Group Policy Printers failing - Windows 8.1 Enterprise

Been struggling with this for years, across the past several versions of Windows.
Currently we're on Windows 8.1 Enterprise, deployed in a lab environment. I'd like to get the entire lab connected to a shared printer for any user who logs in.
First of all, which Group Policy option should I be using? Computer or User? Policy or Preference? There seems to be four different ways to deploy a printer. It is a shared printer on a 2008R2 server.
Second, I've been using a User Preference for the time being with "update" as the command. It will work most of the time, but every now and then a user will log on and see no printers. Event logs show entries that range from "printer unavailable"
to "name is incorrect", which is all weird. No printer configurations have changed. Other times a user will see a printer but nothing will happen when they go to print. Still other times, and I've only seen this since we've been on Windows 8.1, a
user will see 60 or 70 printers in Devices and Printers, all with the same name, and none of them working.
This is a heavily used lab, with dozens of users logging on and off each computer every day. I'm just trying to determine the most reliable way of giving each user a printer. Thanks for anyone who can help.

Hi,
I suggest deploying your computer under User configuration with GPP. Printers deployed under the user configuration will allow easier management. You can configure printers to set themselves as the default. You can also change a printer preference (such
as duplexing) without redeploying the printer. If you use print queue management software (like Print Manager Plus), you must use a user side printer. The downside is the printer installation will be slower. Every new user logging onto the computer will have
to wait as the printer installs.
Please clear previous GP for deploying printer and check suggestions here:
GP Preferences: Add a new printer, set as default
http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2009/06/24/gp-preferences-set-a-default-printer.aspx
After deployment, please check the gpresult by running following command and see if it is deployed properly:
gpresult /s ComputerName /user Domain\UserName /h c:\gpreport.html
Note: Here, ComputerName is the name of the computer that you want to log policy results for and Domain\UserName indicates the user that you want to log policy results for.

    Hi Ahmed,
    >>Windows failed to apply the Group Policy Printers settings. Group Policy Printer

Were we using GPP Printer extension to deploy printers? Did we deploy printers to user accounts or computer accounts? Besides, what printer did we depoly via GPP, local printer, share printer, or TCP/IP printer? Here, we can check event
logs in Event Viewer to see if more information regarding this issue can be found. Besides, we can also run command
gpresult/h gpreport.html to further check how group policy settings were applied. If necessary, we can enable GPP Printer debug logging for troubleshooting the issue.
To enable GPP Printer debug logging, we need to enable the following setting:
Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Group Policy > Logging and Tracing>Configure printer preferences logging and tracing
Regarding how to enable GPP debug logging, the following article can be referred to for more information.

  • Stuck at Applying Group Policy Printers Policy on Windows 2008 Servers

xp clients seem to be fine and map all printers at logon. The 2k8 servers all hang at logon for 30min or more at the Applying Group Policy Printers Policy. The print server is a DC in the same domain and it does not experience the issues at logon and gets to the desktop immediately.

  • Event 4098 Group Policy Printers, Printers intermittently don't deploy

     Hi,
On a similar vein to this topic We also deploy printers Via the Server 2008 group policy preferences. All our PC's are Vista Business 32bit SP1. The problem we are having is that intermittently the printer will not install at logon. If you logoff and back on again it is there. On one particular PC I found this event in the Applications log.
    Log Name:      Application
    Source:        Group Policy Printers
    Date:          13/01/2009 4:07:48 PM
    Event ID:      4098
    Task Category: (2)
    Level:         Warning
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          SYSTEM
    Computer:      E-HSS.cygnet.library.uwa.edu.au
    Description:
The user 'HSSClient1' preference item in the 'Client Vista Domain Policy SP1 {A85CA6F0-874B-467F-B50A-939E64932884}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070709 The printer name is invalid.' This error was suppressed.
    Event Xml:
      <System>
        <Provider Name="Group Policy Printers" />
        <EventID Qualifiers="34305">4098</EventID>
        <Level>3</Level>
        <Task>2</Task>
        <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>

        <Computer>E-HSS.cygnet.library.uwa.edu.au</Computer>
        <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" />
Now if this error happened every time we would change the name of the printer to be something more "Valid" but it doesn't and we can logon again and the printer installs fine. Can someone explain to me why it thinks HSSClient1 is invalid intermittently?
From this thread I investigated the print processor of one of our printer queues and found is was not set to 'WinPrint' So on HSSClient1 I set the print processor to 'WinPrint'.  Do all printers managed/deployed by Group Policy preferences need to have their processor set to WinPrint?

    Hi,
Regarding print processors , third party print processors are supported but not recommended. Print processors are user-mode dynamic-link libraries that are responsible for converting the spooled data of a print job to a format that can be sent to a print monitor. Print processors are also responsible for handling program requests to pause, to resume, and to cancel print jobs. But Print processors would be started during system startup. It’s not related to this GPO issue.
This issue may occur if you create the Printer as TCP/IP printer. Please try to delete the original printer and try to create a new shared Printer in Group Policy Preferences.
However, if it’s the original printer is not TCP/IP printer, please also try to recreate it and help to run the MPS report (PFE version) on the clients to collect reports. The MPS Reporting Tool is utilized to gather detailed information regarding a systems current configuration. The data collected will assist you with fault isolation.
A . Please download MPS Reporting Tool (MPSRPT_PFE.EXE) from the following link:
Please note: The link may be truncated when you read the E-mail. Be sure to include all text between '(' and ')' when navigating to the download location.
B . Right click MPSRPT_PFE.EXE and select Run as Administrator to run this tool, and you will see a Command Window start up.
    C . Please type Y with the message of <Include the MSINFO32 report? (defaults to Y in 15 seconds)[Y,N]?
D . When the tool is done you will see an Explorer Window opening up the %systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab folder and containing a <Computername>MPSReports.cab file. After collecting, please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address.
    Thanks.

  • Win 2K8 R2 - Group Policy Management - Failed to Open Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate rights. The network path was not found.

New to Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration.
I setup this Windows 2008 R2 Server on a Dell 2950 Poweredge server and have been migrating users off of an old NT style domain running on Samba 3.6 on CentOS.
I have the domain setup (nicholas.sacredheartsaratoga.org), added users, and have moved users / computers over to the new domain and working.
When attempting to setup Group Policy Objects, I continually get the "Failed to Open Group Policy Object" Error.  This is driving me nuts and seems to be a 49 error.. which I have done a ton of research on but none of the suggested fixes seem
    to be working.
I've been working at this for a couple of weeks and really need this fixed to be able to set GPO's correctly.

  • Group Policy Printers errors

    Hello everybody,
We have a problem since few weeks with printers deployment.
Intermittently, they are not deployed and we have errors 4098 in Event ID with codes :
    - '0x8007000a The environment is incorrect'
    - '0x8007007a The data area passed to a system call is too small'
    - '0x80070005 Access denied'
Our server is a Windows 2008 R2 and clients are Windows7.
We have already read these topics :
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/24dfd6c0-b460-40a7-ad18-13e404b361e7/group-policy-printers-dissapearing-from-client-machines-intermittently
It was already enabled (Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy\Printers Policy Processing ->
Do not apply during periodic background processing)
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Active_Directory/Q_26220975.html
We have tried to delete printers at logoff but nothing changed.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/7d3809c4-9f36-4412-9c9f-d82614ba3eb9/printers-not-applied-error-4098-0x80070005-access-is-denied
By default we have everybody can print. To be sure, we have added "Domain Computers" but same result.
We have tried to create :
    - New GPO to deploy old printers queues => no changes.
    - New printers queues and deploy with old GPO => no changes.
    - New GPO to deploy new printers queue => no changes.
Our GPO is set like this :
    - [Computer configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/System/Group Policy]
    ○ Configure printers preference extension policy processing => all enabled
    ○ Configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode => Merge
    - [User configuration/Preferences/Control Panel Settings/Printers/Shared Printer/printername]
    ○ General => Sharepath
    \\server\printername
    ○ Common => Remove this item when it is no longer applied
In a desperate hope we have reinstall completely some clients but we still have sometimes "Environment is incorrect".
We don't know anymore what to do…
Can you help us please ?

  • Users cannot access removable devices after you enable and then disable a Group Policy setting in Windows 7 64 Bit

Users cannot access removable devices after you enable and then disable a Group Policy setting on Windows 7 64 bit machines.
on the 32 bit machines I was able to apply this hotfix
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2738898
But it will not install on 64 bit machines.
Is there a hotfix for 64 bit?  If not, what is the work around?
    Thanks!

  • Group Policy Infrastrutre failed

I had to do a Non-authoratative SYSVOL restore on our DC that is setup to be the primary DC on our network (RID, PDC, Infrastructure).
The GPO was not updating correctly when applied to workstations.
Today, I now see the following error when I do a GPRESULT /H.
Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Can you run gpupdate/force successfully on workstations? Before going further, the following thread focused on the similar issue and can be referred to as reference for troubleshooting.

  • Group Policy Managed Software Windows 8.1

    Hi
Is software installation/assigned applications in group policy supported in Windows 8.1 as they don't seem to work correctly.  We either have them hanging at startup or they reinstall each time even though its already installed it.
I can't find anything searching online regarding Windows 8.1 and deploying software this way with group policy.

    > Is software installation/assigned applications in group policy supported
    > in Windows 8.1 as they don't seem to work correctly.  We either have
    > them hanging at startup or they reinstall each time even though its
    > already installed it.
Does it work correctly with older OS versions? Maybe it's not an issue
of Win 8.1, but of the MSI itself?
Unfortunately, GPO MSI deployment debug logging is broken in Windows 8
and above, so you'll have a hard time digging that down...

  • Failed to Connect "Group Policy Client Service" Windows 7 x64

This error pops up everytime boot / start-up. I've tried everything, for the last month.  including
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2421599 In the "Resolution Section" did step by step, But did not work for me...
    Also
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mempson/archive/2010/01/10/userenvlog-for-windows-vista-2008-win7.aspx  Didn't work either.  :(
Is this a Winlogin problem? Or does have to do with other computers in my homegroup?
But in Safe Mode & Safe Mode with Networking, this issue does Not appear / pop-up at start up. "Group Policy Client Service"
""HP Premium Remote Services"" tells me that in order to fix, I have to Re-Install Windows. And have been in contact today with Hp Premium Remote Services for over 7 hours with NO Resolution!!
Hate to make a Recovery Partition on a New PC, in order to Re-Install Windows...
This is a Brand New HP Pavilion HPE H8-1234 AMD Processor that I installed on 7/23/2012. Running windows 7 64-bit home premium, OS: Internet Explorer 9.
Have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate using Anytime Upgrade, My question is would that rectify the "Group Policy Client Service" error?
Always run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Hitman Pro, in addition with Norton, on a regular basis. So that I know my system is clean...
Any MS Engineers or Tech's have any ideas, suggestions OR help, How to Fix this issue,With-Out having to use: System Recovery/Restore. To factory condition...
Would be Very Greatly Appreciated! HELP Me Pleeeze !!!!
***Because this issue Baogles my Mind! After all I'am only dealing with half a Brain, LOL- Due to Brain Tumor Surgery...

I FOUND SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM!
I had this issue on my laptop since November, and it really bugged me.  I sifted through the event log and found the pattern of events that preceded the issue, and, probably, caused it.
In short, the pattern is as follows: Windows updates run automatically as scheduled, and when reboot is initiated after the updates are finished, the computer crashes (probably during reboot sequence).  When it boots up, it reports that the last shutdown
was unexpected, and the issue begins to occur.
I spent 2 days trying to dig out a solution from the Internet, to no avail, until I came across
this page.  It doesn't say anything about this particular problem, but it gives more information about SVCHOST process that starts many services, including Group Policy Client.  It looks like during reboot a vital registry settings were lost during
crash and Group Policy Client "doesn't know" how to start.  Let me explain:
There are two places to look in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services this path should contain
gpsvc key (a folder), which is responsible for service parameters and configuration.  I found that the key was intact, so, you do not touch anything here - just check that the key exists.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SVCHOST This is the most important path you should look into, as it must contain the keys and values referred in the key #1.  Below are descriptions what must be present
    there.
There must be Multi-String value called GPSvcGroup. My laptop was missing it.  So, you should create multi-string value named
GPSvcGroup and assign it value GPSvc.
Next, you must create a key (a folder) and name it GPSvcGroup - this key normally should be there, but, again, it was missin on my laptop.
Then open newly-created GPSvcGroup folder and create 2 DWORD values:
First called AuthenticationCapabilities and you must give it a value of 0x00003020 (or 12320 in decimal)
Second is called CoInitializeSecurityParam and it must have value of 1.
Once you complete all steps above, reboot the computer and the problem will be fixed.
I am so relieved I was able to fix it, and hope this will help others with the similar issue.
Here is the link to the video walkthrough if you have any troubles understanding what has to be done: http://youtu.be/4m5KEmckWK4
I did try the above, but it did not fix my issue with the ""group policy client service failed the logon".
This problem was happening on 5 different RDS Nodes. All I did was rename the Roaming Profile, then delete the locally stored profile on each RDS Server: right click COMPUTER > PROPERTIES > ADVANCED SYSTEM SETTINGS > USER PROFILES > delete the
    offending User(s).
    Hope that helps.

  • Windows 2008R2 Group Policy Printers

We recently deployed our Printers via GP clients are all Windows 7 64bit. We have both 2003 and 2008R2 domain controllers - dhcp server  and FSMO roles are on the 2008 DC.
This is also where the printers are installed. For some reason every since we installed these printers, logon time has been increased. Even after the print drivers have been installed on the clients. Also I have noticed that when selecting a printer from
Office (2010 32bit) that it takes forever for it to become ready.
We do not have any network issues. And the problem did not exist when we deployed the same printers via a vbs logon script. Any help/suggestions? I read somewhere that on 2000/2003 server you could apply something (GPO/Script) for clients to continue to
logon while GP was being applied. Not sure if that can help me.
Also not sure why it is taking so long for the printers to go to ready from the clients side?
    Thanks - SJMP

    Hi,
Please check the slow-link detection parameter. And also , set to "0" to "Maximum wait time for group policy objects"  set. You can look to following document to do this.

  • Group Policy Shortcut Fails to Get Created

I get the following error in the Event Log.
    Log Name:      Application
    Source:        Group Policy Shortcuts
    Date:          2/28/2014 4:55:55 PM
    Event ID:      4098
    Task Category: (2)
    Level:         Warning
    Keywords:      Classic

    Description:

I was trying to put "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\SelfServicePlugin\SelfService.exe" into the startup folder for members of a specific group. That file exists, it's there, I've put the short cut to it manually into Startup and it works. This
makes no rational sense at all. The file is most certainly there, why doesn't it see the file?
All other shortcuts from GPP work fine.  Here are the properties below:
    Target type
    File system object
    Shortcut path
    %StartUpDir%\Citrix Receiver
    Target path
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\SelfServicePlugin\SelfService.exe"

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\SelfServicePlugin\"

    No
Run in logged-on user's security context (user policy option)
    Yes
Remove this item when it is no longer applied
    Yes

    Hi,
Based on my knowledge, this event is most likely related to permissions. We need to make sure that users can access the shortcut file.
Besides, which startup folder do we use?
As stated in the following thread by Darien, Windows has two Startup folders:
    Windows has two Startup folders.
    One located in
c:\users\xxxx\appdata\roaming\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup.  This one is owned and controlled by the interactive user; therefore, he or she can write to this folder.
The other one is located at
c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\startup.  This folder is a system folder in which interactive users must provided elevated credentials.

  • Group policy error: Failed to open group policy object on this computer.

    Hi all,
I received this message when i tried to look at the local group policy setting on one of my machines (Windows XP SP3), which is joined in my domain.
"Failed to open group policy object on this computer. You may not have appropriate rights.
    Details:
    Unspecified error."
note that I am local admin.
It's all started when I was troublshooting WSUS connectivity and i looked at the WinsdowsUpdate.log, the WSUS server was <Null> & WSUS status server <Null>, I tried to force the domain GP by using GPupdate /force, it went fine and asked to
log off, but nothing changed in the WindowsUpdate.log still <Null>. Then i tried to look at the local policy setting.
I searched the internet nothing related to my case.
    Thanks in advance for advising.

  • Failed Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 to Windows 2008 Enterprise OS Upgrade

Attempted to upgrade the OS on our Primary Domain Controller which is running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise with Service Pack 2 installed on a HP ProLiant DL360 G4P Server with 2GB of ram, 3.2 GHz Processor and 53.2 GB of free space on C.  I took
the following steps prior to attempting upgrade.
    1. Determined that Server meet the minmum requirements for upgrade.
    2. Installed all Windows Updates.
    3. Uninstalled McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise Application
    4. Backed Up and Imaged Primary Domain Controller.
    5. Tested Domain Replication to ensure Primary and Backup Domain Controllers were communicating with each other.
    6. Set Domain Function Level at Windows Server 2003
    7. Placed ADPREP folder on C:\ on Primary Domain Controller and ran "adprep /forestprep" and "adprep /domainprep" successfully
    8. In the C:\Windowd\System32 renamed the WindowsPowerShell application folder to WindowPowerShell-Old, the application failed the Upgrade compatibility test.
Loaded the DVD: "Windows Server 2008 for Enterprise, Standard and Datacenter 32bit Edition", ran installation in upgrade mode to preserve existing settings and software.  The Ugrade ran to last step, application install and failed at
26% complete with the following errror message:
"Windows installation encountered an error and cannot continue. Your computer will now restart and your previous version of windows will be restored"
My questions are why did the upgrade fail?  What can we do to ensure the upgrade will succeed next time?
I have incuded the Setuperr.log below.

    Hi,
Here are some limitation of upgrading:
Upgrading is supported from x86-based and x64-based computers, but cross-architecture upgrades are not supported.
    Cross-language upgrades are not supported.
Upgrading from Windows Server 2003 to a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 is not supported.
We cannot upgrade the failover clusters from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. Before upgrading, we must uninstall failover clustering.
For detailed information about Upgrading to Windows Server 2008, please refer to the link below,
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755199(v=WS.10).aspx#BKMK_Supported
Besides, to confirm that it isn't an IO issue, could you please try to copy the DVD to the local disk?
If error occurs, it may be an IO issue.
    Best Regards.
