Hardware or trackpad software glitch?

I've been going crazy after upgrading my Macbook to one of the new aluminum ones where it seems to "ignore" my clicks. I've found several other posts in this forum about it - and am trying to figure out if this is that same issue, or a hardware problem where I should exchange my machine.
It seems it misses around every 5-6 clicks, but the cursor always works and will move around fine. I've tried clicking with my fingertips - but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I also tried changing the tracking speed as recommended in another thread - but it also didn't make any difference.
Any tests anyone knows to determine if this is the common problem or something else? Would you "hang tight" with my otherwise perfect laptop - or try trading it?
Thanks for opinions,
Scott

Boot from your system install DVD and play with it there. If it's OK, then the problem is most likely software.

  • HARDWARE interfacing and software routines

    Hello there,
I am interested in finding out a really basic tutorial/note which will allow me to work with the basic communication protocols like SPI , RS 232, etherner, USB, etc. I am looking for tutorial with BOTH HARDWARE interfacing  and software routines.
Multiple websites will be ok for me.
I have searched wikipedia and lot of power point presentations but was not successful in landing up with a COMPLETE tutorial which explains the hardware interfacing connections and software.
If you guys can suggest an evaluation kit where i can pracice the above interfacing and software routine..... by all means do let me know.
    Looking forward to your reply.

Technically you can do everything you are talking about for free provided you have the internet tool kit installed (Full Development Suite) and depending on what level of detail you plan on going into.
If you want to play with RS232 you can start with just taking the existing Labview example, "Basic Serial Write and Read.vi" under Labview Help -> Find Examples.  You can find a serial cable and connect it to your Comm port.  On the other end of the Comm port you can insert a small wire to short pin 2 to pin 3 (TX to RX).  You will then be able to send and recieve data on the same vi.  I would look at wikipedia to learn more:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-232
If you have the internet tool kit install then you can do all kinds of stuff with just a regular internet connection.  For example any place where you can Telnet you could test using the "Telnet Line Client.vi" provided by Labview.  Again I would start by consulting wikipedia if you have questions:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telnet
If you are trying to do everything down to the hardware level then this is a little more involved.  Again break your post into smaller pieces and repost on the Labview forum and you will have better luck getting detailed responses.
You should not have to spend much money to play around.  You can build a lot of this stuff yourself or you can purchase very cheep if you shop around.  For example you can implement SPI using a parallel port but you need to know what your target SPI interface will be.  Regards, SS

  • Differences between  hardware thread and software thread?

    Hi ,all!
The Instructions of SPARC V9 have nothing about
thread ID. And there are two bits of CCX packets
    indicating thread ID.
Does it mean that CCX generates the thread ID
of SPARC core? Each SPARC core has one unique ID to identify itself when it receives packets, such as CCX packets, interupt packets and so on. Such ID is defined in the Hyperprivileged register. Maybe you can see UA2005-current-draft-HP-EXT.pdf for more information.
And, what are the differences between hardware
    thread and software thread?
Thanks in advance!Software thread runs on the hardware thread (or strand).

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
    Nathan

  • Trackpad software missing

strange problem! i just installed a new hard drive in my iBook G4, but having lost my previous system restore disks, I had to install Tiger using a disk from a friend. it seems as though this Tiger was designed just for desktops because it gives me no trackpad software in the system. i have to continuously use a mouse. is there any way to download the trackpad driver for the computer, or will i have to reinstall Tiger from an iBook system restore disk?

    Hi Samantha,
I'm surprised that the Tiger disk that you borrowed from a friend, if it is the full retail version, hasn't installed the trackpad driver. I have erase/installed Tiger to my iBook using a retail disk and have no issues with the trackpad. If, on the other hand, you used a machine specific disk…
I think in the long term you need to replace the iBook specific disks. Apple, apparently, will provide these for a fee far less than the retail price of Tiger.
In the meantime you might like to download and install the shareware SideTrack or, if compatible with your iBook, the freeware iScroll, either of which may provide a stopgap. I'm not sure, though, whether they build on the existing driver SW or completely replace it. If the latter then you are out of trouble.
    Best of luck,
    Adrian

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

  • Display brightness software glitch on the Samsung Intensity

I discovered a somewhat annoying software glitch on my Samsung Intensity.  When you increase the backlight brightness and set it, then decrease it, the backlight duration changes to 7 seconds by itself.  It does not change the duration setting when you increase the brightness and set it.  Please fix this glitch in the software update.

I can certainly understand how this glitch can be frustrating for you.  I did some research in the resources that I have and this is not a reported issue.  Can you please tell me what software version you are running?
You can find that by following these steps:
From the main screen, press Menu.
Scroll to Settings & Tools, press OK
Scroll to Phone Info, press OK.
Scroll to SW/HW Version, press OK.
Please repost so I can trouble shoot further.  Thank you.

  • Constant Software Glitches

Okay, so i'm stuck in a little bit of a dilemma. I bought the iPhone 4S 16GB AT&T back on October 29th instead of the iPhone 5 (It wasn't available at ALL and AT&T had a 4 week waiting list and I was a bit impatient since I needed a new one for work ASAP).
About a month ago (January), very, very, strange glitches started happening with my iPhone, both with the software and the hardware! My phone has constantly told me that it's overheated when it clearly hadn't been since I wouldn't have used it or it would've been lying on my desktop for several minutes. I have also had several apps CONSTANTLY crash, even the default Apple apps installed on the phone. Just recently, it bricked on it's own and I've never fiddled around with it. I had to completely restore it in DFU mode and everything! And now it's constantly freezing and my sleep and home buttons have been becoming less reponsive.
So far, I have had to restore my iPhone 4S 12 TIMES since the beginning of January!!! It is now running iOS 6.1 and i'm STILL experiencing the same issues I had with iOS 6.0 and 6.0.1!
All my restores have been clean installs, set up as new iPhone, and installed everything from scratch. But, my main concern is my contract termination fee since I might have to return it to get it fixed or replaced?
What should I do since my contract is NOWHERE near to being up? I don't want to pay several hundred dollars to terminate the contract and still pay for a new phone!
Should I take the phone to Apple or AT&T and explain the situation and mention I would've purchased the 5 if there wasn't a waiting list? Or should I just deal with the hassle?
    What would happen?
Would I receive a replacement iPhone 4S or could I haggle down the price of an iPhone 5, or even convince them to give me one for free? Is it possible for them to waive or dismiss a termination fee because the phone is extremely unstable and practically unusable on a regular basis?
I've never had a problem with any Apple products, coming from a proud owner of 2 iPads (1st gen and 3rd gen), a MacBook (2011), iMac (2012), and numerous iPods over the years. I've never had to deal with anything like this from Apple or any other phone for that matter!
Yet what's been happening is really starting to get on my nerves! I'm starting to lose hope in this! If I can't get this fixed, i'm seriously considering switching to a Galaxy S III, because i've always trusted Apple and i've always had great customer support and service, but this is just ridiculous and utterly dissapointing! I will gladly pay the money to switch if I cannot get this situation resolved, because i'm just frustrated!
Can anybody help me please? Anything would be greatly appreciated! I really love Apple's products, but I really don't want to have to switch because I love the iPhone and Apple.

galleherjazz, a little research would tell you a lot.  Palm sold the rights to Palm Desktop years ago to a company called "Access" from Japan.  It was their responsibility to come up with a version of Palm Desktop that works with Vista.  They produced one version, then updated it to 6.2.2 to fix some bugs.  After that, they abandoned the project!  Palm Inc. moved on to a wholly new operating system (webOS).
"Palm programmers" had nothing to do with the decisions made.   Access' version came with no color categorization.  Pleas for improvements and bug fixes have fallen on deaf ears.
Palm Inc. appears to have no interest in supporting Windows 7 with their legacy (read: discontinued) devices.   Any hope for 64-bit USB compatibility appears to be gone.

  • Is it a hardware and/or software issue when the screen suddenly shifts?

    Hey there,
Yesterday my 2.5 year old laptop had an error.
I was working in excel, when suddenly the screen shifted out of focus.
I saw everything on the screen echoed some pixels to the upperleft, and moving the mouse over a shifted area turned this area back to normal, however this also shifted the area where the mouse no longer was.
I thought I should reboot my laptop, but then it wouldn't start. I have tried rebooting in safe mode and recovery modes and saw several blue screens flash by. I have inserted the 2 recovery discs that came with the laptop, but it cannot finish installation.
What concerns me is that even if I get a recovery disc to work, the screen might still be shifted. Do you think this might be a hardware error, a cable breaking somewhere? Or is it a software error somehow? Or perhaps it was a software error leading to a hardware malfunction?
I'd like to install an operating system again, but if the screen has a hardware issue it might be more worthwhile to buy a new laptop all together.
Please advise if you have any idea on what could cause this, thanks in advance!
    Kind regards! ^_^

    Hey there,
Just wanted to let you know what I learned. I visited some computer repair shops. The screen was acting so weird, I had no idea what it was called, but now I know the screen was garbled. It was a hardware error, namely the chip of the memory of the graphics card was burned, and apparently since it is directly connected to the motherboard it would be an expensive party to have that repaired.... I ended up buying a new notebook, this time with 3 year's insurance ^_^ What was also interesting is that when we installed older operating systems on it, with very low resolutions, everything worked out fine. As soon as the newest graphic card driver was installed or we switched to a normal resolution, it was garbled again. It was definitely the memory of the graphics card.
As a suggestion, I think it would be helpful if the term 'garbled screen' or 'garbled' is a searchable phrase on this website, because it took me forever to find out what the problem was called. There is some information about screen issues, but only if the screen is black or blue screen of death. If more people experience this garbling issue, it might save some headaches :p
    Thanks again for everything!

  • Difference in AE file Imported into PPro with MPE in Hardware vs. Software Mode

I am getting an undesireable result when importing AE files into a PPro Sequence with MPE in hardware mode. The top (or left) pic is accurate, with MPE in Software mode (nice soft glow). In the bottom pic, MPE is in Hardware mode. Note the undesireable (and inaccurate) harder glow. These AE files are output in an uncompressed AVI with alpha channel. The pics below were imported into PPro with the AE file placed over a black clip in PPro (Video Layer 1=Black. Video Layer 2= AE text w/Alpha). Any thoughts, or better yet, solutions?!

Jim, so you're suggesting that I create my graphics in PPro instead of AE? That's not going to work! I must be one of the few people out there that output AE files with an alpha channel and import them into PPro, for I can't imagine Adobe not addressing this if many people were using AE & PPro together in this fashion. I guess I'm stuck having to continue to use MPE in software mode only (alpha channels work perfectly in this mode, but I have to do a lot of rendering.). I used to blame Matrox for this problem. Sure glad I haven't upgraded to a Titan!
BTW, I get the same undesireable results in MPE Hardware Mode when using Dynamic Linked Comps to AE.
One last question: does the quality of the video card make any difference with this alpha channel problem I'm having with MPE? I'd buy a Titan card right now if that would solve my problem!

  • Display software glitch? random colored squares appearing on interface

    Hi -
I've never seen anything like this.  There are numerous small squares displaying on the OS (desktop, dock and icons).   There's very little rhyme or reason to the patterning.  They are there upon starting the computer and remain in place until shut down.  On restart, they take on a different arrangement, but they stay in the new arrangement until another shut down.  Super bizarre.
I CAN capture them with a screenshot:
Any ideas?  This is a MacBook Pro 8,2 running 10.6.8, software-updated.  I ran AHT but nothing the matter on the hardware side (corroborated by the fact that they appear in screenshots)...
I'm going to run a few more diagnostics and then probably upgrade to Yosemite - but it would be nice to know if this has been seen before.

By thousands, if not tens of thousands of users. I have the same model as you, and since I'm still under AppleCare, I had my logic board replaced by Apple: and that 'fix' solved my problem for a year now. But others haven't been as lucky - expired warranty and having to replace up to 3-4 logic boards. Others have also had a 'BGA reball' which has worked for some, not all, though.
Take a look across the thread started in February of 2013 and see if you've problems similar to the ones you've posted -> 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card.
If so, look at the few options. I know that mine will fail again one day and I'll then decide whether to reball or not.
    Good luck,

  • Isight on Macbook Pro no longer functions... Hardware failure or software?

I have seen others having this issue as well, and I have tried the fixes I have seen in other threads on the forum.
It was working with Photobooth just fine after I recieved it, and it seems over time at some point it quit working. I remember seeing the green LED stay lit for some time after using and closing photobooth at one time, but I just ignored it, and after rebooting it wasn't working.
I was able to shut down and get it working, and now it doesn't work at all.
I have reset the PMU several times, and that gives me a different response from the operating system every time I do it...
If i start Photobooth or Ichat, it will just act as if there is a camera there, but no picture... If I reset the PMU, reboot, and run those apps, it says the camera is in use, with nothing loaded except the OS. If I reset the PMU again and reboot, I get no error again, with no video. I just keeps cycling like that.
Could bootcamp have killed my Isight in some way? I haven't loaded anything but generic XP Sp2, and I haven't clicked on the camera device that causes bluescreens apparently...

Since you've already reset your PMU (and presumably your NVRAM as well) during the reset process I don't think there is any more "user serviceable" steps you can take. I'm unclear why you are not able to downgrade your firmware, but since I have not done this myself (and don't currently have my MBP to test it with) I can't walk you through the process. I did find one other user replying that this firmware restore CD will only work if the previous firmware upgrade was interrupted.
"Note: This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer's firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed."
I guess this means there is no simple way to do it.
Do you have anything else plugged into your USB bus? If you try to plug other devices in, do you see them show up OK in your hardware profiles? Does your iSight show up there as well?
Does anyone know if the little privacy screen which floats ontop of the camera has any software hooks, or if its just a simple cover?
I actually use an external iSight with my MBP for doing recordings of my educational morning classes because I like the way it sits flat on the table and can be moved around without adjusting the laptop-- I'm assuming you don't have one to test with.
Its probably time to work with Apple Support -- there may not be anything else you can do on your own at this point. Worst case scenario, you'll be without a machine for a week or so.

  • 2010 MacBook Pro: Freeze w/ NVDA kernal error. Hardware fail or software problem?

Hundreds of complaints about the hardware design flaw which Apple never addressed in their 2009 model year computers, wherein the GeForce graphics card overheats and causes constant crashing, is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/27865920?tstart=0#27865920
How about the same sort of problem in a 2010 MPB running OSX 10.6.8.  Screen locks up, case is very very hot, need to use the Power Key to shut down.  Since they never solved the 2009 problem, they probably used the same flawed design in the 2010 computers.
I have to keep this computer going as long as possible. I've used Macs exclusively since my Mac Plus, but 21st Century Apple is a stinking crappy company, which has ****** with me too much.  I won't be buying anymore Apple products.
There seem to be no driver updates for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and OSX 10.6.8.
Lately I get one or two freezes a day, always when browsing in FireFox (latest rev, which is 36.0.4). Need to shut down with power key. The hardware test on the Applications disk says my machine is OK. Is my hardware failing, or is this some software issue with FireFox? Or is OSX 10.6.8 simply too old to keep up with Flash and other web page crap?  Can I slather a bunch of conductive grease inside my case to get more heat flow to the case itself?

  • Forum software glitch using id numbers

Last night I posted a reply to someone's question and I noticed that the forum was going
through a phase where it was ignoring people's nicknames and just using id numbers. So the forum software posted the
answer under my id number not my nickname. Then today I see it went back to nicknames.
When it converts to nicknames, the messages sent under the id number become invisible.
The poster would have to go in via the control panel to see the original posting as one way
to find such a message. I just thought I'd mention it that some messages were possibly effectively lost.
