It should still be compatible. Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port using a different cable to see if that helps? Perhaps, try it another computer as well to see if it's recognized there.
Otherwise, start by checking to see if it's even recognized in Device Manager. See this article for details.

"Other" is the measure of used space on the iPod not taken up by Audio, Video & Photos. This includes the iPod's library and artwork plus any files you may have copied to your iPod in disk mode. The overhead for the library & artwork data is typically 1-2% of the size of the media, e.g. for 1Gb of Audio & Video expect to have around 15mb of "Other". This information is needed for the iPod's operation and cannot be removed.
If you have significantly larger amounts of "Other", not related to files you've intentionally placed on the iPod, then these are probably disconnected copies of your media files or iPod libraries left over from failed sync operations. The only way to recover the space is to do a full restore.
If you have copies of all your media in your iTunes library this isn't a problem, but if you've been manually managing the content then you might need to try to recover the files from it first. See this post by forum regular Zevoneer on transferring files from the iPod to your computer. Some of the tools rely on the iPod having a healthy library however the manual method mentioned towards the end of the post should work regardless.

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

Can anyone please help! I haven't been able to connect to the iTunes store to purchase music for some time now. Ever since yesterday, my Ipod apps won't open properly. I googled it, and couldn't find anything accurate. So i deleted all of the apps, and re-downloaded them. Now they're doing it again. When i tap on it, it looks like it wants to open, but then it goes back to the main menu. I googled it again, and got an answer saying to go to Itunes, uncheck the "sync apps" box, and sync. Then after that, recheck the box, and sync again. Many people said this worked, but it didn't for me. Also whenI go to sync my apps, they don't show up in Itunes. How do I get them to show up in Itunes?
I had the same issue. After searching around online I found out that you can try downloading another app (it can be any app) onto your ipod. After it finishes downloading see if your other apps open. You don't even have to keep the new app. Just see if your other ones work and you can delete the new one. That should work. If not, try to hard reset it. I'm using a new computer. All my music is on an external hard drive and I want it to stay there. Before installing iTunes on the new computer, I followed turingtest2's instructions as to the layout of all the iTunes folders (Itunes folder, Itunes Media, Music, etc...). I also followed his instructions as to get all my music in iTunes on the new computer (but keeping all the media on the external drive). Now my songs are all duplicated in my library (I normally have about 15,000 of them). They all play when I click onto them. Also, I've lost all my playlists, and all the songs in the library are now ticked. I've already spent hours trying to sort this out, but can't seem to find a solution. Help please!

Thank you for replying. I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive. A bit of background info. My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work. I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music). I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me. However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders. Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder. The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder. I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel. I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify: I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked. However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.

Just got Airport Express to save on GBs of data. I have already a Westell 6100G which is for use as Internet Broadband, via Verizon. How do I set up the Airport Express with this Westell. Do I even still need the Westell, or do I need to also buy a wireless router? I'm a tech idiot and this is driving me nuts.
The Westell 6100G is a combination modem and router or gateway device. The AirPort Express is a wireless router.
Since the Express does not have a built-in modem, you will still need your Westell gateway in order to access the Internet.
Which exact model of AirPort Express do you have. It will be written (in very hard to read type on a label on one of the AirPort's sides). It should look something like: A1392. It may also state a Order#. In that case it would look something like: MC414LL/A
Regardless of which model you have, the basic network configuration would be that you would connect an Ethernet cable between the Westell's Ethernet port and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the Express. (Note: If you have an earlier model of the Express, you would connect the cable to the only Ethernet port on the Express.)
The good news is that you will not have to make any configuration changes to the Westell. We should be able to use it as configured.
What we are going to start with is getting a basic Wi-Fi network that should provide your computer with wireless access to the Internet. Once verified as working, we can fine-tune this network to include wireless security and any other goals that you may have.
Ready to start?
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the Westell and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
Once the reset has completed, remove the AirPort Express from power.
Connect an Ethernet cable between the Westell and the AirPort Express.
Power-up the Westell; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results. -
I am having trouble getting my macbook to connect to my tv. When I connect my mac to the tv via VGA I have no problem. It detects it right away. I just purchased a HDMI cable because I didn't want to have to use speakers when connect to my TV and it will not detect the computer. The HDMI is a good cable because it connects our apple tv to the tv, so I know it works.
When I connect the HDMI cable to the tv and my computer, the screen on my tv flickers once and it seems like it is connected. It then flickers one more time about 5 seconds after like it disconnects.
When I use my VGA it gives me an arrangement tab in the displays, I do not get that when I plug my HDMI in. I get nothing. Is there something else I could do?Never mind, I solved it. Didn't know the converter needed a power source to operate (duh!) Now I have that, it works just fine.......

I have the newest version of Firefox 15.01 and I wanted to add some add-ons but they won't open up.
I have firefox 15.0.1 and my addons won't load. I wanted to add something new and all it does is keep working like it's busy trying to open or load them but nothing happens. It's been like that for over 4 days. I can't add any new add ons at all. What's going on?? I

I had this problem over a year ago, and someone at RIM found a bit set that shouldn't have been set and fixed it (that is my terminology for what happened).
I am really looking for a way to contact RIM directly. I hate going through the mill with my carrier to get it escalated to RIM for resolution...... <sigh>

So, I have had an Ipod touch (fourth generation) for a little less than a year now, and I have never had any problems with it until the latest version of itunes came out. Now, my ipod never can sync (I left it up for an hour before and it only got to step 2 out of 7), and I can't add any more music to my ipod! To make it worse, about 100 songs that I had deleted off my ipod, but could still be found in my itunes library, appeared again on my ipod! But, they are grayed out and I can't listen to them so they just take up space.
