).

  • Pages won't break line between quote mark and parenthesis?

    Working on a manuscript in Pages, I find it won't do a line break between a quote mark and a parenthesis. For instance, there is the following text string:
    Buddha” (buddhavacana)
    Pages insists on keeping this string together, even if there's plenty of room on the previous line for the word Buddha” -- it will space out the previous line horribly to keep these two words together. If I remove the close-quote ” (which can be either a typewriter-style quote mark or curly), or the open parenthesis before the next word, it moves Buddha to the previous line. Doesn't matter what the words are, either; it can be:
    xxx” (xxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
    When I go to another paragraph and add a close quote to a word at the end of a line, then an open parenthesis to the word at the beginning of the next line, suddenly they're stuck together, both moved to the second line, leaving the first line grossly spaced out.
    If there's both a quote mark and an open parenthesis (even though they are separated by a space, thus should break between them when appropriate), Pages insists they have to stay together. The only way I can separate them is by putting a paragraph break (return) between them, which causes other problems.
    Anyone have any idea why this happens, if Pages can be told not to do it?

    I wrote about that because I was surprised to get a closing curly one when I typed a straight one just after the word buddha.  I assumed, wrongly, that, as there was no opening double quote before, I would get an opening one.
    I understood later that the app decipher the typed char as a kind of apostrophe which is highly surprising when the app is running in French. The English curly quote buddha” may make sense (I'm not convinced that it really does) but the French chevron buddha» doesn't.
    Forcing the opening char:
    buddha“ or  buddha«gave the same behavior which I thought to be odd.
    I know that it's not a common practice but when I study a behavior, I try to examine it in all its aspects.
    Back to what make or doesn't make sense, I understand the behavior of buddha’ but not the buddha” 's one.
    I never saw a double quote used as an apostrophe character.
    So, I will file a report to Bugs Hunters.
