Having bad luck asking questions in this forum...

I wonder if there is a better way or better visibility in this forum? All my questions go unanswered..
Is there a specified format or does it depend on the location?
Thanks..

Hi palkin,
"All my questions go unanswered.."
Wow, you made 4 posts so far. 4 posts in 3 threads (including this one). 2 of those threads got answers. One answer arrived just one hour after questioning - on an early Monday morning! What more do you want/expect?
You know this is a forum of enthusiastic people, ginving answers without any payment? We have to work and do our own stuff too!

  • Asking Questions in different forums...

I used to be able to figure out how to ask questions in individual forums easily. Last night, from my home computer, I could NOT figure out how to ask any forum any question.
I am now at work on a Dell Something-or-other PC and it works easily.
    Why is this???
Thanks for your help - Dennis

Hey denmicone - you think that's bad, I can't even figure out if you're asking a question or making a statement... OR are you saying you could not POST a question 'cause your iMac wasn't working right over your internet connection at home. You think your puzzled, I'm already lost and it's only 7:30AM, please enlighten us, Good luck, Rick

  • Is there a limit of number of questions in this forum?

Because I posted some questions which were removed..

Is there a limit of number of questions in this forum? No, but forum etiquette strongly suggests you keep a thread on any individual topic continuous (that means together no matter how long that thread might become). So, you should NOT post separate individual questions for every tiny nuance you might have.
The inherent nature of a forum is that thread topics get spread far apart as time goes by. If your inquiry is splattered into individual new posts, they WILL get scattered and your topic will no longer make any sense.
Anyone you hope to respond to you will lose all focus on the topic and will just no longer try to give you answers.

  • How to effectively ask a question on this forum

Ok, so this'll take a little explaining. I was kinda bored over my lunch break, so i decided I'd write a general reference for how to post well on this forum. I realize that many people aren't gonna read this the first time they post, but i thought it would be a good thing to reference when replying to people who post a poor question.
_10 Ways to Post a Good Question on this Forum_
_1) Write a descriptive subject line_
This is the first thing that people see, and it influences how they read a question. Subjects like "Java error" tell people nothing about your problem. Subjects like "How to implement a SAX parser for use in multiple classes" are infinitely more useful.
_2) Don't use phrases such as URGENT or HELP ME!!! or IT'S DUE IN AN HOUR!!!!_
The people on this forum don't have the same priorities as you, and therefore don't care if your problem is urgent. In fact, they find it rude to assert that your problem should be solved before somebody else's just because you procrastinated. They also don't pleas for help too fondly. Typically posters who write this sort of phrase in their post has given up and become helpless, making it very difficult to guide them to the answer. Also, keep the caps lock off. THERE IS NOTHING MORE ANNOYING THAN ALL-CAPS POSTS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE YELLING, and people will make you aware of how it annoys them.
_3) Dont post your homework assignments asking for "teh codez"_
You will get flamed like none other for this sort of question. You may get codes, but when you submit them to your instructor, you may get suspended or expelled (depending on your school's cheating policy). The people on this forum are more advanced than you in Java, and can make it painfully obvious to your instructor that you cheated.
    _4) Write in normal English_
Think of this forum as your supervisor or instructor, you want to sound professional and convey your question effectively. SMS speak or any other sort of abbreviation of the English language becomes difficult to read, and many people on this forum won't even try. This forum is filled with professionals in the Java world, and they are accustomed to reading true English (full sentences).
    _5) Don't be helpless_
This forum is here mainly to help with specific problems, not to teach you Java. If you don't know where to start, a person is most likely going to tell you to write the solution out on paper first, breaking it down into small steps that can be accomplished by the computer.
    _6) Do your research_
Many of the questions posted can be solved with a quick Google search. You should check a few places before you even post a question. They include: this forum (do a forum search), Google (do a Google search), the API's (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/), and the Java Tutorials(http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/)
_7) Post code and errors with your question_
The answer to your problem is in the error messages and the code. Instead of asking a general question about for loops, post the code that you have written and the error info that you get. When asking a question it is IMPERATIVE that you have tried to do it your own way, because the people on the forum mostly won't do it for you, they'll only point out where you have done it wrong and try to help you fix it. Don't paraphrase your error messages, because there are subtleties in the actual messages that you may unknowingly edit out.
    _8) Don't Multi-post_
It is rude to post the same question multiple times or in multiple places in the this forum. This is for the same reason as #2, it makes it seem that you think your problem is more urgent or important than others' problems.
    _9) Don't resurrect dead threads_
If a thread is 3 years old, nobody is going to remember it, so make a new thread to ask your question. If you have a question about something in the old thread, reference it through a hyperlink.
    _10) Take it easy_
As long as the people in the forum see that you're legitimately trying to help yourself, they'll help you as much as they see fit. The biggest problem that newbies have is they rely on the forum to spoonfeed them the info, and it's not going to happen. They'll either get flamed or ignored. The people on the forum aren't trying to find "fresh meat to flame", they legitimately want to help you, and they'll typically give you fair warning if you're doing something annoying or unorthodox.

There does seem to be a way to sticky posts, but I think only mods and admins have the power to do it. There's one over on the Generics forum : http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=316
I've been trying to add a pseudo-signature to my posts as far as possible, with a link to a page which pretty much covers this stuff, only it's on JavaRanch:
People on the forum help others voluntarily, it's not their job.
    Help them help you.
Learn how to ask questions first: http://faq.javaranch.com/java/HowToAskQuestionsOnJavaRanch
But I've had a couple of occasions where the OPs thought it was directed at them and they got a tad upset :)
And without hyperlinks, I'm not quite sure how many people actually take the pains to go to that page.
Ah well, no one can say I didn't try.

  • Posting Headstart questions on this forum

    Dear all,
The Headstart Oracle Designer forum was originally intended as a platform for discussions on the use of the Headstart Template Package and Utilities in conjuction with Oracle Designer. For this reason, the Oracle Headstart team monitors this forum and tries to answer questions and solve problems for our customers that are using Headstart.
As it turns out, the forum is now used for a much broader number of topics, including database and SQLnet, Web Server Generator, Forms 6i, non-Headstart related Designer issues, and many more. This is not a problem; appearently for some topics a more appropriate forum is not available and as long as people 'find eachother' on this forum it is serving its purpose.
An unfortunate side effect is that for the Headstart team it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate the 'real Headstart' topics in the list. Therefore we would like to ask anyone that wants to post a Headstart related topic to make this clear in the Subject. Ideally, this would be done by starting the subject with 'HST' when it involves the Template Package, or 'HSU' when it involved the Utilities. If you could then add the Headstart version number to it, it would really make our day! So for instance:
    "HST6i: Problem creating MSEL lov"
"HSU212: Error in "Create Find Window" utility
If you do not know how to classify your topic in this manner, at least make sure to put the word "Headstart" in the Subject.
    Thank you!
    Pete

    Hello all,
I would like to ask if someone in this list already experienced the folllowing issue.
After an upgrade of Developer Run time 6.0 (Patch 7), some ( not all !! ) forms generated with Designer 6.0 don't show the toolbar icons.
    Config : Win 2000 SP2 - DB 8.1.7 - Des 2K 6.0 - HSD 2.1

  • 2 questions about this forum

Since the forums have been reorganized (yeah, I know its been a while).  I never fail to be confused when I try to use them.
    For instance:
    1) At the top of the list of questions for adobe Bridge general discussion, I see the Heading:
    "Trending Questions"
What on earth is that supposed to mean.  What does "trending" mean in this unusual usage?
    2) How can I get an advanced search dialog for this particular forum? When I click on the `Be sure to search the forum' link it just pops me to a new page apparently 1 layer back from this forum to Bridge with the lamest search dialog I've seen on any forum.
I'd like to search for a particular poster, or a particular date range or etc etc.  How can I do that?

    Curt Y wrote:
Had to do a little research as "trending questions" was a puzzler.  You are looking at the  bridge general discussion page, and I always bring up the Bridge Forum page where trending is not there.  Think it refers to current questions.
Some forums have a "search this forum only" box, but none has been set up here.  You can the user name and have it return posts.  If you know the subject it is still more complete search to use google.
Back on an older thread ... You mention "Bringing up" the bridge forum on a different page than the one with that silly "Trending questions" baloney.
I'm curious how you do that... when I find the forums, ususally from a google search with "Adobe forums" Bridge or insert another adobe product where you see "Bridge" in the string.  That always lands me at the page with "Trending Questions" and with no obvious way to get to the actual forum other than a list near the top of page that includes "Bridge: General Discussion"... ok, clicking that again brings a page with the "Trending questions" non-sense.
At that point the only way I see to get to the actual forum is to click one of the "Trending questions", from that page you can see a link at the top that says: " Adobe Community > Bridge > Bridge General Discussion >   Discussions "
where you can finally get to a usable forum page.
One could, of course, book mark that... but it seems like a very unnecessary and convoluted path to find a usable forum.
I'm guessing there is some other obvious way I'm not seeing?

  • First Question, is this forum only in english?

I use Adobe Creative Design Web Premium Suite CS 6.0 on my computer here.
I have the second license installed om my Notebook at home.
Now I become a new very fast WIN 7 Computer and I would install CS 6 before I work with this computer in 1..2 Weeks on this new Computer - without deactivate first here on my working Computer.
    Is that possible?
Par example I install on my new computer CS6 with the activation Nr., then I become a message I can't install before i deactivate one license....???
    Thank you for a answer...
    Kind regards
    Kurt
My question on the top: is this forum only in english language???

First Answer:  No, the forums are not only in English language, but they are supported by a majority of people that do speak the English language.  If you look you will see an option to "Translate" which can sometimes be used to translate a posting to a different language.  I say "Sometimes" because sometimes it is broken and will not work and sometimes it will translate something to a form that is hard to understand.
As far as your activations go, you are only allowed two activations at any given time.  So if you have two already activated then you need to deactivate (Help -> Deactivate) one of them in order to activate yet another machine.

  • I'm having bad luck with motherboards from Newegg.

    Hi all,
I have successfully built several systems from the ground up with motherboards from Microcenter. However, I'm having no luck with the 2 motherboards i got from Newegg.
The first one, ASUS P6T, would not reboot unless the reset button was pressed a few times. Then i ordered the GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 X58. I had high hopes but it  too came out of the box with a problem. It start/stops/starts/stops.... I discovered that if i remove the 8pin power connecter, the mb starts but still will not post. I removed and replaced all components including the PSU and still no joy.

The original PSU i got two weeks ago for the new system is a PC Power & Cooling (PP&C )910 watt unit. I think thats plenty of power. The PSU tester diaplays the following:
    +5V = 5.3
    -12V = 12.2
    +12V1 = 12.3
    +12V2 = 12.3
    +3.3V = 3.4
    5VSB = 5.3
    P.G. = 300ms
I plugged the PP&C 910w PSU as well as a completely different 400w PSU into the GA-EX58-UD5 with the following components removed - no drives, cards or case fans and all drive/audio/usb connectors disconnected - just the i7 920 CPU and ram - the mb acted in the same manner.  Actually, its the PSU that's reacting to the motherboard i think. I can hear both  PSU's "click" like its tripping a breaker then resetting - hence the mb starting and stopping.
Anyway, after i removed some and then all of the ram, the system started without stopping but still no post.  I have also been getting a debug error code of 62. From what i understand, the error code indicates that the motherboard is not recognizing the ram.
It would appear that your both wrong in this case.
I searched the internet and found some posts where either the bios has to updated to accept ram i have or the ram has to be replaced with something the GA-EX58-UD5 likes. In one post,  the current ram, Crucial DDR3 1066 (thats what i got), was replaced with Corsair XMS3 1333 ram and the system booted up.
    I'll keep you updated.

  • Poll about asking questions in the forum.

It seems that really few users noticed the poll that's been running for a month, see this thread: Asking questions on the Adobe Forums

I personally dislike polls where the answers aren't mutually exclusive.
I voted for No. I always start a new discussion myself.
It's not because the search doesn't work, though I *have* had incomplete results from it.  It's not because I don't know it's there.  I voted for the second entry because because I'm a regular who asks fairly few questions, and for the few times I do start a new thread I would like to specifically make a new discussion.  I already pretty much know what a search will (or won't) turn up.
But what decisions will get made due to my choice of #2, which contributed a fair percentage to the results since only 11 people have voted so far?  That the "Ask a Question" field should be eliminated?

  • FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?

When asking a question on the Premiere Pro user-to-user forums, you can make it easier for folks to help you by proactively providing the answers to the following questions:
What version of Premiere Pro? Include the minor version number (e.g., Premiere Pro CC 2014.2 (8.2)).
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.9.5"---not just "Mac".
What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime".
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
What were you doing when the problem occurred?
    Has this ever worked before?
What other software are you running?
Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about your GPU, any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU) and the type of media drives you are using.
What kind of GPU do you have installed, including make, model number, and GPU driver?
Are you using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration?
Do you still have the issue when choosing Project Settings > General > Renderer > Mercury Playback Engine (Software Only)?
Does the problem only happen with your final output, with previews, or both?
Screenshots and sample movies are often very useful in showing exactly what you're seeing, and can thus make getting an answer faster and easier.
Also, please do everyone a favor and check the Premiere Pro FAQ list and also do a quick Premiere Pro Community Help search to see if your question has been addressed already.

  • Having bad luck with external drives

I installed Sonnett drives about 4 months ago ( 4TB ) Two drives have already gone bad. Sonnett has been good and shipped new ones but I wonder if I can keep things simple and go back to internal ATA
drives. I can install 3 1TB drives in my mac pro and that will give me enough space. ( and I won't miss the fan noise in my very small suite ) My question. I shoot in XDCAM HD, capture in ProRes. Will these internal drives be fast enough? Any thoughts? Thanks for any and all input.
    Best,
    Tom

GO HERE and download the AJA Data Rate Calculator Application Version 6.0.1.
It's a tiny little app that helps you benchmark drive throughput.
With an eight drive system (in RAID 0) I'd hope you'd be generating over 400 MB/s
A single internal isn't going to get that. If you were to connect the three as a RAID 0, you should get north of 200MB/s.
Whether this will work for you or not all depends on how many streams you need to pull through the system. The number of streams includes renders, effects, and so on.

  • Am I having bad luck?

On 12/10/13 I placed an order for T540p laptop. It arrived on 12/16/13, and the next day I found out that laptop would not go into “sleep mode” when the lid was closed. After I spent over two hours with tech support they suggested I send the new laptop to be fixed – I called the CS and requested the refund.
On 12/17/13 I placed another order for T540p laptop.
On 12/19/13 I called Customer Service. I asked if I could upgrade the order to Windows7 Pro.  “Nett” told me that the current order will need to be cancelled, and another new order will have to be placed for identical laptop but with Windows7 Pro instead of Windows8.
“Nett” created new order, and promised me shipping on or before 12/27/13. He told me he cancelled the previous order I placed the day before, and that I should receive the confirmation e-mail shortly. I never received confirmation of cancellation.
On Dec. 20 I spoke to someone else from CS  - she said I had TWO orders placed, promised that order w/ Windows8 will be-re-routed back to warehouse after it ships.
The laptop w/ Windows8 arrived today to my house instead of Lenovo warehouse.
Laptop with windows7 did not even ship yet…
THE SHIPPING DATE NOW IS 01/06/14 – WHAT THE IS HAPPENING?
I think I am going to return both Thinkpads and get something else from HP instead…

It is incredibly easy for debris to get stuck in the headphone jack so check there is nothing stopping the headphones from being able to be pushed all the way in. A quick clean out with a cotton bud and some solvent may help if it is dirt.

  • How to attach a file with Questions in this forums

    Sir/Madam,
How could I attach a file which is .gif, .jpg, .pdf, etc.
which is related to the question and that can clear my question to the viewers
Please if any one knows reply me soon.
    Thanks and regards

You cannot attach files like pdf or excel however you can always set a link to your screenshots.
For example If I have to show my report data or formula or anything I do the following.
1: Click Printscreen on the keyboard
2: Open Paint (Microsoft paint from Start>All Programs>accessories --> Paint)
    3: Click Edit and paste
4: Cut out the unnecessary images
5: Save the file as Jpeg (File --->Save As --->Jpeg)
    6: Go to [www.photobucket.com] or [www.flikr.com]
    7: Upload the image there
8: Open a new thread and click on the "chain" icon next to the <> icon which is next to the B I and U icons
9: Paste the link and Name the link
This is will do the trick.
    Hope this helps
    Many thanks
