HAL Issue

Hi
We are on Essbase 7.x ,and I am using - I am pulling a txt file from FTP Site using HAL- here I am getting an error
"Java.lang.out of memory error" all the time
If the file is small it is working fine and sometimes it work fine with executable even the file is large.
I am testing the process how to avoid this error , is there any workaround for this error. Is there any other reason for this error
Thank You

Hi John,
I am not doing any complex processing I am just getting the file from FTP Site..Here I am using just 5methods(Open,Change Directory,Read binary,write binary and Close) of FTP Adapter. Now the heapsize is 512MB, stack size is 16MB. I didn't tried with more than 512MB heap.
Here I am able to pull the files up to 15700KB
Did any one tried to pull the files of size more than 16000kb from FTP site using FTP adapter in HAL. Please let me know if you succeed or not
Thank You for your help

  • Some HAL issues

    Both me and my friend have this issue, we have both looked through the web to no luck.
    Whenever we try to mount any kind of storage device(USB mouse works fine, but that doesnt matter since you dont mount them), we recieve this error:
    A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal")
    We would both appreciate any help,

  • New to Arch. Hal issue?

    I will start off by saying how quick and unbloated i am finding my Arch w/ XFCE install.
    However, i think i have a problem with HAL? I followed the beginners Wiki from start to finish, i don't think anything went wrong.
    I cannot mount the DVD drive, nor can i see my other NTFS drives. When i insert a disc it will show on the desktop with the title name, but when i click on it i get this error. Here is an example of a DVD i inserted, but it does the same regardless of media type.
    Unable to mount "WATCHMEN_D1_EU":
    Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.21" (uid=1000 pid=4689 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=2908 comm="/usr/sbin/hald))
    It might be something obvious, but i had a look in the Wiki at the Hal section, and i reinstalled it and dsub etc but thats as much as i know.

    Hi, I'm having the same problem. I have followed the info on the wiki regarding the /etc/hal/fdi/information/*
    but there is no such file on my machine. Also I have removed the automount options for the CD and DVD in the /etc/fstab, still didn't help.
    There is a link here regarding the .ck in the xinitrc: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=59986, I have tried this and it doesn't still work.
    All of the directories in the /etc/hal are empty, should I do some configuration myself in these directories? I'm a noob....
    In my case the DVD and CD get recognized by Thunar, but they don't get mounted to /media/cd or /media/dvd directory...
    I have been checking out the /etc/rc.d/hal script, because I wanted to add the --use-syslog option for the hald, so that I can see what is happening using dmesg... being noob, I didn't want to mess around with rc.d... is there a way to start the hald using this script so that HAL writes to sys logs? /etc/rc.d/hal -help just gave what it defined as help within itself {stop, start, restart} ....
    I forgot to mention: my USB HDD drives of all sorts get recognized and mounted by udev rules without a problem... just additional info.
    SOLVED: I just needed a full restart.
    Not SOLVED: it works through THUNAR, when THUNAR is up, it mounts and creates the appropriate directories within /media dir, but without THUNAR, nothing get's mounted and no directories are created within /media.
    Any advice?

  • XFCE issues - HAL/shutdown; startxfce from non-root; keyboard maps

    Today I finally decided to get rid of Ubuntu on my desktop machine and installed Archlinux.
    I want to have XFCE running on it and in general its running quite nicely.
    [ignore this paragraph]
    Yet I can't use restart/shutdown my comp from within Archlinux using that power off button. I get an error stating that HAL is either not permitting to shutdown/reboot the computer, or that it's not available.
    [/stop ignoring it here]
    Also my keyboard map in XFCE is different than the one I use outside X (I have a UK keyboard layout; in the shell without a desktop environment everything is right). Why is that? Where can I change it?
    Also I Arch installed on my laptop. Initially I used OpenBox, but now I wanted to try XFCE on it too. But here I can't start xfce from my user account (from root or with sudo though it works). I get an error stating "Unable to access file /home/user/.ICEauthority: Permission denied".
    EDIT: Alright, the HAL issue is solved for whatever reason. Seems like a restart did it.
    Last edited by Stalafin (2007-11-26 18:45:11)

    The solution to the startxfce problem is to change the owner.
    sudo chown -R youruser /home/user/.ICEauthority
    The -R flag will performe the change recursively
    If you ever log in as root again, or using sudo, you will have to change the owner again.

    Anyone know what's wrong here? Also, is there a way to look at all those messages that scroll past when you're booting? Shift+UpArrow doesn't work because the screen is reset at the end, and about half the messages get lost.
    Also, is there a one-stop place to go for a list of all the daemons with a basic description of what they do? I'd like to start as many as I can in the background, but I'm afraid I'll break something. I'd also like to know which daemons need other daemons to start before them, so I can reorder the ones that don't matter to my liking.
    One last thing, and not really related to the topic title (hope that's okay, seems like such a minor thing it doesn't need to take up a whole thread): I've been using 'shutdown -h now' to power down. Is that good or bad? Is there a way to get rid of the *beep* when I do this?
    Thanks a bunch!

    Worked like a charm, thanks!
    And yes, its perfectly fine to use sudo shutdown -h now. There are other commands like halt and poweroff. But poweroff, AFAIK, is only a symlink to shutdown -h now
    On my system, poweroff is a symlink to halt. But, either command makes a *beep* sound when I invoke it -- there must be some way to get rid of this. Shutting down didn't do that in Ubuntu when I hit the gui power button. How do they achieve that? Would it take a gui app to do? I'm running fluxbox, and I'd rather not go that route.
    About which daemons to start in the background -- I start everything in the background except - syslog-ng - that's the daemon responsible for logging events and such, you do not want to miss the logging if something goes wrong.
    Even hal? Seems like that's something I'd want to start before everything else, too.

  • Pmount-hal error

    HI all,
    My usb keydrive is not automounting with gnome-volume-manager, Im getting the following error when running gnome-volume-manager from a shell:
    lock_dir(): creat: No such file or directory
    Error: could not lock the mount directory. Another pmount is probably running for this mount point.
    I get this error running it as root or as user, so its not permissions...
    There is definately no other pmount running (killall pmount?)
    The /media/usbdisk directory exists (gnome-volume-manager/pmount-hal actually created the dir).
    I can manually mount it from the shell as root (since no fstab entry is created now).
    This is on a fresh install with gnome 2.12.2.
    Any ideas?
    EDIT: Nevermind, I redid the installation from scratch again and its working fine now...strange...
    Edit: If I add it to fstab, i works fine as user. So there is clearly a pmount-hal issue going on here...can anyone confirm this behaviour??

    lunke wrote:
    I've just noticed I have the same problem.
    EDIT: I've just found it's because pmount is trying to create the lock file in /var/lock. Just create the /var/lock dir and make it writeable for users.
    mkdir /var/lock && chown root.users /var/lock && chmod g+w /var/lock
    Someone file a bug report, I'm to lazy
    This dir should come with the pmount pkg.
    I had the same pmount problem and this advice saved me! I wonder how you figured it out.  thanks!

  • Automount Issue on Gnome 2.28: GDM Mounts USBs after 2nd Insert

    Good evening everyone (at least, it's evening here at my part of the Universe),
    I have been using Arch for the past month (and Ubuntu/Debian for two years) but am totally stumped on this odd behavior.
    When I first installed Gnome, I got that 'Permission denied' dialog box everytime I tried to mount a USB, but quickly realized that it was because of the wrong exec line at the start of my .xinitrc. When I changed it to
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
    I thought everything would be fine. However, for a USB to automount, I have to insert the USB TWICE. I don't know why. The first time, it's detected by 'lsusb', but not by Nautilus (it doesn't even show up in the Computer directory).

    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
    In this case, it's the Power Quotient International USB that isn't being read. When i remove the USB and put it back, it automounts.
    I have checked previous threads and most of them discuss the 'Permission denied' issue, which is not the same as this one :( I have also checked the 'I Won the Struggle Between HAL and PolicyKit' - I don't think I have the same problem.
    I have installed gnome-volume-manager.
    I have tried this issue on another user account, but it's still the same - takes 2 inserts of the USB to make it mount.
    I am a member of the storage and power groups.
    If there are any other logs that I should show, I would be happy to show them, but am unsure if I should post PolicyKit files (I'm not sure which one is in charge of drive automounting, I'm sorry) or if I should post my HAL configuration file, but so far I have checked my HAL config file and it is configured as was written in the HAL wiki.
    If someone could please point me in the right direction of what file(s) to look at (is this perhaps a HAL issue? or Xorg? or PolicyKit?) I would be happy to look into it again and post the appropriate files.
    Thank you very much! :)

    @Allan:
    Good point. That was a bit far fetched to say; I'll admit that. I should've looked at a roadmap or something. Maybe I was just unclear as to how much work distro developers were putting into customizing their rendition of gnome. Was unaware that installing a vanilla version of gnome would be unstable, wonder how the devs of gnome feel when working on a vanilla code base. .. oh well.
    @smakked:
    Maybe something's like window positioning is a little obsessive compulsive of me but that functionality was available in 2.26 and below; that's maybe why it seems unfinished or something. I'm not a n00b in any sort, I respect and understand opensource and such. I know that my post above sounds rather complain-oriented, but in all honesty, It's very MS like that newer software doesn't work as well (and sometimes worse) than previous versions. I just love gnome and can't use it because of some simple features that were taken away/ are not working.
    @Both of you:
    Creating a tab in nautilus then dragging the tab, segfaults nautilus. GDM segfaults if trying to log into gnome-session when the user is not part of 'wheel' ... just stuff like that. I've pulled the gnome packages on 3 different boxes (and 3 different CURRENT mirrors)... same issues. I know how to manage groups and permissons and basic packages to make arch work.
    So, I'm very sorry to sound annoying or anything of that nature. I was mainly curious if anyone else is having issue / knew a way to fix them. I know most arch users love *box window managers and the like, but SOME of you have to have gnome and notice things like that. lol. Anyways, It's clear that I might get talked down to on here or might get accused of being pedantic when things don't work. Thanks anyways guys.

  • Idea for forums - better topic management

    This issue is partly (not entirely) caused by evul help vampires avoiding Google, the Wiki, and the forum search, but...
    What if the forums were redesigned? Two separate main categories: Issues and Other. Issues would have a different structure: Instead of each person posting a topic, it's organized by issue. As in, one for HAL issues, one for X issues... those in particular might be better as subforums. There should be a high amount of heirarchal design, with multiple levels of subforums, getting down fairly specific. Then, people post in a thread according to their common issue and work on it together. I've noticed that there seems to often be multiple threads discussing an issue the OPs are having, and wondered if there was a way to increase collaboration. I'm not sure whether users should be able to post their own threads, or if not, what system there should be to get a thread approved. The latter seems obnoxious, so I'm thinking... wait, what if issues that are not confirmed as really being an issue (others have the same, or it at a glance from any experienced Archer seems like a real issue - maybe those with over 100 posts can make a topic classified as a full issue, including immediately be able to post an issue as a real issue?) are in a subforum, or something similar? Or a different forum altogether?
    Anyways, while the details are vague, does anyone think something like this might succeed? The forum software might have to be modified for this to really be elegant. It's a _little_ like the Talk pages in the Wiki, but I think a forum is a better setting, including it just being easier/faster/more viewed...

    Stripping down posts would be tedious and alternative solutions might get lost in the process. I don't know how difficult it would be on the backend, but it would be nice if the OP could mark a reply as the solution and enable someone to jump directly to it (without having to find the post url and add a link to the OP manually).
    More generally, perhaps having some sort of tag system for the forum would be good. Maybe there could be a separate help area that has some selectable parameters in dropdown menu format similar to the bugtracker to quickly categorize topics. This would also make it easier to keep "serious business" organized and on-topic while allowing "forum banter" in a separate area, which has a place on the forum too, imo... as the community grows, so will the social atmosphere around it, which is generally a good thing as long as it's driven in the right direction.

  • [SOLVED] Apparently, I don't understand mount

    Hey there!
    I'm having some problems with automounting and other things, so I started working on fixing that, but first I at least want to get a few things sorted out.
    For example, when I want to mount a CD-ROM, what I currently do is this:
    1) start thunar in _root_ mode, if I don't do it in root it complains with a HAL error that it can't do it
    2) click the CD icon in left pane
    3) do my stuff (usually start smplayer )
    To unmount, I just type "sudo umount /media/dvd"
    Now, I was going to check on this HAL issue, but then a friend of mine alerted me to the fact that I shouldn't even be using sudo to mount.
    I was curious as to why, it seems logical to need root privileges for something like that.
    But then he told me about executable permissions, my mount had "-rwxr-xr-x", his had "-rwsr-xr-x". He told me about the "s" flag and how it makes the system think that you're root
    when you execute it without sudo, even if you're not. So I changed the permissions on my /bin/mount. It still wouldn't work, it told me I needed to be root to mount. Then I changed the group of the
    executable to "storage" instead of "root". Still no dice (even though my user is a member of storage).
    I'd like to get this minor niggle fixed first before I try to even contemplate tackling the horrible mess that is udev/hal (I don't understand anything about it).
    Thanks in advance!

    Do you perhaps know why my mount just will not work without sudo? even though I have the "s" flag in user en the "x" flag in group and user? I'd really like to understand the fundamental issue here.
    Once again, thanks for your swift and helpful replies, it's much appreciated.
    You can only use mount and umount on a mount point, as a user, if it's in fstab with the 'user' or 'users' option. This is a security feature to prevent users from doing nasty things.
    Hmmm, it makes sense from a security point of view.
    I've also been digging around in the mount source code, some of the strange things I've encountered while using it that are in the source:
    LINE: 918 in mount.c
    switch (mnt_err) {
    case EPERM:
    if (geteuid() == 0) {
    if (stat (node, &statbuf) || !S_ISDIR(statbuf.st_mode))
    error (_("mount: mount point %s is not a directory"), node);
    else
    error (_("mount: permission denied"));
    } else {
    error (_("mount: must be superuser to use mount"));
    break;
    I've gotten the "mount: must be superuser to use mount" error at least once. This is really strange, as now it's checking on effective uid, which should be root for me
    LINE: 1616 in mount.c
    if (getuid () != geteuid ()) {
    suid = 1;
    if (types || options || readwrite || nomtab || mount_all ||
    fake || mounttype || (argc + specseen) != 1)
    die (EX_USAGE, _("mount: only root can do that"));
    Look at those conditions, that's just damn weird. These are both single occurences btw, so I know I've made it that far in the code path

  • Issue with HAL - Excel Adapter

    Hi
    We are using HAL V7. and excel 2007 . I am truing to use excel adapter in HAL . Here I guess the adapter is not supporting excel 2007. So I am getting the below error when I pull the excel adapter.
    Update the Vegneete BIS Installation registry by addign the current class id or excel sheet as the ExcelCLSID value of the key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vignette\eIntegrate\4.2\Workarounds.
    I am littlie confused overhere. I went to the particular location .,do I need to change the ExcelCLSID key?? if so with what key I need to replace... where I can I find the classid for excel 2007.
    Thank You for your time !!!1

    I find it incredibly amusing that they have a registry key labelled "Workarounds". If that isn't the sign of a lame-o product, I don't know what is.
    But you didn't ask to hear me rant and rave about HAL -- you want help.
    I never, in my many somewhat painful interactions with HAL, used the Excel adaptor. Is it trying to instantiate Excel itself, or just read from/write to a file? Many products don't need an instance of Excel to do Excel file operations (think of Dodeca, or OpenOffice), although perhaps HAL is not one of them.
    If you tried to make the file a .xls, does it work? Or could you make the file a .txt or .csv and just avoid the whole Excel issue altogether?
