Hard drive exchange between MacBook(2007) and MacBookPro(2009)
I have a MacBook(2005) that I upgraded with a 500GB hard drive and other stuff. I just did a fresh install of Snow Leopard and all my settings are right where I want them and it fells perfect. Currently I am using 300GB of hard drive space.
However, every AppleGeek likes new hardware every once in a while, and so I went out to buy a new MacBookPro(2009) - the model that comes with a 250GB hard drive.
My problem now is that I can not use the Migrate Assistant because the new hard drive has less capacity than I have files to migrate. And I want to put in the 500GB HD anyways.
So a question occurred to me: Is it possible to take out the 500GB HD (from Macbook2007) and put it into the new MacBookPro(2009)? Can I keep running my system as it is by just switching hard drives?
Basically the question targets at the hardware support of Snow Leopard. When Snow Leopard installs, does it install the whole package all the time. Are the files equal on any machine, or will it be a different installation ("drivers") based on the hardware snow Leopard is suppose to run on?
I remember, that I once hooked up my MacBook(2007) HD to my MacMini(2006) via usb, and I was able to option boot into my MacBook(2007) System on the MacMini(2006). But I did not test it for a long time and so my sequential question is: does it slow down the system?

I did the swap of hard drives but because I knew that Quark and Adobe programs recognize the computer, I deactivated the software on the old computer, then reactivated on the new one. I did forget to deauthorize iTunes and Audible. With Audible I just added the authorization but with iTunes I had to go into my account and deauthorize all of my computers because I was at the 5 computer limit and I didn't want to put the drive back in the old computer, deauthorize, then bring it back to the new.
I had considered booting the old computer from the new one in Target Disk Mode and deauthorizing iTunes that way. It might have worked. And Time Machine was able to tell that the old disk was in a new computer. It warned me that if I associated the backup sparse file with the new computer there was no going back, but it was much better than what others have experienced with Time Machine making you back up again from scratch. Some printers were not "found" and I had to go back through preferences and just point them out again. Other than that, pretty painless.

I recently installed a new hard drive in a MacBook 2007 and then 10.6.3. I'd like to be able to Sync iCal to the calendars I have created on other devices (new iCloud account and an ME account). I can't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 because the MacBook is 32 bit. Just looking for a workaround as this is not a primary device.
You should update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 - you can download it here; however it's still not compatible with iCloud and though you can connect to access your email you cannot access any other of iCloud's facilities.
However some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. I've not tried it: use at your own discretion.

Are you sure you can't upgrade to Lion? It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which you may well have, though it also needs 2GB RAM so you might need to add additional RAM (might not be worth it for what you want). The published specs don't mention 32 or 64 bit. You can buy Lion by ringing the Apple Store at the number at bottom left of this page. -
I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
Any suggestions?

Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
Some thoughts:
• The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
• The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
• If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.

The hard drive on my MacBook died and I had it replaced. Now I can't locate my website files and every time I try to open my finder/idisk it looks for a name and password (even reset my apple id as prompted) I keep being told that it's the wrong name or password? Any suggestions out there
Arty ~ Welcome to the Support Communities. iWeb can't import/open published HTML/media files on your iDisk. iWeb can only open its key Domain file which contains your site data — it's usually located here:

Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated it from Lion to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. They also didn't put Pages, Keynote or Numbers back on it until I argued with them. Of course, I didn't have my data backed up. My hard drive was destroyed when I tried to install the update of Mavericks myself. I should not have to buy iWeb and iPhoto when I already had them. Suggestions?

have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome. -
Graphic card problem maybe? Since when I have changed the hard drive to my macbook pro and I installed all the new softwares, my mac is very slow and the screen gives crazy pictures,could maybe be the graphic card, does anybody have experienced this?
after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

I had to install a new hard drive on my macbook air and now I am getting unkown error whenever I try to login to itunes. Apple support suggested I reset my password so I did that and still the problem is occuring. Itunes and the app store are working normally on my ipad and iphone. Does anyone know what the problem is. The new disk was installed in France coz I am on holiday there. could there be something I need to change in my settings? I need help urgently as I am trying to finish an assignment and need to be able to access and download from icloud.

Hello. I have installed a new hard drive on my Macbook Pro with OSX Tiger. I tried to reinstall Logic 8 Pro but it refuses the serial number when I try to install it. I took the serial number from the "About" box when Logic was still installed but no good. The software was originally an upgrade, and I don't think I have the disks for the previous version. What do I do? This is important because I only use the computer for music. Thank you.
There's actually an even simpler solution that doesn't include buying a new version of Logic. He can use his original version easily. Of course, that depends if the OP knows how to effectively use his computer though...

HELP! The hard drive on my Macbook died and i lost everything.
A week ago my MacBook died apple were going to see if any data was still on the hard drive, they called today and said that i lost everything. Three years of work gone. I cant believe it.
Just before the Mac died i had put all my music on Apple TV, does anyone know if you can pull all the songs and data back from apple tv.
Does anyone know of a good but cheap company who might be able to recover the data.

A fresh hard drive, im totally gutted :-((If this was a warranty repair then you are out of luck. Under the terms of the warranty if they replaced your defective drive with a new one then the old one becomes their property. If you want it back you will have to pay them or attempt to work out some other arrangement with the but they are not going to just let you borrow it without some security. I would not take that chance either and if it was your business you would not either. Apple has to have the drive to send back to the vendor for credit. How do they know that you will return it?
There are no "cheap recovery services" If you send it off be prepared to spend a lot of money. Drive Savers and the others can do it, but it isn't cheap. I have never checked but have heard that the prices run in to the many thousands of dollars even for small drives.
I guess it depends on how valuable the data is to you. -

Open System Preferences > ICloud
Make sure Contacts and Calendars are selected.
iCloud should sync your data automatically. -

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List. -
I just installed a new 250 GB SATA hard drive on to my 2007 macbook computer as the old one failed. I had backed up my old hard drive on to a 250 GB external hard drive using time machine via a USB cord. I am having trouble locating my music and photo files to transfer them into itunes and iphoto on my new hard drive. I have signed in to my itunes account, where it shows my app and book purchases, but not my music purchases. I have over 1,000 songs purchased. Any help would be appreciated- Thanks!

Since you have a current Time Machine backup of your computer you should be able to use the Migration Assistant to recover your music and photos.

Have a MacBook Pro running Lion (10.7.9) and an IMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Want to Back up both images and restore on opposite machines. Essentially swapping images between hard drives. Is this possible and any "gotcha's" to look for? Thanks
If the MBP came with Lion, it most likely won't boot with SL. Easiest thing to do is create a bootable backup/clone of each to an ext HD, partitioned to hold each on a separate volume, ensure that the original machines can boot with their respective clones, and finally, try booting the other machine with the other clone. Images are useless since you can't boot with them to test them out.

It depends upon exactly what you want to do with your Mac. My old Late 2007 17" MacBook Pro only has 4GB RAM and it works fine. It is a little slow if I am doing anything involving heavy computing (rendering video, compiling programs, etc.) but it works just fine. In most cases, the increased RAM will help performance, but the cost can be fairly high with an older machine like you have.

Need to purchase a serial ATA drive, but I keep reading that trying to format and/or partition the drive for use with the original Tiger install disk is unsuccessful and that I would have to update to a newer OS before I can do that.
I have Leopard as the current OS, and that is in my backup files from Time Machine, but I do not have a disk with Leopard.
Wondering the best course of action and/or if someone had success wit ha particular Serial ATA using the Tiger disks
Thanks!All Intel Macs have always use SATA drives, so all Intel versions of OS X support them including Tiger. I don't know what you've been reading. However, since you have Leopard I don't see what the problem would be because you don't need to install Tiger unless your Leopard disk is strictly an updater disc.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.
