Height of submenus

Hi.. I just want to change the height of the submenus only in my spry menu bar. I don't want the main menu bar height to change.Is that possible? Thank you!

Sure. In the CSS stylesheet for your menu, the styles work with the descendancy concept.
That is, earlier li styles in the sheet, like ul.MenuBarHorizontal li are more general and apply to all li in the menu.
To work with submenus, use the styles that are further down in the sheet, that begin with ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul li. If you apply a height in this selector, it will not affect the menu-items the next level up, but it will affect all submenus.
To further specify a different height for sub-submenus, add another layer of specificity: ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul ul li.
When you edit or add these style selectors to your stylesheet, be sure to add them AFTER the more general styles, or they will be cancelled out by the more general styles, which, as I mentioned, apply to any and all that match the spec.

  • Spry submenus overlap menu in Internet Explorer

    Hi, I'm working on a spry menu, and it looks exactly how i want it in Firefox, but in Explorer my submenus shift to the left and overlap my menu a lot.
    Also on my horizontal menu, the whole menu shows up shifted to the left and to the top in Explorer

  • Question: My spry menu bar is not displaying correctly in Dreamweaver

    Hello,
    I am  new to Dreamweaver CS5, so coding isn't my area of expertise. My problem with my spry menu bar is that it does not display the tabs on the menu bar correctly. When I try to apply new changes to the CSS of the horizontal menu bar, half of the tabs will change and the other half will not. Also, I am unable to drag and move the menu bar itself around, a function that I was once able to do before. At times, only one tab of the menu bar will display itself, without any of the other tabs as well.
    I have a hunch that my problems stem from some coding errors in the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css, and possibly in the SpryMenuBar.js. On the CSS Styles panel, my SpryMenuBarHorizontal.CSS list reads as follows:
    I also have a hunch that something about this line-up is also incorrect, but I don't exactly know what the problem is.
    Here is what my coding for my SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css looks like right now:

    SpryMenuBar.js
    This file handles the JavaScript for Spry Menu Bar.  You should have no need
    to edit this file.  Some highlights of the MenuBar object is that timers are
    used to keep submenus from showing up until the user has hovered over the parent
    menu item for some time, as well as a timer for when they leave a submenu to keep
    showing that submenu until the timer fires.

    If anyone could possibly steer me on the right direction with this, I'd be very grateful! I've been struggling with this for about a month now and I feel like I may have only made the situation worse.
    I'm not sure if I have to keep making a new spry assets folder in my website or not or if I have to drag and drop the spry assets into the root folder. I have restarted my website over at least a dozen times by now. I have tried changing folders, dragging and dropping various spry assets folders everywhere and I have also uninstalled and reinstalled my copy of Dreamweaver CS5 in the hopes of getting my spry horizontal menu bar to act normal. I am completely new at Dreamweaver and I really, really need some help with this.
    Thanks!

    I will be working on connecting my files up to my server. At the moment, here are some screen shots of some messages that I am getting when I am saving my file.
    I'm not sure what to make of these messages. I tried to put a new spry horizontal menu bar on my main page, and when it appeared, it displayed as a spry vertical menu bar.
    Here is a picture of what it looks like:
    I"m going to refer to the links that were suggested to me though. I'm not sure if pictures of the code will help to solve my problem. I'm going to try again to connect my files to my server though.

  • Spry menu bar not visible in live view

    Hi everyone,
    I was just working on the css for my spry menu bar and went to check it out in the live view, but it is no longer visible. I checked it out in Safari and Firefox to no avail. It looks totally fine in the design view in Dreamweaver. I'm new to web design and I have no idea what I did, but I'm really hoping someone here does! Below is the CSS.

    My guess is that you have a dark background in which case the menu items will not be seen.
    I suggest you have a look here first http://www.dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#one, then resurrect the original SpryMenuBarVertical.css and change as required.

  • Spry Menu Text only displays in hover color, doesn't sense browser edge

    I have a Spry horizontal menu in a website that is working fairly well in everything except IE6.  Firefox, Safari, and IE7 are all fine.
    In IE6, random menu items only display in the blue hover color, so they are invisible until you hover over them.
    My second problem is that the menu is right-aligned, and the button on the far right has three submenus.  I would like the second two submenus to automatically open to the left of the first submenu when opening to the right would cause them to be cut off by the edge of the browser window.  How do I do this??
    Here is my code (I've customized it with suggestions online, but just can't seem to fix the problem with IE6).
    Thanks for any help, I'm really stuck!!

  • Spry drop down menu not working when tested in ie7, does in FF and safari on mac

    Please help! I have a spry dropdown menu on a page, when tested in FF and Safari it works fine, but when tested in IE the menus don't drop down and the styling to the over state seems to be being ignored. I have attached the code and css below.
    As I am just on the build stage it is in a template, I have not made any editable regions on the template as yet, this should not matter should it? As is probably obvious already I am quite new to this! Please help!

    Complete page and css code below (scroll down)
    All you should be concerned with at this moment to get the background image to appear in the top level anchor is the css style below:
    /* Menu items that have a submenu have the class designation MenuBarItemSubmenu and are set to use a background image positioned on the far left (95%) and centered vertically (50%) */
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal a.MenuBarItemSubmenu
    background-color: #000;
    background-image: url(../rot.jpg);
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-position: left top;
    I've added the background-postion because presumably you want it to appear flush left. This overides the out-of-the-box setting which positions it 95% far left.

    Thanks,

    The code is too long. Let's do it this way, did you change anything on the default css of the SPRY menu?
    just my thought, why don't you remove it from the table? That might be the cause. Try to think of an alternative way like using divs and css.

  • Spry vertical menu bar size issue

    hello world,
    i've got a beautiful layout with a lefthand menu section that i would love to behave with pop-out menus.
    the entire design was crafted lovingly in fireworks and then exported as html with images, then opened in dreamweaver - looks great!
    remove the image that was in the slice where the menu will go, check.
    place cursor and select insert>spry>menu bar, select orientation, check.
    remove extraneous menu items in the properties inspector, check.
    and then, the problem...the box where "Item 1" (which will become my first button) is too big and shifts the entire table out of shape.
    i've edited the box sizes in the following CSS items:
    ul.MenuBarVertical
    ul.MenuBarVertical li
    ul.MenuBarVertical a
    sometimes i can get it close to it being in-shape with no shifting if i make the menu box smaller than the image that will go in it, looks great in DW but it is then shifted down by a considerable amount when previewing in browers. any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

    hi hans
    i can't upload at the moment, don't have the password to the site at the moment.
    for now the best i can do is post the CSS, and let you know that the size of the image i'd like to place in the parent spry menu is 168w x 32h (in px)

  • Spry Menubar not working in Fire Fox

    Hello gents, I am definitly a rookie when it comes to webpage
    design. I run my own fantasy football league and I just revamped my
    website a little. The site runs great in IE but is all out of sorts
    in Firefox.
    The URL is

    The CSS Coding looks like this:

    padding: 0;
    list-style-type: none;

  • Active menu moves left on mouseover in IE8

    I am trying to create a vertical dropdown menu. Naturally everything works fine in Firefox, Safri and Chrome. When I mouse over a tab that has submenues the colored bar jumps to the left.
    Second question: When I select a link in the sub-menu it opens in a new tab even thouse I have included target="self" in the URL. Any way to stop this?
    Site is at http://home.comcast.net/~kpickard/liloption/

  • Spry Menu Bar 1.7 Rendering Variable background height based presence/absense of sub-menus

    First, let me thank those who have offered help on previous posts on this issue -- the suggestions have pointed me in new directions.
    However I am still having problems with the first menu item on the top level of a horizontal menu bar which (because it has no sub-menu) renders the background differently from the other main level items.  I have implemented suggestions, as you will see, by setting a class for menu items with sub-menus as per the suggestion, and then proceeding working with line height to make specific changes within that class.  However any changes appeared universally through the menu bar at all levels.
    Working from that suggestion, I tried establishing a class of "menubarhorizontal_no-sub-menu" and then adjusted the line height for that item.  Unfortunately it applied this change again to all items leaving a displeasing white gap between menu items in the drop down menus.
    I wanted to put out a call once more.  I realize that the problem is in determining which of the rules to style, but I seem to have exhausted the possibilities.  The latest version can be seen at www.aclco.org/testing/index.html which will provide a visual of the problem.  You can see it doesn't look much different than the original which is http://www.aclco.org/index.html.
    I am also including the code for the nav bar which is inserted as a library item into all the pages:

    BROWSER HACKS: the hacks below should not be changed unless you are an expert
    /* HACK FOR IE: to make sure the sub menus show above form controls, we underlay each submenu with an iframe */
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal iframe
        position: absolute;
        z-index: 1010;
        filter:alpha(opacity:0.1);
    /* HACK FOR IE: to stabilize appearance of menu items; the slash in float is to keep IE 5.0 from parsing */
    @media screen, projection
        ul.MenuBarHorizontal li.MenuBarItemIE
            display: inline;
            f\loat: left;
            background: #FFF;
    Finally, there is minimal css coding to help position the menu bar within the web page relative to the top of the page, and left edge of the web page.
    This is done with a div tag called Main Nav Contents.
    #Main_nav_contents {
        padding: 0;
        margin-top: 0px;
        height: auto;
        width: 950px;
        padding-top: 275px;
        padding-left: 35px;
    I would very much appreciate any further help that people can provide me.  It seems that the trick is to identify the appropriate rule; however that has thus far alluded me.
    Thanks,
    Steve Webster
