Headstart 6i - no client/server support?

Hello,
I have received today list of some new features of Headstart 6i (Beta supposed to be available this week).
In the new features list, here what it is wrote:
<<Because of known issues associated with running Forms 6i in a client-server environment, Headstart 6i will not be certified for client-server deployment. Applications can still be deployed client-server, but Headstart will not attempt to identify and overcome client-server specific issues.>>
Is someone have heard about these "known issues" in client/server?

The problems are GUI issues.
The basic problem is this:
Headstart can either be optimized to display in Webforms with the Oracle Look and Feel, or it can be optimized to display in client-server mode. You can't do both at the same time. Since we had to pick one or the other, we chose the Webforms OLAF GUI settings.
You can customize the template package to revert to the client-server GUI settings if you like. This basically involves changes to the visual attributes in the object library, removing the use of the keyword 'automatic' and setting actual colors for foreground color, background color and fill pattern.
There are also problems with displaying the menu and Smartbar. You should remove the icons that are displayed in the menu. If an entire menu group is disabled, the associated icons on the Smartbar disappear instead of greying out (no workaround).
There might also be other GUI issues. As stated, we have not tried to identify or resolve these issues.

Hi all, I don't know if this the right place to ask my question,here it goes.
I am looking to develop a client-server that supports multiple protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS etc. I am looking for a framework( i don't know if that is correct or I need some kind of web-service (soap etc)) that would manage connection, security etc. I would like to like to devote most of my time in developing business objects with multiple delivery mechanism such as sending serilized java objects, xml message or soap message, or in some case JMS message as well. So I need a client server that can come in via TCP/IP or HTTP or anyother industry standard protocol and I should be able to service him with pub/sub model and also request/response model as well.
I don't know if I had explained what I need, I would like to know what technologies I should be evaluating and which direction I should be heading... Also the server I'm developing should be free of Java constraints if needed...
Also this service is not webbased service as now but if need arises I should have a flexibilty to make them web enabled in future. Also I would like to work with open source webservers or appservers if I need

To change the border of the current client, you can use bn to use the normal border (including window title), bp to use a 1-pixel border (no window title) and bb to make the client borderless. There is also bt which will toggle the different border styles.
Examples:

or put in your config file

This worked for me today, as I had the same issue.
I had to set encryption to TLS to get it to work, and the server names as yahoo.co.uk...
In Outlook 2013, click File | Add Account.
Select Manual setup or additional server types.
Click Next.
Select POP.
Click Next.
On the “Account Settings” page, enter your account settings:
Your Name: The name you want to show when you send email.
Email address: Your full Yahoo email address.
Account Type: POP3
Incoming Mail Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
User Name: Your Yahoo ID.
Password: Your Yahoo account password.
Leave the “Require logon using Secure Password Authentication” option unchecked.
Click More Settings.
Click the Outgoing Server tab.
Select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication box.
Click Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
Click the Advanced tab. Enter advanced information:
Incoming server (POP3) port: 995
Select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
Outgoing server (SMTP) port: 465, 587, or 25
Set the encryption type to SSL or TLS
Set your desired server timeout and delivery options.
- We recommend leaving a copy of messages on the server.
Click OK.
Restart Outlook.
Click Send/Receive All Folders.
You can now retrieve emails from your Yahoo Mail account in Outlook 2013.

Headstart Designer 6i. Install into Production Environment as Client/Server

We are using designer 6i with headstart installed. We already have it installed in one 8i database running on an NT server but now we need to deploy it in a different 8i database. The associated documentation relates to a web server enviroment. Can you provide the steps or documentation to install this on a client server environment?

You're right.. You shouldn't ;-D But a good hack is hard to resist. Therefore, create the following view:
create or replace view my$version as select replace(banner,'Personal ') banner from sys.v_$version;
Now, create a synonym named v$version to this view.
The neatest way to do this is to create the view my$version view in your HST schema, and create a grant and a private synonym to this view in the schema's that you use to run the Forms:
create synonym v$version for <HST_OWNER>.my$version
But if you're bold enough you could also remove the existing public synonym v$version (which points to sys.v_$version), install the my$version view in the SYS schema and create a new public synonym:
create public synonym v$version for my$version;
And remember, you never heard this from me ;-D

Also tried with NoScript disabled. Doesn't work any better. You can actually see the youtube front page sometimes getting stuck in a half-formatted mode. Maybe it really is Google and it's just the error message that is wrong.

Headstart and Client/Server (C/S)

Hi 'Generators',
I have a question related to running Headstart generated Forms within a C/S environment. Is it possible to get a stable C/S environment?
I have checked the Headstart installation manual and there is a chapter "Using Headstart 6.5 in a Client/Server Environment". I have implemented the changes to the object library (where can i find "progress_indicator.amount" by the way???) but the forms are still not very stable in the client server mode. When i run the form in Oracle forms developer standalone there are no problems. When i run the form from the start form it crashes almost immediately. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLUUUPPPPPP!!!!! Have i missed an undocumented change to the object library????
If somebody was able to create a stable C/S environment!!! Please let me know!!!!

First of all, thanks for your information and your e-mail.
This is what i have tried at the beginning of this week. To see if text "automatic" was still in my forms i converted my forms from FMB to FMT format and did a search and replace on "automatic". For every text "automatic" found i have changed it to some kind of default color and then converted the forms back to FMB and then i have tried them to run again. The forms still crash. The strange thing is that they run correct within the FORM builder as stand-alone forms (open form in forms builder and then hit the traffic light to run the form). When i run them within the main form (start-form with menu's to call my forms) things start to go wrong. What is the difference? Is there something i forget? Can you tell me if there is someone out there who was able to get a stable environment at all?
Our plan to run the forms in a C/S environment using Citrix seems to be over when it is not possible to get it stable. We have to use the WEBFORMS environment instead and this means we have to invest in the Forms Server. Or are there other alternatives?

Client/Server to Web-Based application Conversion

Hi! Everyone,
I have couple of questions for you guys.
Our Client had recently upgraded Forms 4.5 to 6i to move from Client/Server based application to Web based application.
They are using Forms Server 6i Patch Set 1, OAS 4.0.8.1, Windows NT Service Pack 5 and Oracle 7.3. They are facing the following error every now and then, when they run the forms,
"FRM-92100: Your connection to the server was interrupted. This may be the result of a network error or a failure on the server.You will need to re-establish your session."
Please let me know what might be causing the above error. The only problem i can think about might be Oracle 7.3. If i am right only Oracle 8 and above supports Forms 6i.
Can anyone let me know some tips and/or techniques to upgrade Forms 4.5 to 6i. If there are any important settings/steps which we might have over looked during the upgrade, please list them.
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

Oracle9i Forms does not support client server - so you are running in a different environment (even though you may still only be onl two tiers).

VPN Site-to-Site or VPN Client Server with Cisco IP Phone 8941 and 8945

I decide to deploy a CUCM (BE6K platform), SX20, and IP Phone 8941/8945 on Head Office and Cisco SX10 and IP Phone 8941/8945 for branch offices (actually 9 branch offices).
The connection will use internet connection for HO and each branch offices.
And the IT guy want to use kind a VPN client server or VPN site-to-site for the connection through internet,
what kind of VPN client server or VPN site-to-site that recommended for this deployment?
and what type of Cisco router that support that kind of VPN (the cheapest one will be great)?
So the SX10 and IP Phone 8941/8945 in branch offices can work properly through internet connection?

Hi Leo,
technically, the ipsec users will not use up any premium license seats, so if you have 10 ipsec users connecting first, the premium seats are still free and so you can then still have 10 phones/anyconnect users connect.
However, the 250 you mention is the global platform limit, so it refers to the sum of premium and non-premium connections. Or in other words, you can have 240 ipsec users and 10 phones, but not 250 ipsec users and 10 phones.
If 250 ipsec users and 10 phones would try to connect, it would be first-in, first-served, e.g. you could have 248 ipsec users and 2 phones connected.
Note: since you have Essentials disabled I'm assuming you are referring to the legacy "Cisco vpnclient" (IKEv1 client) which does not require any license on the ASA. But for the benefit of others reading this thread: if you do have Anyconnect clients (using SSL or IPsec/IKEv2) for which you currently have an Essentials license, then note that the Essentials and Premium license cannot co-exist. So for e.g. 240 Anyconnect users and no phones, you can use Essentials. For 240 Anyconnect users and 10 phones, you need a 250-seat Premium license (and a vpn phone license).

I changed the name of the server and I have the same error. I changed the server name on: RfcServerManager.GetServer("SERVER_NAME", handlers); do I need to change in some other place?
Did you made any more changes on SAP or c#?
Anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem? I'm trying everything and I still could not solve...
Any help will be appreciated.

Client/server vs. Application Server

Our company has around 30 sites with each one having its own Oracle database server and file server (repository for executables of Forms6i/Reports6i). All the sites have the same applications running, i.e., the same set of programs are replicated to each site. At present we are running the applications in client/server mode (Forms6i/Reports6i runtime is installed on each client machine).
We are also using some third party modules developed in VB/VC++.
Now we are looking for the Centralized Solution, i.e., We want to have a Single Database Server available to all the sites all the sites are already linked with Network Leased lines).
Now we want to know the impact of running centralized file server (located at Corporate Office site) accessible from all the sites (through same client/server mode).
Will this solution work for us or we should move to 3-tier mode? Please suggest us the best feasible solution which can be implemented as early as possible.
What I mean to ask in the question above is: if a good intranet connectivity is available among sites, what would be the better approach, client/server or n-tier?
What actually would we gain by using application server in this context? Does the Data travelling is reduced from Database Server through to the Client Node in 3-tier AS approach? Does this 3-tier approach will reduce the Burden on Leased Lines? Does we gain more network resources available in 3-tier?
What I think is that in client/server mode, the data is travelled from Database Server to Client Machine, but using Application Server, the Data from Database Server will travel upto Application Server and NOT to the Cleint machine (on browser etc.), hence reducing Network Load.
Please clarify as your input makes a valuable role in our decision-making.

I'll take a stab at this one...
If you have enough network bandwidth, you should be fine funning in client/server mode. I have worked with clients with this same configuration. In addition to having a centralized DB, we have also centralized the forms on a network drive allowing users to access the same files and removing the need for users having to update their files locally. The biggest problem I see with this configuration, as long as you have enough band width, is that your configuration is not supported as 6i has been desupported.
From my perspective you really don't have any choice but to upgrade your application so that you can be supported. The good news is that for the clients we have worked with upgrades have gone very smoothly. In fact recently we have started to partner with another vendor that has a tool specifically designed to upgrade Oracle Forms and it includes additional features above and beyond what you get from Oracle. This tool has drastically reduced the amount of time to complete upgrades (like going from a 2 year project to just a few weeks).
I hate to answer this question because it is hard to answer without really getting into the details with you. The good news is once you do have a centralized DB and centralized application maintenance will be significantly easier.
One last option you might consider that our company has done is to use Citrix. I've never used it for Oracle Forms, but for other client/server applications it has allowed out clients to web enabled their existing applications without changing them at all and also get a boost in performance. I wouldn't recommend this approach to you because what you have should be short term until you get your forms/reports upgraded.

How can i get jdbc2.0 compatible driver for my oracle 8.1.5 client/server

I am looking for a driver that is jdbc2.0 compatible.Apaprently the oci and thin drvers that are shipped with oracle8.1.5 do no support scrollable and updateable resultsets. Can i download the oracle8.1.6 jdbc2.0 compatible drivers and use them with my oracle8.1.5 client/server. if so how do i install it?
Please let me know ASAP!!

Publishing .fla project including client - server socket connection

Hi,
I have designed with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 a .fla project that integrates a client - server connection.
After publishing it, I have the following issue:
- when running the generated .exe file for Windows, then the connection to the server works perfectly
- but when I am running the published .html file, then nothing is sent to the server.
I have tried to change the Publish Settings.
When setting the Local Playback Security in Flash menu to "Access network only" instead of "Access local files only" then the last packet that was send using the .exe file is resent once and that's all (the html client does not receive the response from the server and the next connection attemps generate data transfer).
I guess I have to change some security settings somewhere but I didn't find which.
Does anybody have a hint ?

I was finally able to solve the issue.
I did not get any error message when using firefox, but using iExplorer provided me this error:
"Local-with-filesystem SWF files are not permitted to use sockets"
Googling did then allow me to find the solution here:

The local locations on which I store my html page during the development has to be added to the trusted locations in the global security settings.

i have been using pjc for customized text field and text area and have successfully implemented it on windows and sun solaris. we have used pjc for working in non english character set so that the user can directly type in the required character set without any supporting application to enable new keyboard mapping. but i have a serious problem.
these customized components work only on the webforms mode.i.e. on browser or applet. they dont work in the normal client server mode. is it possible that i can have them running in the normal runtime also. if yes then how and if not what is the work around for achieving the same without much effort.

OLE Alternatives in Forms 6i Client Server

I'm fishing for some advice and maybe some examples of how to get around an OLE issue that's adversely affecting an upgrade project.
We're currently migrating a Forms 4.5 application to 6i. This application displays MS Word documents (OLE Container) that are stored in the database and uses OLE to open manipulate, and save the documents back to the database. We've come across some serious problems with OLE and 6i that don't look like they'll be fixed any time soon (bug #2615804 in particular).
Since OLE (ActiveX) is not supported a web delivered configuration, we're looking at an alternative to interacting and storing Word documents using a client/server configuration. This will have the added bonus of making the move to web delivery once we decide to go down that path.
Has anyone out there had any good experience with overcoming this OLE problem? It seems like every pre-Forms 9i book out there has touted OLE as a way of interacting with Office tools and now OLE has become a roadblock.
I've had a look at the JACOB example, but that doesn't really help if you're not deploying via the web.

With the importer it's more like leveraging java functionality : in my case I've just implemented a call to a webservice on an application server. There is nothing visual here and it's just called via a straight bit of PL/SQL that call my java classes ( however, in that case I could also use UTL_HTTP directly to make the call and thus not bother with java importer - but the database wouldn't allow UTL_HTTP calls :( )
For both of these you'd need to tell forms where to find the JAR file in it's java environment - but you won't have that in c/s
Another way is to load up java code into the database and process it within the database and hide it completely from Forms. I've done this sort of thing loading Apache-FOP into Oracle and creating PDF files in the database (as BLOBS) from XML/XSL also in the database as XMLTYPES.
At least that's my view on how it fits together ... maybe others know more :)
