Handling unit mangement without Warehouse management

Hello,
We are working on a scenario, wherein we are planning to use handling unit management without warehouse management.Does HU management and WM go hand in hand?
Do you foresee any inconsistencies if HU management is implemented without WM?
What does SAP recommend?
Thanks,
Pankaj

Hello,
WM and HU functionality are independent solutions. WM and HU could be implemented based on your business scenarios. It is pretty common to have WM and HU solutions for the business.
It will be sort of difficult to answer about inconsistency in HU solution without WM. Based on what process you define and what are the intricacies involved you may or may not have true inconsistencies.
You could refer to the SAP best practices help library and see if for your business scenario SAP has a solution and that way you could best define an integrated solution.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,

  • RF guns for MB1B in plant without Warehouse managed.

    Hi Folks
Need your input on the below requirement.
We got requirement to do MB1B ( transfer posting sloc to sloc ) using RF guns  in the plants , those plants are not WM linked.
If it is not WM linked , can we do it  MB1B through RF without assigning in LM00 to create the Material document.
Because if i go to assign it is asking WM number ,since we dont have warehouse we want to do other way.
Please provide your inputs to proceed further.
    Selva

    Hello Selva,
RF Menu in SAP is designed for Warehouse Number so Go ahead and create one Warehouse number, but dont assign it to any plant/Sloc combination. Just create only.
Now you will be able to access LM00 transaction in SAP. so design screens and develope the program for MB1B and assign this program in RF menu. That's how you will be able to use Non WM transaction on scanner.

  • SAP Handling Unit Managment

    Hi folks,
I very urgently need some documents about SAP HUM.
    Can any one help me.

SAP HU - SAP Handling Unit Management (HUM)
The SAP HU is used for tracking the handling units used by the materials.  Some common handling units are packagings materials like cartons, pallets etc.
In the SAP system, the handling unit (HU) expands on the shipping unit. Handling units can be nested and you can also create new handling units from several handling units as often as you like. At the material item level, HUs contain the complete material identification, the quantity, and, in the case of serial numbers, the respective object list. Handling units have unique,
scannable identification numbers that can be developed according to standards such as EAN 128 or SSCC.
Handling units contain all inventory management information of the materials they contain that are maintained in Inventory Management. There are also status messages that you can call up at any time that indicate whether a handling unit is only planned or if the ship-to party has been notified of the arrival of this handling unit, or whether it is in the warehouse or has already been posted to goods issue. The integrated history function also records each business process in
the life cycle of each handling unit, meaning that you can track the handling unit’s path and development at any time.
Refer to : Logistics -> Central Functions -> Handling Unit Management
In HU-managed storage locations, all goods movements are executed through the specification of the respective HUs, and Inventory Management is performed through the handling units. If you are working without HU-managed storage locations, you can work with handling units (without stock information) as before in the delivery and in the shipment.
In HU-managed storage locations, materials can be managed in HUs only. Mixed stock made up of packed and non-packed materials within the same storage location are not supported. HUs can also be managed in interim storage types. Unpacking a material from a HU means that the stock of the material is posted to a storage location that is not HU-managed.
If you call up normal material movements in connection with an HU-managed storage location, a delivery is created, rather than a direct material posting, which has been the procedure up to now.
Please note that if you want to use 311 to move the material already in stock, but in a non HUM Storage Location and you want to transfer those materials into a HUM Storage Location 304.  If this is the case you can use the transaction VLMOVE with the destination plant and storage location. Before that you have to create the HU with the transaction code HU02 Storage location: where the material is and the status: in stock.
Handling units are unique at client level in at least one system. Using an indicator at client level, you can control whether you are going to work with the HU functions. Since the handling unit is a physical unit, the central logistics processes are controlled through the input of the handling unit identification. These processes include putaway, picking, and stock transfers, as well as goods receipts and goods issues.
A handling unit’s mobility can be limited if quality checks are active. Changes in the stock category caused by a quality inspection are made using a posting change in the handling unit.
There is also a report available that you can use to find and display handling units using different selection criteria such as material, packing instruction, or storage location.
Although the handling unit is basically a unit that remains constant in the system, you can change it by repacking the materials it contains. All the packing functions, such as packing, repacking, and unpacking, are completely supported by the handling unit functionality. In this way, handling units can be created in production, during goods receipt, or in the packing areas of the warehouse. If you have automatic packing, the handling unit is created from the packaging proposals defined in the system (from the packing instructions, for example).

  • Why do we use Handling Unit management  in SAP

    Hi Experts,
I would like to know about the handling unit management.
What is the use of using/implementing handling unit  management in SAP.
What is the need and what are the benefits.

    Hello Raj,
I am still aprehensive about the usage of handling unit mangament. I am reading it and it seems that we generally use a handling unit mangement with WM & without WM as well.
Is there any document from where we can understand about it?
Does the end user/customer know about this handling unit is it mentioned in his invoice or EDI?
Will the customer track shipments based on the handling units or is it only for internal purposes.......
What i really dont understand is that relation between the packing instructions and handling units....
how and what level do they differ from  each other......
    thanks

    Hi
    Handling Unit Management
    Purpose
You can use Handling Unit Management (HUM) to reflect packing-based logistics structures in the SAP System. Using this method, you track the movements of entire handling units and the materials they contain rather than tracking each material individually.
When you base logistics processes on handling units, goods movements processing is made easier, which in turn optimizes all logistics operations. This simplified processing includes the existing packing function in shipping and warehouse processing in the Warehouse Management system, which is expanded here.

  • Picking handling unit in Delivery

    Hi,
I have a scenario in which I want to pick handling units from stock into the delivery. At the time of picking in delivery transfer order is created, but warehouse management is not in the scope. Can we pick handling unit in delivery without warehouse management.?
    Regards
    Falgun

    Dear Falgun,
I think its not possible. if i understood your question correctly, that you have created an order and for that you are doing picking/packing, you should create handling unit first and then allocate it in the material master for that perticular material in material master MM01 ->basic data tab under packing material data.
    hope its helpful for you.

So how to to configure this.
    Please guide me.

    Regards
    Ashis

    Hi,
Sometime back Allabaqsh Patil has forwarded me this material for my question on packaging. I did it and it worked well.
You can follow the same procedure and do it. It will work for you. The details are given below.
    hi,
before creating the packaging material you have to go to:
    IMG-Logistics Execution-Shipping -Packing.
    1. Define packaging material types- it can be anything like boxes crates, etc. in this you have to maintain the output determination procedure, output type, plant determination, packaging material category, generate delivery items, number assignment. you can copy from standard also.
    2. Then go to define material group for packaging materials - here you maintain the four digit code and the description. Actually, this group is nothing but similar products which require similar packing products. For Ex. Nokia Phones all types they are basically packed first into a polythene bag. So here nokia phones can become a material group for packaging materials and polythene bag can become the packaging material type which can include different sizes and types of polythene bags.
    3. Define Allowed Packaging Materials - Here you assign the shipping group for packaging materials to the packaging material type. This is related to your mterial master data of the packaging material which you create.
    4. Now go to MM01 to create a packaging material. use material type as Packaging material then inside the system will take the item category group as VERP. Then in the Basic Data1 screen you have the material group for packaging material (MGPM). Slect the proper one. Now in the Sales:General/ Plant screen you have to maintain data regarding the packaging. you select the MGPM same as the basic data 1 screen, then select the packaging material type, the allowed pkh weight, allowed pkg volume. This is important because if the weight of your finished item is 2 KG and in the allowed pkg weight you enter only 1.5 KG, then while you carry out the packing process in delivery, the system will give you error," packaging weight exceeded." The assignment in the IMG creen for Define allowed packaging materials should be same as u mention in the material master. Then save your material master for packaging material.
    5. VA01 create the order, save it.
    6. VL01N enter shipping point, go to edit - pack- you will face a screen with 2 parts. In the top part you select your packaging material in which you want to pack your finished item, enter the system will assign a number to that material. Now select the Material in the top part and the finished one in the lower part and click on the Icon Pack. Here one thing has to be taken care of. Suppose if you want to pack only one finished item in one packaging material, then in the lower part of the screen you have a field for partial quantity here you chnge it to 1. system will prompt quantity changed. now you select the material in the top part and the one in the lower part and click on the PER PART. QTY ICON. In this way the system will pack only one finished item in a single packaging material. Packing is done go back, select the picking and do the PGI. save the delivery and create the invoice.
    HANDLING UNITS.
Basically handling units come into picture when you want to carry out multi level packing. suppose you want to pack Nokia phone first into a polythene bag, then this polythene bag is again packed in to box. like that. then this box will become a handling unit. For this go to :
IMG - Logistics General - Handling Unit Mangement - Basics.
    1. In basics you do the same thing as you did in the packing in logistics execution. like you create the packaging material type, then MGPm and their assignment.
    2. Then go to External Identification - and maintain the number ranges forthe handling units that you want and assign the same to your pckaging material type.
    3. Now that you have done everything, create the order, save it, in VL01N, enter shipping point, go to edit - pack - do the same thing as i ahve told you in the step no. 6 (above). now after doing select the PACK HUs TAB . NOW IN THIS SCREEN IN THE TOP PART YOU WILL SEE THE ALREADY PACKED MATERIAL. In that same part again select your next packaging material that is BOX. enter the system will assign the number to the BOX.
    4. Now select the material which you have just entered and the materials which were already packed in the lower part of the screen and click on the ICON PACK.
This is what I know about the packing process and the handling unit. you have many things in the handling unit management whichcan be very useful for automatic packing.
HOPE I AHVE ANSWERED YOUR QUERY.
PLEASE REWARD VALUABLE POINTS IF SOLUTION FOUND USEFUL.

  • Warehouse Management-Material

    Hi ALL,
How can we know if the Material is warehouse managed..? The material can be defined to be warehouse managed in Material Master...warehouse mgmt 1 tab...is it rite? ...
If I select the warehouse mgmt tab of material master i get an error  saying "Warehouse mgmt 1 is not active for the  organisation level." and it asks me to enter warehouse number..So does this error message mean that Material is not Warehouse Managed....?
Now how to make material Warehouse managed in this case...? Also if the material is made warehouse managed then is it possible to make the material without warehouse managed again....? If yes then ...How?
    Thanks in advance..
    Regards,
    Ameya K.

    Hello Ameya,
<b>How can we know if the Material is warehouse managed..? The material can be defined to be warehouse managed in Material Master...warehouse mgmt 1 tab...is it rite? ...</b>
If material is managed for warehosue then you will be able to see material record in table MLGN (Material Data for Each Warehouse Number). This is for consultant level.
If any user wants to see whether material is managed for any warehouse, then go to MM03 tcode, give the mateiral number and press enter, select the WM view 1 & 2 and press enter, when it comes to organization level press F4 in the WHN field, it it is maintained then it will pull that WHN with X mark.
<b>If I select the warehouse mgmt tab of material master i get an error saying "Warehouse mgmt 1 is not active for the organisation level." and it asks me to enter warehouse number..So does this error message mean that Material is not Warehouse Managed....?</b>
Warehouse is activated for the combination of Plant and Storage Location, so you need to create the warehouse number in Log execution area and assign it with Plant/SLoc combination in Organization assignment.
<b>Now how to make material Warehouse managed in this case...? Also if the material is made warehouse managed then is it possible to make the material without warehouse managed again....? If yes then ...How?</b>
Once you assign warehouse number to plant/Sloc in assignment and you need to complete the other settings related to WH. Then when you do any inventory transaction which is relevent to that Plant/Sloc combination (which is assigned to WH number) then the system will process Warehouse transactions.
If you have carried out some transaction with Warehouse level, it is not advisable to delete material for WM view (MM06), but you need to complete the open transactions and made the inventory zero for that material then only you need to deactivate/delete WM view for that material.
    Hope this helps.

  • Handling unit without inventory management

    Hi Experts,
In our scenario, we have Goods reciept from production into Storage location 1000 which is IM managed, Later the stocks are transfer posted into storgae location 1100 which is HU/WM managed. Now in 1100 i have found HU's which have been created with status 'Handling unit without Inventory management'.
Can someone explain to me what does it mean when a HU gets created with this status? under which scenario does the system create the HU with this status?
Also when this HU is scanned for putaway the system gives error message Handling unit does not exist in SAP. Can someone let me know the resolution or the root cause for this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Harish

    Hi,
The above mentioned status is when a Handling Unit created, but the Inventory management is not yet posted for the content materials of the HU
I can give an example:  Created a Inbound Delivery for material XXX. Then a HU is created in Packing screen, but the PGR is not yet done. At this stage, HU has the same status
    Hope this helps
If the GR/GI is reported for HU contents, then the HU status will change. With you case, a Handling Unit is just created, but no further tansaction like, packing, GI or GR is done.
