Handling of base64 encoded body for message/rfc822

As I understand the mime spec allows only "7bit", "8bit", or "binary" for the body of a "message/rfc822" entity
However, it looks like Outlook is generating these under some circumstances (I have supplied a sample below). When attempting to read these via the JavaMail API the message content is empty and instead ends up in the header fields.
Is there a workaround or setting to handle these base64 RFC822 attachments in JavaMail?
Here's a stripped down sample of the message with the RFC822 attachment that I'm trying to handle:

Thanks for the info and suggested workaround. Would be neat to have a configurable option in 1.4.4 since info on the web suggests there are other email systems generating this rubbish.
The customer who generated the emails is using Outlook 2007 with the Google Apps Sync for Outlook. I haven't been able to replicate in Outlook 2007 so might be related to the connector. I'll do some more testing before reporting the problem to the appropriate organization!

  • Mail shows blank body for messages

    sometimes mail refuses to show the bodies of certain messages for me.
    typical sequence:
    1 start mail.app
    2 use it for a while (working normally)
    3 notice that certain message bodies appear "blank"
    when #3 occurs, i select a message in list view and the preview window (where you usually see the contents or body of the message) is totally blank. once this happens for one message, it seems to also happen for many of my other messages, too. that is, if i try to select a different message (even one whose body i was just reading a few seconds ago), it now shows up with a blank preview window. i also try double-clicking to open the message in it's own window - the body part of the window is blank. i try printing the message - the body part comes out blank.
    if i quit mail and restart and come back and view the same message, i can see the body ok (for a while, at least - until the problem eventually happens again). thus, this feels to me more like an issue of some kind of memory leak or some system resource being exhausted rather than some corruption of my mail files or preferences.
    some things i have noticed:
    - if i go to view->message->plain text alternative, i can sometimes see a plain text view of the message. this works for certain messages. for other messages (which seemingly don't have plain text alternatives) i can't do this. and for certain messages (seemingly those which were sent as raw text), i can see their bodies without doing this. the pattern seems to be that i can view text-only messages or plaintext-views of messages which provide them but i can not view them as formatted text.
    - i can always view the raw text of messages.
    - once this problem occurs, if i try to compose a new mail message, the window pops up and looks normal except i can not select the body part of the message. that is, hitting tab which usually works to move through the header fields and puts the cursor in the body field, simply fails to move the cursor to the body. clicking directly on the body just causes the cursor to disappear. so it is impossible to compose a new message.
    - once the problem occurs in a particular instantiation of mail.app, it never seems to go away. the fix i know of is to quit mail. that always seems to make it go away, though only temporarily.
    i'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem and may have any hints as to the root cause. i should warn that i am a a bit skeptical of claims of simple fixes such as simply deleting and rebuilding the envelope database, deleting preferences, etc., because i already know that the problem is tricky in that it goes away with every restart of mail.app anyway which can lead to false reinforcement of various theories.

    Mulder wrote:
    That's nonsense; the problem doesn't go away, it merely doesn't manifest immediately, which tells us it's still there. More often than not, there is a simple fix for an underlying issue; of course, if you'd prefer something much more complicated, I'm sure we can give you all those machinations.
    sorry - i should have been more precise and said the symptoms go away after restarting mail. i said what i said because my experience is that this type of scenario sometimes tends to lead people to conclude falsely that they have identified a solution when in fact they have not. this is why, for example, "reset pram" always was claimed a solution to dozens of problems for which it had absolutely no connection. it was because merely restarting the machine (an essential precursor to resetting pram) made symptoms go away in many cases.
    as to your specific point, i have rebuilt envelope index in the recent past and i'm still having the problem. i can't say for sure that it is not the case that something messed up the file in the past and has now messed it up again, so i will give it a try.
    thanks.

  • "current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are invalid" message

    I have some files I am working with. Details and what happened:
    Had some music files where I was doing some trimming/splitting. Files worked fine in itunes.
    Open the files in Quicktime Pro 7 to trim them. Exported to aif.
    Opened the files with itunes. They open and play just fine.
    In Itunes I click"create AAC version" to convert them.
    I receive the message "An error occurred while trying to import the file. The current encoder settings for bit rate and sample rate are not valid for this file."
    I don't know what to do from here. Suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Make sure that the AIFFs that you export are set for 16 bit PCM.
    Also, assuming that you are using 44.1 kHZ sampling in your AIFFs, make sure that you are not trying to use 48 kHz in the AAC.

  • Mail for Exchange with error "Body Fetch Message T...

    Hi,
    I am just got the Nokia E71, and had installed the Mail for Exchange version 2.0.5(5), and had set all the required configuration (Exchange Server Name, UserName, Passowrd, Domain). But when I do the SYNC, it got the "System Error" from the log, and I check on the "admin_log1.txt", it show that "Body Fetch Message Too Large" error.
    Any ideal on the error ? I have check the Access Point, there is working fine, as I can us the web browser on the phone, and no proxy setting
    I also check all the Exchange configuration setting with using the Windows Mobile PDA phone to do the SYNC with our company Exchange server, it work fine with all the given configuration.
    Please help.
    Thank You very Much.

    Is Mail for exchange working after the update? I am able to setup my company email, but mails are not getting downloaded. I tried entering a wrong password for my company email (after deleting my profile), just to check if mfe is able to connect properly with my company email server. It is able to identify that the email password i entered was incorrect. Also when I enter the correct password, setup finishes successfully. But its not retrieving any emails. I am sure of the settings, since the same settings were working earlier. Only thing i am doubtful about is the port number. Port number by default comes as 443. Does it need to change? Is MFE working for anyone? My company email is ************@hcl.com. Can you pls suggest?

    Hello Anee
    Events are not used for this kind of message handling.
    If you want to collect all messages then use a message handler (see sample report ZUS_SDN_ABAP_OO_MSG_HANDLING ).
    Alternatively, you may define an exception class and raise a class-based exception which contains the detailed error message.
    The following sample report is based on the more elaborate Wiki posting

    Requesting Technical Information on a Workflow Message Body

    Notification -> Notification of Payment to Employee by Direct
    Deposit(DD_PAYMENT_TO_EMP)
    Message -> Notification of Payment to Employee by Direct Deposit (OIE)(OIE_DIRECT_PAYMENT_TO_EMP)
    There is an enhancement request from our Client to add a Payment Date to the Notification
    DD_PAYMENT_TO_EMP Body. But, if we look at the Worflow, both Text Body and HTML
    Body of Message OIE_DIRECT_PAYMENT_TO_EMP is Empty.
    Following are my questions:
    1) Where exactly is this Body getting prepared and rendered ?
    2) What are the technical components involved here ?
    3) What is the Package.procedure if its a PLSQL or What is the CO/VO/Page name if its a OAF?

    Thanks for the input Pillai.
    Anyways, I had already tried your approach 1 of Item attribute PAYMENT_DATE to the message OIE_DIRECT_PAYMENT_TO_EMP, and setting a value to PAYMENT_DATE in the process before the Notification is sent out. But it did not work out.
    In Approach 2, where do we set the notification body using OAF or PL/SQL ? which OAF page or which PLSQL package ? I have almost checked most of the AP Packages, but was unable to find.
    Any other/more thoughts ?
    Thanks

    Is there a way in XML gateway to encode the payload automatically to base64 encoding so that it can accommodate the unicode
    Is there any way to encode the order information from EBS tables to base64 format in the outbound SOAP request ? Is this supported . If yes, how.?
    Does this involve customization. Is it possible to use encoder/decoder provided in sites such as XSL on top of XML : http://gandhimukul.tripod.com/xslt/base64-xslt.html
    Basically, They are trying to use XML Gateway to send and receive messages to a Trading Partner via SOAP. The issues is
    1. Outbound: The TP web service can only receive xml content that is encoded in base 64 binary format. How do we configure to encode content using base64
    2. Inbound: They want to receive messages using the SOAP architecture into XML gateway.
    Please let us know if you have any detailed configuration document for this purpose. Please advise and share relevant details.

  • Base64 encode

    Hi,
    We have to provide a conversion of blobs to base64 in order to exchange data with
    a 3th party. I wrote the following function which is used to format an xml-message.
    Problem is the supplier reads this data with a .net decode of base64 complains it's invalid and it
    sees some lines with more than 76 characters which seems to be not correct.
    Any ideas what is wrong are greatly appreciated.

    Yep, thats what I told you.
    I have modified your code slightly.
    This definitely produces your output.
    Note that you were not using an oracle_directory for p_dir.
    You should have said create or replace directory p_dir as 'your_location';
    Instead you had p_dir varchar2(200) := 'your location';
    The problem with the use of utl_file.put is you have to output a byte at a time. You were trying to output an entire clob, which is why it fell over.
    Note: I also removed your exception handler as this just masks where the error is.

  • File saveAsOpen and Base64 encoding...

    In order to send the activeDocument to a web service, i need to save is as a file image, and send in an xml format.
    Thus, i also need to encode it in Base64.
    At this point everything is OK.
    But between the saveAs of the file, its reopening, and its encoding, its corrupted.
    I receive an error on the Mongrel server.
    The Base64 encoder seems to work well, the rest of the code seem to be also ok, so I think my problem is either I do not save it correctly, either i do not reopen it correctly...
    Please save me :(
    Here is the code :
              /* STEP 1 : save current document as image file (temporary) */
              var docRef = activeDocument;
              var filepath=app.path.toString()+"/"+docRef.name+".jpg";//create the image file in the installation folder of Photoshop
              var file = new File(filepath);
              //var options = new ExportOptionsSaveForWeb();
              //options.format = SaveDocumentType.PNG;
              var options = new JPEGSaveOptions();
              options.quality=8;
              docRef.saveAs (file, options, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
              //docRef.exportDocument (file, ExportType.SAVEFORWEB , options);
              file.close();
    /* I code here dialogBox and httpCOnenction object creation
    that do not need to be written here
    (but if you think it's important, i can give you the full script)
              var f= new File(filepath);
              f.open();
              var buffer = f.read(f.length);
              f.close();
    I build an HttpConnection object called "send"
    */                 send.request='"+f.name+""+f.length+""+base64encode(buffer)+"';
    Here is the Server error :

  • Improper decoding of base64 encoded attachment on Exchange 2007 SP1

    I'm using Exchange 2007 SP1. My java application sends email to users of exchange 2007 SP1. The email contains an email as an attachment which is base64 encoded . This email when sent to users on exchange 2007 SP1 shows blank attachment. The same email when sent to users on different exchange (e.g. Exchange 2003) shows the correct attachment i.e. the attachments are not blank. While sending the mail i'm setting name of the attachment in Content-Type header but it is not there when we look at the rfc contents of the mail received on ex 2007 SP1.  It seems exchange 2007 is not able to decode the base 64 contents properly. Below are the rfc contents of the mail which show few headers in the attachment part instead of the base64 content. Please suggest some solution to it. It's urgent.

    Did you ever this to work ?

  • Since Firefox 4, I can get a background image to work using base64 encoded, but not a local file, this worked in Firefox 3, how do I resolve this.

    Using either of the 4 examples shown below, to have a background image display inside about:blank worked in Firefox 3.x (using Stylish add-on), however since Firefox 4, only using the base64 encoded version of images works. Is there any way to fix this so I don't have to encode every image I wish to use? Encoding the image makes the stylish file absolutely huge, & a real pain to keep encoding whenever I want to change the image.
    body:empty { background: url("resource:/res/images/OnFire.jpg")
    body { background-image: url("resource:/res/images/OnFire.jpg")
    body:empty { background:url("data:
    body { background-image: url("data:
    I've also previously disabled most of the add-ons, except for Status-4-Evar, Stylish, & Firebug, in an attempt to see if something else was interfering, but no change.
    I can supply a copy of the previously working (FF 3.x) code to some of the about:blank styles if needed for testing purposes.

    Type '''about:addons'''<enter> in the address bar to open the '''Add-ons Manager.'''
    Hot key; '''<Control>''(Mac:<Command>)'' <Shift> A)'''
    On the left side of the page, select '''Plugins.'''
    Is it listed here? Select '''Disable.'''

  • Base64 encoded attachments misunderstood by recipients

    My boss uses Mail.app, and a number of people have reported that they can never open her attachments. When I look at the files they receive from her, they appear to be base64 encoded, and indeed decoding them makes them perfectly readable. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the built-in apps in OS X can do this decoding. Also, not all of the recipients use Macs.
    At first I thought that the issue might be that she was not using the 'Windows friendly attachments'. However, I tried sending a message from another coworker's computer without selecting that option, and it worked fine. I then discovered that the problem is that if she drags her attachments into the message rather than selecting them via 'add attachment', they don't work. Basically, if the attachment is inline rather than at the end of the message.
    I still thought that using 'Windows friendly attachments' would fix the problem, so on another Mac I tried setting Mail.app to always send Windows Friendly attachments (To do this, just open Mail.app, make sure you aren't composing an e-mail, and then under Edit > Attachments, select 'Always send Windows Friendly attachments'). However, this didn't work, either.
    So, I think that the solution is just to tell her either to use the 'Add Attachment' button or to drag the file to the end of the message.
    It's a shame that inline attachments don't work for so many e-mail clients (notably Gmail). I don't think that this is an Apple innovation... is it?
    I hope that helps someone,
    Greg
