GRUB doesn't load from SSD

Hey,
I wanted to replace my HDD with an SSD. This is what I did:
1. boot into live disk, create partitions on my SSD: #1: /, btrfs, boot flag, #2: /, btrfs on LUKS [edit: I used fdisk, bad idea?]
2. mounted both partitions with compress=lzo, copied backup to the new disk.
3. chrooted into #1 (with proc, sys, /dev mounted properly)
4. installed grub2 (grub-install /dev/sdb)
5. changed /etc/default/grub and removed HDD-specific flags (I had a swapfile on my old drive)
5. created grub config (grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg)
6. changed /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab accordingly.
Then I wanted to reboot, but my laptop wouldn't turn off and the LED for disk activity was flashing all the time...
Eventually (after ~20min) I pressed the power button and it simply turned off.
Now, when I boot, BIOS takes about 15 s to load (before ~2s) while disk activity is high again (I have no idea what it is doing). If I try to boot from the SSD, the BIOS screen doesn't go away at all, if I leave the live system stick plugged in, I can boot into the live system.
Two other things, which puzzled me:
1. The SSD sometimes shows up correctly as "Samsung 840 Base" in BIOS, but sometimes the name is completely scrambled.
2. If I check the MBR, I can see GRUB2 on it. If I reboot a couple times, the MBR eventually gets erased (0xFFFFF.. written on it). I have NO clue why.
Also, if I boot the live system, sometimes I get a lot of errors (something about ata1, the ssd).
I also read about troubles with Samsung laptops (I got the Samsung 300V3A-S02DE) and SSDs, causing the laptop not to boot at all anymore, but that isn't my problem.
I activated AHCI, might that cause the problem? (I don't even know what the difference is).
One more thing: Is compression on /boot even possible? I read somewhere that it can only boot from uncompressed /boot, but since grub isn't even loading, I don't think this is the issue either.
The basic question is: Is the disk simply broken or is this a misconfiguration?
Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the hint! I checked the SMART values and got an UDMA CRC Error Count of 432. Apparently, this is a sign of cable issues so I put in my old drive and checked again, it has an UDMA CRC Error Count of 0. I'm not sure if this means the SSD is broken or not.
I also tested the speed of my old drive with hdparm:
cached reads: ~3000MB/s
buffered disk reads: ~83MB/s
This is seems normal to me, so I guess the cable works properly after all.
Also, the Ubuntu Disks utility couldn't find any partitions on the SSD, which is odd. I was able to mount them, read from them and write to them using an Arch Linux Live disk. Why can't Gnome Disks find the partitions?

  • Doesn't load from source system to PSA and DSO

    Hi Gurus,
We have launched a Delta load from Source System (POSDM) to DSO. In the source system there are 5000000 rows but none was loaded into DSO or PSA. The delta load was ok, but any data was loaded.
If the delta  load was lunch again, would be loaded those 5000000 rows. Or those 5000000 rows wouldn't be able to load again.
Any idea abut this issue? Any feedback will be really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
Are you sure this 5 million records are delta records and should be pulled into BW as delta??
did you count the number of records in the underlying tables??
which data source you are using??
Delta loads are suppose to bring the new records or changed records since the last data load and not all the records.
Since the request is green as you said and still it shows 0 records then it is possible that nothing has changed since last delta.try to see the details of the data load... if it failed...may be thats the reason you are not able to see any records.
If you schedule the delta again it will bring the records changed or created after last delta.
If the delta was unsuccessfull then turn the QM status and overall status of request to red manually in the monitor of the request and delete it from PSA and all the targets in which its loaded and schedule the delta again and it should bring the delta.
    Thanks

I have created a recovery image in windows 8 to my 16G USB flash and disabled intel rapid storage.
I put the new 512G Crucial MX100 SSD into the machine, and use USB flash drive to reset the laptop.
After the reset process was finished, I took out the USB flash drive, but the laptop will not load windows from my SSD, and the laptop did detect my SSD.
I am wondering if I did something wrong? I took out the SSD and put it in to my desktop, and I did see files were written into the SSD, but W540 will not load it,

The reason for your machine not booting might be found here:

It does not give any info if the Recovery Media actually formats the drive in GPT mode, which is required for UEFI boot, in which case you might have to re-format your new SSD and re-install it with your recovery USB, which you're probably required to boot in UEFI mode as well. I have only installed Windows 8 in UEFI mode with an original retail DVD, and to achieve that I had to boot the DVD in UEFI mode.

  • Grub doesn't load, goes straight to Vista

I am not new to Arch but have never dual-booted Windows and Linux before. I shrunk Vista to 30 GB (not without hassle, mind you, and many many defrags) and set up Arch on other partitions. This (according to cfdisk) is my current setup:
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    Unusable 1.05*
    sda1 Boot Primary Unknown (27) 6594.50*
    sda2 Primary NTFS [^C] 31471.95*
    sda3 Primary Linux ext3 101442.38*
    sda5 Logical Linux swap / Solaris 2048.10*
    Logical Free Space 18481.31*
I don't know exactly what /dev/sda1 IS, but I think it's something Windows is using. And I don't know why I have 1.5 MB of free space at the start of the drive... I just ignored it. Regardless, I installed Grub onto /dev/sda3. Rebooting takes me straight to Vista with no Grub at all. That's why I thought I had erred. If so, where should I install Grub, and how can I erase it from the MBR of /dev/sda3 properly?
    >.< Darn dual-booting.

Wow that ftp install CD chroot was sure buggy for me. First df didn't work, then everything became read-only, and then it wouldn't let me unmount my hard drive, even though I made sure I wasn't using it. @_@ Regardless, grub seems to have installed correctly. It lets me go into both Arch and Vista without problem. Then, is there an easy way to erase the grub I'm presuming I also accidentally installed on /dev/sda3? XD
(Sorry for the stupid question, I've honestly never dual-booted before. My PC downstairs is pure Gentoo and nothing else).

  • Firefox doesn't load from the quick launch

sometimes when i click the quick launch icon on my task bar Firefox does not load right. All i get is a blank white screen and it happens more than just a few times. I have to reload the page after i close it out. Also i keep getting issues when I click the quick launch icon that it says oops we need to restore your last session. And it was closed out properly. Especially first thing in the morning after I start up my computer. Is there anything that can be done with these issues.

    Hello,
I am using Firefox 26.0 on Windows 7, 64-bit without any issues and want to help resolve this issue for you. To narrow down the root cause of the problem, can you please try opening Firefox in safe mode and then see if the sluggishness after repeated usage is being observed. Try opening Firefox in safe-mode each time, so that we can narrow to the root cause

  • [Solved] Grub errors 18 and 22 when booting from SSD

    Hello community,
recently I purchased an SSD drive and am now having trouble doing an Arch install on it. Before that a 2TB HDD was in use. After building in the SSD I partitioned it (msdos partition table) creating partitions for swap, / and /home. Then I copied the files from the old /home partition on the freshly created one and installed Arch on the new / partition. Here's the partition setup:
    $ LANG=C sudo fdisk -l
    Disk /dev/sda: 2000.4 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders, total 3907029168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x0003a234
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 2048 3907028991 1953513472 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 16065 4192964 2088450 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda6 4196352 65720319 30761984 83 Linux # old /
    /dev/sda7 65722368 577720319 255998976 83 Linux # old /home
    /dev/sda8 577722368 3907028991 1664653312 83 Linux
    Disk /dev/sdb: 128.0 GB, 128035676160 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15566 cylinders, total 250069680 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x000a9841
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 51863552 241582079 94859264 83 Linux # new /home
    /dev/sdb2 241582080 250068991 4243456 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sdb3 2048 51863551 25930752 83 Linux # new /
Partition table entries are not in disk order
The problem is: booting from the SSD fails as follows: On the first try to select some Grub entry I get an error 22 "No such partition.". On any further try I get error 18 "Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by bios".
What works is  to boot up the new system from the Grub residing on the HDD. So the problem is just the new Grub install in the SSD's MBR. Also it's not a thing of Grub's configuration, since copying the working menu.lst from the HDD install and reinstalling grub via grub-install /dev/sdb gives the correct Grub entries but selecting them results in the same errors.
So currently I'm booting from the HDD and selecting the boot entry for the freshly installed SSD system there, which works fine. But of course I'd like the SSD to be able to boot without "help" on the part of the HDD.
I tried to activate AHCI in the Bios but it didn't make any difference. The SSD is a Crucial M4 128GB.
    Thanks for any hints,
    PhotonX

    I created a /boot partition now:
    $ LANG=C sudo fdisk -l
    Disk /dev/sdb: 128.0 GB, 128035676160 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15566 cylinders, total 250069680 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x000a9841
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 51863552 241582079 94859264 83 Linux # /home
    /dev/sdb2 241582080 249831423 4124672 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sdb3 2048 51863551 25930752 83 Linux # /
    /dev/sdb4 * 249831424 250068991 118784 83 Linux # /boot
Partition table entries are not in disk order
    Disk /dev/sda: 2000.4 GB, 2000398934016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders, total 3907029168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

    /dev/sda8 577722368 3907028991 1664653312 83 Linux
Then installed Grub on this partition: "grub-install /dev/sdb4". Then placed the SSD on the first position in the Bios, booted but got the same errors in Grub. So it doesn't matter where exactly Grub is installed, if it's somewhere on the SSD, it fails...
edit: Concerning using UUIDs: I couldn't find any howto regarding Grub (legacy) configuration with UUID's. Could you point me to some example config?
edit2: I now put the SSD on the first place in the boot list and started PartedMagic. But fdisk still recognizes the SSD as sdb and the HDD as sda. I think, the sdX identifier can be changed only by plugging the SSD in the first SATA port and the HDD in the second (while now it is the other way around).
edit3: I tried to install Grub from the HDD installation on the SSD (executed "grub-install /dev/sdb4" from the HDD system) and found out that, though I created a /boot partition on the SSD, the Grub files installed directly on /dev/sdb are used. So I tried to install Grub from the HDD system onto /dev/sdb (executed "grub-install /dev/sdb" from the HDD system) and got error 22 even before Grub's boot list was shown. But maybe it's really a bad idea to install Grub on another drive than the system it belongs to is located.

  • Trying to run from logical partition - GRUB doesn't detect it

Hi all, I only have a single SSD in my laptop with the following setup (in order on disk):
    sda1 - System Reserved
    sda2 - Windows 8
    sda4 - Extended Partition
sda5 - Arch 2 (this is where I'm trying to move my Arch install to)
sda3 - Arch (this is the one I can actually boot into
    (unallocated space)
This is what I want things to look like eventually:
    sda1 - System Reserved
    sda2 - Windows 8
    sda3 - Extended Partition
        sda4 - Arch
        sda5 - some other distro
sda6 - storage (I want this accessible by all OSes)
Here's how I think I'm going to do this:
    - move Arch installation from after the extended partition to before it (since the extended partition is a big chunk of mostly free space, and I would like it to go last.
    - after verifying that I can boot the Arch installation from the logical partition, delete the Arch installation on the primary partition and absorb the free space into the extended partition
    Here's what I've done:
    - used 'dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/dev/sda5 bs=4096 conv=notrunc, noerror' to clone my working Arch installation to the logical partition (sda5).
    - ran 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' to update GRUB and add the logical partition to the list of things to choose from in the Grub menu.
After running 'grub-mkconfig' nothing new was added to the menu.
    Questions:
    - Is what I want to do even possible?
         - can I have the logical partition marked for storage be accessible to Windows 8?
    - Is there an easier way to do what I want to do?
    - How do I get GRUB to detect the logical partition?
         - Is it possible to boot into a logical partition?

grub doesn't always automatically pick up arch installations. Is os-prober installed? You can always add the entry manually e.g. in 40_custom or whatever. Don't forget to adjust fstab.
Just to be clear: you have an MBR formatted disk and are talking about traditional logical partitions, right? Not lvm?

“Try Safe boot and then restart with only Aperture open.  Still doent work write back with more details like Ram, HD capacity/free space.  Are these thumbnails or Previews? Have you turned off building previews in AP preferances?
    Safe boot   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
1  It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
2  It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
3  In Mac OS X v10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
4  It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
5  It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
6  It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X v10.4 or later).
7  Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.”
As I don’t know much about the technical aspects of computers, I don’t really understand the first answer, and it sounds like following it might produce unwanted changes.
    But I understand your questions, so I’ll try to answer them;
"loading from any Project" means that I encounter the problem when I’m using a project, possibly after/because I’ve left the Mac on overnight, and/or  I’ve made a lot of adjustments, and, once the problem is there, it happens in any other project which I open – the images load then disappear.
I can see images in the Browser, so it only happens in the Viewer(s).
I’m afraid I don’t understand what you mean by: “If you select "Photos" from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector, does it show you all of your Images?”. I am a newcomer to Aperture, so I don’t know what some of the buttons are for yet, but when I want to look at and adjust my pictures, I import them, as referenced images, then Aperture creates a folder/project in the Library. When I click on that Project (when it’s working properly), all the images appear in the Browser or the Viewers  – without me needing to “select Photos from near the top of the Library tab of the Inspector”. I selected it and looked at all the items in the dropdown menu, but none of them seems to offer the option to ‘show all the images’. So I’m not sure how to answer your question except to say that – yes, I can see all the pictures in the Browser or the Viewers (when it’s working properly), but I don’t seem to need to use the Photos button to achieve this.
    Did Aperture work before?
Yes it worked ok for a while, but I only purchased it on 24th May.
If I understand correctly, the difference between thumbnail and preview is that the thumbnail is what I see when the “Loading” wheel is turning, and the disappearance of this wheel after a few seconds means that I am now looking at the preview (also, the thumbnail cannot be adjusted).
So I think the problem occurs when the thumbnail has finished loading; the viewer going blank/grey might mean that it is not showing the preview.
But I have not changed the default Preview settings in Aperture Preferences.
    My macbookpro details:
    2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 Gb 1333 MHz DDR3
    Hard Drive capacity 499.25 GB
    Available 387.36 GB
I have noticed another problem: I cannot apply the same rating to multiple images: following the instructions, I select a group of contiguous (or non- contiguous) images, choose a selection eg “5stars” using the keyboard, but the stars only appear in the last selected image – even though all the images are still showing as selected.”
I hope this helps you to understand more.
Thank you for trying to help me.
    Tony
