Hard drive suddenly slow

Hello,
My internal hard drive got super slow today, I don't think I have done something what could cause this.
I've tested with hdparm -tT /dev/sdb, and the result was at about 100kb/s for cache and disk read, however, for my second hard drive it was around 12.000mb/s for cache, and 100mb/s for disk.
The disk in question is a Western Digital WD10EZRX.
If you need any extra information, just ask

That's one of the intellipower green power drives that ramps speed up and down for power conservation and frequently parks: that's why you have a "Load_Cycle_Count" value of 159544 in your smartcl output. Perhaps it has an internal fault that smartctl cannot detect?
Western Digital has a freely available drive checking tool for DOS or (!) Windows - the software for the WD Green / GP drive is at...
http://support.wdc.com/product/download … =2&lang=en
http://support.wdc.com/product/download … =3&lang=en
If you have access to a Windows computer, you could take the drive to it and connect it via a free SATA port and then install and run the WD test from the Windows hard disk to see what it comes up with. The short test takes ~ 2minutes.
There are instructions on the above WD DOS version page about creating a bootable usb device under Windows using rufus and putting the DOS version onto it - if you cannot access a Windows machine, you could make a usb bootable device with something like UNetbootin with freedos and put the DOS version on to do the same thing.
Good luck!
Cheers
Paul.

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.
    regards  - Alan

  • My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Macbook Pro and disappeared from Disk Utility. It works on a PC.

My Western Digital external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my macbook pro and it disappeared from disk utility. I have tried making invisible files visible but nothing has worked and my hard drive shows up on a PC but not my Mac anymore.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?

  • External hard drives suddenly changed to read only

Three of my external hard drives suddenly changed to read only. These hard drives have been working on my macbook pro for months. When I click on get info 'read only' shows up and there is no lock icon nor is there a window that shows name | permissions, also in disk utility the 'verify disk premissions', 'verify disk', 'repair disk', and 'repair disk premissions' buttons are ghosted and I can not select them. I have not made any changes to my computer and I have read many other posts and have not been able to find a solution.

About a hundred times with no luck. Some of my research is leading to Western Digital, there may be a problem with the drives' 'smartware' software. I've been using this drive for months and I never used the 'smartware', but I tried it anyway with no luck. I just remembered that four days ago I had this drive plugged this drive into an Iomega wireless storage device and it seemed to work fine. Now the wireless storage device can't find the drive at all. I just need to know if there is a way I can change the permissions back to read/write, otherwise I will have to buy another drive and transfer all the data to the new drive and re-formatt the wd drive.

Back up your system, make a Genius Bar appointment and take it in. If it's 4 months old you are still on warranty, let them fix it.

  • My hard drive is slower than ever - Late 2009 iMac - help requested

I was testing my hard disk via BlackMagic Disk Speed Test across the network (for copying files from my MacBook Pro to my Late 2009 iMac, and I was shocked at the write speeds.
Because of this, I went to the machine and ran local tests, both BlackMagic and xbench. Suddenly I was horrified when I saw the performance for write operations well below the speeds I'd observed in the past. Luckily, I had saved xbench files so I had the ability to compare old disk tests. In the summer of 2013 running 10.7.3, this same hard drive had an uncached write speed of 116 MB/s [4K blocks] and 94 MB/s [256K block]. Now, the drive running under 10.9.5 is performing very inconsistently, with top speeds around 80 MB/s and averages more like 50 MB/s.
I cannot think of any significant changes to tools or background applications installed since that time, so I ran EtreCheck -- the results of which I'm pasting below.
Any guidance as to what I should test would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! --
    Chris
    Problem description:
Hard disk slowed to less than half the speed from Mac OS X 10.7.3, as I am now on 10.9.5 and the speed appears to be roughly 40M/s uncached write down from 119M/s previously. I am using the same drive, memory and most of the same applications.
The only large difference is the OS.

    Hi Eric -
I did a horrible job of explaining *when* the slow performance became noticeable. These changes did not happen when I installed Mavericks, I just don't have benchmarks *saved* to give the support community exact numbers after Mavericks was installed. The performance at that time was roughly the same, although you might recall that the old app xbench no longer worked to give a comparison because one or more of the sections of testing wouldn't work (memory, if I recall correctly, although I will run it when I am back at that machine and post here).
In any case, the only significant change since the slow down is the OS, but the decline in performance was noticed in the fall. It wasn't until I tried this network copying task the other day that I decided to run BlackMagic's test. This is when I realized I should go check the performance on the local machine. Having already run through many of the generic recommendations, I thought perhaps someone here who has a much deeper understanding of the storage abstraction layer would have guidance on specific preference files that might be corrupted since I can't find any tool to check them. I've noticed that many of the people seeking guidance are not very technical and the advice is similarly geared. I'm sure I could spend a little time this week finding comparable tools in Mac OS X to those I'd have used in the past on Windows (Sysinternals) to do real time debugging and process analysis.
So far I have found that there were a few processes running high, like the dashboard client, so I moved (deleted) the preference file and rebooted. This resulted in the gain to that 60 MB/sec write performance (up from the low of 40 MB/sec), but there must be other areas yet unexplored.
At this point I'm considering a fresh install, but I'd been told in previous exchanges when I first started developing on Macs (2008) that fresh installs were rarely the best solution on Macs.
Can you give me guidance on that? You probably know that in the Windows world it is often (depending on how you define often) necessary to format and reinstall the OS. As a long time systems architect developing everything from device drivers to enterprise solutions, I see that as a result of the attempts to maintain legacy support for so long and the convoluted resulting APIs and failure to make real fixes for fear of causing problems with older hardware and software. Would you suggest erasing and reinstalling?
@BobHarris - I know that's a problem and it's why I monitor the drive more than I do drives in other systems. My drive didn't qualify for replacement, but I think Apple doesn't always do a good job with the recalls. I was very fortunate that my old white MacBook qualified for quite a few replacement parts so it's a great browsing-the-web computer now, but at its age, it isn't capable of running most of the apps I need. I have considered selling the 27" iMac but when I last had it in for warranty repair, the DisplayPort was misaligned to the case, so I'm going to have to pay labor just to get it popped open to fix that (since the service center says they didn't cause the DP problem - although they must have!)... In any case, if I have to spend that money, I might as well use the drive doubler kit since I never use the optical drive in that box anyway. Mostly I love having it because of the gorgeous big screen. That being said, costs of repairs are silly when I can just buy another used MBP circa 2012 and get twice the processing power then use a CalDigit dock like the one I use with my existing MBP to use an inexpensive HD TV for the monitor.
Thanks for the replies folks - the input is awesome!

  • PC External Hard Drive is Slowing my System Down

Just switched to Mac this weekend and I put all my PC files and music on my External backup drive and plugged that into my new iMac via USB 2.0). No problem seeing the files and dragging them into the iMac but the external drive is slowing my whole system down! Every time I do an action it starts humming away. Check mail? I searches the external. Turn on MS Word, checks external. Never got that pinwheel thing until this morning. I ejected the hard drive and all is right with the world. But I need that drive for occasional back up and what not. Any help would be appreciated.

I discovered it was a problem when I noticed that doing a simple spotlight search was causing my external drive to start humming. So I just checked into the preferences. However, it still starts running when I open iMovie and some other programs, but I'm sure there's a setting to shut that off too. However, if I want to make a backup of a file, I now have to literally drag it to the desktop and THEN move it into the external. I'm sure there's a better fix.

  • External Hard Drives Suddenly being removed:

I have two different external hard drives that I use for storing video (1 Seagate and 1 Western Digital). Over the last few days I have had them powered up one at a time. After about 10 minutes, I receive an alert that says that a “device wasn’t properly removed. Material stored on the device could be lost or damaged.”
The Icon for the Ext. HD has disappeared. A few minutes later it re-appears only to have the same thing happen again in the next 10 or 15 minutes.
The Ext HDs are connected via the firewire ports on the back of the computer.
Per a one to one suggestion, I unchecked the "Put hard Disk(s) to Sleep when possible. It didn't help.
Anyone have a similar problem and know the Fix? It's two different brands of ext. HD, so I think it's my computer and not the ext. HDs.
    These are my specs:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.1f5

same thing happened to me on my iMac the other day
the WD xdrive (plug 800fw) suddenly stopped working and did not show in finder (worked perfectly for 2 months)
ran a diagnostics program downloaded from WD's site to a PC and everything worked fine
i have another xternal plugged into usb so my guess - PROBLEM W/FIREWIRE!!

  • Hard drive noise -- slow computer

Hi folks. If anyone can give some advice that would be great.
My hard drive seems to be acting up. Every so often (probably 4 five-minute periods in 3 hours of use per day) I'll hear loud noises coming from the hard drive (a series of "grrrrs," "beeps," and "clicks") and when that happens, the computer will freeze, pinwheel/beachball will appear and I won't be able to do anything on the computer for a couple minutes.
I took my issue to the genius bar, they ran some tests, said it wasn't a hardware problem (therefore hard drive is ok physically) and did something to fix some problems in the hard drive. For a few days after, everything seemed to be working fine but now the problem has returned.
The only programs I have run since then are Safari, Firefox (which is always slow), MSN Messenger, iChat and MS Word.
When I go to the Disk Utility, the "Repair Disk" button is not clickable.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

First, in order to run repair disk, you need to boot from your OS X disc, since you can't repair a drive you've booted from. Insert the first OS X disk that came with your system, and holding the C key down, reboot (boots from the OS X disc). Choose disk utility from the menu bar, and you can run repair disk.
When you bring up disk utility, does the S.M.A.R.T. status say verified? I use a utility called smartreporter which provides a SMART status on the menu bar. This may give you warning before a hard drive failure. It's at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartreporter.html
You can use a utility like OnyX to clean things up on your hard drive. It's available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/download.html . Use the cleaning and maintenance tabs.
Difficult to say if you're hard drive is in fact on it's last legs, or if there is a fundamental issue with the data or indices on the hard drive. A utility like TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior can do things that Apple's Disk Utility can't do, in terms of analyzing and fixing issues on the hard drive. That might be worthwhile also.

  • Lacie D2 External Hard Drive suddenly won't appear on desktop or profiler??

I started my Mac today- and my external firewire 500 gig LacieD2 did not appear on my desktop. I went to Disk Utilities, and it is not showing up. In the profiler- it is listed as Unknown Device? The blue light is continually flashing. I unplugged it- turned off my computer, waited, and reconnected it. Still nothing. Is this hard drive dead? I have essential information on it that I cannot loose.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.
    Ummmm....

  • External Hard drive suddenly will only read! How can I make it read/write again?

    Hi folks,
I'm working with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 320gb External Hard Drive on the imacs here at my university. I have it formatted to ExFAT so that I could use it with my pc as well but I've never had to so far so it's only ever been used on the uni imacs.
It's been fine for working on media projects until suddenly when i came back to uni after the Christmas break I went to continue working on a film project and realised the external hard drive now said read only??
One thing I did was to put all of my work from last semester (which is everything that was on the hard drive into a single folder) could that have caused the problem?
And does anyone know how i can reset my permissions to read/write without causing damage or risk to the files on the hard-drive as I can't clear the disk (i have no where else to store the 185gb of video footage).
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me how i can fix it? I know how to do all of this on my pc but i've no idea with the mac as i only use it for my media projects here in the university.
    Thanks!
    DrF ;-)

Out of curiosity , will this method also work for an external drive formatted to NTFS.. I have a lot of data that I have nowhere to Float while re-formatting the drive , so If this method would allow me to keep the data and still fix the problem that would be great !!  At the moment the drive is formatted to NTFS and permissions say Read/Write , but I can only Read.. Very Frustrating as my mac drive is running low on space and performance is being affected.. Any help appreicated !!

  • External hard drive suddenly become read only

For those who have been using an external hard drive on OS X (using NTFS file system) without any problem and suddenly one day the system has started mounting it as a read only file system, this is because the file system right now has some inconsistences.
As it happened last night to me i started googling for a quick solution to solve the problem. But i didnt find anything out there. At least at first glance. So then i checked the system logs of the system in order to get some sort of specific information about why that was happening (in OS you have an application that makes so easy to have a look through the system logs and its in /applications/utilities/console.app). In my case, and i repeat, IN MY CASE, the problem was the following:
21/07/11 18:59:02          kernel          NTFS-fs warning (device /dev/disk1s1, pid 2140): ntfs_system_inodes_get(): $MFTMirr does not match $MFT.  Will not be able to remount read-write.  Run ntfsfix and/or chkdsk.
So afterwards once known the problem, was as easy as to mount the external HD in windows and execute the command chkdsk /f (google about the usage of the tool if dont know how it works).
Alternatively, you have the Linux option using the ntfsfix command, but you will need to install the program before that (if dont have it previously in your system) or otherwise you won't be able to use it (sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs)
    Hope it helps.
    Marc

I got an error message that my External Hard Drive was now 'read only'. Having scoured the various forums looking for clues as to why it had happened I found numerous suggestions, all of which seemed overly complicated and beyond my basic understanding (I'm old enough to remember when Macs 'just worked').
Anyway, among the suggestions on how to correct this I found what seemed like an overly simplified one - 'Don't switch on your external hard drive until after you've booted up'. Since I tend to leave mine on all the time, I immediately turned it off and back on again and ran Time Machine in hope rather than expectation. Would you believe it? It backed up as normal first time. Hope it works for anyone else having the same problem.

  • External hard drive suddenly became "unreadable" and the disk utility offers not repair options.  The drive is visible in disk utility but may not be mounted... any suggestions?

I have a WD My Passport 070A Media 2.0 TB external hard drive that has suddenly become unreadable on my laptop (MacBook Pro circa 2006 with 10.4.11) and I have tried on a MacBook Pro 2011 running 10.6.8 with the same results.  I had tried opening disk utility to repair the drive, but on both machines the drive is visible in the left column, with no indentation below the drive.  When I select the drive in the first aid portion the only options highlighted are info and eject...  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to repair the drive.  I am currently in Belize and am not home for 3 weeks yet.  I'm hoping for a fix while I am down here, otherwise I may have to wait...  I appreciate any assistance!

    Hi Christina,
It's quite possible the AC PSU has given out, if It's only Bus powered as it appears, that's the worst idea ever & asking for eventual problems.
    What Format is it?
Did you install any WD SW?
    Your best bet is DiskWarrio...
