Handle browser keyboard shortcuts (like F5)

Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to handle browser keyboard shortcuts (like the F5, F6, etc) and disable it.
I can do this by Javascript and an Applet but not in a Flex application.
EDIT: forgot to say that when the Flex application has focus I cant handle the shortcuts in Javascript, so it's impossible to trap the keys in Javascript and sent them to the Flash movie.

I know how to do a EventListener! the problem is that the Flash Player does not 'trap' the browser shortcuts !!!
The manual says:
"When handling a key or key combination that the underlying operating system or browser recognizes, the operating system or browser generally processes the event first. For example, in Microsoft Internet Explorer, pressing Control+w closes the browser window. If you trap that combination in your Flex application, Internet Explorer users never know it, because the browser closes before the ActiveX Flash Player has a chance to react to the event."
So I'm guessing that, for some kind of reason, Flash Player is the only ActiveX that does not handle this.

I just upgraded from Thunderbird ver. 6 to ver. 31.5.0 (both Turkish) and message marking / tagging keyboard shortcuts like "A", "S", "M", 1-9 do not work.

I checked the docs to see if they have changed but according to the docs all these shortcuts should be working fine. Any ideas?

hold shift while starting Thunderbird to enter safe mode. Do they work in safe mode?

Is there a keyboard shortcut (like in Safari) that chooses #1 on your bookmark menu, or #2 on your bookmark menu, etc? I miss that.

In Safari (on macbook pro) if I type command 3 I get my 3rd bookmark. command 1 gives me my first, etc. It's so handy. Firefox?

InDesignCC Keyboard shortcuts, both default and customized, don't work, or work sporadically

It seems like I'm not the only person having these problems, but I thought it was worthwhile to share my experience to see how many others are having the same issues.
I have several customized quick keys set up in InDesignCC, along with the default keyset. Some appear to work more or less correctly, some--a good example is "Links/Edit Original", which I attempt to use fairly regularly--don't work at all. Even a default quick key like Save As (cmd + shift + S) doesn't work. All that happens when I try to save as, is the word InDesign in the menu bar flashes every time I hit the key combination. Weirder still, if I put my cursor in the menu, and show the file drop down, and THEN try the quick key, it works just fine. I haven't made any system changes or updates, and this is something that's only a problem with InDesignCC (though I have had some similar issues with IllustratorCC), all my CS6 applications work fine. I've even looked through my keyset to make sure that there weren't any conflicts that I was missing, and there weren't. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, or is anyone else dealing with it themselves?

This is a symptom of InDesign believing that the keyboard shortcut is allocated to a menuitem within the InDesign menu, most likely within the Services menu.
Similar behavior is seen for Cmd-Shift-L, which is InDesign's shortcut for left alignment, but by default recent versions of Mac OS X assign it to Search With Google, though it should only work when text is selected. Sometimes the OS beats out InDesign and sometimes it doesn't. It's clearly a bug in how InDesign handles its keyboard shortcut interface with the OS as a result of Cocoaization, and I understand InDesign Engineering spent some time trying to make it work and did not succeed.
Perhaps you can look in the Services menu for a clue, though its contents sometimes changes dynamically, so that may not work so well.
(hrmm; I see others have covered the above while I was doing other things. oops.)
With respect to Edit Original, are you aware that you can invoke that by option-doubleclicking? Not the same, but I find it more convenient.

Still no keyboard shortcut for the search field!

I don't use Safari, because, unlike other browsers, their is no keyboard shortcut like command-K for the search field.
Every time there is a new version I check to see if it has been added.
Please add a keyboard shortcut to select the search field!

here are the steps i followed, but i could not see any shortcuts working....

what i am looking for is keyboard shortcuts like, F4 or F8 we use in CRM GUI, these will be for use by end users (agents of IC) for creating order entries and other functions....

Hello,
Maybe a silly remark but if you define shortcut "K" for entry X you can use the shortcut by pressing ESC + K. In other words, you should always use the ESC in combination with the choosen shortcut.

Keyboard shortcuts not working while mouse over title-bar

most of the time, while mouse is over the top title bar, keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T, Alt+D) are not working.
This is a strange behaviour that happens only after i migrated to linux (ubuntu 10.10)
Sometimes, after i try the shortcuts a few times, on middle of the screen also, then suddenly it works also when the mouse is on the title bar. It's pretty strange...

Well, that's not the case here.
I tried to focus on text field, and the keyboard shortcuts does work, so that's obviously not the case here.
Sometimes the address bar is selected and i can write there, but when the mouse go over the top title, it suddenly stops reacting.
And the Alt+D and Ctrl+T are not working doesn't matter if a text field is selected.
BTW, sometimes it does work, it almost seems like an intermittent problem.

Assigning Global Keyboard Shortcut to Display Home Folder

Hi there,
I've done some hunting to determine if there is a way to assign a global keyboard shortcut to display a finder window displaying one's home folder contents. I don't see how I can do it using "Keyboard Shortcuts" in system preferences. Does anyone know if there is a way to accomplish this?

you can't make a keyboard shortcut like that that will work from any application using keyboard system preferences.
You can do it with a 3rd party app as follows.
paste the following into script editor and save it as a script or an application.

Keyboard shortcut to increase/decrease tempo

Hi everyone,
I'm more or less a noob to Logic. I'm blown away by its potential. I used to work with Cubase. There's just one of two things I really miss about it. And this is the most urgent one:
Is there a way to gradually increase and decrease the song tempo using a keyboard shortcut, like Cubase does with the + and - keys?
Any help will be appreciated SOOOOOOOO MUCH! This would speed up things for me incredibly!

Can someone suggest some keyboard shortcuts, like to increase/decrease volume, forward/rewind, etc.
Also, when I start arch, in xfce4-mixer, headphone and pcm levels are zero by default and I need to increase them on every boot. Is there a way to change their default values.

Twitter on the Classic: Keyboard Shortcuts?

I have used the Twitter app on the Q10 for over a year. It supported keyboard shortcuts like
Space key = Scroll down one page
P = Previous post
and so on.
It looks like on the Classic, Twitter does not support any keyboard shortcut.
Are you experiencing the same? Or is my Twitter just broken?

@freakinvibe Yes, that is correct. I am using the Twitter App on the BB Classic. There the shortcuts work.
When I press "B" it scrolls to the bottom of a list. Pressing "T" scrolls to the top, pressing "P" goes to the previous tweet ect...I do not know all the shortcuts and I am only rarely using Twitter but obviuosly when i press keys some action is taken and seems that this is not the case on your Classic.
I suggest to delete and re-install the Twitter App.
Maybe something went wrog during the device switch (if you did that)

Audacious: keyboard shortcuts not working anymore

Hi all
After one of the last Audacious updates, my keyboard shortcuts (like b for going to the next track) in Audacious are not working anymore. I have activated Global Hotkey as well as Gnome Shortkeys, but the shortcuts are not back. Did anyone experience the same issue? How do I get my shortcuts back?

Some keyboard shortcuts have been changed in the GTK interface, since many of the old shortcuts interfered with typing
(for example, binding the spacebar without modifiers to “pause”). Look around in the drop-down menus to find the new shortcuts.

Keyboard shortcuts to run app

I am having some trouble in this area, being a decade+ Windows user - I want to have a keyboard shortcut (like... Ctrl + Cmd + V will open VLC Player)
I've found the Keyboard Shortcuts under Keyboard & Mouse, which seems to add keyboard shortcuts depending on the application, but these seem to require the exact menu title within the app.
What I want is to run the app itself, globally, within any window, by pressing a key combination.
Is this possible? Easy? I figured I was missing something since everything else has been easily intuitive for me.

Setek, I followed all of those steps, modifying them to correct for a syntax error I got. Everything seemed to work. I have “Terminal” as menu option available for all applications, with a keyboard shortcut associated (and displaying) with it. Bizarrely, the keystroke works in Safari, but not elsewhere that I found. Finder is silent. Text Edit and Mail make a “bonk” sound, as they do for other invalid key presses.
What I tried follows. Let us know how it works for you!
First step, need to enable the AppleScript Menus Extra (if you have not already):
Applications > AppleScript > AppleScript Utility
Check Show Script Menu in menu bar (checkbox)
To make things easier, then open your Scripts folder:
Script Menu (icon) > Open Scripts Folder > Open User Scripts Folder
This is the location where your compiled script needs to be saved.
Open up Script Editor (in the same folder as AppleScript Utility) and past in the following code:
tell application "Finder"
open application file "Terminal.app" of folder "Utilities" of folder "Applications" of startup disk
end tell
In Script Editor, Save selecting “application” as the File Format. Script Editor by default put this in Documents. So I moved the result to the User Script Folder. (Alternatively, one can save directly to Home > Library > Scripts.)
After saving, Script Editor should reformat the lines above. You can test the script to make sure it works. You can quit Script Editor if you like.
At this point I have “Terminal” as the bottom most item in my the Script Menu.
The final step is adding a keystroke shortcut, as I showed earlier today for Window > Zoom.
System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts (tab) > + (button)
Application: All Applications
Menu Title: Terminal
Keyboard Shortcut: Control-Command-T (Command-Option-T is used)
So long as the Scripts Menu is available, this shortcut keystroke should be available.
Modify the above directions as you like for other applications.
