H.264 frame size limit?

I'm trying to compress HD 1080/24p footage in Compressor 2.0.1, and the h.264 dialog box limits me to a max frame size of 720. Why no 1080? I can do 1080 MPEG-2. Is there a way around this?
Thanks!

Wellcome to the forum!
the h.264 dialog box limits me to a max frame size of 720
Are you trying to encode to H.264 for HD DVD or H.264 QuickTime Movie?
Encoding H.264 as Quicktime Movie lets you gice your full custom frame size (go to Geometry icon), 1080 pixel aspect ratio, etc.
Take any of the existing Web Download or Streaming (QT7), make a copy and change the Geometry settings as you want.
Hope it helps!

  • Sequence Settings Frame Size, LIMIT?

I want to export a sequence that's 1080x5760. Essentially 3 1080p screens right next to each other. Every time I enter this custom setting into the frame size of my sequence, I get a 4000 limit for both height and width. Shouldn't FCP be able to handle this size? Is it limited by my GPU?

FCP currently does not support anything over 4K.

  • Compression: what's right frame size for anamorphic film using H.264 Lan?

i have an anamorphic (16:9) 25 minute film i want to export using Compression's H.264 Lan option (for web-posting purposes). What settings do I need for the frame size to keep it at its original proportions? i thought that 720 x 405 would do the trick, but it is slightly off, makes some of the images rather oval.
    thanks much....

    x & patrick,
thanks for your help & desire for further clarification.
i am dealing with a sequence composed largely of footage from a panasonic pv-gs500 using the widescreen mode. i don't know if it's "true" anamorphic or 16:9, but it's on an anamorphic timeline and looks just fine there.
i experimented all nite last nite trying to get the right ratio for the compression type i mentioned. it looks like i finally succeeded using 740 x 416. i have no idea WHY this works, but when viewing the final exported product, it looks pretty perfect. i think it cuts off a teeny tiny bit of the height, not even noticeable.
any explanation of WHY this ratio works would be welcome, to help along my understanding....

  • Is there a size limit of the mp4 transfer to Ipod?

Hi, i have converted a video and the size is 640x480. It worked just fine for itune and quicktime player, but when i start to transfer it to my ipod video. It declines my mp4 video and said it's different format. Again i did the same thing and converted the same video to size 320x240. This time the ipod accepted it. So i wanted to know is there a size limit to the ipod??

The maximum resolution for an MPEG-4 file is 480x480.
The maximum resolution for an H.264 file is 320x240.
    From the iPod Tech Specs:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

  • H.264 file size

I have an Aiptek GoHD camcorder. (I thought I would work with this first before jumping into a HDD 1080 camcorder later this year) The quality of the video is remarkably good given the price of the device. The compression format is H.264 MPEG-4 at 1280 by 720. The file sizes are surprisingly svelte at about 25Mbyte per minute. I can take the SD card out of the camera, place it in my card reader and transfer it to my mac pro as .mov files that I can then import into iMovie08 without a problem. It converts them to Appple Intermediat Codec for editing purposes which of course balloons the file size. When I export the movie using quicktime, I am using the following settings:
    Size: 1280x720
    Compression type: H.264
    Frame rate: Current
Key frames: Every 24 (Frame reordering check box selected)
Compressor quality : Medium (Faster encode check box selected)
    Data Rate:: Automatic
This results in final file sizes that remain in the range of 100Mbytes per minute (or larger!)in spite of using the "medium" quality. I am not adding any effects except for a few titles. I am pretty frugal about what I want to record with the camcorder. All I really want to do is import 5-10 clips (of about 1-3 minutes in duration each) into iMovie, chain them together beginning to end and export it back to the hard drive as one movie in the same format in which the .mov files were originally recorded. My questions are:
Is the inefficent encoding a result of some setting that I have chosen incorrectly?
Is the inefficient encoding just a limitation of iMovie and would I get more efficient encoding if I went to FCE4? (I would rather not have to pony up for the pro version of Final Cut to get the "compressor" function but would consider it if I knew it would do the trick)
Would I be better off getting a hardware based encoder for the Mac (if such a creature exists) since the hardware based encoder for the Aiptek does such a nice job?
    I appreciate any help!
    Tom

Is the inefficent encoding a result of some setting that I have chosen incorrectly?
If by your question you are referring the the difference between source data rate and final target data rate, the you problem is in your settings. File size s directly proportional to your total combined data rate per unit of time. Selecting an "Automatic" video data rate tells QT to use as high a data rate as is it thinks is necessary. You can, instead, simply limit your final total combined data rate (i.e., Audio + Video) to that of your source or approximately 25 MB/M.

  • Reduced frame size results in increased file size (?!)

    Hello
I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
I exported from FinalCut into a QuickTime file, the file size is 485MB.
Then I used QuickTIme Pro to change the movie into the above frame size, and add a letter box.
The resulting file is over 6GB in files size! How can this be? I used no compression and these settings: no compression, millions of colours, Best Quality, Apple Lossless sound, 48.000MHz, Mono.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash).
Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.

I am trying to decrease the resolution of my HDV video to a smaller size, to put in on Viddler. The format there apparently is width="437" height="370".
According to a Viddler "staff" member on their forum, the player is 545x408. Therefore I would try one of the following:
544x408 (4:3 aspect) 544x306 (16:9 aspect) (closest match disregarding macro blocks)
    512x384 (4:3 aspect) 512x288 (16:9 aspect) (long file up-scaling macro-blocked)
    576x432 (4:3 aspect) 576x324 (16:9 aspect) (short file down-scaling macro-blocked)
I exported from FinalCut into a QuickTime file, the file size is 485MB. Then I used QuickTIme Pro to change the movie into the above frame size, and add a letter box. To me, a "QuickTime file" is anything you can stuff into an MOV file container, or a more loose definition, anything compatible with the QT Player and currently installed QT components. With regard to going from 485 MBs to 6 GBs, your file size is directly related to the total (audio + video) data rate used for compression. Not compressing a video makes it bigger while the higher the compression, the smaller the file.
The reason for not compressing is that Viddler will compress on its servers (into Flash). Any hints? I must stay under 500MB to upload the file to Viddler.
Since the target for the Flash target conversion is 448 kbps (400 kbps video + 48 kbps audio), the same staff member recommended H.264 multi-pass video compression at 768 kbps and AAC mono audio compression at 64 kbps with a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. Splitting the difference between the staff recommendation and your apparent worry about quality loss during re-compression, I would suggest this as a maximum level of compression and likely try a total data rate in the 1500-1600 kbps range which should yield something on the order of 12.25 MBs/min for output for initial tests. You can, of course adjust rates up or down depending on the duration of your file upload in order to meet the 500 MB limit and satisfy quality considerations.

  • LabView RT FTP file size limit

I have created a few very large AVI video clips on my PXIe-8135RT (LabView RT 2014).  When i try to download these from the controller's drive to a host laptop (Windows 7) with FileZilla, the transfer stops at 1GB (The file size is actually 10GB).
What's going on?  The file appears to be created correctly and I can even use AVI2 Open and AVI2 Get Info to see that the video file contains the frames I stored.  Reading up about LVRT, there is nothing but older information which claim the file size limit is 4GB, yet the file was created at 10GB using the AVI2 VIs.
    Thanks,
    Robert

As usual, the answer was staring me right in the face.  FileZilla was reporting the size in an odd manner and the file was actually 1GB.  The vi I used was failing.  After fixing it, it failed at 2GB with error -1074395965 (AVI max file size reached).

  • MPEG2 frame size areas greyed out  :(

I need to take a QuickTime file that was rendered at 864x486 and make an MPEG2 out of it to playback on a PC onto a plasma screen. However, every MPEG2 I create in Compressor changes my frame size to 720x480. The frame size controls are greyed out and will not let me change this. I am not creating a DVD, but I DO need to create an MPEG2. What am I doing wrong?!? I've read different posts on here that say to duplicate the setting so you're not changing the original, and I've done that. Nothing seems to work.

As Silal mentioned, you are probably best off with H.264, the settings in Compressor for MPEG-2 are for DVD and HD DVD sizing.
Make sure you set it for the highest settings and 2-Pass (may take some time) but it really can do an excellant job. Of course the PC needs to meet the specs to play back H.264 properly. As an aside, the 720 x 404 when used is not too bad. I have run component cables from my DVD Player to a 16:9 TV and it looks good. You may want to try a test.

  • Mpeg1 custom frame size

    Hello,
I do a lot of videos or video presentations for sales type people to use within powerpoint files. I usually supply clients with WMV files using flip4mac, which works well.
Occasionally I see mpeg1 muxed movies that are more than the default 320x240 frame sizes. My question is 2 part - 1. Is there a quicktime/compressor way to do this? 2. Any thoughts on whether mpeg1 is a superior way to supply movies for things like inserting into powerpoint presentations?
    Thanks
    Pete

That's pretty much the frame size of a MPEG-1 file, 320x240. There's a MPEG-1 file called Super Video (CD) that uses MPEG-2 compression for the MPEG-1 file. I think the frame size is 480x360. The video quality is still garbage. The reason you still see MPEG-1 files is that the format is still popular in India and Indonesia.
Use h.264 for your presentation. If you use MPEG-1 you'll hate the quality.
Open that MPEG-1 you have in Quicktime and see what the inspector window tells you what the format is.

  • I thought FCP X 10.1.1 could handle non-standard frame sizes?

Yesterday I was demonstrating FCP X 10.1.1 to a friend.
As time was limited I imported the nearest piece of video I could find, which happened to be part of an H.264  video tutorial with a frame size of  960 x 600 and a frame rate of 30fps.
I hit the E key to send it to the timeline only to receive the old "not recognised" error message as shown below.
I thought I may have created the project incorrectly but when I repeated with a new project I double-checked that I had selected "Set based on first video clip".
I thought that FCP X 10.1.1 would automatically recognise a non-standard frame size and simply create an appropriate project.
I was too busy doing the demo to investigate at the time but later I discovered that there was no problem creating a 960 x 600 custom project manually.
It's a pity FCPX is not clever enough to do it automatically  ............  or can it?

Thanks Tom, you clarified it .......  or at least something clicked in my brain.
I was trying to set "Custom" when I created the new project.
I didn't know, or had forgotten, that in the "error" window I could select "Custom".
All is now well and FCP X 10.1.1 is pretty clever after all!
There is one weird thing I'd like to mention.
When I clicked on "Custom" the 960 x 600  frame dimensions appeared but the  frame rate was listed as 23.98p as shown in the screenshot below.
    So what's wrong with that?
Well the clip is 30p  and I naturally thought I was going to end up with a project with an incorrect frame rate.
Now here's the funny thing  .........  when I selected the project and viewed it in the Inspector it was the correct 30p
So why was I given that worrying piece of misinformation.

  • Export Media- matching frame sizes to codec formats

The short version of this would be "what are the most common settings for compressed video at 720p"?
Reading the suggested settings for youtube and other sites simply leads me to more questions, as the presets from premier that get close to matching these recommendations all seem to have odd framerates and frame sizes...
    The long:
Producers that have me scoring audio to some short bumper intro clips have had me download the quicktimes from vimeo. Revealing the Inspector in quictime, i see the specs on the video files ("Photo- Jpeg" compression format, in what I've been told is 'true 720p resolution' (1280x720), at 59.94 fps). Yet cant seem to find similar export settings as presets in Premiere. I am aware of the very useful function of being able to match master project settings from within the Media, but other people who recieve the preview clips note 'why are these in Photo- Jpeg'?
When I use premier presets that contain 720p res, they are often an odd frame size, which again renders questions from the recipient (why is this 720p at 24drop?) etc. So wondering why the difference between what I recieve and what's available from the same video format preset.
For instance When choosing "Photo- Jpeg" as a preset, the res is indeed 720p, yet the frame is nowhere near 1280x720 (not in front of my rig right now but its something like 900x720). In fact quicktime presets come up with these odd frame sizes as well. The presets Im able to locate so far that hold full-frame HD output settings are branded DV and HDV camera options...meanwhile '720p NTSC' is also in odd frame sizes under presets, not sure what to make of that...maybe I was mistaken in thinking 720p NTSC runs at 59.94?
I understand that Youtube, Vimeo and other sites we may be using have their 'recommended settings' faq pages. However my main concern is whether these are also typical settings for compressed quicktimes that producers may want delivered offline as well? Is there a 'standard' at all?
Read alot of FAQs over the past couple days, but these mainly discuss the options available and how to get to them, not finding alot of info regarding
"when to use export settings and why".so I come to you for your expertise...
Thanks for your patience and your insight folks!

    >  Is there a 'standard' at all?
    No.
Sorry, but that's the simple answer.
    Regarding Photo-JPEG versus H.264:
Photo-JPEG codec in a QuickTime container is rather common for such purposes as stock footage---when the quality really matters, but file size (for bandwidth purposes) has to be considered, too.
H.264 is much more effective at compressing a file, but usually at the expense of some image quality. YouTube---to put it bluntly---doesn't care about the quality of movies the way that a stock footage website does, so YouTube prefers H.264. If you upload a video in a nice, high-quality, perfect file, YouTube will recompress it behind the scenes for playback---so you might as well give it what it wants in the first place so that you at least have some control over how your image is destroyed... er... compressed.
There's some more general information about output formats and codecs in this movie that I made:
"FAQ: What's the best export format or codec?"

  • Recommended Codec/Frame Size for Enhanced Audio CD

I've just been asked to render a music video compatible with Enhamced Audio CD format. basically it's an Audio CD with a portion set aside for data where the video will reside.
The file has to play in real time off of the CD.
Anyone know of some rock solid, widely available codecs/recommended frame size that will work?
The net seems devoid of good solid info on this.

Having done some digging, it seems an .M4v H.264 encoded and running at about 640x360 should do the trick. Some indication on the packaging needs to specify QT 7 or above either Mac or PC to view the video side of the disc.
This happily plays off a 8x CD drive.
SVCD is old technology, superceded by DVD. H.264 is the way forward!
    Thanks.

  • MiniDV: frame size problem?!!

    Hi guys
    The case:
When I capture from MiniDV the captured footages come in 720 x 576 frame size, while the sequence I am using is 1440 x 1080 and sometimes full HD 1920 x 1080. My final video is the same size of my sequence. What I do right now to overcome the frame size differences problem is to scale my footage to frame size of the sequence, but that results in low quality of my final production.
    The questions:
Q1: Is it possible to directly capture footages from MiniDV at frame size of 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080?
Q2: Is it possible to change the frame size of 720 x 576 to 1440 x 1080 or 1920 x 1080 without having to scarify quality?
Q3: if none of the above is possible then what should I do to solve this problem?

not very good quality at that because the compression system used (the "codec") is not very efficient and therefore the quality of video you get saved to the tape isn't good.
That's quite debatable.  The quality of DV compression is equal or even superior to standard definition Betacam SP, which was a broadcast industry standard.
Newer camcorders ( A few years ago ) dropped the miniDV compression mechanism and changed to miniHDV (which is actually MPEG4 part 10 aka AVCHD aka H.264) and record on the same "miniDV" tape at the same bitrate but because the compression is better it's possible to record HD on that older miniDV tape technology.
More than a few errors there.  For starters, the HD format is called HDV, nothing "mini" in the name.  Such cameras do use MiniDV tapes, but the format itself is called simply HDV.  Further, HDV is an MPEG 2 compression scheme, not MPEG4.  Further, the compression is very, very lossy, thus resulting in a image actually worse than DV in some ways, with many artifacts and a lesser color space.  It's because so much more of the data is simply thrown out that you can fit the HD signal into the same SD data rate.  And finally, AVCHD is the name of the MPEG4 standard, but there are no cameras that record AVCHD to tape.  They all use internal hard drives or some type of flash card like SDHC.
Finally, you can use something like InstantHD to uprez normal DV footage into HD.  I can't speak for the results, bot ideally it would be better to be shooting in HD form the start.

Export your FCP sequence using "current settings" and "make self contained"
Open up Compressor and select from the presets H.264 for 300Kbps.
Duplicate the preset so you can edit the settings.
    In the duplicate preset -
    Enable Frame Controls -
    Resize: Better
    Output fields: Progressive
    Deinterlace: Better
    Adaptive Details: selected
Rate Conversion: Fast (your are not chaning the frame rate)
    Duration: 100% of source
    In the Geometry Tab
    set frame size to: 854x480
    pixel aspect; 1.0
    Audio pass through.
then add the exported file from FCP and apply the new preset.
You can change the Resize and Deinterlace to "Better" but usually with a much longer render time.
    have fun.

  • QT 7.2 file size limit

Hello: I am trying to download video taken at a recent meeting that is broken up into several parts. I have been able to download those parts that are < 2 GB in size and play them successfully, but the files that are < 2 GB in size are different. The whole file downloads(i.e. the Movie Inspector shows a file size of 2.34 GB) but audio and video stop after about 1:10'14", which I think corresponds to about 2 GB of data (if I Apple-I the file, it is shown as 2 GB (not 2.34 GB) in size.
Data from Movie Inspector window: AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    H.264 Decoder, 1280 x 720 (1248 x 702), Millions
It seems that I have downloaded the whole file but only the first 2 GB will play. How can I get the whole file to play (I am using QT PRO)
    Thanks!

Were these files stored on or transfered from a FAT 16 formatted drive?
Only it has the 2 GB file size limit. No limit on QuickTime file sizes.
