Hard drive recovery and replacement

I have a T43 1875. The hard drive has gone out - can't access operating system, clicking sound, blue button doesn't work. I have obtained the set of boot, rescue and recovery disks and a new hard drive. I can follow the video to physically replace the hard drive. As I understand it, I just follow the instructions (including moving the CD drive to the first position) that came with the disks and follow the prompts and the new drive will be loaded as when it was a new computer. However, I thought I would first use the Rescue and recovery disk on the old drive to see if I could get some files used since my last backup. I can't find detailed instructions of what to expect from the rescue program and how to get the files if possible. Does someone have a link that would help? Thanks.

Restoring the OS will probably be the least of your problems   This is not going to make you happy, unless you have one of the magic hard drives:

  • HELP"apple application support not found when installing itunes after a hard drive crash and replace

HELP"   error "apple application support not found" when downloading itunes after a hard drive crash and replacement????

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • HP Pavillion DV7 Hard Drive failure and replacement

    Hi all,
As the title mentions, I have an HP Pavillion DV7, p/n: NB406AV. The SMART is showing an imminent hard drive failure. The primary hard disk quick test stops at 4% and shows a code "303" for hard disk 1. It also stops at 4% when doing a full HD scan.
So, I'll be replacing the HD. I have no idea what to buy, and I plan on buying a non HP HD. Can anyone tell me the specs I should look for? I'd like to get the biggest GB HD that will be compatible as well. Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
It usesSATA HDD. Some dv7 models use SATA II but many later models use SATA III. SATA III is backwrd compatible but more expensive. DV7 is a series of hundreds different models and you won't go wrong with SATA III drive. It can accept current generation HDD's. The following HHD is a good choice with a good price/performance ratio per Gb:
       http://www.seagate.com/au/en/internal-hard-drives/laptop-hard-drives/laptop-solid-state-hybrid-drive...
You can use 1Tb on your machine. New HDD's are thinner but the screws will be lined up and should be strong enough to hold the HDD in place.
    Regards.

  • Hard drive clone and replace

    Hello all,
I've recently discovered that the hard drive on my EliteBook 8730w tends to overheat & crash when I save large amounts of data. The HP service contractors are totally willing to replace my HD, but only if I take it with a fresh installation. Since I usually spend about two days installing all my CAD software and simulation tools, this is not an option for me.
Back when I was still a student I remember cloning a hard drive for an old desk top upgrade, it wasn't that difficult, and I can't understand why HP won't do an image swop or cloning or ghosting as some people call it? Are they worried about piracy issues or are they just lazy and ill equiped? Either way they iether think I'm a thief or they just don't want to give me a professional service.
In recent years I've been spoilt with an IT deparment who whould do this image swopping for me every time I got an updated workstation. The company I'm working at now doesn't have its own IT department, so I'm stuck between a faulty drive and half service from HP.
My question is this, is there any way that I can get the HP support contractors to clone and swop my hard drive?
If not, - is there any place where I can download decent  free cloning software so that yet again I can do this by myself?
    Thank you for reading

Thank you for the recomendation. As soon as I read the name Acronis I remembered that this is what I used when I was a student. Now that I know what to look for its just a matter of going through my old boxes in storage. - The things you forget you have...
I'm just fortunate that I know about cloning (and have the software) or else I would have had to get some of our simulation and CAD software vendors out to come and reconfigure a new installation for optimal performance (not free and time consuming).
I think I'll give the guys at HP a call in any case. - The way I see it;  if I was a tyre merchant I whould have decent hydrailic jacks to raise vehicles, and tire irons to loosen and tighten the nuts, they're just tools of the trade
Also if I go to a 5 star restaurant the waiter doesn't expect me to have a corkscrew in my pocket so that I can open up the bottle for him.
I mean HP is geared towards Professional service and its not as if I broke my brand new hard drive, so why should I buy the tools to fix it, - DIY style, - I don't think so, not if I paid $6000.00 for the machine plus took out an additional service waranty. I'll show them, I'll shake my fist and they'll feel my wrath... or maybe not.
Thanks again for the tip, now I'll be off to go build a bridge and get over it!

  • Can I do a complete recovery of hard drive recovery and everything t over without an external drive if I don't care to save anythingcm

having bad permission problems and just seems easier to start over can I do it without an external hard drive as long I'm not saving information

I have dozen OWC cases and drives and no issue so I know that they are good choice.
Don't know how much data and such and given the price of 1-2-3TB drives $160 for 1TB might be small but get the job done, while 3TB for $230 is a good drive + case investment to handle your needs and nice combo TimeMachien and other purposes - for external solution which you do want, so it can be safe and off line etc

  • Hard drive failure and replacement

My Macbook's hard drive failed the other day. I am currently in the market for a replacement internal drive. I remember that Apple used to sell the internal drives on their website but cant seem to find them anymore. Did they discontinue them for some reason or do they carry them in-store?

They can replace their hard drive for you at the Apple Store for a fee. Best to DIY.

  • Hard Drive crash and replaced: need to re-install. License issue which we have all information demonstrating it is good. How to allow it???

We need to re-install and no matter how we try the message is buy a new one. We don't need a new one, just need to use our original one.

I think this probably needs a ticket submitted to support unless someone moderates here who can reset your license.  I believe that your product was activated when your drive crashed and you obviously could not deactivate Adobe since the drive died.  I have a similar but worse problem because mine is an upgrade and I do not have the original Adobe X license.  Unless they have a way to take care of that type of situation, I may be out of luck.  I am going to submit a request for help (probably be calling them on Monday to see if I am out of luck or not.
Good luck!  I will be checking back to see if some kind person has a "for sure" solution to both of our woes.

  • Hard Drive Failure and Replacement Trouble

    Hello,
My Aluminum Powerbook G4 wasn't booting properly last week and then all of a sudden began not functioning (i.e. spinning wheel freezing, files disappearing) After verify and repair attempts the drive was rendered totally inoperable and will not boot at all. I managed to find these errors using the disk utility from the original OS disks " error code 2stf/8/3:ATA-100ata-6-Master
and "invalid node structure (4,335)" before the disk stopped working all together.
I purchased a hitachi 5K160 replacement drive and installed it. The new drive does not show up in the Disk Utility program when booted from the OS CD.
I opened the computer back up and rechecked connections. Everything seems fine.
    Again, the disk doesn't appear.
I opened the computer again and reinstaled the old drive to see if disk utility recognized that one.... Now it doesn't recognize the old drive.
Could I have damaged a pin connection? am I missing something? Do I have 2 non functioning drives? What else could it be?
Any advice will be much appreciated!!! Thank you.

    Steve:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I purchased a hitachi 5K160 replacement drive and installed it
The failure of your HDD to mount may be dure to one of several things.
    • The HDD itself. Can you give more specifics of the new HDD you installed, like that serial number or some way to better identify it?
    • Installation. There are a number of things here.
    - was the HDD oriented properly (label side up).
    - ribbon cable correctly and securely connected at the drive and at the logic board.
    - screws missing, or too tightly screwed in.
    - ribbon cable may be defective.
    • Some other hardware issue such as
    - bad RAM module
    - improperly seated or failing Airport Extreme card.
To begin your trouble shooting, boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk and run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests. It sometimes takes several repetitions of the tests (hours) for some intermittent issues to show up. At a later point it may be necessary to go back in and check out the installation.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

My old hard drive crashed and had to get it replaced. How do I reinstall my old library to the new hard drive from my iphone4s so I don't lose my music?

Officially you don't. Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
Note: The information below hasn't been updated since early 2013.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • My hard drive crashed and when I replaced it, I am unable to sync most of my music.  The message "file not found" appears.  I have all my music on my .  How can I upload these to iCloud or iTunes?

My hard drive crashed and I replaced it.  I also switched from ATT to Verizon for my iPhone.  Now when I sync with iTunes, only about a tenth of my songs are on the new iPhone.  one or two from each album.  I still have an iPad with all my songs on it.  I subscribed to music match, but when I try on the iPad it wants to match with iTunes and erase a\the music on the iPad.  I have no music on iCloud when I sign in.  Can anyone help me???

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

My hard drive fried and had to be replaced. I'm trying to install CS4 from my original discs but keep getting this error message - "One or more of the required components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard failed to install correctly". A customer service rep gave me a link to download off the Adobe site, but when I try to open the file to run it, I get this error message - "A problem occurred extracting the archive".
    Can anyone help?

Yep.  Nothing happens at all. Windows tries to execute the uninstaller, but I don't get any other screen and all activity stops for the MSI.  I monitored it in Process Monitor and the MSI executable appears, but is quickly ended, like it couldn't find anything or something.
It's as if windows has a blank entry in Programs and Features, because it used to show the size of the Adobe application in the "Size" column.  Now it's just blank.  Link to screenshot below:
    http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5006/screenshotcaf.jpg
Note the install date.  That's when I was able to successfully reinstall it.  Now I can't even do that.  I should also mention I tried Revo Uninstaller.  It deleted one small registry key, but nothing changed.
By the way, is the CS cleaner supposed to ask for a disc in the drive when you run it?  It refused to run unless I had one in it, so I used my install dvd.

  • HT1386 Ever since I had to replace my PC hard drive, my outlook contacts and calendar no longer sync.  It acts like it's syncing, but it isn't.  I now have two hard drives - c and g, but I'm pretty sure the Outlook data is still on c.  Any other ideas?

Hello - I just had to replace the hard drive on my pc, and now my Outlook calendar and contacts won't sync to my iphone 5s.  I ended up getting two hard drives (C and G), so I'm afraid that might have something to do with it - although I'm pretty sure Outlook files still live in the normal place on C. Itunes sync acts as if it's working, but nothing changes on my phone.  Any ideas?  Thanks!!
