HD fan running, Fan temp 97˚F - ?normal

I have a 20.5 imac with fan noise.
Two of the fans run around 1450 rpms.
The hard drive fan runs at 5150 rpms despite the hard drive temp being the lowest of the sensors running 97 F.
The hardware test on the shorter test shows no abnormalities. Resetting the SMU did not change the fan noise.
Any thoughts? This is supposed to be a quite Mac. It is the noisiest by far.

Here are my 27" i7 stats for comparison (temps in Fahrenheit), taken from iStat Pro:
Optical drive fan: 998 rpm
Hard drive fan: 1099
CPU fan: 940
HD: 103 degrees
CPU: 92
Ambient: 65
GPU Diode: 117
GPU Heatsink: 113
Mem Controller: 99
Optical Drive: 92
Power Supply 2: 112
Under most conditions, those are typical readings for my machine. When doing video encoding, on the other hand, the CPU has reached 155 F, the power supply goes to 140 or 150, and all three fans spin at >1200 rpm. Things go back to normal pretty quickly, though, once the encoding ends. Yeah, I know I don't have the same machine as you but you asked for some benchmarks...
One more thought: do you have pets or is your computer in a dusty location? You might want to try cleaning all the external air vents, if you haven't already done so.

Fans run full speed when using Parallels

I have Parallels installed on my MacBook but the problems is, whenever I run Windows XP, the fans run at full speed. I try not to run too many programs but nothing seems to help.
Any suggestions?

I think that it's normal that the fans run full speed when you use Parallels. It also means that your MacBook's thermal paste was applied well.
Runing Windows XP in Parallels is a CPU intensive task and it takes a lot of power to run it. As a consequence the CPU get hot and the heat is transfered to the cooler, where the temp sensors sense it and make the fans run faster.
It's normal.
I bet your MB doesn't get as hot as some do...

CPU Fan running fast

Hey Guys!
I've some Problems with my IMAC 27" early 2011.
The CPU fan is running at about 3800 RPM even though, the sensors say, the CPU is pretty cold.
Here the Temps that iStat gives me:
HD: 41° C
CPU: 33° C
GPU: 43° C
MEM: 38° C
Optical: 38° C
CPU Usage: User 0-2 %, System 0%, Nice 0%, Idle: 98-100%
The problem occours some 10-15 minutes after I've switched on the IMAC and it stays, even if I restart the IMAC for at least 2 hours. Once the fan is returning to it's normal RPM (after 2 hours or more, mostly after being in Standby), i can work for several days and it doesn't return, unless the IMAC is switched off and on again. I think, the IMAC slows down, when it has this problem. Especially scrolling in Safari is extremely slow then. Sometimes it even stops!
Things I tried to correct this:
SMC-Reset --> Didn't succeed.
Start in 'Safe Mode' --> Well it's running in save mode right now and sounds like a vacuum-cleaner.
Disconnect all externals --> Nothing
Deactivate Time-Machine --> Nothing
P-Ram-Reset (?) --> Nothing
New User Account --> Nothing
I think the problem first started to be there some days after installing Lion. By the way: My MBP 15" Late 2008 runs great with the same stuff on it.
Anybody got any ideas?

I've got the opposite problem, my AMD CPU is running around 55C and the fan hardly ever exceeds 1200 rpm most of the time its running around 950rpm. I think the 48C to 65C is running on the edge of to hot in my opinion, I like to stay around 35C-40C. Motherboard, video card and hard drive all stay in the 30C range. I tried to speed the fan up with SpeedFan program but it can not interface.
I hope someone can give us a answer, I checked the UEFI and could not find any setting allowing controlling fan speeds on my ENVY 700-200z/AMD A10 cpu.

I'm sure I read that the CPU fan should not be runniing all the time? The fan runs constantly even when I'm not working at my PC. Is that normal? The box does not feel hot at all and I'm not running the TV card.
It's not that it's noisy but I had hoped it would be silent, like my Pentium M laptop. The fan on that only starts up when the computer is working hard, and then very rarely.

i don't know about the 865PRO, as i've never used one, or seen one in action
but on the other Megas, the fan usually rotates at a slower speed, until the temp increases under CPU load, then it speeds up to compensate
P4 Prescotts are hot CPUs anyway, and if they aren't installed correctly, they'll run hotter. try removing the heatsink, cleaning off all the old thermal pad, and using a good thermal compound such as Arctic Silver 5. apply a thin layer to the CPU die surface, and then refit the heatsink. make sure no stray cables are blocking airflow to the CPU heatsink fan.

HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory

Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place. I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor. Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick. I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors. If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above. I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly. You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay. You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use? Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power. Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks? Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates. Is your BIOS the latest? Welcome, and let us know what turns out to be the problem so others can benefit too. Scott

Cpu and fans running at 100%

I've been working on this 20" iMac G5 for a couple weeks now and I'm stumped.
I've reset the smu, the nvram, wiped and put on a fresh install of 10.5, updated to 10.5.8 and still the computer is LOUD.
The fans run at a constant 100%, so I check the processor temp and it was 85c the instant the screen came on. So I proceeded to check the ventilation, took it all apart and all the air ways are clear, I checked, cleaned, and applied brand new thermal paste, put it all back together and still the instant the screen comes on the fans go to 100% and temp jumps to 85c
Then a student said "is it working hard?" Just to humor him I launched the activity monitor and to my surprise it was. The processor was running at 100% and the process that was doing it all is "top" running from the user 'root'.
I proceeded to type kill 321 (the pid) and the processor dropped to 10% and after about half an hour the temp was a normal 60c and the fans went quiet, but the instant I log out or reboot that 'top' process kicks back on and the machine starts over heating.
I've tried 10.4 and 10.5, wiped the HD about 5times and 'top' keeps running the processor off the deep end with every install.
I've tried permission repairs and hardware checks, even ran the full techtools deluxe scan.
I've tried finding others with this problem but it is understandably difficult to search for problems with 'top'.
It is no longer under warranty and no one is going to miss it if I just throw it out, but I don't want to give up on a 2.1Ghz machine for student use if that can be avoided.
I'm willing to try any ideas to get that process fixed, the only idea I have left is to replace the cmos battery, and prey to the computer gods, but I doubt that will do anything.

Fan Runs Automatically on Start Up

My fan runs automatically upon start up and does not go off. I've tried resetting the SMC and it did not work. Help!

When using just normal everyday applications such as using about 30 min of Safari to surf the web or maybe something else, my fans run at full speed. I have just got a new logic board replacing my old faulty one. How can I fix the fan problem?

With more news for you and iMacG5 on the fans go crazy. I just got back my computer from the repair center. After more than a week under observation, the technician told me that they just couldn't replicate the problem. They had the computer running non-stop during all this time, not even allowingit to go to sleeo mode and nothing.
The CPU fan never went beyond 2300 rpm (or so) and never went to sleep mode on and off by itself. Furthermore, they ran all possible tests and everything comes back as OK.
Right now I have a movie running on the background, together with a photo processing software open and other smaller processes and the CPU fan is running at 4361 rpm !!! the temp of the CPU is 66.3 Celsius.
Any thoughts??? It's really making me crazy because the computer was neverlike this and now it sounds like a hair dryer. I emphasized with them the fact that this just started after they changed the logic board and as coincidence after Ioaded the security update 2006_04. The technician told me it may be software related. If the computer doesn't go to sleep by itself, then he recommended to reload the operating system.
Any comments appreciated.

CPU fan running full speed after 15 minutes

My 3 month old iMac 24" has just started having fan problems.
Before I went away on a training course, it was working fine. Left it switched off at the outlet for 3 days, now the CPU fan runs full speed after the iMac has been switched on for 15 to 20 minutes.
CPU temp is 24C, CPU heatsink is 28C. Ambient is 17C. CPU fan is 3600rpm. Other fans are normal.
CPU usage is less that 10%. Only Safari is running.
I've tried resetting the SMC - left all plugs disconnected for 15 minutes, reconnected mains power for 15 minutes, reconnected USB, then switched on.
Still the same - OK for 15 minutes, then CPU fan runs full speed.
Anything else that I can try?

I tried again, following your instructions exactly. It seemed to work, running normally for about an hour.
I left all the USB devices unplugged, except for the keyboard and mouse.
I then shut the iMac down, but left the mains power turned on at the wall. When I switched it on again 2 hours later, all was OK for 15 minutes, then the CPU fan ran at full speed.
Shutting down for a few seconds fixes it for another 15 minutes.
I'm wondering if it's a software problem, although I haven't loaded any apps recently, apart from a few monitoring programs since this problem appeared.
Last night I left it running the extended hardware test for a couple of hours, and the fans were fine.
One thing that I noticed yesterday was that the "GPU" temperature readings in iStat were all missing (just "-" displayed) for a couple of seconds when I clicked on Dashboard. Is there a way to keep iStat open while I'm using the iMac?
I think I'll try booting XP and see what happens.

Mail consumers all memory, seems to run fine, but makes fan run constantly.

Recently, Inoticed that my fan runs a lot lately and used Activity Monitor to see what was going on and sure enough, Mail is using 99% of my CPU... I have always left my Mail on and left it to check for incoming messages, but until about a week ago, the fan started to run and the computer would get warm. Before doing the Activity Monitor, I started shutting things down one at a time and noticed that shutting Mail down would do the trick. I am curious: why is Mail now after months starting to make my computer run at such high temps? Is it a mail storage thing? A Newtwork thing? Any suggestions? I have taken a sample of the program and I can't make heads or tails of it... I just see it takes up everything thanks in advance.

Yes, I have been doing the same thing, but I want to know what has changed. I have looked at the activity monitor and see that my activity skyrockets and it says it's cooking at 99%+ activity, and the fan kicks in, and then when I quit it, the whole thing goes back to normal... it seems to be this one app and nothing else...

Fan Runs constantly on MBP

Last week, Apple Store replaced my brand new MBP with this new MBP because of continuing problems with the first one. Now after a few days, the fans are running constantly as soon as I turn it on. Probably a sensor issue, although I don't want to take it back and have them start opening it up. I use iStat Widget. Fans run about 2000 rpm from the moment I start the computer up. Anybody else have this problem? Won't this drain the battery? Any solutions? Hardware or Software problem? I already reset the System Management Controller.
I suppose I will have to go back to the Apple Store, I was back and forth with the 1st MBP and now this problem. If they open the laptop up, it always seems to get worse and worse.

The system default is "fans on" at 2000 RPM. At that speed I cannot hear mine running unless I put my ear almost on the keyboard. Even smcFanControl (a third-party fan speed controller) will not let you set the speed below this point, leading me to assume that this airflow airflow volume is important. When the temps begin to rise, the fans speed up to move more air.
The highest temps I've seen on my Santa Rosa MBP are 160F/71C, and the fans are running at just under 5000 rpm (Max is 6000). As it cools down I can hear the fans start to slow around 140F/60C.
What I see in your description is normal behavior unless one or both fans are making screeching or loud whining noise.

Fans run at full speed sporadically

I know there's been a lot written about iMac G5 fans and I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it.
My iMac fans will occasionally speed up and run at high/full speed. Doesn't appear to be temp related (normally CPU runs 125-130F and CPU temp gets down to about 95F while fans running full) and fans return to normal following restart - this leads me to believe it's software related. I haven't done any software updates for a while (last was 10.4.3 upgrade). Logging out/in doesn't help, a restart is required.
Anyone else seen this? Any ideas?

I have had my iMac G5 since Dec. 2004. Never had a problem with fan noise until I finally installed Tiger and all the updates. I haven't yet tried any of the fixes suggested in these discussions as each one is different from the next and they will work for some users but not for others.
My fans do not rev up due to amount of time the computer is running. I too believe this is a software issue rather than temperature and something in one of the latest Tiger updates is the culprit or maybe the manner in which I installed them. I am up to ver. 10.4.4
I've been trying to note what I am doing on the computer when I hear the fans rev up. So far it seems that as soon as I log onto a web game that I am an administrator for, the fans rev up. This is a drawing game and highly dependent on Macromedia Shockwave.
Has anyone else noticed shockwave having an affect on the fans? Whatever is causing it, it is unacceptable! I am quite sure this is not a power supply issue as about a month ago, I had the logic board replaced due to the recall on my model and all was fine until I installed Tiger and the updates. BTW, I had no extra fan noise occuring due to the power supply issue.
Over the last few days, the revving fans have taken longer to get going than they did initially. The first time I logged onto that site, the fans revved up immediately and very loud. As I am typing this I have opened another browser and I am logged on to the game I mention above. The fan noise was not present for the entire hour and a half I've been on this computer and now since I logged onto the game site they are slowly getting louder.

MacBook Pro fans running high after 40C terperature

Hello, my MacBook Pro Late 2007 (3.1) when the tempetura exceeds 40C the fans go to 6000rpm and make lot noise.
* I've reseted the PRAM and SMC
* installed types of fan control, not work
* cleaned the fans
* Usage of the CPU is normal (on activity monitor)
Temperature CPU x RPM
Temp. RMP
30C ------- 3000Rpm
35C-------- 4700Rpm
40C ------- 6000Rpm
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I might be able to solve it?

You can't fix it if it's faulty. To determine whether that's the case, run the Apple Hardware Test, and if it reports any errors, take the machine in for service.

Fans running fast

OK. When I install the 10.5.8 combo updater and restart the Mac it closes down as far as the screen goes blank, but then the fans start running slow at first but after about 2 minuets they are running as fast as possible, should I leave them running? I have left them in the past for up to 2 hours but then I decided to push the button to force quit, just how long should I leave them running? And is this normal?

That is a retail upgrade to a new system; not a gratis update within one.
The ownership & use of a retail 10.5 Leopard DVD installer disc set is required.
A disc from another computer won't work in a different one, so that's out, too.

Sadly, the normal retail sources for buying a new/unused Leopard 10.5 disc
set won't have them; so other options and sources have to be examined or
researched. One possible source may be to call the main Apple phone number
for the sales support (see web page) at 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a Mac
OS X 10.5 specialist; and inquire about the purchase of the Leopard 10.5 full
install disc set, which is essentially the retail disc for a complete installation.

The best way to upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 is to have a separate hard disk drive
(if you have a tower computer) for it, all alone; no old Tiger or other OS X parts.
And if you use iLife, get a later version of that suitable for the hardware in your
computer; as not all older Macs can support the latest iLife. Some may prefer to
be using iLife 06 or 08, if they don't have all the newer stuff. Older ones may be
better with an even older version. Since iTunes is a separate download item, that
may also be too much for some ancient computers. Of course, newer iPads and
other items probably need to get into the iTunes store and interface with the Mac.
Those would require the minimums as indicated by their system requirements list.
If you are on the lookout ahead of time, getting a clean no longer in use Leopard
DVD retail installer disc may be a matter of timing and luck, in your vicinity. A few
weeks ago, a craigslist ad had some Apple OS X software including the 10.5 DVD,
in the box with book; an iLife 08 in box with instructions, Garageband jam-pack, a
white Apple usb keyboard, and iWorks 05 in the box with paperwork; all for $50.
And someone else, a few years ago, gave me an early retail Leopard 10.5 DVD.
So, I could easily upgrade one of my Macs (again) to Leopard 10.5.8 and have no
old Tiger system parts inside the computer at all. - A clean break, as I'd done before.
Be sure your computer has better than minimum hardware requirements to run
Leopard 10.5.8, including more than enough RAM, large capacity hard disk drive
with large cache and good read/write speed; and a good Superdrive optical drive.
If the issue with the 'fans running fast' has been resolved, or is conditional, you
could add whatever new info you have in this thread. And if you are considering
an upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8, issues outside of the actual computer hardware
seem to appear in the Leopard discussion page, if you needed to start a thread.
Sometimes, getting the dust and other debris out of a computer so it can breathe
and get adequate air-flow, can help it run cooler. But sometimes, there are other
possible reasons why, if it is running too warm, for it to be doing that. Do you have
and use a Temperature Monitor software that an be read in the main menu bar?
A temp widget is mostly pointless, since in order for that to work, you have to stop
most everything else & run DashBoard. That can further load the system, to make
it run warmer; if the issue of heat and fans remains an issue to be watchful over.
Hopefully a few of your questions or curiosities are finding answers; at times, a
fair gamble on information can be a google search. If worded adequately.

Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks. PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know. Thanks
