Group Policy Infrastructure Failed : The target name is incorrect

Hi,
I am currently facing issues regarding Group Policy, users are unable to change the password.
When i run gpupdate /force on servers, the user policy and computer policy are successful but when i run the same on any client i receive error as per below,
" C:\Windows\system32>gpupdate /force

User policy could not be updated successfully. The following errors were encountered:

p Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could
be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to th

c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.
Computer Policy update has completed successfully.
To diagnose the failure, review the event log or run GPRESULT /H GPReport.html from the command line to a

Okay, we had an issue on our server and we reverted to a snapshot. But now certain users are getting the error, "the target name is incorrect". Not all users are having this issue. I can access the mapped drives on one computer, but not another.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!

  • Group Policy Shortcuts Fail: The system cannot find the path specified.

The executable I'm pointing to is under C:\Foldername\file.exe
I know it's there, I tested it, I pasted the very same path into the run dialog, it works. The path is correct, so why can't group policy find it?
I even tried putting the exe in the root of C:\ and pointing the shortcut there, it can't even see it there. Is it blind? I can see it. I'm looking right at it.

I fixed it myself. Turns out Microsoft's error messages are obnoxiously non-helpful. The error was referring to the icon path not the target file path.  I had to select programs from the drop down list and then set the path.
It would help if Microsoft would document this a lot better, and perhaps enhance their event log errors so that they don't send people on confusing wild goose chases that drive people insane.

When attempting to setup Group Policy Objects, I continually get the "Failed to Open Group Policy Object" Error.  This is driving me nuts and seems to be a 49 error.. which I have done a ton of research on but none of the suggested fixes seem

I had to do a Non-authoratative SYSVOL restore on our DC that is setup to be the primary DC on our network (RID, PDC, Infrastructure).
The GPO was not updating correctly when applied to workstations.
Today, I now see the following error when I do a GPRESULT /H.
Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Can you run gpupdate/force successfully on workstations? Before going further, the following thread focused on the similar issue and can be referred to as reference for troubleshooting.

  • Wireless Group Policy Problem - Half the policy applying

    Hi
I'm at a loss for where to investigate this one so I'm hoping for some suggestions.
We have a single GPO to send out settings for wireless access to our network. On the wireless we have two SSIDs as below.
    1. Staff SSID
My manager wanted to reduce the security issues with this as much as possible, so I've generated a GUID for the SSID name, set it not to broadcast the SSID and set the group policy to show the network as "<company
name> Staff". It uses WPA2-Enterprise with RADUIS authentication to silently pass the authentication credentials of the currently logged on user providing SSO.
    2. Guests SSID
This uses a preshared WPA2 key and provides guests with internet access and is blocked from the local LAN.
The GPO is applied in such a way that company laptops are have the Staff SSID displayed in the available connection list, they're allowed to connect to it (as long as they're in the appropriate AD group for RADIUS authentication) but they are blocked from
connecting their laptops to the Guests SSID. The important thing is that this single GPO controls both settings.
On a few laptops we have been noticing that the blocking of the Guests SSID is working fine, but the Staff SSID is failing to show. Its as if only half the policy is applying. This is happening to only a small number of laptops which reside in the same AD
OUs and it doesn't matter who logs on, the same problem occurs. The laptop is able to view all other wireless networks in the vicinity.
I have logged in to one as myself (with Domain Admin permissions) and I get this problem, but on other laptops, the policy applies completely allowing me to connect to the Staff SSID while blocking the Guests SSID, as it should.
I've run a RSOP against the laptop which shows that the policy is applying (confirmed by the fact that the Guests SSID is blocked) and the only problem I can find in the event logs are for the EapHost service with event ID of 2002. I've followed the advice
in a few forum posts below but have been unsucccessful (not even sure if it's related to the GPO issue).
    http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-2002-source-Microsoft-Windows-EapHost-eventno-10874-phase-1.htm
    http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/336450-event-id-2002-source-eaphost-eap-method-dll-path-name-failed.html
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Daverino,
Since RSOP shows that the policy has been applied, it should not be a grouppolicy issue.
According yourdescription, it seems that the system of the laptop has been changedby the user data.
Could you please post the original information about event 2002? It is useful for further troubleshooting.

  • Connection Failed: The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable...

So I think I know what caused this problem, but I can't figure out how to make it stop...
When I go to print, if I try to click on the pop-up to change the default printer setting, there's a LONG delay, then I get a dialog that says:
    Connection Failed
The server "name" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, then try again.
Then there's another delay and I get the message a second time. I can then select any of my printer settings and print fine, it's just an annoying delay if I click on that pop-up accidentally or need to change it.
I have a new iMac and I migrated from my old G5. The "name" of the server it is seeking is my old G5, so that must be in the settings somewhere, but I can't find it. I tried going into the Print & Fax settings in System Preferences, deleting the printer there, and then re-adding, but that didn't clear it up.
Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Hmm, well, this stopped working again for me. I tried swapping ethernet and re-installing the Airport client update - to no avail. I could always see my Mac shares from PCs though. However, I have (for now) managed to connect to the PC using ip address rather than name even though finder quite clearly sees the name. Does your printer connection work by ip rather than name ? I'm going to play name lookup detective for a bit now - it's some kind of Netbios name lookup issue I guess as I've no local DNS service. resolv.conf is apparently not used so a bit of learning to do! ...
... nmblookup seems to work but nslookup doesn't. Looks like SL connect via Finder isn't using nmblookup properly and I can't see how to make that work. When this gets reported enough it should get a publicised work-round or a fix. If only I can get dig/nslookup to slave out to nmblookup ...must be something I can configure for that ??

  • Cannot 'Consolidate Library" : Copying music failed , the file name was too

    Hi,
I am trying to move all the music library to my new computer ( this is my 3rd time of changing my PC). I tried to consolidate the library... but the message was
Copying music failed , the file name was invalid or too long"
I already moved the Itunes to my new pc, but my new Itunes cannot "Relocating my file"
    Please help me

To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file
copied - and then go back to your source, and go to
the next one - it should be that one.
I just wanted to add that I had the same issue (failure to finish copying and "invalid or too long" error msg) and at first didn't see how looking for the last file copied would work since iTunes is copying into folders.
    Duh.
Reverse sort by date modified (newest folder at the top of the list) then drill down to the folder containing the files being copied. Voila. There was the (missing) culprit, and I knew which file to rename in the source folder.
Thanks for the kick in the brain pan.

"attempting to copy to the disk C:\ failed. the file name was invalid or too long." This was the message that I keep getting after trying to "add folder to library" of multiple tracks from an external hard drive. it only happens after a certain period of time.. i get about half of my tracks added before this message pops up. when i first got my i pod it worked fine. but after i hooked up my i pod several times without having that external drive on... the i pod took over that drive letter that my external drive used to use. so.. when i turned on my external drive, it was given a new letter.. then i tunes would not recognize those 1500 tracks that came from my external drive (explanation points listed next to tracks). so.. I deleted all of those files manually, then tried to add folder to library again from the new letter coordinating to my external hd. I kept getting that message above. after that i deleted all files associated with i tunes.. and uninstalled i tunes.. then did a reinstall.. did i tunes update from site... and tried to just add the set of tracks from that external hd... still same **** error. only now.. after i say ok to error... i tunes continues for like 2 seconds.. then has to shut down... ****!!! can anyone help me with this... anyone?

just to update my problem... I finally figured out that i had to disable the "copy to my itunes folder from my library option. just so you know. apparently i tunes cant handle the large transfer to itunes and also at the same time copy it to your itunes folder... • How to specify the target name while deploying a code in OSB-- Plz Help

    Hi all,
Am working in creating a cluster environment. For my testing i created a new managed server(OSB_Server) in 9001 port in the admin console itself and that server started running. The default managed server(Admin_Server) is in 7001 port. So when i deploy a code in 7001 sb console the WSDL gets exposed in 7001 because the default admin server port is 7001. While deploying a code in service bus admin console we are not specifying the target name. So how to specify the target name while deploying the code in service bus admin console. Plz help me.
    Regards
    Prabhu

    Hi Prabhu,
There are three kind of server architecture possible for OSB -
    1. Single server - Everything gets deployed on Admin server itself
    2. Admin Server + Single Managed Server for OSB -- OSB configuration gets deployed on OSB managed server. OSB resources (proxy service, WSDL, Schema) will remain available on OSB managed server port only and NOT on admin server port
    3. Admin Server + OSB cluster -- OSB configuration gets deployed on OSB cluster. OSB resources (proxy service, WSDL, Schema) will remain available on OSB Cluster port(s) only and NOT on admin server port
Converting one type of server architecture to any other type, requires a manual tedious process, so it is suggested that you create domain accordingly i.e. if you need clusters then while creating domain itself, create OSB cluster, so that all OSB applications gets deployed to OSB cluster. I will suggest you to create a clustered domain from scratch and import the configuration from your existing domian to this new clustered domain.

  • How to use Group Policy to remove the shutdown button on the logon screen

Environment:  Shared use computers running Window 7 Professional and MS office Suite; Windows 2008 Standard server, Windows 7 EC Domain Policy and MS Office 2007 ADML Template downloaded from Microsoft. WIndows 7 Accounts OU.
I am in the process of developing a shared use computer lockdown policy for several Windows 7 computers that will made available in my client's computer lab.  I need to use a group policy setting to remove the Shut Down button on
the logon screen of the Windows 7 client computers.  I am editing the Windows 7 EC Domain Policy to user accounts in a Windows 7 Accounts OU that I created.  I am using the Group Policy editor in the Group Policy Management Console.
Please let me know the best practice for accomplishing this using Group Policy editor.
    Thanks.
P.S. I tried a setting recommended in the following link in the Windows 7 EC Domain Policy which did not seem to work.

    Hi Vernon,
I tried the group policy you mentioned (Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, and select Security Options, "Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on") and it worked on a Windows 7 client.
Thus you may need to check if the group policy you created is actually applied to clients.

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, this event is most likely related to permissions. We need to make sure that users can access the shortcut file.
Besides, which startup folder do we use?
As stated in the following thread by Darien, Windows has two Startup folders:
    Windows has two Startup folders.
    One located in
c:\users\xxxx\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup.  This one is owned and controlled by the interactive user; therefore, he or she can write to this folder.
The other one is located at
c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup.  This folder is a system folder in which interactive users must provided elevated credentials.

  • Group Policy Printers failing - Windows 8.1 Enterprise

Been struggling with this for years, across the past several versions of Windows.
Currently we're on Windows 8.1 Enterprise, deployed in a lab environment. I'd like to get the entire lab connected to a shared printer for any user who logs in.
First of all, which Group Policy option should I be using? Computer or User? Policy or Preference? There seems to be four different ways to deploy a printer. It is a shared printer on a 2008R2 server.
Second, I've been using a User Preference for the time being with "update" as the command. It will work most of the time, but every now and then a user will log on and see no printers. Event logs show entries that range from "printer unavailable"
to "name is incorrect", which is all weird. No printer configurations have changed. Other times a user will see a printer but nothing will happen when they go to print. Still other times, and I've only seen this since we've been on Windows 8.1, a
user will see 60 or 70 printers in Devices and Printers, all with the same name, and none of them working.
This is a heavily used lab, with dozens of users logging on and off each computer every day. I'm just trying to determine the most reliable way of giving each user a printer. Thanks for anyone who can help.

    Hi,
I suggest deploying your computer under User configuration with GPP. Printers deployed under the user configuration will allow easier management. You can configure printers to set themselves as the default. You can also change a printer preference (such
as duplexing) without redeploying the printer. If you use print queue management software (like Print Manager Plus), you must use a user side printer. The downside is the printer installation will be slower. Every new user logging onto the computer will have
to wait as the printer installs.
Please clear previous GP for deploying printer and check suggestions here:
GP Preferences: Add a new printer, set as default
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2009/06/24/gp-preferences-set-a-default-printer.aspx
After deployment, please check the gpresult by running following command and see if it is deployed properly:
    gpresult /s ComputerName /user Domain\UserName /h c:\gpreport.html
Note: Here, ComputerName is the name of the computer that you want to log policy results for and Domain\UserName indicates the user that you want to log policy results for.

  • Group policy error: Failed to open group policy object on this computer.

    Hi all,
I received this message when i tried to look at the local group policy setting on one of my machines (Windows XP SP3), which is joined in my domain.
"Failed to open group policy object on this computer. You may not have appropriate rights.
    Details:
    Unspecified error."
note that I am local admin.
It's all started when I was troublshooting WSUS connectivity and i looked at the WinsdowsUpdate.log, the WSUS server was <Null> & WSUS status server <Null>, I tried to force the domain GP by using GPupdate /force, it went fine and asked to
log off, but nothing changed in the WindowsUpdate.log still <Null>. Then i tried to look at the local policy setting.
I searched the internet nothing related to my case.
    Thanks in advance for advising.

I guess reinstall windows is the solution, I also found one log "event id 1096", related to "registry.pol" it was corrupted.

    Hi Frank,
We have done Teaming for the server. Its HP Proliant DL 380 G7. From than we are not able to take the GPOs backup.
As per the below information from the Sandesh. Please check the Point No 2.

Also ensure the correct dns setting on DC:
    1. Each DC / DNS server points to its private IP address as primary DNS server and other remote/local DNS servers as secondary in TCP/IP properties.
    2. Each DC has just one IP address and single network adapter is enabled.
    3. Contact your ISP and get valid DNS IPs from them and add it in to the forwarders, Do not set public DNS server in TCP/IP setting of DC.
    4. Once you are done, run "ipconfig /flushdns & ipconfig /registerdns", restart DNS and NETLOGON service each DC.
Do not put private DNS IP addresses in forwarder list.
    Best Regards,
    Sandesh Dubey.
