Has anyone taken their MacBook pro to China?

I need to know if a power converter is needed or if an adaptor will be enough.  I will not be staying in a hotel.

You will just need an adaptor, the MBP power supply is compatible with China's voltage & frequency

  • Has anyone taken their iPad 3 to Apple over Wi-Fi issues?

Has anyone taken their iPad (3rd Generation) Wi-Fi only model to an Apple store and tried to use AppleCare to solve their Wi-Fi issues?
    *Start: Problem/Rant*
I had an iPad 2 Wi-Fi only model and I never had an issue with it. When the iPad (3rd Generation) was released, I went ahead and bought it. However, from day one, I never had the wireless strength of my iPad 2.
I'm a college student, live in a dorm, and I am fairly tech savvy. This problem confused me for the longest, as no environmental factors had changed and my iPad 2 would still connect at full bars. I read on some forums that many new iPad 3 users had reported that their new iPad had poorer signal strength in general after running many different diagnostic test. Apparently the radio in the device isn't as good picking up reception as the iPad 2.
After conducting some dB tests of my own, I found this to be true indeed. But I could live with it, as my iPad (3rd Generation) still connected to Wi-Fi for my dorm (as I am close to an access point). However that wasn't the end of my problems. Anytime I watched Hulu, Youtube, or streamed a movie that was at least an hour long, my wireless signal would drop completely and would pause the video to give me a blue pop-up box stating that I had no Internet connection.
I noticed that my wireless icon had gone away, but after about 1 minute it reappeared. The video wouldn't resume, so I had to refresh the page and go back to where it got stuck previously. A minor inconvenience, but still a problem. The first time, I wrote it off as a legitimate Internet problem on my campus's part. However, the same problem occurred again, about an hour later. I quickly went to my computer and tested the connection and I still had Internet. After this point, I setup two wireless devices on the same network and waited for it to occur, and when it did, I was able to conclude that it was my iPad's fault.
In the interest of getting it to work and my own curiosity, I tried all the standard troubleshooting steps such as: Rebooting the iPad, restoring the iPad, connecting to various encryption types such as my campus WPA and WEP network types. I even got a wireless router with a direct Internet connection, turned off the encryption and tested this on different channels and even g/n networks. I still get one to two minute periodic wireless network drops.
I've had this iPad 3 since launch and aside from the Wi-Fi thing, it has been great, but it has finally gotten to me. The other day, I was running low on time and was uploading my professor's notes to Dropbox that I had recorded on my iPad when the signal gave out for it's regular wireless fail and it ruined a presentation. Yeah, first world problems, but when I paid so much for this and have invested so much of my own time to fix something that should of worked in the first place, it is kind of infuriating.
    /end rant
I am going to an Apple store tomorrow and using my AppleCare warranty while telling them my problem and hope that they can fix it. However I am worried that since it appears to be a hardware issue, that they won't be able to fix it. Also my iPad 3 has no screen protector and even though it is used, it is in perfect condition (I used a case for the exterior). I don't want a refurbished model which may have minor scratches (on a retina screen this would drive me insane). I am OCD about keeping my expensive stuff safe and scratch free. I know that I should of brought it in the moment I noticed the issue, but I was secretly hoping that it was just a bad firmware/software issue that would of been resolved with iOS 6.0 (obviously it wasn't) and my store doesn't accept returns on any Apple Products (Barnes & Noble) even if you open it in front of them, however they do offer AppleCare which is what I am hoping can fix it. I'm still within my year warranty, have the original receipt and box.
Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue or a wi-fi issue at all with the iPad (3rd Generation) and using AppleCare? I've read horror stories about employees doing terrible things and is it safe to not restore my iPad and just hand it over to them? I know this is just me being lazy, but is it alright for me not to delete/restore my iPad before handing it over to them? Like I don't have to worry about them posting on twitter or checking my email? After two semesters, it is kind of a hassle to put everything back on there, anyone have any bad experience just handing it over?
Lastly, is there anything I should do, before handing it over to them? Like taking pictures of what it looked like, before they handled it? Is there a way to register with Apple the MAC address of the iPad so they know that I am the owner? (well, I guess my email should be associated with that).
I know it is a long read, any questions answered would be appreciated (it doesn't have to be all), and if people want, I'll update on my experience with AppleCare regarding my issue and if it gets resolved.

I've seen a few posts from users that had wifi problems getting a replacement iPad.
A refurb iPad has a new screen, battery and back plus warranty.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Anyone have their MacBook Pro repaired at an Apple Store?

I'm reading about people who're getting one-day turnarounds in sending their MacBook Pros in for logic board replacement; in my case, the Geniuses at the Apple Store told me I'd get faster turnaround if I let them do it instead, in-house. It's been a week. No word yet.
Anyone else have major service done in-house at an Apple Store versus send their laptop in? What kind of turnaround did you have? Should I be concerned, at this point?

    Hi Jay,
It could be for the fact that they might have to order some parts which might be on back order. If i needed a repair i would take it into the store as well, the advantage being:
-At least when you pick it up you have the option to see there and then whether there is a damage done, whether the repair is done as requested and be able to refer back to the geniuses if need be.
Just give them a call if you are woried but i am sure that it will work out fine.

  • Has anyone seen this MacBook Pro 15" 2008 problem before?

Hi. My MacBook Pro has developed a fault whereby a horizontal line appears on the screen, the mac freezes then a host of vertical lines gradually appear on the screen until it is obscured. Something similar happened in May last year and Apple charged me over £300 to repair it, replacing the 'mother board'.
I have so far taken it into the Apple shop twice in the last week (a two hour round trip). Both times they have opened it, cleaned it and declared it fixed. This time it lasted about an hour before happening again, although this time at least I've been able to restart it.
Has anyone seen this before, or have any advice about how best to proceed?
I have put a video of the symptoms here:
    20120915 135612 - YouTube
Thanks for reading. This is my first post so apologies if I've rambled a bit!
    Steve
    MacBook Pro 15", late 2008.

I wasn't notified that you asked me a question or that there was a new post on this topic. I should have been, that bugs me.
    Anyhow... Mr. Ah
The problem that some people, mostly with a certain video card, were having was when they updated from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5. For many of them the problem went away when they went through the hassle of reverting back to 10.5.4.
Did you +just recently+ update to 10.5.5? If you have, then their fix is for you too, going back to 10.5.4. If you have had 10.5.5 installed for a while now, and this just started happening, chances are good that it is your video card, or perhaps something affecting it like dust and dirt like DP says above.
If you have another start up drive, firewire or internal, and you had enough space on it you might consider installing a previous OS 10.5 on there and start up from it. If the problem went away you would know it's 10.5.5. Perhaps even if you started up from your OS disc the problem might go away and again you'd know it was 10.5.5. Apple was made aware of the problem on some machines and said they were going to come out with a fix, but I don't think they ever did.
Post back and say what the situation is, especially if you just recently updated to 10.5.5.
And post back with what kind of G5 you have, look in the "About this Mac" window.
Your card may be dying, but on the other hand it might be as easy as pulling it out, blowing it out, and putting the card back in again.

  • Has anyone done a MacBook Pro Exchange?

    Hey guys,
Just wondered if I could ask you guys what you think of getting a replacement for my MacBook Pro - it's well within warranty, and I'm having a fair amount of problems with it!
    1) The fans sound like a card in a bicycle spoke - and when I get this sound crashes are quite often.
    2) When using my Bluetooth, I need to restart the machine sometimes, as it will just STOP working, then when i restart it the next time, I will not be able to START BLUETOOTH without another restart
    3) The machine ZAPS me - YES, you read it - and no its nothing to do with any funky power settings, or chords or anything - bog standard stuff, straight into any socket makes the machine give off a fair amount of static shock that can be felt by other people touching me!
    4) My mouse click seems ¨broken¨ sometimes - the thing seems to almost pivot in the middle up and down and makes a horrible CRUNCH sound and doesnt click properly... which is strange because 99% of the machines life it has been plugged in in lid closed mode to an external display/keyboard/mouse
    5) The lid closed button has become very stiff and quite unusable sometimes which is worrying.
The machine is less than a year old, and I am covered by Apple Care - but like I said 99% of the machine's life (apart from when I first had it out the box!) has been spent on my desk, plugged into a external display, keyboard and mouse.
i'm pretty unhappy with the problems I'm having with it, and would quite happily hand it over to Apple for an exchange - just wondered if anyone has had any similar situations exchanging the product with Apple
    Thanks,
    G

i have exchananged my mbp. i had a lot of problems with my 5 month old computer, so i went to the the apple store. • Has anyone replaced their MacBook Air Late 2010 battery?

Looking at the iFixit replacement part, is it better to have Apple do it, or is it easy enough to handle?  Does anyone know what Apple charges for battery replacement?

    Here is the price list:
    Ciao.

  • Has anyone ever had a USB port on their Macbook Pro suddenly go dead?

I was just wondering whether anyone using a MAcbook Pro Retina has suddenly had one of their USB ports die on them? My one port does not seem to recongise any peripheral hardware I attach to the port and I am confused why this should have happened. Apart from the obvious reason which is probably that the USB port has died I was just wondering whether this is a common fault with these machines and if it is, whether someone else may have a few words of wisdom related to how to solve the problem. The machine is not even 6 months old so I am reluctant to simply write this off to a failed USB port which will be the first time this has ever happened to me. I would value any input.

    Hi C,
You have a one year warranty and I would definitely bring this to Apple for diagnosis and repair.

  • Anyone? (upgraded Macbook Pro 2.4ghz) ?

Has anyone here done an upgrade to their macbook pro 2.4ghz from Tiger to Leopard without any issues? .. .like slowness in leopard or anything...

Yeah - I did the upgrade yesterday and it ran without a hitch - much faster than I expected it to actually. I did "upgrade" option that overwrites the Tiger installation.
In playing with it over the last day I like it, everything feels and looks a little crisper and the new features work pretty well.
The only issue I have found is that if the screen goes to sleep when I am running on battery power I can't get it to wake up unless I push the F7 key, and when it does the mouse movement is a little jumpy. I can work around this for now, and will report it to Apple.

  • Has anyone upgraded your MacBook Air SSD? Is it possible?

Just out of curiosity, Can you upgrade your SSD? Have any of you upgraded your SSD in your Mid 2012 MacBook Air? If so, what did you use and how much can the 2012 Air SSD take?
    THANKS

This is what I found below on the OWC site. My Macbook Air is 5,2 and it says that it is compatible.  I checked the video and looks pretty straight forward. I am just looking for what people's experiences were and what the outcome was... Has anyone upgraded their SSD to 1TB? Good or bad idea?

  • Icloud has disappeared from my MacBook Pro

iCloud has disappeared from my MacBook Pro.  I suspect I may have inadvertently deleted it.  It is definitely not anywhere to be found within the Preferences section.  How can I download it please when it is not on my Mac anywhere and when I go into the Apple store their instructions assume it is sitting on my computer.  I do have an iphone and am about to purchase an iPad.  Is there any  iCloud go across to the Mac Book Pro if I sync the two items.  Thank you for your help. How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1.          In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b.          or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3.          In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4.          On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5.          Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6.          Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7.          In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8.          If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9.          In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10.          If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11.          Type in your password, click “OK”
Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12.          In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
Notes:          Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update .....
    Default selection
Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

  • Has anyone taken the glass off a glossy display?

I'm looking to buy an iMac, but do not care for the glossy screen. I noticed a reference in another thread about someone taking the glass off in a youtube video and watched that.
So, has anyone taken the glass off successfully and is happy with the result?

Well, having over 15 years experience with Apple Computers, the Glossy Screen is the stupidest and most irresponsible idea ever. So what HP, Compaq, Dell and the like decided Gloss was all the craze!...
Apple should know better than to jump on the bandwagon by now being the trend setters they have ALWAYS been. Apple should offer the option the way they do with their Laptops so one can choose if they want glossy or matt. Being a color correction expert, the gloss is just the icing on the doodoo brown cake for the 20" Aluminum iMac TN Displays. Either way you cut it, garbage is garbage and covering it up with something that adds blinding glare is just that... A cover up.
I was one of the first schmucks who bought one of these 20-inchers and it is the sole Apple computer purchase I've regretted from day one. Sure it looks pretty and all and is quite elegant but make no mistake about it... the Aluminum iMacs fall FAR short of Apples mark ranking right down in the gutter with the disaster that was the Quadra series before Mr. Jobs came back to Apple and cleaned house.
If anyone wants to buy mine I'll let it go stacked with all the software & 3 Gigs of Ram for $1,000.00 shipped!
