Handling errors in OBIEE init block

Hi,
Is there a way to catch an error in the execution of an init block? Looks like the only way to figure out that the query for the initialization block has failed is by looking at NQServer.log and there is otherwise no alert or indication that some failure has occurred at all.
I would like to be able to alert an administrator as soon as an init block query fails.
thanks.

You can do some "insert or update" in the init block or use DB triggers to catch fails. select user_name from table(orabi_auth(:USER)) Orabi_auth inserts information about logged user in DB and returns logged user name, so I can analyse it later.

  • How does one access custom function in OBIEE RPD for Session Init Block SQL

    Hello:
    We are using SSO for authentication and authorization for OBIEE, using Init Blocks in the RPD and httpHeader as the source of variables in the Instanceconfig.xml file. (As long as the user is member of one group, the results are fine. However, as soon as the user is assigned to multiple groups, group values become URI-encoded.)
    To solve the problem of URI-encoding, we have deployed a function to the DB (ora 10gr2).
    The problem I am running into is that when I call the function from an Init Block (Security), OBIEE Presentation Services (OPS) acts as though the function does not exist or is not called.
    Initialization String: select group_OBIEE(WEBGROUPS) from dual
    ("group_OBIEE" is the function that was deployed.)
    Testing: Successfully tested the function in PL/SQL as well as using the Test button in RPD.
    Reason for the fuction: The function decodes the extra characters using a substr function. SSO uses Shibboleth for Authentication and Authorization.
    For example, for our group name, we expect to obtain the following value:
    edw:hrdir;edw:findir (2 groups separated by a semi-colon)
    However, we are obtaining the following: (Determined via the narrative view in Answers: @{biServer.variables['NQ_SESSION.GROUP']} )
    URI-ENCODED<edw%3ahrdir%3bedw%3bfindir>
    Please note: There are no such problems when we are passing only a single group value (i.e. edw:hrdir). So, in cases when we pass only for Group for the user, we are able to authenticate and authorize w/o a problem.
    Any suggestion on how to call the function or a better way to approach this problem?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    You don't need a function to assign the groups in your Init Block. In fact you should not use it. You need to use a standard select and define the Init Block as Row-Wise. This means the BI Server knows the Init Block will return more than one row. You select statement should look like this:
    SELECT 'GROUP', YOUR_GROUP_NAME FROM YOUR GROUP_USERS_TABLE WHERE YOUR_USER_ID_COLUMN = ':USER'

  • OBIEE 11g, BI Apps EBS: What are default security variables and Init Block

    Hi,
    We are implementing BI Apps 7.9.6.3 [OBIEE 11.1.1.1.5 with EBS modules]. Out of the box RPD and mappings.
    There are many VARIABLES and INIT BLOCKS in the RPD. Some of them are mainly for Siebel, Jd Edwards etc.
    I need to know what are the default variables and Init Block configures in RPD. Also it will be highly appreciated if anyone can point out what segments we should configure if we need to implement security with simple database table authentication with SSO?
    Thanks in advance.

    You should review this doc for the options for EBS/OBIA security:

  • Initialized values for Init blocks disappear at random

    Hi everyone
    I have a strange scenario and would appreciate your help with some ideas on how to troubleshoot this.
    We have OBIEE 10.1.3.4. It is a BI Apps 7.9.6.1 environment and OBIEE is integrated with EBS. Everything is working 100% fine and all initialiation blocks are initialized succesfully. Now iit has happened a couple of times that the init blocks seems to "lose" their initialized values. For example, CURRENT_FISCAL_YEAR will be initialized to 2011. Then out of the blue, next time you log in this init block has the value of 2008, which is the default initializer. The servers are all up and there are no errors.
    Any ideas about what is going on here?
    Thank you

    Check the SQL query in init block.It will take default value if SQL query does not fetch any record.
    I guess you have created a repository variable.

    Hi experts,
    We have row wise init block for project1(Connected to db1).
    and there are other project2(Connected to DB2) in single rpd.
    When db1 is down then we got the error in obiee appication.
    Requirement is if db1 is down only project1 should be down not the project2.
    is there any suggestion.

    Thanks for your help !
    I created a session variable UNAME
    SELECT 'VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.USER)' FROM DUAL
    Then I created the second variable with row wise init block.
    SELECT DISTINCT 'Department', Department_name FROM Department A WHERE A.LOGIN_ID= 'VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.UNAME)'
    in second init block i.e. for department i added the init block(Uname) in execute precedence.
    Still I am getting the same issue..any help pls?

    I don't think it is going to work unless you create the user in LDAP server. I am afraid this is the way your system is setup. If you want LDAP authentication then all your users need to exist there. Delivers runs iBots "on behalf" of users therefore the BI Server will try to authenticate them uding your defined LDAP authentication methods. I will suggest you don't use your OBIEE Administrator user to schedule iBots. Instead create a new user, which should exist in your LDAP server, and make this user part of the BI Server Administrator group. You should have the same priviledges as the Administrator.

  • Repository variable and Init block

    I created an Init block that is based off of a sql command in which the command is designed to give me the max date a table was updated after a data load.  Well the variable I created based off of this has a timestamp of today's date.  I want to create a report on the front end (actually just a column) that updates when a load has been completed.  I use this (TIMESTAMPDIFF ( SQL_TSI_MINUTE, VALUEOF(“LAST_UPDATE_DATE”)), CURRENT_TIMESTAMP)) for the column formula but I'm either running into errors or getting nothing at all.
    OBIEE 11.1.1.5
    Please Advise

    Hey......long time but here it is.   So I created an init block called Last_update_date and had it query a db table that automatically updates when a data load is complete.  I set a variable with the current timestamp.  Well When the table loads the variable locks in that time of the load.   On the front end I referenced the table in an expression and created a report around it.  I did a timestamp diff b/t current time and the time the init block locked in for the load, and called it ETL update column.  I created an agent that starts a purging/caching cascade with the ETL update report as the condition.

  • Can't connect to weblogic embedded LDAP from an init block

    Hi
    I am trying to use weblogic's embedded LDAP directory in an OBIEE RPD initialisation block, using 10g security model in OBIEE 11g. I need the internal user, BISystemUser, to be validated by an init block in the rpd, but I am not able to configure the weblogic LDAP in an init block, as it is done with AD, for example.
    I am following the instructions on "Viewing the Contents of the Embedded LDAP Server from an LDAP Browser" section of this document, http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/e13707/ldap.htm#i1104934 and I am getting: "LDAP bind failure: Can't connect to LDAP server". Weblogic is up and running, I can connect to its console, OBIEE, etc.
    I am using this settings on OBIEE:
    Hostname: localhost (I've tried using the actual hostname)
    Base DN: dc=bifoundation_domain
    Bind DN: cn=Admin
    Port: 7001
    (I've already reset LDAP's Admin password to a known value).
    The curious thing is that I can connect to the same LDAP using the same settings with LDAPExplorerTool2 opensource tool.
    Does anyone have an idea what else is missing?
    Thank you.

    i also have this problem..do u have any solution?

  • ORA-12519 TNS NO APPROPRIATE SERVICE HANDLER - ERROR

    Hi,
    We are using JDeveloper 11g for developing our web applications in our company and connecting oracle database through DB Connectivity option. We give the informations like username, password, hostname, sid, port number for getting the DB connectivity and developing web applications through ADF Faces in JDeveloper 11g, and around 25 people are getting connected to Database and developing their respective pages.
    For first 30 minutes there is no DB problem, working quitely. After 30 minutes we are getting the error ORA-12519 TNS No appropriate service handler error, we tried to solve this problem by raising process number to 200 in init.ora file and killed the inactive sessions by getting session id from V$session table and restarted the DB Server. But still we are having this problem ORA-12519, after 30 minutes of starting the DB Server.
    Can anyone suggest or help to overcome this problem ORA-12519.

    In the past few days I have been getting the following popup when I use firefox as my browser: Exc in ev handl: Error: Bad NPObject as private data!
    I assume it came from your latest update. I have windows vista with a 64 bit processor, and I am using the latest version of firefox. I checked to see if I was getting the same error message with explorer and I am not. It appears to be some sort of conflict with java script. Can this be corrected?

    NO -- I use it to protect my surfing! Why must FireFox insist on constantly breaking 3-rd party vendor apps!?! Even IE doesn't do this.
    For all the ballyhoo about FF and how great it is -- it ISN'T when it comes to how it supports other companies apps. (RealPlayer, Google, McAfee, etc.)
    Shame on them. I shouldn't have to give up functionality, and in this case protection -- just to use FF

  • MDX query in Init Block

    hi,
    Need a help regarding the Initialization block which connects to a Essbase and fetches the results using a MDX query.
    I need to get the Max of the month cube column and put in a variable.
    The cube time hierarchy contains the column at the 5th physical level with values as 2008 August, 2008 December, 2009 January and 1994 March etc.
    Now I want to get the Max of the value i.e. 2009 January.
    I saw another Init block with the query. This query gave result as 1994 March.
    select
    {} on columns,
    {ClosingPeriod([DEPMTI01].Generations(5))} on rows
    from [XXX.YYY]
    Now when I modified the query to below and run it throws an syntax error.
    select
    {} on columns,
    {Max([DEPMTI01].Generations(5))} on rows
    from [XXX.YYY]
    Please help me out with the correct way on writing the MDX so as I can fetch my desired result of 2009 January.

  • Retriving a cookie variable in a init block

    Hello
    I configured obiee for sso.
    Here is my instance config:
    <Auth>
    <SSO enabled="false">
    <ParamList>
    <!--IMPERSONATE param is used to get the authenticated user's username and is required -->
    <Param name="IMPERSONATE" source="cookie" nameInSource="SSOUSERNAME"/>
    <Param name="NQ_SESSION.TICKETID" source="cookie" nameInSource="TICKETID"/>
    </ParamList>
    </SSO>
    </Auth>
    Here is my init block in the repository
    SELECT ':USER' FROM dual where obiee_auth_api.validate_and_expire_ticket(':USER', ':NQ_SESSION.TICKETID') = 'Y'
    When I run that, I dont get logged in.
    If I replaced ':NQ_SESSION.TICKETID' by a hard-coded ticket id like 'xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx' it works and I'm logged in.
    So I guess I'm not retrieving the variable value correctly.
    Does someone know how to do that?
    Thanks

    Do the cookie names match exactly with the cookie generated on your system? It is case sensitive.

  • Has no value definition - Session INIT Block.

    Hi,
    I have a Session initialization block for Fetching Departments from a Security table for the user logging in.
    One user can have Multiple Departments assigned to him, so i enabled Row-wise initialization in INIT Block.
    But when a user not assigned to any departments logs in, i am getting 'Session variable has no value definition' error in all the reports. But i should instead pass a default value when SQL in INIT Block is not returning anything. Like '0'.
    How can i do this? please respond.
    Thanks
    Swami

    Hi Swami,
    When the query fetches a result set, the variable gets initialized.
    But, when the query doesn't fetch any rows, the variable doesn't gets initialized and hence "no value definition" errors out.
    So, to avoid this,
    In the query itself, place an exception condition which returns '0'.
    select dept_name from table
    where user_name = ':user'
    UNION
    select '0' from table
    where user_name <> ':user'or you can use like this
    select CASE WHEN user_name = ':user' THEN dept_name ELSE '0' END
    from tableP.S: Query written orally. (Pls adjust the query accordingly)

    Raghu

    Hi Experts,
    I ahve requirement where i need to pick the department of loged in users in dashboard prompt.
    So I created the session variable with row wise and written the query:
    SELECT DISTINCT 'Department', Department_Name FROM tableA WHERE A.LOGIN_ID= ':USER'
    But I get this error in answers:

    SELECT 'VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.USER)' FROM DUAL
    Then I created the second variable with row wise init block.
    SELECT DISTINCT 'Department', Department_name FROM Department A WHERE A.LOGIN_ID= 'VALUEOF(NQ_SESSION.UNAME)'
    in second init block i.e. for department i added the init block(Uname) in execute precedence.
    Still I am getting the same issue..any help pls?
    Thanks.
