Hello. I recently installed a new SSD on my macbook pro (mid2009 running mavericks). Now after booting up the text editor automatically pops up on the desktop with the header quopri_codec.py What is this and should i be concerned about it?

here's the script in full:
"""Codec for quoted-printable encoding.
Like base64 and rot13, this returns Python strings, not Unicode.
import codecs, quopri
try:
    from cStringIO import StringIO
except ImportError:
    from StringIO import StringIO
def quopri_encode(input, errors='strict'):
    """Encode the input, returning a tuple (output object, length consumed).
    errors defines the error handling to apply. It defaults to
    'strict' handling which is the only currently supported
    error handling for this codec.
    assert errors == 'strict'
    f = StringIO(input)
    g = StringIO()
    quopri.encode(f, g, 1)
    output = g.getvalue()
    return (output, len(input))
def quopri_decode(input, errors='strict'):
    """Decode the input, returning a tuple (output object, length consumed).

    f = StringIO(input)
    g = StringIO()
    quopri.decode(f, g)
    output = g.getvalue()
    return (output, len(input))
class Codec(codecs.Codec):
    def encode(self, input,errors='strict'):
        return quopri_encode(input,errors)
    def decode(self, input,errors='strict'):
        return quopri_decode(input,errors)
class IncrementalEncoder(codecs.IncrementalEncoder):
    def encode(self, input, final=False):
        return quopri_encode(input, self.errors)[0]
class IncrementalDecoder(codecs.IncrementalDecoder):
    def decode(self, input, final=False):
        return quopri_decode(input, self.errors)[0]
class StreamWriter(Codec, codecs.StreamWriter):

class StreamReader(Codec,codecs.StreamReader):

Thanks for the info. I'm not really sure how or why this python script is running when my macbook starts up. Any ideas how i can locate the script and stop it from running?

    Mike, thanks for turning me onto that Apple Support article.  My aging MacBook has been a good computer.  Recently it has had a few problems which required me to erase and restore everything.  I suppose I'm trying to treat it gently by doing more frequent maintenance on the disk health.  I thought doing an occasional repair permissions was in keeping with a more active preventative maintenance attitude. This way of thinking may be completely wrong on my part. If you could suggest other ways to promote healthy MacBook aging I'm all ears. I think I know one way is to try to use only up to 75% of it's memory capacity, but currently I'm at about 90%.

    The Color Sync Utility is part of OSX and usually resides in the Application/Utilities folder.
    Don't know how it appeared on your desktop.
    But it is no malware, spyware or the like but as said part of OSX.

    My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

    I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
    In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
    Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

    When I connect my Macbook Pro to my Dell DLP projector, either via cable or wirelessly, I just see a dark screen with the mouse and mouse trails only, can any one help?

    jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
    Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
    Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
    Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
    Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
    Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.

  • Installed a new harddrive in my macbook pro. cannot connect to hp photosmart all in one printer!!

    I, recently, installed a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro Laptop Computer (2007 model).
    Now, I cannot print out anything on my HP Photosmart  C7180 All-In-One Printer! They don't
    seem to be connected, as the printer icon shows up on my computer,  and then, immediately, evaporates
    into thin air.
    How do I connect my HP Printer to my laptop, now that I have a new harddrive installed?

    Hello Lady22:
             When you received your printer you should have received two insulation disks one is for Windows computers and the other one is for Mac ( Apple Computer) If you have the disks please install Mac disk.  Apple computers do search and down load the parcel software so you can do basic printing commands. You need to find the program that is some where in your computer that allows you to hook up Pinters and Devices. Ounce you find this open it up then connect the printer cable to the lap top. The computer program will list HP's printers yuo need to select your printers model number. Then it will down load the drivers for it to run basic commands. Ounce they are download run a test to make sure it is working right. Contact HP's store and asked them to send you a new set of insulation disk. Your old disk may have fine dust film on them. Clean them off pior to inserting them If you use glass cleaner and fine cloth make sure they are dry off before you insert them. If you used them before maybe a speck of dirt blocked out parcel program that caused it not to install correctly . frrw

  • New Retina MacBook Pro does not find WiFi after booting

    My Retina MacBook Pro keeps looking for WiFis after it has booted, but does not find any.
    I have to explicitly turn WiFi off and on again after booting to get it working.
    When I put the MacBook to sleep and wake it, the problem does not occur.
    Any hints what could be the problem?

    Not sure if this will help, but you can go into System Preferences > Network and, if you haven't already, create a new location (mine is called "home"), then from this location remove all connection methods from the left column except Wi-Fi. Also, click on "Advanced" and remove anything from the Preferred Networks list that you aren't using. Then click on "OK" and "Apply".

  • I recently installed a new SSD and installed Mountain Lion on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and now it randomly crashes sometimes upon waking from sleep.  What's wrong?

    I have no clue how to diagnose this problem.  I've run disk repair but nothing seems to work.

Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • After clicking "close" X, a message appears then disappears too quickly to read. It begins "Firefox will close now..." The word "security" appears in the next line. What is the rest of this message and should I be concerned about "security"?

    none further

    The full message that was almost impossible for me to read was: “'''Firefox will close now. Please standby while BetterPrivacy checks your hard disk for LSO cookies…'''”
    To see if your message is the same or different:
    1. Open Firefox
    2. Press and hold the Shift key with your left hand
    3. Close Firefox
    4. Then, as soon as the message appears, press the Print Screen key with your right hand
    5. Open the Microsoft Paint program, go to the Edit Menu and press Paste
    6. A box with the full message should appear. If not, continue to open and close Firefox and hit Shift/Print Screen until you time it just right and the message will appear when you paste it into Paint
    There would not appear to be any security concerns with the message posted above
    There may be security concerns if your message is different.

  • Installing new SSD into older MacBook Pro and Organization Questions!!?

    Hello,
    I am about to pull the trigger on a new Samsung 840 Pro 512gb ssd for my older Macbook Pro 5,3 with 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo.
    I need some advice or at least point me in the direction of where I can read up to date info on properly executing the install of my new ssd.
    A little background:
    I have a Seagate 500gb external hdd that has many older pictures/videos on it as well as my "just about full" 320gb hdd on this computer that will be getting the 512ssd.
    Any comments/suggestions a to how I can organize all of this and have it in one accessable place? (I was planning on installing the 512ssd on this computer, putting everything on the 512ssd and then wiping the external drive and using it as a backup periodically in case something went wrong with the new ssd I would be installing on this computer.  Follow me? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
    I've been telling my wife that we NEED to replace this drive before we lose many of our important pictures and other items on it.  We have used 319gb of which 45gb is still available.  I am nervous as this hdd is about 6-7 years old?
    The pictures/videos are the most important to us and do not want to lose them.  Thanks, in advance, for your help!

    How to use an SSD with your HDD
    If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
    After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
    Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
    You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed.
    When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
    Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
    Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

  • I was installing a new update on my MacBook Pro. With only 20% left it said "an unknown error had occured, please restart your computer." Now that I've restarted - I can't log in!

    Ok, my MacBook haven't had any issues earlier, until today. At first Safari was acting kind of weird in that sense that a lot of letters were missing when you went on certain webpages, so I thought of updating since an alert-window popped up and notified that new updates were ready to be installed. So I opened up App Store through my Applications-folder and selected update.
    First it asked if I wanted to connect my Mac to a powersource but since I had charged the battery to 79% I didn't think it was necessary. So I continued, computer restarted and began installing the updates.
    Everything went fine until it was approximately three minutes left. An error message popped up and said something like "An unknown error has occured. Please restart your computer and try again". I pressed OK, rebooted my computer and when it asked for my password I typed it in. After I pressed OK, the computer indicated it was the wrong password. I tried multiple times and sometimes with different passwords... so now I can't simply log in! What's the problem?
    TL;DR - Updated mac, failed after five minutes and now I can't log back in since "I have the wrong password"

  • New SSD in my macbook pro seems slow

    Hi,
    I would like to know if it's normal, as I don'T find the results on Xbench and Blackmagic satisfying.
    I just upgraded my macbook pro 13" mid 2010 2.66ghz dual-core, 8gb ram with a OWC mercury electra 6G 120gb SSD. I swaped my optical drive for my old HDD WD 500gb and I connected my SSD to the SATA (both are pluged on SATAII 3gb). I did a clean install of maverick onto the SSD and I installed most of my apps like aperture and FCPX on it to benefit from the speed.
    Here is the last Xbench test :
    I resetted the SMC and the pRAM, but I get the same results.
    I find them pretty low compared to the advertised results even though I am on SATAII...
    Do you find this normal?

    Thank you clintonfrombirmingham, I contacted OWC through their Live chat technical support. The technician sent me a copy of Quick Bench to run my tests and it seems to be a lot more accurate. Here are the results :
