GTK font scaling with bitmap fonts

I wish to use GohuFont, a bitmap font, for my GTK windows which has embedded 11pt and 14pt sizes. These usually work fine but in cases where applications attempt to draw fonts larger than 14pt it uses some TTF font instead. Is it possible to change the font that GTK defaults to to something different, e.g. GohuFont at 14pt, bold?
The other solution I can think of would be to spoof larger fonts by just copying the file for the 14pt font and modifying its header to be read as 16pt or something; I've found programs to modify the characters themselves but not one that'll let me change what size the font is "read" as.

Nah. I doubt you've played hard enough with the multitude of settings that Infinality provides. I have heard your argument before, and it's *always* by people who show extremely little evidence of what they've actually tried, so it always seems to be laziness of the tweaker rather than something lacking in Infinality.
E.g. just this one setting has a huge effect, with different values (it's a mirror-image, so has 3 values to tweak):
export INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS="14 20 32 20 14"
If your eyes are giving you discomfort, then you really need to check with an optician, and/or get a better screen, purely for the sake of your health.

  • GTK font size

    I use KDE 3.5.8 and after upgrading to xorg 7.3 all my video modes and font sizes went nuts. That's solved now, but GTK apps still display a tiny font.
    If I recall correctly, in previous KDE versions, kcontrol had an option to apply font preferences to Qt and GTK apps, but I can't find it now. I fixed the Qt ones with "qtconfig", does something similar exist for GTK? How can I increase size font beyond "microscopic almost invisible"?

    All you need to do is create a couple text files. a .gtkrc and a .gtkrc-2.0 file under /home/username to manipulate the font and size.

  • Scaling Embedded Bitmaps in Illustrator files.

    Hi
    At the moment, if I am supplied AI files with embedded Bitmaps (or linked) I have to find the source file, rebuild the image and parent to the rest of the artwork if I want to scale it up.
    I can't just scale up in Illustrator as that makes things too big for AE to work with.
    So
    I was wondering if there was a way to access Illustrator's scaling from within AE.
    For instance, within a 1024x576 image there is a small bitmapped photo.
    In Illustrator, the original bitmap has been scaled to 12%
    Say I want to zoom in on that part of the image
    If I scale the whole image up in AI it references the original bitmap, so I can scale it back up to 100%
    But if it is in AE at 1024x576 I cannot.
    Continuous rasterisation treats the whole things as original sized vector.
    I can't just make a big AI file as I would now have a 10240x5760 px AI file which would give me out of memory errors,
    (because AE still won't only render what is in the window but has to do the whole layer. Is anyone from Nothing Real now at Adobe?)
    Maybe certain PDFs would work?
    Am basically trying to work out a better workflow
    designers will always use bitmaps (and bitmap effects!) in AI and think I can zoom into them.
    Even at 100% weird flickering errors occur with bitmaps in AI files so I usually have to reuse and parent anyway.

    Nope. Would be nice, but can't be doen ATM. And a plain PDF is no use, either, as it may make actually things worse by flattening things that could be vector into bitmap data or slicing up images into separate tiles....

  • Select count from large fact tables with bitmap indexes on them

    Hi..
    I have several large fact tables with bitmap indexes on them, and when I do a select count from these tables, I get a different result than when I do a select count, column one from the table, group by column one. I don't have any null values in these columns. Is there a patch or a one-off that can rectify this.
    Thx

    You may have corruption in the index if the queries ...
    Select /*+ full(t) */ count(*) from my_table t
    ... and ...
    Select /*+ index_combine(t my_index) */ count(*) from my_table t;
    ... give different results.
    Look at metalink for patches, and in the meantime drop-and-recreate the indexes or make them unusable then rebuild them.

  • How does OWB deal with bitmap indexes when inserting?

    How does OWB 9.2 deal with bitmap indexes on a fact table when records are inserted from a staging table? It seems to me that they are left on the table, while in the 9i Server manuals it says that one should not perform heavy DML in this case, because this slows down the inserts considerably and the indexes can get bloated. Should one define a premapping and postmapping process for removal and recreation of the bitmap indexes?
    How handles OWB bitmap indexes in case of PEL and what action should one take then?
    Jaap.

    Hai Japp,
    It depends on the volume of the data.
    The best way is drop index in pre mapping process and recreate it in post mapping process.
    You need to use EXECUTE IMMEDIATE command in the procedure to create or drop indexes.
    e.g:
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE BITMAP INDEX INDX_BI_TABLE ON TABLE_NAME(COL_NAME)'

  • Scaling with scale9Grid

    scaling with scale9Grid
    Hey guys,
    I'm having more of a math problem than an AS problem ...
    I have a moiveclip which contains a movie clip of a rectangle picture frame image which is scale9grid enabled (i have the grid staring at the inner corners) and the other a clip that will contain a loaded jpeg image.
    Now the jpeg image is going to be of varying sizes (portrait/ landscape) and on top of that I'm going to be reducing the size a bit...probably about at a 200px width in proportion.
    My problem is having to scale the scale9grid proportionally in ratio to the image's new size.
    My first issue is whether or not i should use the scaleX =.5 (so much easy) or scale the width = width/2; the second is doing the conversion...
    can someone get me started with an explanation?
    my maths is no good...

    WEll I think I did...hopefully...this is what I did
    var w = (300 / image.width)*100;
                image.scaleX = w/ 100;
                image.scaleY = w/ 100;
                pictureBorder.scaleX = pictureBorder.scaleY = 1;
                var sw = (image.width / (pictureBorder.width - 23))*100;
                var sh = (image.height / (pictureBorder.height + 23))*100;
                var g = (pictureBorder.width - 23)/ 100;
                var g2 = (pictureBorder.height - 23)/ 100;
                //pictureBorder.width = image.width + 44;
                //pictureBorder.height = image.height + 22;
                pictureBorder.scaleX = 1;
                pictureBorder.scaleY = 1;
                pictureBorder.scaleX = sw/ 100 + g/100;
                pictureBorder.scaleY = sh/ 100 + g2/100;
                maskMc.width = pictureBorder.width;
                maskMc.height = pictureBorder.height - 23;
    Its still a bit off and I'm not sure why
    this is and image of the picture frame...i put the slicing at the outer corner edges where they intersect rather than on the inner rectangle where the picture would be....
    Its the closest I got

  • Air for ios optimization with bitmap break apart

    Hi,
    I'm developing an ios game with Flash CS5.5, and tries to optimize it as much as possible. I use bitmaps and GPU, but there is one thing I haven't found an answer to. I'd like to fill a background with bitmap tiles. An easy way (for me) to achieve this, is to just break apart the bitmap tile and use the eyedropper tool to fill out the desired background area, but I believe this turns the bitmap into a shape. Do you know if this would be bad when it comes to optimizing? Should I instead lay out the tiles side by side without breaking them apart?

    I did check for that, and rechecked just now, and they're all unscaled.  Plus, the code shows the correct dimensions and the issue doesn't exist on the computer - screenshots from the computer and the ipad don't match.  It's only the ipad that's showing the distortion.
    There must be something wrong with the fla or the ipa.  I created a new fla and tested the same code with just one image and there's no distortion.  I'll try creating a new fla.
    Thanks!

  • Exporting to PNG, Stroke Weight not Scaling with Export Scale

    Hi there
    I am having some issues exporting illustrator documents to multiple sizes of PNG.
    I am actually scripting this, but the issue seems to be more general - hence the posting here.
    If you export a PNG through the web and devices tool:
    File->Save for Web & Devices
    And you scale the image by 50%, the line weight does not seem to be scaled with the export scale.
    In Illustrator->Preferences->General I have Scale Strokes and Effects ticked.
    This problem is also apparent when scaling a scripted PNG export through the ExportOptionsPNG24 class.
    Is there anything I am missing please - or does anyone know of workarounds?
    Thank you

    Thanks for looking into it Kurt.
    I can't post the illustrator file in question to the forum.
    And, you are right, when I aim to make a demo file from scratch I can't reproduce the problem either.
    I am having this difficulty on multiple files though, and they are all quite complex.
    I will aim to try and make a file that shows the problem.
    The files in question may have symbols that were created in much earlier versions of Illustrator.
    I'm not sure if that could do it.
    The sequence above shows the output as I export via script to successively smaller scales.
    This is by setting the horizontalScale and verticalScale in ExportOptionsPNG24.
    I see the same results if scaling in Save for Web & Devices.

  • URxvt poor performance with Bitmap fonts

    I'm trying to use a bitmap font with URxvt terminal and I find the performance is terrible after. If i use an XFT font it works perfect. When I set a bitmap font I can see the screen redraw while scrolling through vim and if another terminal is outputting lots of data the other terminals will slow to a crawl. Also when the terminal gains focus I will see a flicker occur as it redraws the text.
    I tried using XTerm and it does not experience this problem at all. It only seems to be with URXvt that this problem occurs. I've tried several different bitmap fonts and it's the same for all of them. Again XFT works fine.
    Any ideas?

    I don't use testing, but have cairo-xcb installed from AUR, which is version 1.12.0-1. I just tried to replace it with the package in testing, but this did not have any effect. Downgrading cairo-xcb gives problems because of the libpng14 stuff. I will look for the source of a previous version and build it, to see if this is the problem.
    edit...
    You are right, the problem is cairo. I rebuild and installed cairo-xcb 1.10.2 and gvim was as quick as it used to be. When I upgrade it again it slows down.

  • Firefox/OpenOffice ignores GTK font settings

    I know that this issue has been talked about a lot in the forums and I did do a forum search and go through the suggestions but none of them (with the exception of changing userChrome.css for firefox) has had any effect.
    Basically, firefox and openoffice will both accept GTK theming with the exception of the fonts.  I know that editing userChrome.css can "fix" the problem for firefox.  I don't know whether that there is a similar fix for openoffice.
    What I want to know is:
    - Are there any system wide changes I can make to force both firefox and openoffice to obey GTK?
    - In the absence of the above, is there a way to change OO GUI styles in a way similar to changing userChrome.css for firefox?

    No, there isn't any problem there.
    Firefox can't accept any font hinting than slight.
    It's another unexplained problem.
    you're right, my mistake.
    i wanted to say that you'll have to edit /etc/fonts/conf.d/ meaning that you'll have to symlink the one or other config file from /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ there.
    but if i change the ~/.fonts.conf, ff certainly changes his rendering behavior, but i'm afraid i cannot make it out what it's exactly changing

  • Firefox does not inherit GTK+ font settings

    The Nvidia drivers for the GTX 660ti gpu seem to be breaking the font rendering in Firefox' UI. I doubt this issue can be resolved here but in the meantime if anyone is experiencing the same problems their input would be valuable.

    I answered what I thought was the problem in the .gtkrc-2.0 file; you could have just quietly said it is not the solution in your case, showing what you have already in the file. No need to use an unpleasant tone.
    the best I can do for now is cross my fingers and hope for a driver update to fix it
    It would be better to file a bug report at the nvidia driver site, and at Mozilla bug report site, as you told that it concerns only firefox.
    I edited it to [fixed] so people would skim over it
    But those seeing the thread title could think that it provides a real fix, which it does not.
    I will now leave you with your hope for a satisfying fix from more qualified guys than me.
    Bye.
    Sorry about that, I've spent roughly 5 hours non stop trying to fix this issue, the most recent one leading me to believe the issue is not with Pango either. I hate to be walking on eggs so I hope you'll understand I did not mean to be condescending at all.

  • Problems with displaying text from gtk+-2.0 with Cairo

    I've got a 64-bit app that uses gtk+-2.0 (2.8.17 with Cairo). I had to build my own libraries since the gtk+-2.0 libraries Solaris 10 ships with is 32-bit only (and does not contain Cairo support). The app is statically linked so that our customers don't have to do any more than just install the app.
    I've got a customer who's using a Sun Ray 2fs to run our app from a Sun Ray server. The problem is that none of the text in the UI is readable (including the menubar). He sent a screenshot and I can tell it's rendering the glyphs, just not correctly. The best way of describing the text rendering problem is to take a bitmap of antialised text drawn with a black pen color. Now remove all non solid black pixels. You only see pieces of the glyphs (typically, just the vertical and horizontal parts).
    We don't have a Sun Ray client to test with but for testing purposes, I installed our app on freshly built Solaris 10 (5/09) and Open Solaris systems with no modifications to the virgin systems. I could run our app on both Solaris systems and display the app on a remote X display just fine. I asked the customer to try a real X display and he ran X-Win32 on a Windows XP guest using VirtualBox on the Sun Ray server and our app appeared just fine on his Sun Ray client. I told him if our app displays just fine on a real X display, then the problem must be with the Sun Ray server.
    Has anyone encountered this problem? I'm going to try building the latest gtk+-2.0 libraries but I'm not convinced it's going to do any good. I don't think it's a Fontconfig configuration problem because our app worked out of the box on freshly installed systems (unless perhaps Sun has made changes to /etc/fonts/fonts.conf since the version on his system versus ours).
    PS. We actually need the Cairo graphics support. It just happens that the version of Pango that's in 2.8 (and all versions of gtk+-2.0 since) also uses it for text rendering in the widgets.

  • Word docs with bitmap drawings converted to grayscale

    I'm still using Acrobat/Distiller 5 on Windows 2000 Pro to prepare press ready PDFs of word 2000 docs with black & white line drawings (600 dpi bitmaps). I've always used the default "Press" job option file and simply printed to the distiller printer that is installed with Acrobat. Been doing this without any problems for years. I had some computer problems recently and had to change to a different machine. Now when I print, the resulting PDFs have those 600 dpi bitmaps converted to grayscale images. I've tried every setting I can think of to make it go away. Like I said, I've never had to change anything from the default job options file. I've tried printing the postscript to a file, then distilling, always the same. BTW, fonts look good. I know there is a solution because this same thing popped up 2 or 3 years ago and it got solved then, but I can't figure it out this time. Nothing has changed wth the docs, but a new install of Acrobat on different hardware, same OS. Help please -deadline looming.
    Thanks, Dave

    To all those having trouble converting documents to pdfs, I did some research and found a work around.
    Go to File and choose Save & Send. Then choose Create PDF/XPS document. Click the Create button. PDF is generated.

  • Flex Mobile project scaling with Retina display iPad (3rd gen).

    Adobe et al,
    With the new iPad 3 we now have a ton more pixels to utilize. I'm familiar with and have already successfully tested the AIR 3.1+ commandline compiler option (-platformsdk) to get Retina display on the new iPad. In ActionScript mobile projects the content is rendered beautifully on the new iPad. But with Flex Mobile projects, something is happening that causes it to render incorrectly. It's retina display alright, but the size is way too small.
    Below is an image WITHOUT the -platformsdk build tag, that causes the app to be pixel doubled to fit on the new iPad:
    Notice that it's scaled proportionally, even though the text and components are slightly pixelated. Not a big deal, but noticeable on the device.
    This image is taken with the app rendering in Retina display (setting the -platformsdk pointing to iOS 5.1 SDK):
    As you can see, the text/components are rendered really clear, but the scale is way off. Obviously it's getting the width of 2048x1536 from the device, but it's way too small.
    How do I fix this? I've tried changing the applicationDPI, but it doesn't fix it. Setting a width/height of 1024x768 does nothing either. It seems we need to overrride a behavior that causes it to fit everything in so small.
    A little help?
    Thanks,
    iBrent

    Alright, kevinkorngut's answer was the right one. It appears that even though AIR 3.x can render high resolution apps, it still returns the incorrect DPI for the new iPad. In a Flex Mobile project you have to override the DPI using the method mentioned above.
    Here are the results I got:
    Using the runtimeDPIProvider property on the TabViewApplication tag (works for any of the three project types) I created a class that extends RuntimeDPIProvider. To detect which iPad I was on, I used the following code:
    override public function get runtimeDPI():Number
         var os:String = Capabilities.os;
         if(os.indexOf("iPad") != -1)
              if(Capabilities.screenResolutionX > 2000 || Capabilities.screenResolutionY > 2000)
                   return DPIClassification.DPI_320;
              } else {
                   return DPIClassification.DPI_160;
         } else {
              return Capabilities.screenDPI;
    I'm returning a DPI of 320 as this gives the best result that matches the proportions of the device. In other words, even though the iPad DPI is 264, setting the app to 320 gives the correct size at the new Retina display.
    In order for this to work, you must compile the app with the -platformsdk flag pointing to iOS 5.1 SDK, and currently that means you need a Mac running Lion with Xcode 4.3.1. Here's the adt command I used:
    adt -package -target ipa-test -storetype pkcs12 -keystore ~/Desktop/iOS_DevCert.p12 -provisioning-profile ~/Desktop/iOS_DevProfile.mobileprovision newiPadTest.ipa newiPadTest-app.xml newiPadTest.swf -platformsdk /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPh oneOS5.1.sdk
    Also, the -app.xml descriptor file must have the <requestedDisplayResolution>high</requestedDisplayResolution> within the <iPhone> tags.
    Thanks everyone for their replies!
