HD Colour Correction

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to get your thoughts on colour correcting HD formats, to be more precise DVCPRO HD. I am of the understanding that a broadcast monitor is the industry way of seeing accurate colour for colour correction. But this is my thinking, due to the physical limits of CRT Technology is it the only method of seeing accurate colour?
If we were to use a HDLink box with a 24" monitor for colour correction would this be ok? Or would we have to consider both methods? Your thoughts would be very much appreciated and if you need any more info from me please let me know

I am using a Sony PVM-14L5 Multiformat monitor. This accepts an HD signal via component, or like I am doing it, via and HD SDI option card. It has 800 scanlines of resolution and when balanced, comes DARN CLOSE to equaling the $35,000 HD monitors.
A computer monitor is not acceptable for broadcast color correction. It doesn't show you the proper colors. I have seen only 2 LCD screens that I deem good for HD color correction, one is made by a company called ecinemasystems.com and the other I think was a JVC..but not sure. CRT is still the way to go until more LCD options hit the market.
IMHO.

  • Our EFFECT COLOUR CORRECTION COLOUR BALANCE  feature doesn't work on solids. Any clues?

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a light sabre effect. He has followed a series of instructions from the net, but no matter what we try the solid will not change colour using the EFFECT > COLOUR CORRECTION > COLOUR BALANCE feature on the layer.
On the linked page is the file + full instructions:
    http://beyondthewallmedia.com/?q=aftereffectsproblem
Could someone more experienced with After Effects please help us out and tell us why this feature isn't working in this project?
"Using your mouse to slide the numbers, drag the 3 “Blue Balance” labels to the right, up to 100 is you wish. This should start to change your glowing white lightsabre into a blue one. Play around with it, till you have the colour you want. You can slide the “Red” and “Green” Balance labels to the left to lessen their effect too."
Would really value someone taking a look at this for us. Thanks.

I agree with Mylenium.  There are some serious flaws in the instructions.  With no colour in the solid, Color Balance will have no effect.
But your project is also incorrectly built, according to the instructions: you've duplicated the mask 5 times, rather than the layer.
In the precomp, make your solid blue, with just one feathered mask, duplicate the layer 3-5 times, switch all to Add transfer mode.

  • Problem with colour correction

Hi, I am not able to use the colour correction filter (3-way) on the project I am working on, or any new projects I create. I am however able to use it when I on a previous project. Has anyone got any ideas on why this may be? I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks
    Patrick

I was having the same problem but i fixed it for me.
go to sequence, settings, render control and check filters and frame blending for speed under render and play back.
    hope that works

  • Final Cut 10.1 - Crashes when Colour Correcting.

Every time i try to do colour correction in FCP 10.1 i receive this error message and have no choice but to quit FCP — "The application detected an error that prevents changes from being saved. To avoid losing your work, quit Final Cut Pro."
I am able to adjust Saturation and Exposure without a problem.
The error only arises when i am editing the Color.
I have already tried reseting my FCP preference and repairing disk permissions, neither of which have solved this for me.

Hi I just wanted to share a solution I found for this problem.
I had converted around 3 simple projects from FCPx 10.0.9 to 10.1.1, then I started noticing the color correction crash.
To fix it I removed the converted projects and libraries and made new ones. I had to remove all my projects (Timelines) from 10.0.9 but I had already finished those projects and just kept them for backups, so I figured it was worth a try to remove them and see if the crash would stop.
I have been getting no crashes now that all I have in FCPx are 10.1.1 projects and libraries and events.
Try it out and see if it works for you.

  • Best workflow for colour correction?

I’m still new to fcp and Iv e just started using the colour correction tools. I haven’t looked at color (part of the final cut studio yet) this may seem stupid but what’s the best workflow? After I’ve cut every thing and then go though it one clip at I time it seems a long-winded way of doing it as some of my cuts are only a 6-15 frames.
Dose every one else colour correct their clips before starting to cutting the footage?

You always color correct after...and you always do each shot individually, even if they are 15 frames.
Color is a highly professional application, I suggest getting a tutorial for it. Or learning the 3-way color corrector to start...to get your feet wet with color correction. Because Color is VERY deep and has many many controls that can be intimidating.

  • Problems colour correcting multicam in angle editor

    Hope someone can help:
I'm trying to colour correct one of the multicam clips in the angle editor.
When I click colour match and hover over the other clip part of this multi cam clip nothing happens and the 'apply match' button remains greyed out.
I can colour match the individual cuts back in normal time line but of course I don't want to waste time doing it to every single clip/cut.
Why won't it let me colour correct in angle editor?
The mouse turns into a mini camera like icon when I hover over the clip i want to match to.
    Any ideas?

I have spent the better part of today searching for solutions to this very same issue.
Tom - I realize how awesome you are to this community - and have learned a great deal from you - but this link you posted has the same question posed but NOT answered -- there seems to be no solution.
I have recreated this same issue.
I can color match two clips in a timeline -- but cannot get the same exact work flow to work in the multi-cam clip.
Basically it all works as expected right up until I click the clip I want to match -- when I do that - nothing happens and the apply match blue button stays greyed out.
This is posted all over the forums at Creative Cow and here with no real solution.
Surely something has happened to cause this on my part but I cannot figure out what.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to do a colour correction like this!?

    Hey guys,
I saw on YouTube this nice colour correction, and now I want to ask you how to do this? Is there anywhere on YouTube (or I don't know) a tutorial for this?
--> [The colours from 16sec till the end] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz2DRX4oxgI&feature=channel
    Thank you.

Create a comp-sized solid layer above your footage layer.  Apply the 4 Colour Gradient effect to the solid.
Switch the blending mode of the solid layer to Overlay.
Experiment with different colours and different blending modes until you get the desired result.

  • Colour Correction for Web

Hi, I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some kind words of advice
I make videos for DVD and have recently been putting excerpts up on my website
I have no trouble colour correcting for DVD using a broadcast reference monitor, but when exporting to H264 obviously the rules are different.
The colour does not have that Zing of YUV Tv's
So to date I have been turning up the saturation, midrange and highlight brightness and dropping the blacks further, and trying to get the Canvas to look as good as possible
Of course it doesn't help that my cinema display is lighter on the left than on the right!
I'm going for 400 x 225 H264 @ 280kbits sec - looks washed out but even at higher bit rates there's little improvement
Does anybody have any wise words of advice here!
-rules of thumb, quick tips or practical experience.
    Thanks Steve

    Yes, Thank you
Mpeg 4 has better contrast and gives a pretty good picture but obviously needs much higher bitrates and more detail control. Are you suggesting that Popwire compression master is the way to go? ( I sense a new and expensive learning curve!)
However I do like H264 as auto keyframe works well and file size is small
(much better than Flash 8 I think)
Is there a way to improve footage for H264 ?
Or is Mpeg4 really the best way for SD footage?
Apple make a big deal about H264 and their movie site looks good!
    Thanks

  • Shimmer or flicker after colour correction

    Greetings all,
I had great fun doing a selective colour correction turning a vibrant green ground cover to an autumnal brown, without affecting the figure or stones moving in the picture.
Only problem is, areas which are colour changed shimmer or flicker in intensity. it is subtle, but there, and I am sure very obvious on a big screen.
I have played with edge control, luma and saturation width and softness, as well as de-interlace and flicker filters - to no avail.
I do not know the root of the problem...it is as though colour values which the selective colour correct filter applied to are fluctuating subtly at a high frequency. (nothing visible to this effect in the unfiltered clip). I am stumped.
    any ideas anyone?

I'm going to assume you're looking at this on a CRT (how else would you see the flicker), and that it is rendered at full quality.
Your total levels after correction may be freaking out the monitor. Turn the saturation on in the waveform monitor and you will probably see spikes going through the roof. This is possible with a normal legal signal, but you probably wouldn't get the flicker if wasn't extreme (past 120IRE on and external WFM). An easy fix for this should be to use the broadcast limiter filter, which will take out the problems usually with little visible effect on the picture. You could also just back off a bit on the saturation and/or white levels in the CC.
This seems a little unlikely considering you just removed the vibrant colors instead of adding them. But who knows...
You don't say whether this is a video clip or a still image. If it's a reduced still it may have other issues ythat were masked before. An easy thing to play with is to apply a very gentle Gaussian blur, vertical only. Sometimes as little as .1 (don't know what units this setting is referring to) will do the trick.

  • Is it possible to safely monitor good colour correction using BM Intensity?

Is it possible to safely monitor good colour correction using my output of my Black Magic Intensity Card? It has an HDMI out so Im thinking there is no need to go to an external VTR and then into a Monitor. Also, I cannot afford an HD monitor.. not even close! SO im thinking to use a 1080p Samsung computer/TV monitor. I hear for the money they make excellent (budget) monitor substitutes?!
OR maybe just buy another Apple 23" HighDEf monitor?
FYI: I’m using AVCHD & HDV , encoding into ProRes and ProRes HQ.

This question keeps coming up in different contexts, with a variety of answers. Correct color depends on correct calibration all the way through the chain from digital signal to playback. No single hardware piece can do it all, even a perfect monitor, without calibration.
As JP correctly states, Rec709 is the standard for HD, Rec 601 for SD. These standards define the color temperature of gray, 6500 in both cases, and the specific color of the primary that generate the 6500. The 6500 needs to be generated correctly at all gray levels from 0 to 100 IRE.
In addition, the luminosity needs to track the 2.2 (or 2.5) gamma curve closely.
Lastly, the monitor needs to have 0 overscan, and high enough resolution to clearly see the finest resolution the input is capable of.
Some of these adjustments can be done by eye - most require a spectrophotometer of some kind, and a monitor that has all the adjustment capability to perform the adjustments.
The best way to make these adjustments is in hardware, but in the cases where this isn't possible, it is possible to generate a color look up table (LUT) to compensate for some, but not all errors. Apple's colorsync is such a LUT, although it cannot adjust for the primary colors, it can do gamma and the 6500 balance.
More of an answer than you wanted I know, but that is just the way it works.
You can have less expensive equipment give good results with proper calibration, and the best equipment uncalibrated provide terrible results.

  • Delving into the murky seas of Colour Correction

    Hi,
Recently we went on location and took a series of test footage shots. These shots were from various locations, as well as various times of day. We are aware of the "Before 10am and After 4pm" shooting rule, but, being the curious little chaps we are, we decided to try a range of shots and see what we can achieve in post with colour correction (sorry, I can bring myself to leave out the "u").
I have two main questions that I hope can be answered by someone with more colour correction skills than I have (and I am guessing that includes most of the panel here! )
    1) Our project is aimed at the HDTV market, and will hopefully be aired in the UK. Now that I am using colour correction software (SA Color Finesse 3 for now) I notice that there are "Limiters" that can be used to prevent breaching certain broadcast rules. The only choices I have in SACF3 are for NTSC, PAL or ATSC. Does HDTV fall under any of those? Speaking to some of the others, we are under the impression that HD is in a league of its own. I have a specific shot that I am testing with, and when the limiters are enabled, there is very little I can do without breaching some limit or another. There is a terrible blue tint to the shot, and when I adjust the RGB settings for Master, and then Blue channel, the sky breaches the limits almost immediately.
    2) The second question is specifically for the shot mentioned above - I will add a screenshot below. I am not sure what was done on location to produce such a terrible blue tint, but it is in fact a brilliant shot for me to test on. I guess that a perfect shot would have been pretty useless as tool to hone my skills on! If I use no limiters on SACF3, I can get the brightness up quite nicely and remove a great deal of the tint, returning the shot to a very pleasant one - on my PC that is - How would I go about doing this, assuming the answer to question 1 is that I need those limiters enabled.
Well, I hope this makes sense, as it sounded good in my head, but Devereux junior has picked up his second cold at 6months, so the little sleep I was getting....has just been halved again!
    Thanks guys.
    Pierre

    Hi Guys,
    CFG_2451,
Thank you for the link - I will look into the book first thing in the morning. I have already built up a rather nice After Effects, Filming, Lighting and Green Screening library, I look forward to adding Colour Correction to it. I did assume that I would have to adhere to the PAL standards, but hoped that HD would do away with all the worry - Oh well....
    Dave,
Thanks for the tip, I am a big fan of Andrew Devis, and have collected his entire After Effects basics tutorials so far - He has a great way of explaining the tools he uses, and I enjoy his clips. I will check out his Color Finesse tutorials tomorrow while I wait for the book.
    Mylenium,
Thanks for the info. I had my previous iMac colour corrected to work under the specific lights we had in the old office, now I am in a new office, and I have a new PC. I hope that the monitor I have for the PC will be ok. We bought a nice large LED HD TV a while back, and the guy who came to do our colour correction explained that it was a bit of a waste, as it has so many "Auto" settings with no real explanation of what they do. As a result, he explained we would never know exactly what was going on, or if the TV was trying its own correction in the background - making what we see, completely different to other screens. I dont think we can get a production monitor at the moment, but Ill get them in to check what they can do with my PC screen. I still use an iMac, but it has the latest OS on, and according to the colour chaps, the software and calibration unit they use is incompatible with it. So unless I want to buy my own calibration units, Ill have to stick to the PC.
Once again, thanks to all so far. thes past few months have been an incredible journey, and withtout the input from the people on this forum, it would have been over ages ago!
(I am going to have to make a special mention of each of you in the shows credits!)

  • Tutorial for Colour Correction and Green screen

Anyone know of any good tips to remove the green look from white hair? or any tutorials I can read for colour correction with green screen?
I filmed a getlemen who has white hair on a green screen. The colour of his hair picked up a slight tint of green and I need to remove it. Can anyone lend some sound advice.
    Thanks

Your best chance is to study the manual carefully and to cycle through the chromakeying filters you have at your disposal. If you were using DV, you will probably need to purchase a far more capable keying application, one that compensates for DV's terrible chroma resolution.
The books on the shelves at Borders and Barnes/Noble for After Effects and FCP will help you get the most from your existing key filters. You will ned up stacking several copies of your footage with different key settings. Without preproduction, the proper lighting, a good camera and adequate tape format, managingr a good chromakey in post is very difficult.
    google chromakey, too.

  • I need to colour correct copies of nearly three hundred paintings.

I took great care to find colour corrected daylight lamps, but, they are of the fluorescent kind, similar to the eco lamps that are now commonplace. Because they do not have a continuous spectrum (that tugsten would have) they have given all the paintins an unwanted colour cast. Can I correct one in Lightroom and save the corrections and apply them to the remaining images? If so is there a recommended way of doing it.

All tungsten bulbs are full spectrum. Their problem is simply that they tend to be very orange and so require a white balance adjustment, but that's easy to do in Lightroom. My favorite incandenscent/tungsten bulbs are by SoLux, and my favorite fluorescents are by Full Spectrum Solutions.
But you can get some of the best results by photographing the paintings outdoors in natural sunlight — particularly on an overcast day — since there's a lot of bright, diffuse light, and you don't have a problem with bright spots as you do using bulb sources. What I do is bring my paintings outside and set them up beneath an overhang so the light isn't too direct, and place a sheet of black velvet under them to prevent the ground from reflecting light back up onto them.

  • Colour corrections not saving and not exporting

Am puzzled by something in FCE. I did a whole load of colour corrections, then saved and closed the project. Whenever I re-open the project, all the colour corrections are un-done. All other edits are unaffected. This happens repeatedly.
Also, after re-doing the colour corrections, saving and NOT closing, I exported the project to MPEG2. The colour corrections did not come through on the exported file.
My timeline is 3.5hrs long, and re-doing all these colour corrections is *time consuming*.
Please does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Any help appreciated.

    No.
If you have created some modified effects (eg. 3 second dissolve) and put them into your FCE Favoutites Bin, trashing the preferences will trash these. They can easily be re-created or save this Bin somewhere else and bring it back if that's the course of least resistance.
