Idea for forums - better topic management

This issue is partly (not entirely) caused by evul help vampires avoiding Google, the Wiki, and the forum search, but...
What if the forums were redesigned? Two separate main categories: Issues and Other. Issues would have a different structure: Instead of each person posting a topic, it's organized by issue. As in, one for HAL issues, one for X issues... those in particular might be better as subforums. There should be a high amount of heirarchal design, with multiple levels of subforums, getting down fairly specific. Then, people post in a thread according to their common issue and work on it together. I've noticed that there seems to often be multiple threads discussing an issue the OPs are having, and wondered if there was a way to increase collaboration. I'm not sure whether users should be able to post their own threads, or if not, what system there should be to get a thread approved. The latter seems obnoxious, so I'm thinking... wait, what if issues that are not confirmed as really being an issue (others have the same, or it at a glance from any experienced Archer seems like a real issue - maybe those with over 100 posts can make a topic classified as a full issue, including immediately be able to post an issue as a real issue?) are in a subforum, or something similar? Or a different forum altogether?
Anyways, while the details are vague, does anyone think something like this might succeed? The forum software might have to be modified for this to really be elegant. It's a _little_ like the Talk pages in the Wiki, but I think a forum is a better setting, including it just being easier/faster/more viewed...

Stripping down posts would be tedious and alternative solutions might get lost in the process. I don't know how difficult it would be on the backend, but it would be nice if the OP could mark a reply as the solution and enable someone to jump directly to it (without having to find the post url and add a link to the OP manually).
More generally, perhaps having some sort of tag system for the forum would be good. Maybe there could be a separate help area that has some selectable parameters in dropdown menu format similar to the bugtracker to quickly categorize topics. This would also make it easier to keep "serious business" organized and on-topic while allowing "forum banter" in a separate area, which has a place on the forum too, imo... as the community grows, so will the social atmosphere around it, which is generally a good thing as long as it's driven in the right direction.

  • Ideas for text based budget management and software

I'm looking for suggestions for text-based software or just basic scripts for tracking expenses.
For the last six months I've been recording my purchases in text files, one file for each month.
    An entry looks like this:
    01/01/2013,Schnucks,banana, groceries,1.00,cash
It works pretty well for recording info, no alternative system could be much faster than just adding a line to a text file.
Now that I've been recording data for about 6 months, I'm more interested in parsing through it to see what I'm spending in each month and in various categories. At the moment, I just run the files through grep and awk to get what I want. I'm contemplating writing a python program to let me filter and calculate totals and do whatever else comes to mind: importing credit card statements, generating graphs, etc. But at that point, I feel like I'm probably just re-inventing the wheel.
Does anybody want to share how they are handling a similar case?
I'm ok with changing my entry format, but I'm pretty attached to handling things as text files. I don't need anything more complex if it adds to the overhead of creating an entry.

Hey, I been doing something very similar!
Except it also will measure income, so I can know how much I have done/expend this month, week, etc.
I don't have it at hand atm, but I use : to separate the fields, and use slashes to escape it (like \:)
Yes, that is a DSV file.
I haven't dedicated time to work on it lately, but I was writing a perl script to do the calculations.
One idea I have is to create an additonal file for a list of expenses names, like this:
    milk-z:Milk brand Z:milk
    milk-y:Milk brand Y:milk
the first field is an unique code for the product, second field a description, and third field is a category.
That way I could see how much I have expend on milk, no matter the brand.
On the expenses file, an expense would be similar to this:
    2012-12-20:expense:milk-z:5.0
The first field has the date, in the format YYYY-MM-DD; that order is important to be able to sort the file if is necessary
Second field has "expense"; it could be "income" if it was an income
Third field is the product code - if its something I don't buy regulary, I could be only a name (like "new led tv" or something), if is an income, the reason behind the income.
And fourth field is just the amount of money.
Oh, I think I'll dedicate some time to the project again

  • Idea Exchange for Forums

The Idea Exchanges seem like a great way for NI to judge customers' sentiment and importance of feature requests for LabVIEW. It provides a formalized and centralized means exclusively for improving NI products and services. I presume it also is a factor in budgeting resources for R&D.
I would propose an Idea Exchange be made for the forums as well. This forum (the Feedback on NI Discussion Forums) has got great little tidbits scattered throughout on features that would make these forums AWESOME (not to mention all the tidbits scattered throughout other forums). The problem is that those tidbits are buried in so many places that it would be extremely difficult to centralize them into one list, and it would be impossible to prioritize the ideas. The other problem is that since the ideas are so scattered, the number of people who would read them and say "YES! I want to see that too!" is dramatically reduced (compare readership of this current Feedback forum to that of other forums - it just doesn't get the same exposure).
Basically, it's unfair for me and others to continually make snarky comments here and there about how the forums suck and Lithium doesn't know squat about web development or user interfaces. It would be much more beneficial for the us the community and for the developers/maintainers of these forums if we could get some structured, formalized feedback on how to make the forums better through the use of an Idea Exchange. This would provide sufficient, constructive means for people like me to vent frustration about bugs and features that I want in upcoming forum upgrades. (I'm here because I like the forums, not because I want to gripe about the forums!)
One important benefit for both NI and the community that an Idea Exchange would offer is that we all can see loads of these Ideas being marked as "Completed" when forum upgrades are implemented. It feels good to see our feedback is being heard and knowing we have worked together to make a better product/service. If we don't see a list of "Completed" features and bugs, it will be all too easy to focus negative attention on the new bugs.
(I am aware the current process is such: one of us makes a suggestion here or there, and then Laura makes an Idea on the actual Lithium Idea Exchange. She's really diligent about this, but the problem with that process is that it's not our community that prioritizes the features we request, it's Laura's peers on that other forum who decide if our Ideas are worth implementing or not. I think it should be the LabVIEW community that prioritizes feature requests, and then Delegate Laura and Delegate Todd are able to go to Lithium directly with their constituents' priorities. I mean, it's not even worth bugging Lithium about a feature if nobody but the creator likes it!)

I actually talked to a contact at Lithium recently about our forum users voting on the Idea Exchange and it seemed like it would be fine.  If you want to register and vote on ideas that I've submitted on your behalf, please do so.  You could also submit new ideas, but they may get more visibility if I submit them as I am a known user / customer of the platform.  I'm convinced there's not enough crowd momentum of LabVIEW forum users who would invest the time to make this venture worthwhile. Also, based on your comment below, I realize I'm not qualified to do this.
One problem I also see with our users submitting ideas directly is that sometimes the idea has to do with a feature of the Lithium platform that we don't have turned on.  That just means that I can provide some insight into whether or not your idea falls into this category prior to submitting the idea to Lithium. See next comment...
I am open to creating an Idea Exchange for the forums themselves. Neat! This would solve your comment above. An internal Idea Exchange would help you prioritize which components/widgets to turn off/on without bothering Lithium with potentially moot requests.  Some of your suggestions are things that are not directly tied to improvements in Lithium's software but rather to how NI has chosen to implement the forums.  Those sorts of ideas we have control over.  I am solely responsible for the features on the forums now, Neat! I hope it came with a pay raise so it may take some time for me to implement some ideas but I would be willing to give it a shot.  We would need to keep the Feedback board for bug reports and other more support focused questions. Agreed, an Idea Exchange is not a replacement for the Feedback Forum. The Idea Exchange should not be used for "day to day" maintenance such as broken links, that's what this forum is for.
However, my first priority is getting the forums upgraded what's your expected launch date... days, weeks...? This forum upgrade I would like to see the Idea Exchange upgraded a few weeks before NIWeek so we can test-drive it a little while, because like last year, we're going to see a little surge on the Exchange after NIWeek. so that you can see the new version because some ideas and bugs are addressed.  And then, we will start on a new list of ideas and bugs
I appreciate all of the time and effort all of you put in to make the forums better for everyone AND all of the questions that you answer throughout the community.  I look forward to continuing to work with you all on improvements.
    Regards, My reciprocate regards

All the reputable devs are busy and out of reach.
Apple takes 30% from the price, so you're left to figure profit after knowing how many you will sell/did sell.
Development costs can range from less than USD$10k to six figures or more.
You don't provide details on what category you plan on participating in, so it makes anything but dartboard guessing pretty difficult, sorry

  • Graduation project: ideas for a web application

    Hello,
I apologize for posting this topic in here but I just need ideas from more experienced developers, we are a group of 5 students in computer science department and we are required to make a graduation project for a 1 year perioed, we have an average experience in J2EE, JSP, struts and JSF and J2SE and we are required to make the project as a web application but we just couldn't find any new or interesting ideas all the web application are either blogs, emai/webmai, Content Management systems, Customer relationship management, ... but we are looking for a new ideas, we've been googling for more than a month now and we've already checked alot of posts in this forum for ideas. we just want to know what services people need from the internet that could be made as a web application. Thank you very much

Rather than looking for a cool "theme" can you give some ideas of what you need to showcase in this application?
Is it just a basic web application - ie slap a few data entry screens together into a screenflow, and do some calculations at the end
Do you need to demonstrate knowledge of the technologies you mentioned (J2EE, JSP, struts, JSF...)
Do you need to push the limits of the web interface?
Do you need to "break new ground"
Ajax is a useful thing to investigate and push the boundaries with.
Or take a web application and make it multi platform - ie access it with a browser, via a mobile phone - see what you need to do to accomplish that.
The only other idea would be to do some sort of game/simulation.
    Multi user obviously.
eg a stockmarket sim, where you can log on to buy/sell shares. You also hook up your app to some XML feeds where it picks up the daily changes so you don't have to enter them manually.
Will demonstrate both user interface, and back end functionality.
    Good luck,

Good afternoon,Wasn't quite sure where to put this so I put it under Best Practices. Feel free to move it if there's a better spot. It sort of covers all topics and is more of a high level conversation.I'm toying with a few different options so I want to lay it out on "paper" and see what others might think. Building 1 houses all networking/WAN equipment, Building 2, on the other side of the P2P, is basically an island and gets all of it's connectivity from Building 1. Only equipment on side at...

  • Need advise on selecting the IDE for swing UI development

    Hi,
I'm looking for a best IDE for developing swing application.
Our application is a Rich Desktop Client Application which will have more than one hunderd screens. And all the business logics will be J2EE EJB services.
At the initial stage, we thought of using the .net winform technology as Desktop Rich GUI for its best look & feel and productivity perspective, by invoking the business services thru webservices.
But later, we decided to use swing components which are somewhat promising now-a-days. This will avoid the multi-platform issues, maintainability and perfomance difficulties.
I would be so much grateful, if somebody could share me their experience on deciding the IDE which would be the best for Swing development currently.
If any one has the list of different swing UI builder IDE and the feedback list correspondingly, could you post them?
    ..Thiruppathy.R

    Thanks All!!
I experienced both NetBeans and Eclipse recently. I did not work in-depth in any of these IDEs for swing application. All the observations are from my first impression on them.
Please find the below are my feedback on both of these IDEs from my experience in the swing application development perspective :
    Net Beans
    Advantages:
    1. Palette Manager option is good -> I can add the custom components to the palette very easily and make them available to use them readily.
    2. IDE Layout / Framework is impressive -> In the swing design mode, the palette, properties, inspector and source all are evenly arranged in a way that things can be managed smoothly. It's very impressive.
    3. Swing Components Alignment options are good -> IDE is very smart in arranging the swing components in the Panel or Frame. Even it helps the user by showing the alignment lines in the background. So we can definitely say that Net Beans has come in much better shape.
    Disadvantages:
    1. I am not allowed to change the generated code in the IDE.
    2. I can't change the component name or event method name, other than the IDE generated one.
    3. Additional Design codes will be reflected only at the runtime, but not at the design time. Here the developer is loosing the flexibility of using the code changes that impact the design.
    Eclipse - Visual Editor
    Advantages:
    1. Source and Design mode, both can be viewed simultaneously.
    2. Source and design, both are in sync all the time. The user have the complete control with the code.
    3. As everyone knows, the IDE is very powerful and ease of use.
    Disadvantages:
    1. I can't add any custom components to the palette to make it available for ready use. Only option is 'Choose Bean' to add the custom components. So I should remember the component name everytime while adding in the panel / frame.
I also tried few commercial plugins with Eclipse. Given below is my feedback from my experience,
    1. Eclipse - JFormDesigner
    Advantage:
    1. It provides Palette Manager option and very smart in the swing components alignment settings.
    DisAdvantages:
    1. For the design mode, it uses JFD file and later java code will be generated from this JFD file. So what you are seeing in the design mode is JFD file, not our java source. Developer have no option to see the source changes in the design mode.
    2. It is a commercial product.
    2. Eclipse -> Jigloo
    Advantage:
    1. Easy to use.
    2. Custom swing components can be added the Palette.
    Disadvantage:
    1. It is similar to Eclipse - Visual Editor, but the difference is in the look and feel of the palette and event handlings.
    2. For commercial purpose, you have to purchase it.
I also tried the JBuilder, but seems that it provides the Eclipse - Visual Editor for Swing Application development.
I didn't try the IntelliJ IDE yet, for swing application development. Some of the forum responses tells that IntelliJ IDE is very powerful, but not recommended for swing application development.
Eclipse - Visual Editor is promissing and it's open source. As I'm beginner to the swing development, I might have some short vision on some of the above said items.
If somebody have a better comparison sheet and could share with us, I would be grateful.

i have many ideas for silicone based builds and i would like input from everyone if you wish.
discrete graphics are great and i believe that both Intel and AMD have made great recent leaps in this architecture and i give them both respect.
i believe low cas is the way to go for memory to assist in optimal multi-core usage and rendering capability.

  • Would it be possible to have a better PRESETS management system in LR6/CC2015 ?

Congrats on LR6.  I see a very nice speed improvement when working with my 36MP D800 files, especially when zooming in/out 100%.  I still experience some hickups (controls sometime feel like they hang for half a second), but overall I enjoy the direction the speed upgrade is going.  I look forward to the next updates.
    Meanwhile, a question:
Would it be possible to have a better PRESETS management system in LR6/CC2015 ?
Unless I am not looking correctly (and if so, please enlight me!), I can't seem to figure out how I can manage my Presets.  At the moment, I have a bunch of folders containing presets.  I would like to have the ability to move Preset Folders within Folders.  I mean, how hard can this be to implement??
Users who have the VSCO presets will know what I mean.  You have tons of folders containing presets.  How about putting them all within one VSCO main folder?
Also, how about having the ability to search your presets?  A simple search field at the top of the presets would do the trick.
I have seen virtually no change to the way we manage presets in LR since version 1 or 2.  I'm sure there is a better way to manage th
Again, thank you for your excellent work.
I look forward to see where development of LR leads us.

    Hi Marilyn,
Thanks a lot for the reply, it's good to see that even the not-so-polite rant postings are taken serious and get attention. I think that most of us truly appreciate the platform SAP is providing, but we're a bit tired with some of the application features/limitations. So I hope nobody takes offense when we're venting a bit...
    Waiting for more input here.
I neither understand the <em>more input</em> (for what and by whom) nor the <em>here</em> (this thread or this forum). The missing functionality for dealing with unanswered questions seems obvious enough. At least that should be one topic that everybody agrees on. I suspect that the same applies to the rather poor <em>search capabilities</em>. Though as we can see in the forums, lots of people apparently seem to prefer to quickly shoot some questions instead of wasting their time with any research...
    Continue to convince us please.
Is that a polite way of saying <em>keep on whining</em>? If yes, then no problem, I think we all need to do that from time to time...
If the feedback from the community is truly important, I'd say that there should be a public system for posting bugs/feature requests on which people could vote. This should be prominently placed in the forums and would allow easier feedback. The voting feature could be used to possibly limit the bugs/requested features to look at (e.g. top ten list) and then be classified by SAP based on implementation effort (with the usual disclaimer that no feature might ever be implemented just because it's wanted). Needless to say that it should be easy to search for already existing requests, but in general I'd assume that fairly soon there would be more voting (on top requests) than posting new ones...
To channel requests and avoid too many silly postings in this bug/feature tool one could imagine using earned <em>forum points</em> possibly as a currency for putting a value to the requests (i.e. I could vote to say if feature A gets implemented I'd pay it with N forum points, which are deducted from my account once the feature is present). I'm not sure if that is a good idea, but at least it might ensure that people who truly care about the platform enter their comments. At least it seems that often systems, which implement some artificial monetary system and try to optimize on cost, yield very good results...
    Cheers, harald
