GT683: swapping RAID0 HD config for non-RAID/AHCI SSD boot drive

A question re: MSI skus which come with 2x HDs in RAID0 config. My system (GT683DXR-603US sku) came with 2x 500GB HDs (WD5000BEKT) in RAID0 config.
First thing I did was to replace this with a Crucial M4 256GB ssd, though prior to this I took an image of the stock system (prior to even booting it up the first time) and restored said image onto the SSD.
The first time I booted off the SSD (no other HD in the unit, as I pulled both of the WD 500GB out to try the SSD alone), I went into the BIOS and changed the SATA config from RAID to AHCI. But Win boot cycle almost immediately resulted in a blue screen. I then changed SATA config from AHCI to IDE, w/the same boot result. Finally, set the BIOS config back to the original RAID, and Win7 booted fine.
Upon confirming SSD Win7 boot and testing operation successfully, I pulled the SSD, place the 2x 500GB HDs back in the system, just long enough to break the RAID 0 array.
Replaced the SSD in the primary bay, and left one of the 500GB HDs in the 2nd bay, and that's how I'm using the system now: Crucial M4 SSD boot drive, WD Scorpio 500GB data drive ... with the BIOS SATA config set to RAID mode.
So the system is working now, but question is - should I pursue trying to change the BIOS setting from RAID to AHCI mode? I'm thinking that in order to get the SATA 6Gbps performance out of the Crucial M4, the Intel SATA config needs to be set to AHCI ... yet apparently I first need to modify the Win7 config (the SATA driver, perhaps?), before I can modify the BIOS sata config?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

bump ... any thoughts? I'm thinking to leave my sysetm in RAID mode, as from what I've read recently Intel storage mgr supports TRIM in RAID mode as well as AHCI.

    As below on how to install the matrix driver, there is no 'how to install on a system not already preconfigured with raid/AHCI'. This driver creates a F6 Floppy disc, why? because windows will  not recognise your hard in AHCI mode without the driver installed. This is why we get a reboot with AHCI enabled. It gets to a point then when windows loads with no driver it reboots. If you try to load the driver first, the hard ware has not been enabled so there is nothing to install. Reinstall Windows is the only way.

    Well I went for it, RAID that is. I borrowed a 300GB SATA II Seagate Barracuda from work to backup to and got started. I shall layout how I did it for those having trouble.
    So my old config was Maxtor SATA II 80 DiamondMax system drive and a Maxtor SATA I 250GB DiamondMax for Data. Now with the 300GB SATA II to backup to and running in IDE mode enhanced with speed disabled in bios. HDTach benchmarking is in above posts for these drives.
    I copied all that data I wanted to extra drive and made a boot floppy and copied the files from the 975xPUE CD for the Intel RAID controller.
    CDROM:\IDE\Intel\ICH7R\Floppy\32
    Now I shut down my system, removed the bachup drive and entered the bios.
    *I set back all my setting to default, no overclock.
    *Integrated peripherals/Onboard JMB361 mode: Disabled JMicron controller
    *Intergrated peripherals/SATA Devices Configuration/SATA Mode/ Set to RAID,
    *SATA Port Speed/Disabled.
    *Set system to boot from CDrom.
    I put in my floppy and the XP CD and rebooted, CTRL +I to enter the Intel RAID setup and first thing I found out was that with my 80GB and 250GB drives in a RAID 0, I was getting 152GB of a logical drive. So I setup the RAID and rebooted.
    80GB+250GB=152GB RAID 0 (I have about 200GB backed up, so I going to have to get another drive, SATA II 300 maybe)
    Now the system booted off the XP CD and as it started to load, it read the floppy and I DID not press F6. I noticed that just before the setup screen the system loaded the driver automatically from the floppy. And low and behold it recognised my hard drive 152GB and I kicked off the install.
    * Note: After Setup had finished formatting the partition, the system loaded the drivers from the floppy again and then started copying files from the CD before restarting to boot from the hard drive. So if you had already removed the floppy, the drivers for the Intel RAID controller would not be loaded and the second stage of install would never get started, blue screen or not recognise you hard drive.
    The rest of the install went very quick and I installed all the drivers and NOW for the juicy bits.
    Ok so I thought, how am I going to read my backup drive which is IDE/SATA on my system if it is in RAID. So I connected the drive to the Jmicron SATA port 5 enabled the JMicron controller in the bios and set it to IDE.
    *NOTE: After I  rebooted the Intel RAID had reverted back to IDE so I had to go back into the bios again and set it back to RAID. When I rebooted I got the Intel RAID slash screen and then the JMicon one showing me the 300GB and asking my to press a button to continue. Quite abit of extra startup time with both enabled.
    Windows loaded fine and both my C: 152GB RAID 0 and D: 300GB were there, but the 300GB was showing as a removable device! I know there is a reg fix for that somewhere.
    Benchmarking: This is the best bit!
    Maxtor Diamond 80GB SATA II and 250GB SATA I = 150GB Logical RAID 0 test with HDTach 3, 8mb test:
               Burst Speed : 320.9 mb/s
               Average Read : 120.3 mb/s
    Now that is some difference from IDE enhanced so well worth the effort!
      IDE:        Burst Speed: 215.3mb/s
                    Average Read: 59.0mb/s
    Now I also tested the Seagate 300GB SATA II drive which is connected to the JMicron controller in IDE mode and the results show that the JMicron does not support SATA II drives but maxes out SATA I: so even if I do buy and extra drive will I be able to add it to the RAID 0 or will I be stuck with SATA I speeds on the JMicrom controller. No doubt I will soon find out.
      Seagate:  Burst Speed: 150.5 mb/s
                    Average Read: 50.5 mb/s

  • Procedure for SSD boot drive in Mac Pro?

    I just purchased a 115GB SSD that I want to use as the boot drive in my Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8. I've read several articles about how to set this up but none seem to be working for me. On the SSD boot drive I want only the essentials: OS, Home Folder, Apps. Everything else (docs, downloads, music, photos, movies, etc.) needs to go on my 1TB storage HD. The problem I'm having using Carbon Cloner and Super Duper to copy the OS, HF and apps to the SSD is they're copying too much data, filling up the SSD with non-essentials (there should only be about 90GB of data being copied but much more seems to be transferred). I can't seem to lean-down what's being moved. Would doing a new install with the Snow Leopard DVD and then copying over only the essential files/folders with Migration Assistant be better, more specific?
    Has anyone perfected this procedure, and can give me step-by-step instructions? All help is greatly appreciated!

    There are dozens and dozens of threads, MPG, MacRumors and elsewhere.
    don't move anything from  "home" except the bare essential ~/Library (1GB at most) with CCC and deelect everything else. That should get you down to size.
    Before you bought I hope you asdded up the /applications and good estimate. most users can get an OS/apps into 60GB or less (the max I would want to see on SSD you have) FCP and some others or if you hae a lot of large apps - some allow for installing in alternate locations as well as into system/library.
    Some - there are always some - have had trouble cloning. Some had trouble with installing, too. Can't win for losing at every turn sometimes.

  • K7N2-ISLR, IDE3 for non-RAID HDD

    Hello,
    Can I use IDE3 to support a non-RAID drive? If so, how do I set this up.
    IDE1 has two 40 GB drives
    IDE2 has CD-RW and DVD
    I'd like to add a Maxtor 120 GB drive, but can't figure out how to set it up.
    Any help would be appreciated...b

    Using IDE3 requires you to set it up as a raid device, but it's not a problem. Just connect the drive, boot up, press F1 when it asks to configure for RAID, and use RAID 0. It'll work just fine there.

    I just set up 2 x 500 Gb as a raid 0 via the disk utilites then install Snow Leopard. To my suprise, i hardly see/feel any speed improvement and actually opening and closing folders seem longer. Anyone notice this ???

    All depends on the drive's performance, your needs and expectations I would guess.
    I had never really found it essential but those working with heavy large CS4 files can. And to use RAID0 for scratch; for media.
    Today, I think SSD is best bet or a pair 60GB, or WD 10K 600GB VelociRaptor, etc.
    And keep everything that is not OS and apps related on another array or hard drive.
    When I was using 15K boot drive, two just gave me larger volume was all, but having an array of two 10K drives for data/media along with 15K, yes.

  • SSD Boot Drive for Mac Pro

    Apologies in advance, I’m really not great with this sort ofstuff.
    Basically, what I would like to do is add an SSD to my MacPro and use that as my boot drive.  Ihave a 1TB HDD which is currently doing everything but I’d like to use thispurely to store music, videos etc.
    As well as booting to Lion, I’d also like to use the SSD torun Windows 7 with VMware Fusion – presume this doesn’t cause any problems?
    The plan would be to have the system software andapplications on the SSD and everything else on the HDD.  Only thing I’m not sure of is where the homedirectory should go?
    Does this all sound like a realistic goal?  Also, will this be an relatively straightforward process?  Migration Assistant?

    So in effect, lets just say your SSD drive fails. As you are currently setup, can you boot from your secondary drive to your backed up OSX, or do you have to have restore that backup image to a new hard drive?
    My whole rational of keeping the home dir separate (disk) from the boot dir is that I can switch among any number of boot drives any time I want to.  For example, as a hypothetical case*, I use 10.6.5, and I want to update to 10.6.6, 10.6.7, or 10.6.8,  I just do it to my ssd.  Now I can still boot from my 10.6.5 backup, say for the sake of comparison to some weird behavior I see on the update, without a blink of the eye.  I'm still using my same (common) home dir because it is not involved with the update.  If I want to go "back" I can restore the ssd from my 10.6.5 backup.
    Of course I would actually do it the other way and boot and update from the backup leaving the ssd alone (don't want to write to it any more than I have to).  Only if I was satisfied with the new OS on the backup would I then update my ssd.
    The point of all this is keeping the home dir off the boot dir allows you to "flit", "jump", switch, whatever, to different OSs (or backups of the same OS) at will.  Your home dir is none the wiser unless the OS dramatically changes or screws things up (so that's why this technique may or may not work across major OS revisions -- Snow Leopard to Lion for example, but its great with a single OS sequence).
    While everyone always debates the pros and cons of keeping the home dir separate from the boot dir, what always seems to get lost or not mentioned is the benefit of being able to switch among the OSs when they are separate.
    So all of this was a long way of answering your question -- no you don't have to backup to the original boot drive before using it.  Just boot from the backup.  Your home dir couldn't care less.
    * For me going to 10.6.6, .7., .8 is hypothetical since I use 10.6.5 and have no current plans of updating beyond that (can you say "app store"? -- don't want it my machine -- and I won't debate any comments on this -- its my personal decision.  And besides this is off topic.).

    Under Leopard, I was able to enable RAID 1 on a boot drive without having to move data, reformat, move data back, etc., using:
    +diskutil enableRAID mirror disk0+
    This has worked for me many, many times without issue.
    I'm now attempting this on a Mac Pro boot drive running 10.6.2 using:
    +diskutil appleRAID enable mirror disk0s2+
    But, it's not working. Actually, it's working in that it enables RAID 1 on the drive, but as a result, the Mac Pro will no longer BOOT from the drive. The drive is available (ie. I can access it if I boot from another drive with an OS on it, etc.) and the drive shows up in Startup Disk (in System Preferences) as a bootable drive, but it DOESN'T show up when I boot the machine holding down the option key. As soon as I delete the RAID, the drive is bootable again.
    Does anyone know if there's a way to enable RAID 1 on a boot drive under SL without the need to reformat? Other options/solutions (3rd party, etc.)?

    I'm seeing exactly the same problem, but I thought it was limited to having two raid sets and bless getting confused.
    My MacPro3,1 has two RAID mirror sets and it appears the wrong Boot OS X partitions are used.
    The volume I would like to boot from is a mirror of disk0s2 and disk1s2 and mounted at /Volumes/srvosx. Disk Utility successfully created the two Boot OS X partitions disk0s3 and disk1s3.
    Then I restored a working system onto the raid volume using asr.
    However, when using bless, it activates the Boot OS X partitions of the other raid set, which has no system installed. So this choice makes no sense at all. The other raid set is composed of disk2s2 and disk3s2 and mounted at /Volumes/data.
    This is the output I get from bless:

    I can get it to boot just fine by manually populating the Boot OS X partitions, but this is a pain.
    I have tried to figure out what is going on from the bless source code at
    http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/bless/bless-71.1/libbless/RAID/BLGetRAIDB ootDataForDevice.c
    But since bless seems to get the information about the Boot OS X volumes from IOKit, I also checked the device tree with IORegistryExplorer (Developer Tools). Everything looks fine though.
    I wonder where the linking between the raid volume and its boot helper partitions is done. Clearly it does not work right in my case and I suspect it could also be the same problem in your case.

    The best size is the size you need to store OS X and your apps without getting the SSD full. For example, if OS X and your apps take less than 100 GB, you should consider a 128 GB SSD, and if they take 150 GB, go for a 256 GB SSD.

  • HDD for editing - RAID or SSD?

    Hi guys.
    I have looked extensively at the tweakers page not too long ago and built myself a machine which has been working out great, but as time passed, I am rethinking my HDD decisions.
    Basically I have 2x 3tb 7200rpm drives in RAID 0 - but I am wondering if I am better off using a 1tb SSD?
    The RAID drive will almost always have half of it empty and the SSD would come very close to being full.
    So what works out better? Maybe 2x 512GB ssds in RAID 0?

    My personal new system has an Samsung 840 Pro drive (of course if buying today it would be an 850 Pro) for the OS/Application /Media Cache and a SM951 for the project/media drive.  Then I would archive/backup to the antique hard drive technology.

  • How can I boot to a fakeRAID -Raid0 set drive from a non-raid hdd

    Hi all,
    First of all, my English is bad and I hope I can explain it what my problem is. Secondly, I need your expert help with my problem right now.
    I'll just layout some hardware information and some history before I start. Currently, my motherboard has 3 hdd controllers which are:
    1) Intel - 6 ports --> contains 2 sets of RAID drives = 2 x 60gb SSD (boot drive) and 2 x 500gb HDD (data drive) both in RAID 0
    2) Jmicron - 2 ports --> 1 port is used by the DVDROM
    3) Marvell - 2 ports --> I don't use these ports as they are slow and are so bad - currently disabled in BIOS
    HISTORY: Before, my 2 x 60gb SSDs (RAID 0) contained Arch 64 + Windows 7 64 with Grub as the main bootloader. I remembered having a hard time setting up intel fakeraid with Arch linux + Win7 dual boot before, but fortunately, with your help, I found the solution and I've been using it ever since until today.
    NOW is kind of a different issue. I bought a new 60gb SSD (just one). I totally reformatted everything with my 2 x 60gb SSD Raid 0 and I decided to just use that exclusively for windows, still in RAID 0. My brand new SSD will ONLY have Arch64 on it. So I installed Windows 7 first on my Raid SSD set. I plugged my new SSD to the Jmicron port so I can take advantage of AHCI. I don't want to mix my new SSD to the Intel Controllers since its not RAID anyway. Anyway, I installed Arch 64 on the new SSD in the JMicron Port fine.
    Now here comes the problem, I set the Jmicron port where the Arch is installed to be the primary boot in the BIOS (since GRUB is there) and I can't boot to Windows! It gives me an error that It can't find the target drive (Win7 in the Raid 0 - intel ports). I've tried modifying the menu.lst and trying so many combinations and It still fails. Of course, I can boot to Arch fine since the drive is independent. It looks like grub legacy can't boot to fakeRaid drives if its not installed on that same drive.
    Can you give me advice on how to fix this issue?
    Also, I was just thinking, is there a 3rd party Windows Bootloader, that can be installed in Raid 0, that can pick up Linux and boot from it. I was thinking of just making the Windows 7 as primary boot in BIOS, with a 3rd party bootloader, then just boot to Arch.

    Yes, I have redirected my User folder to the D: drive.
    I know that some shared components must reside on the C: drive; that's fine. I just don't have room for the entire installation on there.
    The real issue here is that, when a drive other than C: is selected as the destination, the CS6 package installs into a broken state every time, out of the gate, on my system. Some components get installed to D: and some to C:, but the various components of the programs seem confused about what exists where, as shown below:
    I select a folder on D: as the destination folder for the install, and here is what I get:
    64-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the D: drive as specified, but attempting to start them results in a configuration error message stating that the program must be uninstalled and reinstalled, and lists "Error code: 1".
    32-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the C: drive against what I specified. The shortcuts installed in the Start menu for the 32-bit versions point to the locations where these program files SHOULD be, on the D: drive. If the Adobe folder containing the program files is copied over to the correct location on D:, these programs function normally with no errors.
    I have the 32-bit versions working by copying the program files from C: to D:. I just want to get the 64-bit versions working as well.
    Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated; I'm really looking forward to testing the CS6 suite on my system!

  • BIOS setup for SSB boot drive and 2 RAID 0 data drives

    I'm  trying to setup my new rig.  I was able to get Win 7 to see all drives when plugged into the white SATA connectors.  This with no BIOS RAID.  If I change the BIOS from AHCI to RAID, Windows fails to boot completely.
    After some research, I tried plugging the SSD boot drive into the JMicron controlled blue SATA 7 connector.  It works.  The 2 WD 640's are in the South Bridge controlled SATA 1-6 connectors (3 & 4).  Windows sees the drives with On-Chip ATA Devices set to AHCI.  I can setup the 640's with On-Chip ATA Devices set to RAID and the BIOS sees them during boot up, but Windows can't.  I did install the RAID drivers as specified in the manual Appendix B.
    My system specs are  in my sig.  I don't see them in preview, so I hope the show up.
    So, what did I miss?  Thanks if advance for any assistance!

    Installing the RAID Driver Under Windows
    (for Non-bootable RAID Array)
    1. Insert the MSI DVD into the DVD-ROM drive.
    2. The DVD will auto-run and the setup screen will appear.
    3. Under the Driver tab, click on AMD chipset drivers by your need. The AMD chipset
    drivers includes RAID Driver.
    4. The driver will be automatically installed.
    Plus, I installed the JMB36x drive under the RAID button on the MSI CD.

  • K8N Diamond Plus SiI 3132 WinXP x64 non-RAID drivers?

    I'm looking for non-RAID drivers for the SiI 3132 on my K8N Diamond Plus for WinXP x64 (I managed to fine the x32 ones and they work fine so I know it's not the drives or the moboard.  I tried the drivers on MSI's website.
    I've searched around the forum and followed the leads onto planetamd64 and the Asus website for them, but to no avail.
    To be precise, I have selected non-RAID in the BIOS, and the drives to show up on on the POST screen, but do not appear in Win 64; there is the classic exclamation mark in the device manager for a 'Mass Storage Device'.  I don't want to concatenate the drives in RAID mode, so I did not try booting with that selected in the BIOS lest it destroy the stuff I have on them. 
    [I miss the simple JBOD option in the 3114...]

    Hi all,
    I solved the problem. 
    You won't find the drivers under the drivers section of SiI's website but you will in the Knowledge Base.  Look under Serial ATA | COntrollers | SiI3132, you'll find article 11043 'SATA 64 bit Windows IDE driver - released' dated 8/19/05.  Click under that and you'll find a file 3132_win64_idrv_1004_logo.zip.  It's what you need.

  • How to back up raid drv that's in non-raid config?

    I had planned to use one sata drive as my main drive, the second sata drive for video streaming, and my pata drive on IDE3 to store backup images  of my main sata drv as well as bkup images of other computers on my network. But after reading some of the posts here it looks like none of the imaging programs will work even if I'm not using a stripe or a mirror config. (I have drive Image 2002, DI 7, and ghost 2003)
    I'm not crazy about mirroring the 2 sata drvs because a mirror will duplicate a messed up hd (due to a misbehaving installed game, spyware, etc.) just as quickly as a perfectly fuctioning drv. I would like to be able to create a reliable restorable image of my main drv when it is the way I want it.  Then when my main drv does get messed up (which has happened to me before) I can restore my good bkup and go from there.
    I also like the performance advantage of a striped array, but once again how do I make a resorable backup?
    Does anyone have any ideas or at least a comprise that will let me use my 3 raid connections and be able to back up. I only have one IDE connection left (besides the IDE3 that I'd like to use).

  • S20 *new* RAID config for retail Windows 7 install...questions

    I’ve recently ordered a S20 and I have a few questions about my situation/configuration, if anyone has the knowledge and time, I'd really appreciate it.
    I’ve configured the workstation to be shipped without an installed OS, a single SATA hard drive, and no optical drive.  I have a new retail copy of Windows 7 Professional that I will install, two Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives that I will install in RAID1 configuration, and a new DVD multi-recorder ready to install.  The drive that comes with the workstation will be used as well, but not as the boot drive.  I wish to boot off of a partition on the RAID1 set.
    I’ve looked into the hardware/user guides for as much information as I could find, but I’m not clear, and thus concerned, as to what I will need to do to get RAID setup with a boot partition and install Windows.
    I see that there are three SATA ports for hard drives on the main board. 
    1)  Can RAID be configured using ANY combination of these ports, and is the unused port still available for normal SATA drive hosting?
    For instance, can I configure two 1TB hard drives on the first two ports and configure a third non-RAID drive on the third port?
    I am now familiar with the BIOS RAID configuration utility from reading the guides.
    2)  How do I install an OS (Windows 7 32 or 64) on a new RAID partition, once it is configured, if my retail version of Windows doesn't have the driver?
    For instance, can I provide the driver during installation via the Windows 7 setup?
    I understand that there are also two SATA ports for optical drives on a separate controller (for five SATA ports total).
    3)  If I attach my DVD drive to one of the SATA ports intended for optical devices, will the system see it as a bootable device?
    I need to make my DVD drive a boot device in order to install windows, so I'm hoping that the system will see it that way.  I also hope that the SATA ports are labeled on the main board!  (Optical 0, 1 / Disk 0, 1, 2)  ???
    If anyone has the time to help me with these three questions I think I will be more at ease.  I worry about going off the path and ordering a blank machine, but I am adamant about a non-OEM OS.
    BTW, I am moving to the S20 from a five year old IntelliStation M Pro which is the best machine I've owned so far.  I also keep a ThinkPad X61 at my side.  Really looking forward to the new workstation!

  • How to config JMS queues for non-AQueue products? Only config files?

    Assume I have the requirement NOT to use Oracles built-in Aqueue JMS provider but use another (external)product like:
    Apache ActiveMQ, JBossMQ, IBM MQseries,... instead.
    Can I config these JMS products through OC4Js web browser config web pages as well or am I forced in such cases to use configuration through XML config files?
    How do I tell OC4J NOT to use internal JMS Aqueue queues but use other JMS product?
