Gutting a iMac G4 and using Parts in Desktop G3

I am currently working on a iMac G4 with a bad Logic board(Motherboard), so I am currently gutting it to upgrade a Desktop G3. I've already added the Hard disk and the Ram, I tried switching the dvd-r(the G3 only has a dvd/cd-rw), but the G3 will not recognize the drive, I am assuming the drive is bad as well, but I didn't know if there was something i need to do to the G3 to make it work?
Also wanted to know if it was possible to switch the processors? the G3 is only a 400 Mhz and the iMac G4 is a 800Mhz. I rarely work with apples so i'm not sure if the sockets are the same, and not even sure if they are compatible.
I also realize that this next question is a not really possible, but I have to ask just to make sure. Is there any way to take the LCD screen of the iMac and use it as a second monitor. I realize i would propable need the logic board to do this but want to know if anyone knows of any mods.
Is there anything else that I would be able to gut out of the iMac and use for the G4?
Thanks Sparks_Lit

Personally I would get a new board for the G4 than scrap it. If no 3rd party source for a board is found then OK scrap it. Back to G3 box.
1. Check the jumper. There are 3 states; master, slave, cable select. Compare to drive you took out. If it is different change it. If it is the same? Don't know new to me.
2. My 15" flat panel is driven by gforce2 MX. Since I don't have your G3 I'll do a thought experiment.
Put a gforce card in a jig for easy soldering.
HALT - experiment over because it requires blowing the next 4 hrs studying and google'ing.
good luck on display and I'll check-in on drive part of this.

  • Possible to gut a Mac G5 and use it as a pc?

Hi everyone, I know people ask these types of questions all the time, but I am wondering if it would be possible to gut my G5 and use its hdd, ram, etc. and house a new mobo/cpu in the G5's case? With black friday coming I was thinking about building a PC when I realized I have an old G5 that has a great case and ram-- so, if I could just keep the case and ram and hdd, it would save me a ton of money. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Dom,
    Yes indeed, it's been done...

The RAM would depend on which Mobo you get, but the Drive should work.

  • I am puzzled by iMac(Intel ?).  I am running an iMac 24 and use Mac:Office 2008.  After having downloaded my Os X LION upgrade, I am suddenly unable to SAVE (and thus alter) my Excel quotations.  This is a major issue for a salesman.  Can anybody help me

I am puzzled by the meaning of iMac (Intel) as I use an iMac 2 period.  I am running Mac : Office 2004 and do all my quotations in Excel.  After upgrading to OS X LION,  I am suddenly unable to SAVE my spreadsheets.  As a salesman whose quotations need frequent updating,  my situation is perilous to say the least.  Can anyone help me ?

Office for Mac 2004 is NOT compatible with Lion. It must be upgraded to Office for Mac 2008 or 2011, once you have upgraded the files will be accessable. Office for Mac 2004 is written for old PPC (Power PC) based machines. Beginning with Lion support for PPC based apps has been dropped.

  • Pros Cons - iMac vs MBP (used as a desktop)

New Apple convert here. I've been searching forums for days but haven't yet found up-to-date answers to my questions. If you have some time, please continue reading! :-)
I just bougt the new iPad Air--yay! It'll probably never leave my side.
I also just bought a MBP retina, late 2013, 8GB ram, 2.4 GHz i5, 256 flash storage to replace our dying Dell desktop.
My background and estimated usage: I'm a homeschooling mom and also a writer/blogger. I am a huge content consumer and just getting into more content creation as I learn more about video and photo editing and web design. Not a professional photographer or videographer by any means, but a heavy Internet user with strong curiousity about everything a Mac is capable of. And don't forget I'll be relying heavily on our computers as we homeschool our children.
That all being said, here's my dilemma:
Should I buy a maxed out iMac to future proof for our family for a long as possible OR should I keep the MBP with mediocre specs and buy a cheap external display so that I can have that feeling of a desktop with more screen real estate that I already miss?
    Some notes:
Yes, I realize the main difference is portability and that an iMac could be configured to have better specs for less $$ than a laptop.
I love the idea of portability, but in reality I feel like if I had an external display I'd mainly use the laptop as a desktop. (I originally bought a Thunderbolt display but returned because it was very expensive and I anticipate an upgrade from Apple in the future.)
I also tend to overestimate my future usage. I could spend the next 5 years just checking Facebook, or I really could get into graphic design and video editing, so I'm not sure if I should just go entry-level or if I should max out the specs to future proof our investment. Money is a huge factor, but if we're going to do this, we want to do it right.
Questions about iMac vs using a MBP as a desktop:
1.Since having my MBP for the last few weeks, I feel like I'm charging it constantly. At least twice a day. Is this normal? And is it a reason to get an iMac?
    2. Will using a MBP so heavily and hooked up to an external display for long periods of time have any negative effect on its battery or life or its screen since the MBP lid will be closed and the screen subjected to more heat?
    3. Suggestions for a decent but inexpensive monitor to use if we end up keeping the MBP?
    4. Any other reasons I haven't considered as to whether a desktop or a laptop + display would be better for my situation?
    5. When plugged into an external display, does the MBP run off the battery or does it switch to AC power without affecting the battery?
    6. For my suggested use, should I keep the somewhat baseline specs of the MBP that I already have, or should I upgrade everything (just in case)?
    7. Or, should I get the best iMac I can afford and if I ever feel like I really need a laptop, I can always buy a cheap one or save for another MBP?
As long as there are no real cons to using the MBP with an external display and that it can take heavy but basic usage day in and out without shortening it's life, I'm leaning toward keeping the MBP and buying a cheap external display until Apple updates the Thunderbolt display. I just feel like if I ever *want* to work in another room or outside the house, I'm going to appreciate having a laptop that functions as both laptop and desktop.
I'd appreciate any feedback. I know this was ridiculously long, but I need help from those who know! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It seems that you have this pretty well thought out, the iMac does have more "power" and a larger display, etc...
    The MBP has the portability.
It really depends on how much you need to be mobile with it, it sounds as though it would be used more like a desktop than "I have to have my computer with me" kind of thing. Video and graphics will be easier to deal with on the iMac, no battery to consider, will probably run considerably cooler than a portable  in clamshell mode, no external monitior to deal with...
Problem is you can't "grab and go".
You ned to really consider how it will be used the most, the iMac will give more bang for the buck, if having to take it with is not the overriding concern.
You can also use a cheaper portable/iPad for those occasions that you need to have a device with you.
    A decision for you make.
    All the Best
I'm sure others will chime in as well

  • Donwloading a .rar app and using it without desktop manager.

Not sure if this is even possible.  I have V1.6.0.22 for FB for Blackberry and need to use that on my Tour, because I am on T-Mobile and the newest FB for Blackberry does not work.  I am out of town and do not have the cable to usb cable to use desktop manager.  Is there another way to get this app (which is in the form of a .rar file) to my Blackberry and installed?  If need be, I can wait until Monday when I get back home to my usb to Blackberry, but thought there might be another way to get this app installed.  I have a long meeting tomorrow and Facebook for BB would really pull me through it

Sean, you can download that version .22 via OTA here:

  • Stop the iMac screen while using an external monitor.

I succeeded to play an .avi file in full screen on my 32" samsung lcd...but i would like to stop the iMac monitor while watching the avi. If i choose to stop the iMac monitor also the tv screen became black, and also if i start a screensaver on the iMac this will also appear on the lcd tv evenif i set up the external monitor as an extension of the desktop and not as a duplicate. There's a solution?
Tnx for the answers and sorry for my poor english

That one as well will dim both displays.
I have played around with this off and on for over a year now. The best that I have come up with is in this [Apple Discussion Thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5587803#5587803]
Sense then I have also found a way to dim the menu bar, but it was a little buggy to use all the time called [MenuShade|http://macapper.com/2007/10/17/menushade-dim-your-menu-bar>
Simply hide everything on the desktop as best you can and use a black desktop or photo image.

  • Can I use part of the TC as a general external HD

My Mac Mini is out of HD space. Can I get a TC and use part of it for backups and part as an external HD for things I don't need to have on the Mini all the time?

It is better not to, as the TC has no means to backup data on the disk.. Time Machine cannot backup a network drive. Much better to get a USB and better still a FW hdd and plug it straight into the Mini.. and also good to upgrade the hdd in the mini...!!

  • Can I use part of my 3TB as a network drive.

Time Machine uses my entire 3 TB for backup.  is there a way to partition the 3Tb and use part as a network drive?

No, you cannot partition a TC.
See Pondini about how to use data on a TC.

  • How to set Updates with 11.3 when using Apple Remote Desktop for installation?

So for all pre-11.3 versions of Flash Player on OSX, I have just pulled out the "Adobe Flash Player.pkg" installer package from the installer .dmg and used Apple Remote Desktop to deploy Flash to the Macs I manage.
However, when doing that with Flash 11.3, this leaves the "Updates" setting in the Flash Player System Preference set to "Notify me to install updates".
I'd like to push something that would set this to "Allow Adobe to install updates".
Is there a way to modify the .pkg installer to have the System Preference set to that value (or push/copy some other .plist file to the clients to have that setting enabled?)
    Thanks!

I poked around a bit and the file seems to be:
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg
I'd like to get some confirmation from Adobe that this is the correct file to push, though (it seems like it as it only contains this):
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1

  • Opening a port on Airport in order to use microsoft remote desktop

I have Microsoft Remote Desktop connection installed on my MacBook and I am able to connect to my company's VPN and use the remote desktop when I am using another wireless network but I am not able to connect at home using my Airport extreme. When I try to connect from home I receive the following warning: "You were disconnected from the Windows-based computer because of network problems. Verify that your network and Internet connections are working, and then try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer." I know all my settings for the VPN and Remote Desktop are correct because I can log on elsewhere. Someone mentioned that I may need to open/forward a port on my router in order for it to work. Does anyone have any information or know where I could find information that would be helpful??
    Thanks,
    Erin

This is from Apple documentation regarding their version of port forwarding.
AirPort Extreme uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to share a single IP address with the computers that join the AirPort Extreme network. To provide Internet access to several computers with one IP address, NAT assigns private IP addresses to each computer on the AirPort Extreme network, and then matches these addresses with port numbers. The wireless device creates a port-to-private IP address table entry when a computer on your AirPort (private) network sends a request for information to the Internet.
If you are using a web, AppleShare, or FTP server on your AirPort Extreme network, other computers initiate communication with your server. Because the Apple wireless device has no table entries for these requests, it has no way of directing the information to the appropriate computer on your AirPort network.
To ensure that requests are properly routed to your web, AppleShare, or FTP server, you need to establish a permanent IP address for your server and provide inbound port mapping information to your Apple wireless device.
To set up inbound port mapping:
    1. Open AirPort Utility, select your wireless device, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the device icon to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the password if necessary.
    2. Click the Advanced button, and then click Port Mapping.
    3. Click the Add button and choose a service, such as Personal File Sharing, from the Service pop-up menu.
Type any additional information you need in the text fields.
To use port mapping, you must configure TCP/IP manually on the computer that is
running the web, AppleShare, or FTP server. You can also set up a computer as a default host to establish a permanent IP address for the computer and provide inbound port mapping information to the AirPort Extreme Base Station or AirPort Express. This is sometimes known as a DMZ and is useful when playing some network games or videoconferencing.
To set up a default host:
    1. Open AirPort Utility, select your wireless device, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the device icon to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the password if necessary.
    2. Click the Internet button, and then click NAT.
    3. Select the “Enable Default Host at” checkbox. The default IP address is 10.0.1.253.
    4. Enter the same IP address on the host computer.
3389 is the port needed for Windows Remote Desktop.

  • Can i hook up my Macbook unibody to my iMac (2007 model), and use them as one computer ?

I have an iMac 20" which i bought in 2007. Then in nov 2009 i bought a white macbook unibody. I've got ableton Live running on both computers and what i want to do is, use my iMac as a main computer and my macbook as a support computer. I have a few questions.
    1) Can i upgrade the processor of my iMac ?
    2) Can i use my Macbook as a second screen ?
    3) Will the upgraded processor help in the performance of the running sofwares ?
    Please help!
    Billz270

    1) No. The iMac's processor is part of the logic board and cannot be replaced with a different one.
    2) No. The MacBook does not have video in capability.
    3) It might, but see answer 1.
    Best of luck.

  • I am having trouble installing and using remote desktop client and admin on the same imac.  I need help?

Can you give me a step by step on getting the client and the admin part of remote desktop to work?  I am new to this and I need for remote desktop to work to install the Faronics Deepfreeze enterprise console on the new imac in office.  The OSx version is 10.8.3  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Also, when I go to install the admin, it says that the remote desktop client is not updated and I cant get mac app store to show any updates.  May be doing something wrong.

This is what I usualy do to setup ARDclient on a client computer.
    on the client computer
go to menu bar (white bar at top of the screen)
    click on the apple menu
    chose system preferences
    click show all button
    click Users & Groups
    click the lock to unlock
click + to create a new account
    chose new account: type "administrator"
name the user some thing applicable like "ARDuser"
    set a secure password
    click create account
    click show all button
    click sharing
set the computer name to some thing descritpive that identifies the computer
    check remote login
    click on remote login
set allow access for: "only these users"
    click the +
chose the ARDuser from the list
    click select
    check remote management
    click on remote management
set allow access to "only these users"
    click the +
select the ARDuser from the list
    click select
check: observe, control, genereate reports, open & quite applications, delete and replace items, start text chat or send messages, restart & shutdown, copy items
    click ok
click the lock to lock system preferences
    click show all
    quite system preferences
At this point you should be able to connect to the client using Apple Remote Desktop using the ARDuser setup above. Make sure the client and the ARD computer are on the same network the same way. IE both on ethernet or both on wifi. On the same internet conenction, if your were trying to conenct to a client over the internet there is more involved.
    on the ard computer:
    open apple remote desktop
from the left column select discover
make sure the list is set to bonjour
the client computer should show up on the list, with the name set above
select the client from the list
    click control
you will be prompted for the user/pass to log into the computer. that's the ARDuser setup in the steps above.

how do I set up my Imac to allow using both my computer speakers and a Bose SoundLink system as outputs at the same time.  I can use one or the other, but not both.  From systems Preferences I must select one or the other.  I want both to work all the time.

    Hi,
I would recommend you to use 0FI_AP_4 rather using both, particularly for many reasons -
    1. DS: 0FI_AP_4  replaces DataSource 0FI_AP_3 and still uses the same extraction structure. For more details refer to the OSS note 410797.
    2. You can run the 0FI_AP_4 independent of any other FI datasources like 0FI_AR_4 and 0FI_GL_4 or even 0FI_GL_14. For more details refer to the OSS note: 551044.
    3. Map the 0FI_AP_4 to DSO: 0FIAP_O03 (or create a Z one as per your requirement).
    4. Load the same to a InfoCube (0FIAP_C03).
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

OK, it now sort of works. A couple of problems here:
After updating IOS, Safari iCloud was "automatically" switched off
Switching it on had no effect
resetting my iPad automatically switched off safari iCloud again
after switching it back on, it said "turning off safari data"
switched it off and on again, now it said : "turning on safari data" and the sync worked
    On IOS 7 no problems
The bookmarks not being displayed was because after pressing the book icon, it defaulted to showing the history and I had to press "Back" to get to the other options
