Group Policy Request

Group Policy is very individualized. However, I have discovered the following tips that have helped me well over the years:Never, Never edit the Default Domain and Default Domain Controller policies - this provides a way to fall back to the defaults. If you deploy software via GPO, put any firewall rules needed for that software in the same policy. This allows you to close the firewall rules if you retire the software from your environment or move a PC to a different OU that doesn't use this software.Group Policy is OU based.Security Groups can cross OUs, making Group Policy and Security Groups orthogonal to each other. The two work together - use GPOs to set the base rules and Security Groups to provide access. Also, because it is OU based, do not put anything into the default Users and Computers containers. You cannot apply Group...

Hi Spiceheads,
I'm new in Group Policy but I need to setup our Group Policy in the domain can anyone with good heart provide me some standard group policy configuration or working group policy you have or group policy templates then I will check and explore the uses of it so I can setup our group policy correctly.
Sorry If a new like me ask this kind of request.

    GPOMG!
Group Policy driving you crazy? Here are some advanced troubleshooting tools (beyond RSOP, GPRESULT, etc.) that may be helpful. For first level troubleshooting, check out this link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787386(v=WS.10).aspx
    EVENT VIEWER (NEW & IMPROVED!)
Event viewer in Windows 7 has more detail about Group Policy. Start your event viewer (may need to run as an admin. account). Navigate to:
    Applications and Services Logs>Microsoft>Windows>GroupPolicy>Operational
Here you will find events that are related to Group Policy processing. You can determine how long it takes to run the various pieces of your particular GP as well as diagnostic information that can be very helpful when trying to figure out what is happening
    with GP.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749336(WS.10).aspx
Events 4016 and 5016 show the start and end of processing of groups of policies, including how long it took to apply each one in the end event.
Event 5312 shows policies that will be applied, and 5317 shows policies that are explicitly filtered out.
Events 8000 and 8001 respectively show the total processing time for computer boot and user boot GP processing, and 8006 and 8007 show the same for interim/periodic GP processing.
    GPLOGVIEW TOOL
A similar tool is called GPLOGVIEW. You must run this from the elevated command prompt. It will produce a XML, HTML, or simple text file of the GP events for export and review. You can even do a live monitor while you run GPUPDATE /force.

    GPSVR/GPSVC LOG FILE
If the normal tricks above don’t provide you with enough information, this should do it! There is a service called
GPSVR that gives you everything you ever wanted to know about Group Policy running on your workstation. Here is how to get more information from the GPSVR service in Windows 2008/Visa/Win 7.
Step 1: Enable logging in the Gpsvc.log file. To enable logging in the Gpsvc.log file, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK (might want to backup your registry first).
Make sure that you have the folder %windir%\debug\usermode, if the usermode folder is not there, then manually create it.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
Type Diagnostics, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the Diagnostics subkey, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type GPSvcDebugLevel, and then press ENTER.
Right-click GPSvcDebugLevel, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 30002 (as hex), and then click OK.
     Exit Registry Editor.
    Reboot machine.
At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: gpupdate /force
You will find the Gpsvc.log file in the following folder: %windir%\debug\usermode
Step 2: I use Notepad ++ to analyze this log file. It can help you troubleshoot, step, by step what GP is doing as your workstation/user is getting logged in. Timing, access/permission issues, SID information and more are all included
    in this log file.
Step 3: When you are done, change the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Diagnostics|GPSvcDebugLevel to 0x00000000 to disable the debug log or else it will continue to grow.

    Hi,
Were there other error codes logged in Event Viewer?
Regarding Event ID 1055, the following article can be referred to for troubleshooting.
Event ID 1055 — Group Policy Preprocessing (Security)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727272(v=ws.10).aspx
Based on the report you posted, this issue may be related to FRS replication service. As a result, we can use ntfrsutl tool to check whether the replication service is healthy.
Regarding this point, the following articles can be referred to for more information.
    Troubleshooting File Replication Service
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727056.aspx
    Ntfrsutl
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh875636.aspx
In addition, we can also try doing a non-authoritative Sysvol restore on Windows Server 2008 DC to see whether the issue persists.
Using the BurFlags registry key to reinitialize File Replication Service replica sets

  • The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file...

    Hello all-
I am currently trying to configure group policy (specifically folder redirects) from a new Windows Server 2008 in my home... the server acts as both an AD DS and file server for 4 client computers, all running Windows Vista Ultimate.
Here are the steps I am currently taking:
I create a new Group Policy called All Users and Computers and apply it to the All Users and Computers OU, which contains exactly what it says (all users and computers in the domain).
    I verify that a new folder was created in \\<FQDN>\sysvol\<FQDN>\Policies.  The new folder created is named {6479C8E0-3134-4B4F-B047-7ADD51684684}
I change the GPO Enforced setting to Enforced.
I attempt to use the gpupdate command to see if the group policy can be updated successfully.  In a command prompt, I type gpupdate <enter>.  I receive the message 'Updating Policy...' then after about 15 seconds the message 'User Policy update has completed successfully.'
I keep the cmd window open.  After about 10 seconds another message apperas which says "Computer policy could not be updated successfully.  The following errors were encountered: The processing of Group Policy failed.  Windows attempted to read the file \\<FQDN>\sysvol\<FQDN>\Policies\{6AC1786C-016F-11D2-945F-00C04Fb984F9}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful.  Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
    a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
    b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
    c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.
To diagnose the failure, review the event log or invoke gpmc.msc to access information about Group Policy results."
I confirm that the error code is #3 using the Event Log, "The system cannot find the file specificed"
Of course the system cannot find the file specified because the folder does not exist in the sysvol folder. I am wondering why Windows is trying to read from this location when it does not exist, and is not the new group policy I created!  I have no other group policies linked or enforced to any other OU/Domain/etc.  Any help resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all and thanks for the help.  First a few things:
I understand that the DC should not be running RRAS, but this a simple server being used in aa home environment by 4 users and getting another server just for RRAS would be overkill.
Secondly, I currently have it so that while the router is handling DHCP, I have reserved a fixed IP for the server, so it always has 192.168.1.100.  If I were to use the server as the DHCP, what would my hardware configuration have to look like?  I currently have the router plugged into the ISP modem, and then server plugged into the router.  All other clients connect to the router wirelessly.
Here's the dcdiag output.  I tried dcdiag /fix but to no avail.

  • Configuring group policy for user profiles in Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain

Requesting some experts advise on configuring group policy for user profiles.
We will be building new Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controllers (Domain of 400 users).
The settings which I am concerned:
    1. Folder Redirection: Desktop, Documents, Favorites.
    2. Quota for Folder Redirection - 1 GB per user.
    3. Map a networked drive - 1 GB per user.
    4. Roaming profile - (Will ignore if it does not suit our requirement).
The question is how outlook profile will be retained / automatically moved if the users move from once computer to other?
FYI, E-mails hosted on MS Office365 and OST file size of few users more than 25GB. So, in case the user moves from one computer to other, the entire mailbox will be downloaded via internet. This consumes high bandwidth if more than 3-4 users shift per day.
Thanks a lot for your valuable time and efforts.

    Hi,
    >>The question is how outlook profile will be retained / automatically moved if the users move from once computer to other?
This depends on where our outlook data files are stored. If these data files are stored under
drive:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local, then these files can’t be redirected, for folder redirection can’t redirect appdata local or locallow.
However, regarding your question, we can refer to the following thread to find the solution.
Roam outlook profiles without roaming profiles
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/3908b8e0-8f44-4a34-8eb5-5a024df3463e/roam-outlook-profiles-without-roaming-profiles
In addition, regarding how to configure folder redirection, the following article can be referred to for more information.

    Hope it helps.

    Hi,
Based on the description, the Sysvol is replicated by FRS service.
    >>some policies at the main DC are not updated like same policies in second DC.
In this case, we can do a non-authoritative restore on the main DC.
     To do so:
    Click Start, and then click
    Run.
    In the
Open box, type cmd and then press ENTER.
    In the
Command box, type net stop ntfrs.
    Click Start, and then click
    Run.
    In the
Open box, type regedit and then press ENTER.
Locate the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\Backup/Restore\Process at Startup
    In the right pane, double-click
    BurFlags.
    In the
Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type D2 and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then switch to the
    Command box.
    In the
Command box, type net start ntfrs.
    Quit the
    Command box.
Regarding reinitializing File Replication Service replica sets, the following article can be referred to for more information.

  • The Group Policy client-side extension Scripts failed ...

This is an error I've been seeing forever and it was always the impression that upgrading would resolve it, but it never has even in 10.3. 100% of our users get these errors in the Event Viewer:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Userenv
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1085
    Date: 10/21/2010
    Time: 8:04:52 AM
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: XXXXXX
    Description:
The Group Policy client-side extension Scripts failed to execute. Please look for any errors reported earlier by that extension.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
We also seem to have flakey policy issues where once in awhile a user will not be able to logon to Windows with Workstation Only while getting the " not allowed to logon interactively" message, other times the users report not being able to access the Windows Date and Time Properties and further sometimes they are unable to make system changes.
We have troubleshooted this and the only resolutions we've found are to run zac cc, zac ref, zac pl and sometimes it seems like deleting c:\windows\system32\grouppolicy will help.
In regards to the Event Viewer entry I posted, on any given machine I can issue the command gpupdate and it will put another entry into the Event Viewer (sometimes multiple ones). I've learned through research that if I "clean up" c:\windows\system32\grouppolicy\gpt.ini the errors go away, but once the policy is refreshed they come right back.

I'm not sure how to get Zenworks to use the cleaned up version nor and I too sure what those extra extensions are and how they got in there. I may need to contact Novell in regards to this, but since I'm already working on an SR with them I figured I'd go ahead and post here first.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the groups I'm using. NOTE: These have been in affect throughout the issues experienced. Users will work perfectly fine then suddenly the problem will start happening without any policy change on our side.
    -Member of-
    Network Configuration Operators+
    Remote Desktop Users+
    Users+
-Assigned Rights under a group I called "Other Rights"-
    Access this computer from network
    Change the system time
    Log on locally
    Shut down the system
The only condition I have is that these issues happen when logging in Workstation Only and I'm not able to recreate the problem on demand with tests.

When user's get this error, it generally means their account is not in a

If using "DLU", make sure the user accounts are a member of "Users".

  • How do I set firefox as the default browser in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Editor?

Hello, I am unable to set firefox as the default browser despite multiple different attempts to do so using group policy.
    I have:
    - Set a registry command (targeted at 32/64 via a WMI query) to reset the opening command as shown below:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -osint -url "%1"
    - Set a powershell logon script to run (that does run):
    firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
Despite setting the above it seems the client computers browsers are not affected by the settings above. When the script runs or if I run the command above a UAC window pops up and requests that I accept the command (for the setDefaultBrowser) but even if I click yes as an administrator it does nothing.
Since GPO in 2012 has changed perhaps there is something that I am missing? Do I need to somehow disable Windows Internet Explorer from achieving default browser status?
Please do not reply if you will suggest that I use Internet Explorer Maintenance (since this function in GPO has been disabled since IE10)
My DC is Server 2012, my client computers are Win7 32/64.

The above reply does not take into account that I am trying to use GROUP POLICY EDITOR to make it the default browser.

  • Intermittend DNS resolution, timeserver, group policy updates errors in client logs in Win 2012 R2 single server environement

We recently switched hardware and server software Win SBS 2008 to 2012R2 for a small network roughly 40 clients (Win7 Pro / Win 8.1 Pro) about 16 running concurrently at a given time and one network printer with the printer queue residing on the DC as well.
I read that a single server environment might not be ideal in particular no fail-over but that is an accepted risk in this particular network here.
    Errors:
Error 1043: Timeout during name resolution request
Error 1129: Group policy updates could not be processed due to DC not available
Error 5719: Could not establish secure connection to DC, DC not available
Occasionally but disappears after a while
Error 134: As a result of a DNS resolution timeout could not reach time server
    Symptoms
    On Win 7 Clients
Network shares added through Group Policy will not show sometimes
Network shares disconnect (red X) and when accessed return access authorization error after one or two clicks on the share finally grant access again
When the issue with accessing network shares occurs, it usually also affects Internet access meaning a 'server not responding' error appears in the browser windows when trying to open just any web page
nslookup during the incident returns cannot resolve error
ipconfig on client shows correct default router (VDSL Router) and DHCP / DNS Domain Controller
Also, the Win system log shows the above errors during these incidents, however, the nuimber of incidents vary from 20-30
    On Win 8.1 Clients
Same as above with the slight variation for network shares apparently due to Server 2012 and Win 8.1 clients managing drive shares differently. However, network share refresh does not work with this clients. In most cases only a gpupdate /force returns
drive shares but usually only for the active session. After logoff / logon the shares are gone again.
The issue does appear to be load related since it occurs even if there are only one or two workstations active.
    Server Configuration
    Dell R320 PowerEdge 16GB / 4TB 7200RPM RAID10 / GBitEthernet
    Zyxel 1910-48 Port Switch
    VDSL 50Mbps Down / 20Mbps Up
Since the DC is the only local DNS and there are no plans to add another one or move DNS to another server, the DNS server is configured with this own address as preferred DNS with three DNS forwarders 1) VDSL Router 2) ISP DNS1 3) ISP DNS2
Currently only one Network card is active for problem determination reasons.
There appears to be no consensus concerning IPV6 enabled or disabled, I tried both with no apparent effect
I have set all network cards server and client to Full Duplex and the same speed, also disabled Offload functions within the adapter settings. Some but no consistent improvements.
    Best Practice Analyzer Results
    DNS server scavening not enabled
Root hint server XYZ must respond to NS queries for the root zone
More than one forwarding server should be configured (although 3 are configured)
NIC1 should be configured to use both a preferred and alternate DNS (there is only one DNS in this network)
I have found some instructions to apply changes to the clients through a host file but I would rather like to understand whether this DNS response time issue can be resolved on the server for example timing setting perhaps. Currently the DNS forwarders are
    set to 3 second.
Since a few people have reported issues with DNS but most are working with multi DNS, DC environment I could not really apply any suggestions made there. perhaps there is anyone like me who is running a single server who has overcome or experience the same
issues. Any help would be appreciated

Hello Milos thx for your reply.. my comments below
    1. What does it "switched"? You may mean migration or new installation. We do not know...
    >> Switched is probably the incorrect term, replaced would be the appropriate wording. Before, there was a HP Proliant Server with SBS 2008 with distinct domain and now there is a Dell Server with MS 2012 R2 with a distinct domain. Client were
removed from one (SBS) domain and added to the new Server 2012 domain. Other components did not change for example same Network Switch or VDSL Router, Workstations and Printer
    2. Two DCs are better alternative. Or backup very frequently. There are two groups of administrators. Those who have lost DC and those who will experience this disaster in near future.
    >> Correct, and I am aware of that
    3. NIC settings in W 7 and W 8.1, namely DNS points to DC (...and NOTHING else. No public IP or that of router DNS.))
    >> Correct, this is how it's currently implemented. Clients point to DC for DHCP and DNS and Default Router, no public IP or DNS. The only references to ISP DNS exist on the VDSL Router itself as provided through ISP when establishing VDSL
Link and the list of Forwarders in the DNS Server configuration. However, I have just recently added the ISPs DNS as forwarders for test purposes and will probably learn tomorrow morning whether this had any effect for better or worse.
    4. Do nslookup to RR on clients. RR branch is saying client basic info on LDAP parameters of AD.
    >> Will post as soon as available
    5. I do not use forwarders and the system works
    >> Ok, does this mean it works for you in a similar or the same infrastructure setup or are you saying it is not required at all and I can remove any forwarder in a scenario like mine? If not required can you explain a bit more why it is not
required apart from that it does work for you that way?
    6. DHCP should sit on DC (DHCP on router is disabled)
    >> Correct, no other device is configured to provide DHCP service other than DC and DHCP is currently running on DC
    7. NIC settings in DC points to itself (loopback address 127.0.0.1)
    >> Are you sure this is still correct and does apply to Server 2012? I am reading articles stating that it should be the servers own IP but local loop or should this be added as alternate DNS in addition to the servers own IP?
    8. Use IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS whenever you change DNS settings.
    >> OK, that was not done every time I changed some settings but I can do that next week. Reboot alone would not suffice, correct?
    9. Test your system with dcdiag.
    >> See result below
    10. Share your findings.

  • Deploy Acrobat Reader 10.1.3 via MSI Group Policy

The purpose of this thread is to identify EASIEST way to create/obtain an MSI file of the LATEST VERSION of Acrobat Reader (currently 10.1.3 as of 7/19/2012) to be deployed via GPO.  I am not concerned with customizations of Reader settings as I have accomplished this already using Group Policy.
It sounds so easy, but I have found it to be quite frustrating and extremely time consuming to figure this out.
Here's what I have so far:
To download the full installer from Adobe, you must first apply on Adobe's website to distribute Reader:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/rdr_distribution1.html
Once you submit the request, a short time later you'll get an e-mail with a link to download the full exe file of reader 10.1.3.
Here's a link that explains how to extract an MSI from this exe:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/dmcmahon/2010/06/16/how-to-extract-an-msi-file-from-the-exe-
    for-adobe-reader/
Even with following those steps, I do not end up with an MSI file which will install 10.1.3.
    To try another route:
There is also an Adobe FTP site.  If you navigate down into the Reader 10.1.0 folder there is an MSI file.  Good - but it's the old version.
You would think that if you navigate into the 10.1.3 folder there would be an MSI there as well.
Unfortunately there is not.  However, there is an MSP file found in the misc folder:
I have tried several methods that are supposed to combine the MSP file with the MSI file - they have not worked.
I have also tried several methods of modifying MSI files, and using the Adobe Cusomization wizard downloadable here:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4950
I am unable to end up with a deployable MSI file for Reader 10.1.3.
It's amazing that it's so complicated to deploy the latest version of Adobe Reader to my users.
Does anyone have a comprehensive answer to this simple problem?  I do not want a link to a document with 20 pages explaining the theory of MSP files.  I am looking for a concise, step by step method to obtain an MSI for 10.1.3 quickly and easily.
    Thanks!

First there isn't a single MSI file that will install Adobe Reader 10.1.3 available. There are two ways in which you can create an installer package that will install Adobe Reader 10.1.3.
    1.  Bootstrapper
    -  Bootstrapper uses the Setup.ini file to create a chained installation process and is run from Setup.exe with a limited amount of installation switches available.
The process is documented in the Enterprise Administration Guide:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf #page=77
Here is a reference video on the process:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zYTUyOIcNk
    2.  AIP (Administrative Installation Point)
    - AIP uses the Windows Installer to create a decompressed updated full MSI based installer.  The process is documented in the Enterprise Administration Guide:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf #page=70
Here is a reference video on the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05XOKX0150w&feature=relmfu
    * Please note, that each installation method has it's advantages and disadvantages. Those aspects of each installation type need to be seriously considered for your specific environment and what will and will not work for the IT group and user groups within your enterprise before you decide upon one of them.

  • Is there a group policy to force all workstations in an OU to logoff?

    Hello,
Is there a group policy to force all workstations in an OU to logoff?
    Thanks in advance.

I have not seen a policy related to log off users of specific OU's, but why not to give this a try:
    import-module activedirectory
    $Computers=Get-ADComputer -Filter * -SearchBase "ou=hadock,dc=hadock,dc=net"
    foreach($PC in $Computers)
    (Get-WmiObject win32_operatingsystem -ComputerName $PC.name).win32shutdown(4)
Above script uses WMI to send force logoff requests to clients in Hadock OU.
    Hope it helps.

  • Servers take an endless time at applying group policy settings

We have some Windows 2008R2 RDS servers that have been given a syspreped image. After a few day in production, and several nightly reboots, the servers start to hang at applying group policy setting. I have created a gpsvc.log file. What can be wrong with
    these servers?
When i reboot the server without network connection, the reboot time is fine. The user login still takes forever.

  • Deploying computer certificate to the Personal Computer Store using Group Policy

Hi, can someone please confirm if the only way to deploy a computer cert to the Personal store under the Computer branch (Not User branch) is to use an auto-enrollment template & corresponding GPO?
I can see that in group policy you can deploy other types of certs such as intermediate & Root certs etc without using Auto-enrolment, but no option under the Public Key Policies section to deploy a cert to the personal store within
    the Computer branch.
    Thanks

    > Hi, can someone please confirm if the only way to deploy a computer cert

No, you can request a computer cert manually, too. But you cannot deploy
personal certs through GPO because in GPO, the private key cannot be
stored... This is true for both computer and user certs, because from a
CA's perspective, both are simply an entity :)

  • Strange DNS, Group Policy & Active Directory Issues - Can't track down root issue!

For the last few weeks, we've been getting complaints, from our developers, about not being able to authenticate on various systems.  The issues were hit & miss but still problematic enough to warrant our looking into it.  It seems to be getting
worse...  I now have new servers that aren't getting group policy updates.  They may get some, like the list of local admins but won't pick up NTFS permissions for folder-access.  Those that pick up the AD group full of local admins have trouble
authenticating members of the group.  Some were showing event log entries regarding authentication issues due to being unable to contact an AD DC.  We reloaded that DC but many of the issues still persist.  At this point, I'm running
out of places to look for ideas.  I've spent the last week looking up Event Log IDs and looking though their meanings and possible remedies but, again, the issues persist.  It doesn't seem to matter what the OS is.  We've been seeing
    this on 2008, 2008-R2 & 2012-R2.
Here are some examples of events I'm seeing.  I can't figure out the root cause(s).

Note that these servers are sitting in OUs that are full of other servers that don't have these issues.  These GPOs have been in place for years.  I suspect there's a deeper issue with AD, GP or a combination thereof.  The group policy issues
seem to only affect freshly loaded servers...

    Hello,
assure that no firewall is blocking connection for AD required ports as listed in
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772723(WS.10).aspx
You have error about not connect setup from AD sites and services with the used subnets in your network and linking them to the correct site, please check this in AD sites and services and also have the DCs placed correct to the site they belong to.
"During the past 4.20 hours there have been 83 connections to this Domain Controller from client machines whose IP addresses don't map to any of the existing sites in the enterprise. Those clients, therefore, have undefined sites and may connect to
any Domain Controller including those that are in far distant locations from the clients. A client's site is determined by the mapping of its subnet to one of the existing sites. To move the above clients to one of the sites, please consider creating subnet
object(s) covering the above IP addresses with mapping to one of the existing sites.  The names and IP addresses of the clients in question have been logged on this computer in the following log file '%SystemRoot%\debug\netlogon.log' and, potentially,
in the log file '%SystemRoot%\debug\netlogon.bak' created if the former log becomes full. The log(s) may contain additional unrelated debugging information. To filter out the needed information, please search for lines which contain text 'NO_CLIENT_SITE:'.
    The first word after this string is the client name and the second word is the client IP address. The maximum size of the log(s) is controlled by the following registry DWORD value 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters\LogFileMaxSize';
the default is 20000000 bytes.  The current maximum size is 20000000 bytes.  To set a different maximum size, create the above registry value and set the desired maximum size in bytes."

  • Event 4098 Group Policy Printers, Printers intermittently don't deploy

     Hi,
On a similar vein to this topic We also deploy printers Via the Server 2008 group policy preferences. All our PC's are Vista Business 32bit SP1. The problem we are having is that intermittently the printer will not install at logon. If you logoff and back on again it is there. On one particular PC I found this event in the Applications log.
    Log Name:      Application
    Source:        Group Policy Printers
    Date:          13/01/2009 4:07:48 PM
    Event ID:      4098
    Task Category: (2)
    Level:         Warning
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          SYSTEM
    Computer:      E-HSS.cygnet.library.uwa.edu.au
    Description:
The user 'HSSClient1' preference item in the 'Client Vista Domain Policy SP1 {A85CA6F0-874B-467F-B50A-939E64932884}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070709 The printer name is invalid.' This error was suppressed.
    Event Xml:
      <System>
        <Provider Name="Group Policy Printers" />
        <EventID Qualifiers="34305">4098</EventID>

Now if this error happened every time we would change the name of the printer to be something more "Valid" but it doesn't and we can logon again and the printer installs fine. Can someone explain to me why it thinks HSSClient1 is invalid intermittently?
From this thread I investigated the print processor of one of our printer queues and found is was not set to 'WinPrint' So on HSSClient1 I set the print processor to 'WinPrint'.  Do all printers managed/deployed by Group Policy preferences need to have their processor set to WinPrint?

    Hi,
Regarding print processors , third party print processors are supported but not recommended. Print processors are user-mode dynamic-link libraries that are responsible for converting the spooled data of a print job to a format that can be sent to a print monitor. Print processors are also responsible for handling program requests to pause, to resume, and to cancel print jobs. But Print processors would be started during system startup. It’s not related to this GPO issue.
This issue may occur if you create the Printer as TCP/IP printer. Please try to delete the original printer and try to create a new shared Printer in Group Policy Preferences.
However, if it’s the original printer is not TCP/IP printer, please also try to recreate it and help to run the MPS report (PFE version) on the clients to collect reports. The MPS Reporting Tool is utilized to gather detailed information regarding a systems current configuration. The data collected will assist you with fault isolation.
A . Please download MPS Reporting Tool (MPSRPT_PFE.EXE) from the following link:
Please note: The link may be truncated when you read the E-mail. Be sure to include all text between '(' and ')' when navigating to the download location.
B . Right click MPSRPT_PFE.EXE and select Run as Administrator to run this tool, and you will see a Command Window start up.
    C . Please type Y with the message of <Include the MSINFO32 report? (defaults to Y in 15 seconds)[Y,N]?
D . When the tool is done you will see an Explorer Window opening up the %systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab folder and containing a <Computername>MPSReports.cab file. After collecting, please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address.
    Thanks.
