GRUB2 Headaches
Hey Peeps,
So I was playing around earlier today with a GPT/LVM/GRUB2 install. I've read up on it a bunch, as well as the Arch GRUB2 & LVM wiki's and a video on YouTube. Things seem to go well up until the part of doing grub-mkconfig... it doesn't work.
The video tutorial I watched showed it finding the linux and initrd images, but mine doesn't. So needless to say, if I reboot it crashed. I've gotten it to load GRUB2 and start-up if I just delete the entire grub.cfg file and make my own basic one, but this seems much different than other people's experience.
Why is grub-mkconfig not working right? It creates a config file, but saves it as grub.cfg.new instead of grub.cfg. It also doesn't use the contents of /etc/grub.d/custom_40 like the video tutorial shows either.
Thanks for any help!
Here's the video tutorial I was following.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69X9ZYA41xU
You're right... crash isn't the right word. I believe, from memory, the error was something about fd0.
I know I can copy the grub.cfg.new to grub.cfg, just find it odd that none of the other tutorials or installs I've read about discuss doing this.
Here's a transcript of the video taken from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=133170

Software update, nothing but headaches.....
About two weeks ago, I woke up to a message on my phone that said a software update had been downloaded and the phone needed to restart to install. I wish I'd known then what a headache this was going to cause me.
A few days later I noticed that my phone wasn't ringing, my notification sounds weren't playing, and my alarm was going off on the screen but no sound. I always use my phone as my alarm clock, but can't trust it now. I turned my phone off and back on and the problem resolved. It has done it 5 or 6 more times since then. I'm on call for my job every three weeks, and I couldn't trust that my phone was going to ring this past week. Very frustrating.
I've also had an increase in problems making calls and typing text messages. When I try to make a call it acts like it is connecting but I don't hear the phone ring or anything. My husband said it is connecting, and he can hear me, but I can't hear anything. When typing text messages, it will freeze up and I have to exit the message and go back in before it will let me type.
I'm loathe to do a factory reset because of the amount of time it takes to get the phone back to the way I like it. Is this going to be my only option? When I first got my Droid 2, it was replaced twice in the first three months because I had nothing but problems. The 2nd time was a refurbished Droid 2 Global and it has been an OK phone. I've spent so much time dealing with technical issues though that I'm about ready to send Verizon a bill for my time.
I'm not able to upgrade until August, but I can assure you I will never buy another Motorola phone.
Is anyone else having the same problems since the update? Any solutions to the problems I'm having?Have you tried booting in Safe Mode and see if the device works as needed? Try follow these steps and if this doesnt help then I would say its time to try a hared reset because issues do have a habit of showing its evil head after a update because of the update process changes and updates files but doesnt delete any personal settings and the old settings sometimes cause issues..
Try booting in Safe Mode and then consider a Hard Rest.
Enable Safe Mode
Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.
Slide the keyboard open.
Press the Power button.
Press and hold the OK key.
Continue to hold the OK key until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen.
This may take up to 30 seconds.
While in Safe Mode, remove the most recently installed applications.
Power cycle the device then attempt to use the device.
If the device works properly, install applications one at a time to identify the application causing the problem. -
New iPod Touch, Can't get iTunes to work, extra headaches
Hello,
This is my first day in the Apple world: I caved and thought it would be good to get a new mp3/video player after my last one died. I ended up getting a 4th Gen Black iPod Touch - not sure if the color matters, but why not?
Anyway, my second problem (first being the weird packaging, of tape through plastic then stuck on) started with iTunes: the thing just would NOT download. Every time I tried, the website kept saying "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to completecould not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." That's just great: I can't get any music or video ONTO my iTouch without iTunes...right?
After browsing around I found an older version of iTunes that seemed to work. Yay! But not really. Nobody ever mentioned that .flac and .avi files can't be imported into iTunes at all...so I had to go hunting online for third party converters. This took care of THAT problem...
However, now that conversion is up, the older version of iTunes won't pick up my iPod Touch and Sync it. There is actually a "Sync iPod" button under "File" tab, but it's grayed out and I can't use it.
Not entirely sure if this is why, but according to a few people, when a new iTunes comes out, the older one stops functioning as fully as it originally did, forcing people to upgrade their iTunes in order to make it work like normal.
I tried to find a third party program to pick up my iPod Touch so I could upload files, but no luck. I feel like an idiot for not knowing how to turn source code into a program, and the binary installers I did find were user-hostile (ie. Right clicking to bring up a menu actually plays the movie and there's no stop button, you have to end task from the task manager). Windows Explorer only shows one folder in my iPod Touch, which is empty and four letters long, which gives no clue as to what it is.
So here's my big question: now that I finally am fully ready to upload my files to my iPod Touch, I can't. Why?
Is it my version of iTunes? Why can't I download iTunes' newest version? Why does updating from the older version yield the same result (though I'm sure both installers are the same)? Is there another way to get all my media onto my device?
Thanks in advance...talk about a four hour headache...I've used the Reset Network Settings feature in my iPod Touch after every failed attempt to connect to my wireless network. I've also reset the wireless access point and router after making changes to them.
It appears that my Touch is finding the wireless network, accepting the security password/key, and connecting to the wireless access point and router (I get a full signal on the strength indicator). However, the Touch appears to be acquiring the IP Address automatically, right? Thus, it gets the IP Address starting with "169". If I can manually set up the TCP/IP settings, I believe I can get it to connect. Is there a way to set up the TCP/IP settings manually? -
my safari lion does not open and keeps quiting unexpected. Haven`t been able to use it for weeks now. I have disabled other applicancies like printers but it still does not open. Any body with an ideal of what to end this headache?

Grub2 with two screens only shows up on one
I have recently installed Arch, and kudos, everything works almost perfect out of the box so to say. I had few hickups with some hardware, but everything resolved just fine in less than few hours thanks to magic of Google and Arch Wiki. As you probably guess I am quite new to Arch, but I am kind-a noob in disguise since I have beem Redhat user since around version 5.1 of their "Fedora" predecessor. Anyway I still consider myself a newbie since I have always been more of a user less of sysadmin/tweaker. I am a programmer and don't really care much about os internals as long as everything *just works*.
Now I have installed Arch on a laptop with external screen attached to it and have troubles with GRUBs boot screen not showing up on 2nd monitor. Boot menu only shows up on a built-in laptop screen, not on external one, There are no problems with my monitors, everything works as intended once system boots to X, however I can't get GRUB to show up on both screens. As my setup considered, I use this laptop as a dekstop replacement, so it sits on a shelf below my desk and since I don't see laptop screen at all, you understand, it is quite of inconvenience :-).. I have external monitor, keyboard and a mouse attached to it to VGA and usb ports so it really don't feels as laptop at all. I have managed to confiugre window managers to turn off laptop screen after login (shame to waste power and burn pixels if I can't see them), but I can't manage to get GRUB to show up on external monitor. Of course I have Arch as default so it boots into Arch anyway, and Windows is just below so I can blindly switch to windows by just pressing one arrow key, but I still have to look below the desk just to pick the right timing to press the arrow key for those rare occasions when I have to boot into windows :-). And most notably: I never had this problem with GRUB before and yes I had Fedora installed on this system as well.
I am using grub in text mode, I don't care for fancy splashes at boot time and so on.
I have googled quite a bit and seen that other people also have this issue, but I haven't seen any good answer yet. On one forum there is an answer that GRUB can't see the 2nd screen at boot time since it speaks only to BIOS (or uefi better to say), but I don't think its true. I am using my 2nd screen without problems in uefi bios mode, and windows boot mngr shows just fine on both screens, so it must be some setting for GRUB that I can't find.
I hope I am asking question in proper section, if not feel free to move it around.
Thanks in advance fo help and hope you don't mind my noob question.
PS:
Of course easiest way woud be to just format c:\ to ext4 and not need to boot into Windows at all, but alas, I do make money on guess what: programming VBA and automating databases with Access and Excel - I can tell you, vba programmers seem to be an extinct art so there is money to be made :-).@The Saint - yeah, I realized after I posted that this was wrong thread. I am new to Arch wiki and was too fast to post. I came to forum with intend to ask this question, looked quickly through sections, saw "hardware" and posted just to realize afterwards it is ment hardware in context of kernel. This should probably be moved to some other section of the forum. I am sorry for inconvenience.
@Glow - I see uefi bios on my 2nd screen, no problems here. When I run live dvd I also see it on 2nd screen, but I think the dvd is using Syslinux instead of Grub. I have not tried another boot loader with Arch and Windows. Would like to use Grub2 actually just because I am familiar with it and it boots fine both linux and windows. So I would in first hand like to fix issue with Grub if possible, but if not I will have to look into some other boot loader.

Care to play with grub2-graphical?
UPDATES:
November 2, 2009:
1) Added a section to troubleshooting for flickering graphical menus
October 28, 2009:
1) Added a section to troubleshooting for failing to parse the block device
2) Fixed a few outdated pieces and typos
October 10, 2009:
1) Added grub2-icons-circlestarts to AUR, a nice set of many different OS icons
* It will be in the binary repos when I get the chance (and if I don't forget!)
July 5, 2009:
1) Troubleshooting section for an error reading /dev/fd0 nag and a small tip on the install section
OVERVIEW:
I've been working on (and succeeded in) getting Colin Bennett's code http://grub.gibibit.com/ to run in Arch. I hadn't seen it elsewhere, even from the major distros (except ubuntu's launchpad https://code.launchpad.net/~colinb/grub/gfxmenu ). I've only seen legacy grub wallpaper mods (grub-gfxboot) and animation patches (grub-gfxmenu, which the ubuntu2 theme and my hack theme mimic btw), not THIS grub2 mod. So, I figured I might as well try to get it working. The good news is, it appears to be slowly merging into the official grub2.
Non-Arch distros: All of this can be done on a non-Arch distro in a similar way. Instead of using the given makepkg commands, you would need to manually handle dependencies listed in my PKGBUILD files (the right Ruby stuff is especially important; it will compile without ruby, but not correctly) and then use the typical "./configure; make; sudo make install" (or your distro's standard packaging method if you want to do that) on the source tarballs listed in the PKGBUILD source=() lines. If you have no idea what any of that jargon means, you should ask on your OS's forums and I'm sure someone will assist you. Non-Arch distros can also grab the theme tarballs from http://hateanthem.dreamhosters.com/arch/build/ and either extract them to /boot/grub/themes/ or package them for your OS if you can (I'm sure others will appreciate it). If you do so, you are welcome to send them to me if you wish and I can put them up on the same server as all of these files. For those of you on Ubuntu, to answer your question: no, Ubuntu's grub2 does not have gfxmenu capabilities yet. Either wait for it to be merged into grub2 or ask someone to package this for you (be sure to mention when you are asking however that grub2-gfxmenu is not the same as just grub, grub2, grub-gfx, grub-gfxboot, or grub-gfxmenu, as there is understandable confusion to the difference). As for troubleshooting, most of the troubleshooting here will also work on other distributions except for pacman commands, which you would need to deal with yourself accordingly (fyi, pacman -U installs a local Arch package; you would sudo make install or dpkg -i somePackage or rpm -i somePackage or whatever in your case).
Below are the author's default themes (awesome!) and the quick Arch "concept theme" I made (crappy, but works; hence "concept"):
[EDIT: I removed these screenshots from photobucket.. just see the author's page screenshots for a good idea]
http://grub.gibibit.com/Themes
INTRO NOTES:
A [Assumptions]: This how-to assumes that you already know/have:
1) Your hard drive device names/numbers (ie /dev/sdXY) for your /boot and / partition(s)
* See /etc/fstab or the mount command and your grub.cfg/menu.lst
2) GENERAL Arch Linux experience/knowledge for:
* PKGBUILDS: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ABS … he_ABS_way
* PACMAN: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman
* AUR: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR
* YAOURT: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Yaourt
* GRUB: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB
* GRUB2: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2
* See your /boot/grub/grub.cfg or /boot/grub/menu.lst
B [Miscellaneous]: Things you should know before starting:
1) There are TWO pkgbuilds/packages needed: grub2-gfxmenu-overlay and grub2-gfxmenu
* The former is mandatory themes, icons, etc. The latter is the grub2 patched with gfxmenu stuff
2) Grub2's numbering/ordering is different than legacy grub's and, sometimes, your system's
* Hard drives still start at 0, but partitions start from 1
* For some, "/dev/sdb" is "hd0" in grub, counter-intuitively
3) Only try this if you have time/patience/experience/knowledge to fix it
* However, this is NOT as hard/long/tedious as it looks; I'm very thorough
* Oh, and for whatever reason, this loads/works PAINFULLY slowly in VirtualBox
* Don't bother outside of practice..
4) VERY IMPORTANT: Old posts here use an outdated menuentry format!
* It can crash grub2
* NEW, CORRECT lines look like: menuentry "Arch Linux" --class "arch" {
* OLD, INCORRECT lines look like: menuentry "Arch|class=linuxmint,linux,os" {
* Grub2-gfxmenu-bzr used this
* Grub2-gfxmenu-bzr package is OLD. I use self-contained src pkgs the author provides now
* Don't use that old stuff any more
INSTALLATION & SPECIAL SETUP INFO:
* Split Boot = Separate / and /boot partitions
* If you're Split Boot, 64 Bit, LVM, some special setup, or confused/lost, see the respective areas before proceeding
* You can skip Install Steps 1-7 if you use binaries or yaourt a'la Intro Notes A
* If you have yaourt installed and ready, just yaourt -S grub2-gfxmenu and skip to step 8
* If you want to use binaries in pacman, add to /etc/pacman.conf and pacman -Sy grub2-gfxmenu:
* For 32 Bit:
[archfox]
Server = http://hateanthem.dreamhosters.com/arch/i686
* For 64 Bit:
[archfox]
Server = http://hateanthem.dreamhosters.com/arch/x86_64
Typical Installation (esp. 32 Bit Arch):
1) See Intro Notes A & B
2) Back up /boot/grub/grub.cfg, /boot/grub/menu.lst, or whatever you use
3) Remove your bootloader via pacman -R [grub, grub2, whatever]
4) Download the grub2-gfxmenu-overlay files:
* http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/grub2 … u-overlay/
5) Put them in $HOME/abs/local/grub2-gfxmenu-overlay
6) Make and install the package via makepkg -c -i -s from that directory
7) Repeat steps 4-6 for the grub2-gfxmenu files
* http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/grub2 … 2-gfxmenu/
8) As sudo/root, run: /sbin/grub-install /dev/sda
* If you have multiple HD's, change this to the drive you want to boot grub from
9) Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg to match your partition setup (if necessary)
10) Double check your work before rebooting
* pacman -Qs grub2 should show grub2-gfxmenu-overlay AND grub2-gfxmenu [1-7]
* ls /boot/grub should show a bunch of "mod" files [8]
* be sure /boot/grub/grub.cfg points to the right partitions [9]
:D) Finished!
* The default themes have a pretty low res, and aren't as cool as some of the others
* Make sure you have the proper gfxmode for your theme in grub.cfg if you use non-defaults
* See the latter half of this tutorial for help and custom theme/icon stuff
Installation on 64 Bit Arch:
* FYI, I hear grub2 svn, and thus the next version of gfxmenu, adds native 64 bit support
* For the least hassle, use binaries, then follow Typical Install #8-10:
* The 64 bit binary repository info is above the Typical Install section
* Alternatively, if you still want to COMPILE this with makepkg.. [Steps 1-7]
* You'll need either a 32 bit chroot/environment..
* http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arc … _Arch64.3F
* .. or you can use a regular 32 bit install
* Either way, change DESTARCH in the pkgbuild to x86_64
* Further help: Shaika-dzari's posts in this thread may be useful, but using his "-bzr" files is not advised!
* His syntax and grub2-gfxmenu-bzr are OLD; the former can crash new Grub2! (See Intro Notes B #4)
* If you're determined to use his -bzr, use the old syntax! If you use the new pkgs, don't use his syntax!
Notes for a Split Boot, LVM, maybe RAID:
* All of these users will likely need a similar grub.cfg
* Example Split Boot cfgs in Troubleshooting and later in this thread
* You will likely run into multiple problems listed under Troubleshooting; relax and expect it
* You might spare yourself problems by following Troubleshooting #6 before rebooting
* ... or cause problems you might not have had! Probably prevent 'em, though :)
* Split Booters: if that doesn't help, try looking at boriscougar's posts here
* His syntax is outdated and will crash Grub2, however! (See Intro Notes B #4)
* LVM/RAIDers:
* You need the kernel root= parts pointing to /dev/mapper/blahblah
* See lssjbrolli's posts here, esp. #19, for other grub.cfgs IF you have trouble
* His syntax is outdated and will crash Grub2, however! (See Intro Notes B #4)
Notes for Others:
* If you are lost/confused, please post here
* If you have another "special case", I'm afraid I probably can't help you
* You are welcome to try anyway and report your results; it might help someone else
TROUBLESHOOTING:
* Check ALL of the instructions and the Intro Notes A & B again
* Press 't' in graphical mode to switch to text mode, it's more forgiving with errors
* Press 'e' in text mode to edit an entry. Useful key combinations are shown there
* See post #78 or #63 for starting over from the Live CD; modify it to restore legacy grub
* Be sure your device node/name is correct, as per the Intro Notes
* Here is an example Split Boot grub.cfg menuentry with descriptions:
# Entry 0 - Arch Linux
menuentry "Arch Linux" --class "arch" {
# Below should be /boot, where the kernel/initrd/bootloader is. Here, it's HD 1, Partition 5
set root=(hd0,5)
# Below is /, where most of your installation is. HD 1, partition 6
# Note the backwards drive lettering/order on my pc!
# Grub calls my drive "hd0" while Arch labels the drive "/dev/sdb"
# Yours MAY or MAY NOT do that
# Also note, BECAUSE this is for a Split Boot, there is no /boot prefix
# Lastly, some distros seem to fail with /dev/disk/by-label entries, others work fine
linux /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sdb6 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
1) During grub-install, you get a nag about not being able to read /boot/grub/core.img
* I think this is fixed in a grub2 svn release, so hopefully the next grub2-gfxmenu will remove this section..
* Two methods.. both are hackish, but either 'works'.. I prefer Method 2, but it's more work + empty space..
* METHOD #1:
* This installs grub to your root partition instead of /boot (method obviously assumes a Split Boot):
* It will obviously not properly coincide with pacman installs/updates of grub2-gfxmenu stuff normally
* You can unmount /boot to upgrade/install grub2-gfxmenu stuff for now with pacman
* Re-mount /boot when you're done installing/upgrading said grub2-gfxmenu stuff
* If grub2-gfxmenu is updated, try installing again normally WITH /boot mounted first
* Your old grub folder is still on your /boot partition; I think it may be moved to avoid confusion
* If you move/remove the grub partition on ROOT (until properly installed of course), grub will break
1) mkdir /mnt/tmp
2) umount /dev/sda1 (assuming your /boot is sda1 of course from here)
3) mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/tmp
4) cp -r /mnt/tmp/grub /boot
5) Check ls /boot/grub shows the expected mod files and such, then try /sbin/grub-install /dev/sda again
6) Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg before you reboot; follow the tutorial otherwise
7) Be sure to re-mount /boot if you're not going to reboot after this tutorial / installing gfxmenu stuff
* METHOD #2:
* This installs grub2-gfxmenu "correctly", but puts a little empty space in front of your /boot partition
1) Boot into a LiveCD and resize your /boot partition; graphically (gparted) or CLI if you know how
* I decreased its size by 10 megs, which is likely MAJOR overkill, but it worked, and I can spare 10mb
2) Move the resized partition to the right, so the space you freed up is in front of it
3) Boot into the Arch LiveCD if you aren't there already, and go root
4) mkdir /mnt/root
5) mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/root (assuming sda3 is your root partition)
6) mount -t proc proc /mnt/root/proc
7) mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/root/sys
8) mount -o bind /dev /mnt/root/dev
9) chroot /mnt/root /bin/bash
10) mount /dev/sda1 /boot (assuming sda1 is /boot.. you can mount /home now too, if needed)
11) pacman -U /path/to/grub2-gfxmenu*pkg.tar.gz (only if its the only grub2-gfxmenu pkg there)
12) pacman -U /path/to/kernel26*pkg.tar.gz (only if its the only kernel pkg there)
13) Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg before you reboot; follow the tutorial otherwise
2) During grub-install, you get a nag about /dev/fd0 or something of the sort
* Your device map is wrong; edit /boot/grub/device.map accordingly and remove/edit such incorrect entries
* You may also need to run grub-mkdevicemap BEFORE doing this, but probably not
* Fd0 is the floppy disk, remove it if you don't actually have such a drive
* Alternatively, try adding --recheck to the grub-install /dev/yourDevice command
3) The text menu won't load, and you're dropped to a limited prompt
* Check that you are using the new/correct grub2-gfxmenu menuentry format (See Intro Notes B #4)
* You may have run the command incorrectly (or not at all) in Step 8, or your /boot changed numbers/letters
* You would probably need to start over from a livecd, if so
4) The graphical menu won't load, but the text one does
* Check that stuff exists in /boot/grub/themes
* Check that your set theme= line is properly suited to your system in grub.cfg:
* Most people need: set theme="/boot/grub/themes/themeName"
* A Split Boot / LVM / RAID / etc needs: set theme="/grub/themes/themeName/theme.txt"
* Split Boots / LVM/ RAID/ etc should check that set root= exists near the top and points to /boot
5) The graphical menu loads, but you have boxes/squares where fonts should be
* Add this (set to match YOUR /boot) somewhere near the TOP of your grub.cfg:
* set root=(hd0,5)
* Your loadfont lines ALL probably need to look like this (no /boot prefix):
* loadfont /grub/fonts/10x20.pf2
* This command with sudo/root permissions should be able to do it for you (make a backup!):
* cd /boot/grub/ && sed -i 's|/boot||g' grub.cfg
* This -could- affect (good or bad) other things. Fix if needed, before or after rebooting
6) The graphical menu loads, but when you select the os, it sits at "Press any key to continue"
* Check that grub.cfg's "set root=" line you have for that menuentry points to /boot
* Grub numbering has changed in grub2 (See Intro Notes B #2)
* Try [inc/dec]rementing the [drive/partition] by 1 number/letter
* Remove /boot from the front of stuff if you are running a Split Boot / LVM / RAID / etc
7) The graphical menu loads, but you get a nag about a failure to parse the block device
* Check all of the other troubleshooting first to see if it applies / works first
* Check that your kernel/initrd lines point to the correct places (remember partitions start from 1 now!)
* Check /etc/mkinitcpio.conf for hooks you no longer use (like fbsplash perhaps)
* Packages used by your hooks must be installed, like fbsplash for the fbsplash hook
8) The graphical menu loads, but you get a nag about finding root / init not found, or a similar error
* Check that grub.cfg is pointing to the right place in that menuentry's "linux" and "initrd" lines
* Grub numbering has changed in grub2 (See Intro Notes B #2)
* Try [inc/dec]rementing the [drive/partition] by 1 number/letter
* Remove /boot from the front if you are running a Split Boot / LVM / RAID / etc
* Try running the fallback/failsafe entry
* If it works, you need to mkinitcpio -p kernel26 from there
9) The graphical menu loads, but flickers horribly
* Try changing the resolution, perhaps to a default/1024x768
10) You're on an eeePC or use an intel 800/900 graphics chipset and can't use your native resolution
* NOTE: I've had reports that this no longer works or compiles or something recently, so YMMV
* Workaround until someone tries patching and reporting via grub2-915resolution's patch(es):
1) Compile (NOT install!) grub2-915resolution from AUR via makepkg (or yaourt and cancelling)
* Or grab 915resolution.mod from someone/somewhere else, perhaps
2) Install grub2-gfxmenu
3) Copy 915resolution.mod from step 1's MAIN source directory to /boot/grub/
* If you used yaourt and cancelled before installing, try /tmp/yaourt-tmp-yourname
4) Insert/change the following in grub.cfg [order matters I guess?]:
* insmod 915resolution
* 915resolution 34 1024 600 (or whatever else you want)
* set gfxmode 1024x600 (or whatever else you want)
5) Edit your theme's theme.txt file to look nice on the new res, if it's not already made for it
TWEAKING:
1) Changing the resolution
* Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, it's one of the first lines (set gfxmode=)
* I'm not sure what it supports, but I got up to 1280x1024 without problems
* You may need to change your theme's configuration file for it to look decent under a new res
2) Changing the theme
* Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg, it's one of the earlier lines (set theme=)
* Themes are in /boot/grub/themes
3) Changing the icons (Thanks to kholddagger post #97)
* /boot/grub/themes/icons , seemingly PNG only, scaled according to theme/resolution in use
* Add your OS icon by changing the --class option in your menuentry to MATCH the .png
* Ie, for /boot/grub/themes/icons/fedora.png:
* menuentry "Fedora Linux" --class "fedora" {
* Don't like a default icon, but don't want them overwritten by updates?
* Make it "distro2". Ie distro2.png and --class "distro2"
* I am partial to http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ … tent=95970 "Circle Starts"
4) Adding new distros
* See Tweaking #3 for changing/adding icons
* Clone Arch's menuentry and tweak it to match your other OS
* Search your other OS's /boot folder/partition for kernel and init filenames
5) Advanced theme tweaking
* See the author's website and documentation:
* http://grub.gibibit.com/Theme_format
* http://grub.gibibit.com/gfxmenu_design
6) Advanced font tweaking
* See the author's website and documentation:
* http://grub.gibibit.com/New_font_format
* The newest version "supports UTF-8 fonts", but I'm not sure what that even means :D
KNOWN AVAILABLE THEMES:
* All custom themes so far are set up for 1024x768 and the defaults for 640x480
* Most of them are made by Xabz, and packaged by me
* If you have alternate resolution layouts for any of them, PLEASE share!
* If you make any new ones, PLEASE share! :)
1) The first two screenshots are defaults
2) The third blue screenshot is my theme, aftermathblue (previously archfox), a tweak of the defaults
* It has since been updated to 0.2 and looks a little different; certainly much less hackish
* The name refers to the wallpaper "Aftermath" from the arch linux wallpapers package, turned blue.
* The screenshot's icons are tweaked Google Images results for "windows icon" and "arch linux icon"
* If you have suggestions, post 'em
3) There are several really nice ones made by a guy in Chile named "xabz":
* See above "Typical Install" for binary repositories containing these theme packages
* You can also find them in the AUR; they are prefixed with "grub2-theme-"
* You can see screenshots of them on page 4 of this thread, post #94
4) There is another awesome one here by some presumably German person:
* http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/grub2 … st-1835914
* I can't seem to find a download link for it, only a picture :(

How can I remove GRUB2 from my iMac?
Hello Internet!
I have a 21.5" iMac (intel based, version 10.7.5), and I have recently tried to install Ubuntu on it.
Ubuntu installed successfully, and with it came GRUB2. Now, when Ubuntu started doing all sorts of wierd crap i decided i might as well just use it from a LiveCD or LiveUSB and remove it from my system. So i deleted all the partitions (including SWAP).
I have managed to remove the SWAP partition which is parcticularily tricky, by erasing and reformatting it to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, and then simply removing it from the disk utility.
Now, I have installed rEFIt, and when booting my computer I see two options in my rEFIt - on the left I see a "EFI/somethingsomething/grubfile" (not the real directoy, It just says GRUB in the end and it is in the EFI) and on the right I see Mac OS X. I wondered how can i possibly remove GRUB2 completely from my system?
Thanks for any help .You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Grub2 multiple installs on same pc
Hi friends, can we have multiple installations of grub2 on the same pc on different partitions ( not the MBR ) ?
For example , I have three partitions:
1) /dev/sda4 (500 MB)
2) /dev/sda5 (500 MB)
3) /dev/sda6 (500 MB)
can i install grub2 on all the above partitions at same time ?
Many thanks.If you install each distro's GRUB2 to the MBR, but each install will overwrite the previous. You can use configfile to boot the other partitions. In arch anyway, you can use grub-install to reinstall arch's GRUB2 to the MBR. AFAIK, this should work with other distros as well. You have to chroot into arch then run grub-install to do this.

See the following Fedora bug report thread for some more info on configfile (particularly comment #23 and #25)..

It is not recommended to install GRUB2 to a partition... -
Our company currently runs an office software equivalent comparable to Office 2003 level. I was researching options (licensing!) for stepping up our office to real Microsoft Office product ... and got stuck with that idea ... totally confused at this point.
Am I missing something or the cheapest SMB volume licensing option for MS Office 2013 (Standard, no Access component) is like twice as expensive as the retail equivalent? Why is that so? It makes no sense to me at all.
I can find retail box of Office 2013 Home and Business for around $190 while the cheapest Open License for similar equivalent seems to be priced at $369 (what!?) ... and that is even without Software Assurance?
Makes it kinda hard to convince management about benefits of VL program over retail ... especially since we are not a Volume Licensed customer (yet) and this purchase *might* make it worth becoming one (does it?).
On top of that I can't even make decision if we should really go with Office 2013 after reading about live/online account requirement for activation, and here a question how does it work in volume licensing version? I assume it will be a great pain with
installs from retail media and activation, but VL should have some tools or workarounds for that, no? I read that Office 2010 didn't have such problems and am sad I didn't push towards it when it was still available on retail market.
Maybe we should go with 2013 subscription for first year and see how that works for us ...
One thing for sure, I've been digging around this subject for weeks and my headache doesn't want to go away.
Open to suggestions.anybody, any insights?
Pls, also note that I run a one person IT department for this company, so all the dirty work (installs) will be done by me, hence my question. I can do deployments via GPO, but would like to know about activation gotchas (MS live accounts) for Office 2013,
is that true for retail licenses?
As per Volume Licensing, am I looking right and cheapest 1 computer Office 2013 open license stands for like $369? why is i so expensive in volume licensing plans? I doubt our management approves it this way ... which probably means retail licensing for
me and a great headache with activations over a sneaker net ... times 30 ... -
[REQUEST] Less verbose Grub2
In my opinion this one of the little nice details that Ubuntu has. It would be nice if anyone can make a PKGBUILD for a Grub2 package that can ignore all the messages that appear before the splash screen, I refer to 'Welcome to Grub2... etc.' and 'loading' messages. It would be great, I think!
A PKGBUILD for grub2-bios-ubuntu with no messages ('Welcome to Grub2... etc.' and 'loading') is now in AUR:

dell Windows XPSame problem here, but can't get through to 5 songs. Only reason I updated was to dload videos from iTunes, since it won't with v. 1.1.1 ( I mean can't dload purchased videos from iTunes store. Ones that I converted transfer ok in v 1.1.1)
Can't restore through iTunes, have to do it through the updater. Restored, worked fine until I updated to v 1.2 again. iPod is useless now.
Any ideas? -
MacBook Pro Retina 15 - Eyestrain and Headaches
Hello all!
I would like to come back to the eyestrain topic. This problem was discussed intensively, and I've been following the long thread about LED causing eyestrain on MacBooks, but I don't know if we reached a conclusion.
Well. I bought a MacBook Pro Retina 15 (Mid 2014) three weeks ago and since then I have eyestrain, headaches, red eyes and dry eyes daily. I've never felt such things in years working with computers.
Like some people, I think that I don't have issues with LED screens. My old laptop has a glossy LED screen, I have LED TV in my house and I never ever had such symptoms!
I've directly contacted Apple Support too, but the only thing they've told me is that I should have my eyes checked, since there is nothing wrong with the machine. ****! My eyes are not the problem too! I am 29 years old, and I wear reading glasses, because I have small degree of myopia.... my lens have a special coating anti-glare and with UV protection (Crizal). But nothing seems to help me to have a painless experience using the rMBP. Due to that eyestrain, I went to an opthamologist, but he hasn't found anything wrong with my eyes!
I feel tremendously sad, frustrated and disappointed that this is happening with me (and other people), even more when this is my first Apple product. So sad.
Well, guys. I don't know what to do anymore! I tried everything that I could: went to the doctor, increased and lowered the resolution (i am using Best for retina now), increased and lowered the screen brightness; tried to use f.lux app and Shades. And these symptoms appears both when using the Intel Iris as the GT 750M. I'm using Mavericks, but tried the Yosemite too.
Nothing worked!
I still don't tried to put a screen protector, but I guess that also will not work. By the way, someone knows a good screen protector to test?
Besides, anyone knows if this issue is due the LED backlid, software related, PWD, refresh rate or what? Anyone reached a conclusion? Or, more important, anyone knows how to fix it?
Apple never expressed respect. And although we are the exception, I think it would be important to have a satisfaction about what is happening. And not just talk that the problem is in our eyes.
I would not want to get rid the machine - I liked it very much! But I think that sell this Mac is the only way to me. I don't want to stay with a computer that I can't use like I want, because it is hurting me.
This is very disapointing... so if anyone could help me, I'll be very glad.
Thank you, guys!
Sorry for any inconvenience and my english, it's not my native language.The best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians diagnose the problem.
Ciao. -
[SOLVED] GRUB2 does not process hooks: System doesn't boot
My initial system was an SSD where /dev/sda1 was my boot partition and /dev/sda2 was an (encrypted) LVM containing home, root, var and swap. Since all partitions were ext3, I decided to do a clean format to ext4 and copy my data back on the partitions. First I archived everything but home with the arch live CD onto a server with:
rsync -a /mnt/* root@server:/path/to/backupdir/
Everything went fine, but after copying back, the system would not boot (it was GRUB Legacy). Since it was not in the MBR but on sda1, I figured I could upgrade to GRUB2 now. So I followed the described procedure (from a live CD) and installed GRUB2 (this time into the MBR of sda. I then regenerated the image via mkinitcpio -p linux and generated a configuration file.
When I try to start the system, GRUB2 gets loaded, but after the two messages for loading the ramdisk it remains silent for some time (no output at all) until it finally complains it cannot find my root. But I did not see any output of any hook being processed (including encrypt) so of course it cannot find my root, since it is still encrypted.
I reformatted my boot partition again and reinstalled and regenerated everything again (I copied the directory contents from my backup but moved the old grub folder). Still the same issue. I know I could probably just reinstall everything and restore the settings, but I'd really prefer to restore my system, since this should be a lot faster.

Last edited by javex (2012-08-10 18:33:41)Thank you for your reply. I looked further into the grub.cfg and removed the quiet part. Apparently the problem is that it runs all hooks but does not prompt me for a passphrase when running the encrypt hook. Why does this occur?
Edit: I solved this: apparently I forgot to specify a cryptdevice. Since the article about dm-crypt does not talk about GRUB2, I missed that. I will rework that section to specify GRUB2 and GRUB-Legacy

[SOLVED] Can't boot Windows 8 using grub2. invalid EFI file path

I have just successfully installed Arch linux with grub2 as its boot manager. I
followed the arch beginner guide. I've used grub before and I'm familiar with
it, so chose to use grub instead for efistub. I installed os-prober and
ran grub-mkconfig to create the grub.cfg file. The problem now is that I recieve
an error when I try to boot windows 8. I have two drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb)
and I believe both are EFI-systems.
However, it's not very important for me to use grub, so if booting into windows
8 is easier using efistub, I will try that.
The computer is ASUS ux32vd with a hybrid disk with 25GB on the SSD and 500GB on
the hard drive. I believe the SSD part is used by Windows.
This is the first error I recieved when I tried to boot windows.
error: can't find command `drivemap'.
error: invalid EFI file path.
Press any key to continue...
Then I tried to follow this post
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150183 and made a new boot
entry "Windows 82". And I got a new error:
error: unspecified search type.
error: file '/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi' not found
Press any key to continue...
Here are some command line outputs.

EDIT:
I gave up trying to make grub work, so I uninstalled grub and deleted all the grub files I could find.
# pacrem grub-efi-x86_64
# rm -fr /boot/grub
That last one I came to regret later on. So I installed rEFInd using the archlinux beginners guide. When I then tried to boot into windows It told me that /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod was not found. I then reinstalled grub-efi-x86_64 and copied /usr/lib/grub/x86_64 to /boot/grub. Now everything works fine.

The EFI stub loader is a Linux-only boot loader; however, it is possible to use the EFI stub loader in conjunction with a separate boot manager, such as rEFInd or gummiboot. In such a configuration, you'd use the boot manager to select the OS to boot (Windows or Linux, and possibly the specific Linux kernel), and the boot loader (the Windows loader or the EFI stub loader built into a specific kernel) will then take over booting the OS. In Arch, this is often easier to configure than is GRUB, since GRUB is very complex and its automated tools to help with setting things up often get it wrong.
This is the first error I recieved when I tried to boot windows.
error: can't find command `drivemap'.
error: invalid EFI file path.

The "drivemap" command in GRUB is generally used when booting a BIOS-mode boot loader, and in fact your "Windows Recovery Environment (loader) (on /dev/sda2)" and "Windows 8 (loader) (on /dev/sda4)" GRUB entries are both built as for BIOS-mode Windows installations -- but the fact that your disks both use GPT means that Windows won't boot in BIOS mode on your computer. (This is one of the many things that the GRUB setup scripts can get wrong.)
Then I tried to follow this post
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150183 and made a new boot
entry "Windows 82". And I got a new error:
error: unspecified search type.
error: file '/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi' not found
Press any key to continue...
Both your "Windows 8" and "Windows 82" entries refer to an EFI boot loader file called EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi on your EFI System Partition (ESP). This should be correct, but your Boot Info Script output doesn't show any evidence of such a file. Sometimes Boot Info Script misses such things, so you may want to check it just to be sure. Your ESP is /dev/sda1, and it looks like it's being mounted at /boot/efi by default, so check for the /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft directory tree, and for /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi in particular. If that file isn't present, then something is wrong -- perhaps you mistakenly erased the ESP when you installed Linux, thus wiping out the Windows boot loader; or perhaps the file was accidentally deleted somewhere along the way. (Note that on FAT, which the ESP uses, case is irrelevant, and in fact case varies between the filenames reported by Boot Info Script and what's recorded in your configuration files.)
You do have another boot loader file that may be a duplicate of the Windows boot loader: EFI/BOOT/bkpbootx64.efi. This filename is generally created by Ubuntu's "Boot Repair" tool, which IMHO can do as much harm as good, especially on a system that's not booting Ubuntu. If you ran this tool, though, it's conceivable that bkpbootx64.efi is a copy of the Windows boot loader, so copying it to EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi might get things working. OTOH, the Windows boot loader relies on other files to do its job, so if they're not present, copying the Windows boot loader to its original location won't be sufficient.
If you can't get things working based on the preceding suggestions, I recommend you run a Windows repair tool. These are accessible from a Windows recovery disc. Such disc images are readily available on the Internet, but I don't happen to have any links handy. Try Microsoft's own site; images obtained from random third-party sites might contain malware. Once you've done this, chances are the computer will boot directly into Windows. You'll then need to either restore GRUB as the default boot loader or install another boot loader or boot manager. You can use the Windows "bcdedit" command to do the former, as in:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\arch-grub\grubx64.efi
You'll need to type this from an Administrator Command Prompt window.
