Hardware VPN

Hello,
I have a few pieces of hardware which I plan to locate at a remote site. Are there any Cisco products which would enable me to have all of those devices on our network through a VPN. I do not want a dedicated line, but I would like the site to be on our corporate network.
Thanks

It can act as both. The best is to use a router also as "conecntrator", this way you can do the so called DMVPN and connect all your remote networks seamlessly. That can be as small as a 1801.
hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

  • Snow Leopard upgrade broke bridged networking through hardware VPN in a VM

I have been using an Ubuntu VM through Parallels to connect into work through a Cisco hardware VPN box. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard this past Sunday I noticed that bridged networking no longer worked. I reproduced this problem using VirtualBox so this isn't a Parallels problem. I can connect fine with bridged networking and no hardware VPN box. I can also connect fine through the hardware VPN if I use shared networking. Sadly I need bridged networking for various tools I use. Is this a known issue?
    thanks much

After power cycling the VPN box and rebooting Snow Leopard a couple of times things seemed to have sorted themselves out. Chaulk it up to a stray alpha particle...

  • Configuring Hardware VPN with Verizon modem/router

    Hi-
I'm a Northern VA FIOS subscriber. Verizon provided the following:
    Modem: Zyxel Prestige 861
    Wireless Router: Actiontec MI424WR
This setup has been working fine.
My job recently gave me a hardware VPN: Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall, Model FVS338
I'm having a bit of difficulty setting it up the way I'd like.
    1) In general, should I connect the HW VPN directly into a free port of the Modem (parallel with the router), or should I connect it into the Router? (Does Verizon support multiple devices connected to the Modem, or do they expect us to connect everything via the router?)
    2) I tried a number of different configurations, and the only way I was able to get the hardware VPN to function was to disconnect the router, connect the VPN box in its place, and configure the VPN box to mimic/use the MAC address of the router. This provided connectivity to the work network, but is not acceptable because I need the wireless home network provided by the router as well.
Does anyone have any recommendations for how to set this up properly?
    Many thanks.
    -Steven
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From actiontec.com
Can I use the Actiontec Gateway or Router to connect to my employers VPN so that I can work from home?
Yes, the Actiontec Routers and Gateways support connecting to VPN servers. By default, Actiontec Routers and Gateways allow Client VPN traffic to pass-through. (the Actiontec will allow a connected PC to "pass-through" and connect to a remote VPN server).
NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, Actiontec Routers and Gateways do not function as VPN endpoints. They cannot make a VPN connection directly to a VPN server, router or client. The reverse is also true, VPN routers, servers and clients cannot make a VPN connection directly to the Actiontec Router itself. (Some of the proprietary VPN applications require specific ports be opened in the Actiontec, for a successful connection. Not all VPNs use the same ports, so determine the ports used by your VPN software before attempting to forward the ports.)
did you set up the pptp port forwarding rules ?  you should have l2tp (1701) protocol and pptp (1723) port forwarding protocol for port forwarding.
the preconfigured vpn rules should be fine.

  • RV016 v1 Hardware VPN Throughput?

I'd like to know what type of VPN throughput I should be seeing for the rv016 connected via a site-to-site vpn.  One of my connections has a t1 while the other has 4mbps upload bandwidth.  I know that would translate to roughly 100k/sec and 400k/sec, but I don't think I'm seeing anything near that.
    Any opinions and experiences appreciated.

  • Trying to connect to a L2TP over IPSec VPN

There are quite a few threads on here about VPN's and Lion, and clearly quite a number of questions. However, I haven't found one that quite addresses the problem I've got and I've now exhausted all my ideas and am looking for help...
I have a hardware VPN server that I know is working correctly. I normally have it setup so that all connections have to be L2TP over IPSec, but currently also have PPTP connections enabled.
At the moment I can do the following:
Connect to it from a machine running Windows 7 using all methods
Connect to it from a machine running Snow Leopard using the in built PPTP and L2TP over IPSec network configurations
Connect to it from a machine running Lion using the in built PPTP network configuration
Connect to it from a machine running Lion using Equinux's VPN Tracker 6
What I can't do is connect to it from a machine running Lion using L2TP over IPSec using the network configuration
I have tried a clean install of Lion and entering the connections. I have tried using an install of Snow Leopard that works and then upgrading it. I just cannot get it to work.
Looking at the logs on both the VPN server and my machine I can see that the IPSec connection is established but then my client says that it cannot connect to the server whilst my server is saying that CHAP login has failed.
I have been through all of the potential solutions I can find on here or the wider internet, no matter how unlikely they seem to be to my problem. I've ensured that there are no potential firewall issues. I've also tried every setting I can think of on both my client and the server. I've tried changing secrets and passwords, including reducing their length, ensuring nothing like Back to My Mac can interfere, and even starting up in 32 bit mode.
I've now exhausted my ideas. Does anybody have any ideas, a potential solution or managed to get this to work?
My connection is set up to use a shared secret and a password.

I am trying to set up connection to PureVPN for security purposes and have followed their config settings for my Macbook.
So how do I check the ports on my machine, as I'm sure it's not a problem at their end. I only have one machine so don't understand how it is possible to see if ports are being blocked at my end.
Do I run that /var/log/ppp.log in Terminal?

  • DNS not working with VPN

I've done my best to search for an existing discussion on this topic, but couldn't find anything conclusive or exactly the same.
I'm brand new to Apple and OS X Server, but think I have made good progress with this one exception.
Setup: XServe with OS X Server SL setup as a Gateway directly behind an ISP/Cable modem. WAN configured and connected to the ISP, and one LAN with the default setup at 192.168.1.x (DNS at 192.168.1.1). I used the Gateway Assistant to get basic network settings initially configured, including DHCP, Firewall, DNS, and VPN.
I'm using DNS with a single primary zone for internal domain purposes and forwarders for Internet resolution. I have customized it to include various machine records within my LAN. Outside of the LAN, DNS is handled at register.com to point all traffic to my servers WAN IP.
In short, when connected directly to the LAN, all works like a charm. Internal DNS handles everything perfectly, and connects to the Internet for everything else.
However, when I connect to my environment from the Internet via VPN (LT2P and PPTP) and a Mac OS X SL client machine DNS doesn't seem to function and I can't even ping my DNS server by IP (192.168.1.1). Any attempt to ping any resource by name including my primary zone's FQDN fail/timeout. I can only ping other LAN resources by IP.
Not sure if this is useful or a valid test, but when I establish a VPN connection while on the LAN, everything works great and as expected, and I seem to get the exact same network settings assigned by the server as when coming from the Internet.
Just not sure where to go from here? I seem to be on the LAN via the VPN, just can't really use it effectively if I can't leverage internal DNS.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Have you manually entered your server DNS in the VPN DNS settings tab of your client machine? This may not be applicable to you as we use a hardware VPN router as we never could get the Mac VPN working. However, if i connect to our VPN without the DNS entered in my PPTP config I experience a similar issue as you. I can access our shared AFP, ping IPs, but not resolve domains. To fix this I put both our primary and secondary internal DNS plus search domain in the System Preferences/Network/VPN(PPTP)/Advanced/DNS tab of my PPTP connection.
Also i noted that if you have multiple configurations under one VPN interface - all configurations will be set to that DNS. To get around this i had to add multiple VPN interfaces for my various VPNs instead of using multiple configurations under one interface.
Not sure if this will help but its what worked for me. I am new Server as well and been trial and error setting up a couple Mini Servs. It look me a while to break enough things to figure it all out but I now have a slick little setup.

  • Sun Ray @ home  - VPN bad performance

    Hi All
we've setup a test configuration with a Sun Ray Server (dedicated network) a CISCO PIX 501 and one DTU SR2.
The screen refresh performance on the DTU is very bad. Other DTUs, connected directly to the SRSS are fine.
We've played around with the bandwith limit on the SR2 (GUI firmware):
    no limit: DTU unusable
    3000: DTU slow
    1500: DTU more slower
    700: unusable
The throughput of the PIX 501 should be around 3MPS. The PIX does nothing else than serving one DTU. All components (SR Server, PIX, DTU) are in the same room and connected directly to each other
Is the small PIX the reason for the bad performance ?
Should it work smoothly with only one DTU?
Which Hardware (vpn box) is recommended to serve at least 10 SR2 DTUs ?
    Thanks a lot.

You problem could be fragmentation. Have you lowered the default MTU (1500). MTU of 1356 works with my ASA 5505. Here is a nice article on the subject, http://blogs.sun.com/ThinkThin/entry/the_importance_of_mtu .

  • EZVPN Router to PIX - vpn tunnel fails after xauth

I'm trying to configure a 1721 router to connect to a PIX at the office, essentially putting the router in place of a software VPN client. I can connect to the PIX with both a software VPN client and a hardware VPN 3002, but whenever I try to configure the router with EZVPN, the tunnel fails to come up after the XAUTH negotiation. I've tried a few variations on configurations with no luck. Can anyone comment if this is possible? I've attached a config and debug info. Thanks in advance for any help and comments.
    Ken

Thank you for the suggestions. Currently, the PIX is configured to not allow the save password option on the remote end. Was hoping the PIX config wouldn't need any changes since its working for the software VPN clients. I tried your NAT suggestion:
ip nat inside source list 100 interface Ethernet0 overload
ip nat inside source list Lan_Addresses interface Ethernet0 overload
    ip access-list standard Lan_Addresses
    permit 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 100 deny ip 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255 10.0.0.0 0.0.15.255
    access-list 100 permit ip 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.255 any
This didn't change things. Also, things behave differently when I use a bad username/password, for example:
AADDAA#crypto ipsec client ezvpn xauth OfficeVPN
    Username: baduser
    Password:

  • What Home Router Supports VPN Endpoints for the iPod Touch?

    Hello,
I'm trying to figure out what VPN Endpoints I can use for remote access to my home network. I'd prefer a hardware VPN router like a Linksys BEFSX41, or a D-Link DIR-330. I'd prefer something like the DLink since it supports local area wireless as well.
I want to know if anyone has used any of this equipment, and how well it worked. There seems to be surprisingly little info on getting VPN to the home, let alone the iPod.
Can anyone recommend a router which will perform as a VPN end point for me?
    UHF.

You might be facing the problem, because the Ipod and your Desktop computer must be having the same IP address thats the reason whenever your IPod is connected to your Network, your Desktop must be getting disconnected. Check the IP address of your IPOD and of your Desktop Computer.
First thing which you need to check, if the Physical connections are done properly. Connect the Modem to the Internet Port of the Linksys Router and then Connect the computer to the LAN Port No.1. On your Desktop computer login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Status tab and check "Internet IP address"
If required you can Re-Set your Router and Re-configure all the settings on your Router from the scratch.

  • Leopard server VPN performance

What kind of a performance do you get with Leopard VPN server?

Over the Internet or locally (between subnets)?
When VPN maximum perfomance/throughput for a device is stated by a hardware VPN router/firewall manufacturer, it must be by measuring the throughput through the device "locally", for example from WAN to LAN, when no other traffic is passing through the device. How well it performs encrypting/decrypting (the hardest part) and then moving the packets between interfaces must mostly be a device CPU dependant figure.
But if you mean connecting through the Internet from a DSL connection I would expect no real difference between the Juniper and OS X server VPN. It would most likely not be the server that is the restricting factor.
But of course depending on what hardware a VPN router it is running on and if or not taxed heavily by running other services simultaneously, what other traffic is passing to and from Internet at/between both sides (if the "road" is congested), available bandwidth on the client and/or server Internet connection and other things (firewall under attack), performance varies over time.

  • Simple VPN solution mac to mac

I have a PM G5 at a fixed IP address and want to VPN into it from my 17" PB on dialup as I travel... Both are running 10.4 client.
So what is the simple way to get a VPN set up... (never done VPN before, but want secure dial-in)
    a) do I need to install 10.4 Server onto the Desktop to get the VPN software on it, ready for the laptop to log into... ???
    b) is there EASIER 3rd party software rather than going to 10.4 server for just VPN... ???
    c) is it EASIER to use hardware VPN... ???
Sure appreciate some guidance as I dont know where else to start...

There is AlmostVPN. You can also just turn on "Remote Login" in the Sharing PrefPane and tunnel in through ssh. You can get an idea about tunnels on the AlmostVPN site. There are other sources if you google "ssh tunnel mac os x".
ssh is an encrypted log in to your home computer. Tunnels allow you to send data over a particular port through the encrypted interface.
You can also try OSXvnc and Chicken of the VNC. This link talks about using tunnels with vnc.

  • Cisco SA520 VPN Connections

Do they require additional licensing, or are they included with the device? Does it make a difference whether Hardware VPN to another Device or Software VPN to remote user?

Thanks for the follow up Steven.   Can you go into more detail regarding this?  Is there a white paper or data sheet that a partner can look at to come up with the correct solution?

  • Poor Network Performance from VPN sites

We are experiencing poor network performance when connecting from hardware VPN sites. VPN sites have Cisco Hardware VPN client 3002 which terminates to Cisco 3005 VPN concentrator. Geting upload/download speeds of 355/484kbsp from VPN to surewest.com. If I remove the VPN and connect laptop directly to dsl modem, speeds are 3mb up and 1mb down. Any ideas what could be causing this?

    Try this
Adjust the MTU and MSS size in concentrator and client.

  • Using OS X and VPN ?

Has anyone successfully used a hardware VPN router i.e. Netgear FVS318, etc and the VPN client in OS X ? If so, how did you setup the client in OS X ?
    Dennis

I'm equally interested in trying to set up VPN on a Netgear FVS314 or FVS114 (4-LAN port version). I downloaded the manuals for each and the VPN setup seems the same (each can be set up for 8 VPN tunnels).
The "port-forwarding" information in the first posted reply is not helpful. The whole purpose of VPN is to avoid port forwarding and allow a secure connection that acts as if it were on the local network.
The Netgear manuals don't seem to refer to the setting that are available in Internet Config or System Preferences - Network?
