The question - how, without opening iMac - using Terminal, can I find out, what Apple's serial number is on my Seagate hard drive?
I have a situation with iMacs in company I'm working. After multiple hard drive failures we have found out, that most of our iMacs had defective Seagate Hard Drives, which Apple provided replacement program. The program now is expired and it's impossible to find out, whether they had hard drives, that very easily may fail or not. I contacted Apple service and got comment, that problem was with hard drives, that had 13 numbers in serial number. Hard drives with 17 numbers were OK. The discussion is about Apple serial number for Seagate hard drive, not Seagate's (take a look on red square in image).
To my question, how can I find out, whether my hard drives have 13 or 17 symbols, I got answer, that we either have to open iMac and check it by ourselves (for ~30 iMacs it's not the greatest thing to hear) or that there is a special terminal command, which may return this number, but the guy didn't remember at the moment, which exactly.

System Profiler is the the command line tool for a lot of system info, however think it displays the same as the GUI (AFAIK).

Should give you the full report as text (probably the same info as enabling the full report in the GUI), you can pipe that to a file for easier searching…

I'm not sure that you can access that Apple specific number via the command line, I would hassle Apple some more - the serial and model number should be enough for them to tie into their databases and the tiny text above that info tells you to refer to the OEM (Apple).

There's actually an even simpler solution that doesn't include buying a new version of Logic. He can use his original version easily. Of course, that depends if the OP knows how to effectively use his computer though...

I bought PageMaker 6.5 in when I was teaching, and I have been retired over ten years. I upgraded to InDesign 3 in 2007. Two weeks ago my hard drive crashed. In installing InDesign 3 again, I'm asked for old PM6.5 serial number, which I can't find. I've used PageMaker since it was put out by Aldus in the 80s, and I have the first serial number from that set of floppies, from which I upgraded to all others, but I'm told no serial # from PM 6.5, I have to buy it all again!!!!! Is there any reason in this?

It looks like you have got an upgrade version of the new product. this means that you must have an old product that you used to obtain a discount on Adobe product. Therefore, the Installation process needs to verify this and the only way to do this is to have your old serial number. I wish I had your valid e-mail address to advise you further.

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. There are no upgrade paths from CS2.
If you purchased used software you're pretty much on your own. Much of what is sold on places like eBay or Craigs List doesn't have valid licenses. Caveat emptor.

Hello, I recently had a failure of hard disk and had to install a new one. Unfortunately, getting a recovery DVD from HP took time so i started using a trail version of Windows 8. Finally my Recovery DVD arrived from HP and now i am trying to avoid installing the orginal OS from scratch. Anyway to extract just the windows serial number from the DVD? or may be install OS on top of the existing installation (i know this sounds crazy). Please help. Cinema display serial number from plist

Hi, I need help getting my cinema display serial number from an old Plist file. My office was broken into recently and someone made off with the monitor. It's a long shot but I thought I could find the serial number for the campus police. I was able to find an old com.apple.windowserver.plist file that had some information for the display. I tried the command <defaults read ./com.apple.windowserver.plist> and came up with the following. Problem is they don't look like serial numbers for a cinema display. Any suggestions?

Go to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist. Open this with TextWrangler or a similar utility. Look for a DisplaySerialNumber key with an integer value that isn't 0. With any luck, this should be the s/n of your display.
If you haven't used this display for a while, the records of it may be gone.
Also, it appears that this isn't guaranteed. Double-check if possible.

I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now. But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

I had previously activated some NI products on a PC using my serial number. Now, I'm transferring ownership of the PC to someone else, so I've deactivated the products. However, the serial number is still recorded somewhere in the PC: In the NI License Manager, when I select Activate -> Use a Web browser... it auto-fills the fields with my serial number.
How do I wipe this serial number from the PC?

@uday: Yes, there are no more traces of the license files. I have NI License Manager 3.7. (But even though the license files are gone, my serial number remains)
@RavensFan: Because this is a brand new PC which forms part of a product I developed for a customer. I activated the Development versions of LabVIEW and TestStand for debugging purposes, just like this guy 5 years ago. Now I want to ship the system to the customer with LabVIEW RTE and the TestStand Base Deployment License in place, without undoing and redoing the work I've done on it.

If you have Lightroom 3 still installed, you can get it from there.
If you don't and you have your box/disk, it should be on there.
IF you don't have either of those,and you registered your software, you can log into your Adobe account and retrieve it there.
