Help adding wireless printer in Solaris 9

I have a home network with a wireless PC and wireless Mac, and an Ethernet connected Ultra running SPARC OS 9. Bought a new HP Photosmart C7280 printer, which supports wireless connection. Easy enough to connect the PC and Mac. How about the Ultra?
Poking around, found this cmd:
# lpadmin -p hp -v /dev/null -m netstandard -o dest=+ipaddr+:9100 -o protocol=tcp
Subsituting my printer's ipaddr and running the cmd as root gave this error:
lpadmin: add-printer (set device) failed: client-error-not-possible
From the Ultra, I can ping the printer and telnet to it (and get it to accept input which prints). Any help appreciated.

Solution is to use CUPS:

Works great.

  • Wireless printer on Solaris 10 X86

    Hi All,
I don't have any experience with printers in Solaris at all, so I'm not sure where to start.
I would like to get my Brother MFC 640cw printer to be seen from my laptop. The printer is connected to my wireless router and has a static ip address. My laptop is a dual boot with Windows XP and Solaris 10 10/8. The printer works fine wirelessly from the Windows side. I'm not sure what I need to do to get it working on the Solaris side. The Brother support site does not have Solaris packages for this printer, but I do see that they have some for Mac OSX and some Linux distributions. Is there a way to get my laptop to print on the Solaris side?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bob

Thanks for the reply Marco. I'm not sure what you mean by adding the printer manually. I tried using printmgr (which looks like it actually uses lpadmin in the background) and I keep getting an error message "lpadmin: Unknown option 's'!"
When I select show command line console, this is the line that errors out.
    % /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p BRN_AFC819 -s malibu -v /dev/null -m netstandard -T PS -A write -o dest=192.168.5.4 -o protocol=bsd -o banner=always -I postscript -u allow:all
    lpadmin: Unknown option 's'!
Not sure where to go from here.

  • Need Help Adding Network Printer

I am trying to add a network printer on a Solaris (Sun OS 5.6) system. I am doing this using lpadmin as outlined in volume 2 of the system admin guide.
The printer appears on the system, but when I try sending a print job, I get the message 'Segmentation error - core dumped' and nothing prints on the printer.
I have added the printer to the etc/hosts and can ping it o.k.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

There is info missing from your post that I like to have when considering these issues, so here is what I'm assuming:
    You used the command:
    lpadmin -p printername -v /dev/null -m netstandard -o dest=printerhostname -I contentype -T printertype
(note: I like -m netstandard instead of
-i /usr/lib/lp/model/netstandard because I'm lazy! they mean and do the same.)
You have the latest version of patch 106235 for lp, which I believe is -09
This is perhaps not the first printer or first attempt at adding a printer on this host.
Possibly this machine was upgraded from a previous version of Solaris?
If you can find the core file (it may be where you issue the lp command or in the /var/spool/lp/tmp directory), you can use the adb command to at least extract the name of the binary that is coring:
    adb core
This could be several things that could require anything from a spool clean to an remove and reinstall of the print packages. Any more details you can provide? Perhaps the output of lpstat -p printername -l? Does this happen with any printer you create?

  • Help Adding a Printer!

I got an HP deskjet 3054 printer as part of Apple's program and I set it all up, but I cannot add it.
I go into print and scan within system preferences, press add a printer, click on my printer, and we're all good. But then a pop up comes up saying Apple must look for a software update for the printer to be used. It looks for an update, finds it, downloads it, then installs it, and an error comes up saying my software is not available at the time.
I've tried installing the software from HP (for OSX Lion) multiple times and from Apple too. But every time the same process happens that I have described before. I add the printer via USB. My friend has the same macbook pro and can add the printer fine so I know it's the computers fault.
If anyone can help me that'd be totally awesome. Thanks

I've done that too before like I already said.
I finished installation of the drivers. As you can see.
I follow the instructions and try to add the printer
And instead of adding the printer it does this. Even though I just installed the software
    And installs again?

  • I need help adding my printer to my home wireless network

My printer was shut down for several months. When i turned it on it was not longer connected to my wireless network. It recognizes my SSID and that of other wireless networks in the area. But I cannot get it connected to my home wireless network.
When I enter my passphrase it returns error "passphrase invalid." If I use the Push Button or PIN set-up I get the error message "WPS timed out."
I have followed the instructions useing the HP Printer set-up disc. It worked on one computer today (it printed a wireless network test report). But, then I could not find the printer on the network later. I also noticed the report does not show a IP address for the printer.
I have also been online with my internet provider and we changed my passphrase 11 times and the printer never recognized any of them. I am operating another printer wirelessly on the same system. By the way, shutting the other printer down did not seem to work. But, they both worked on the network previously.I have also added and deleted the printer several times.
The printer I am trying to add is a HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n-s
I am using a Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32 bit on the other computers on my home wireless network,

  • Please help with wireless printing

I am running a wireless network in the house and having trouble printing. The printer (Canon MP800) is connected via USB to my Windows XP desktop. The desktop is connected via Ethernet to a 2Wire DSL modem that broadcasts the wireless signal to my Powerbook G4 running OSX (10.4.10). I can’t get the powerbook to print, though.
I have followed the instructions at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3015.html up to the point where it says:
“Select the printer but do not click Add as you need to change the Printer Model.”
    “Under Printer Model select HP.”
I assume that since I am using a Canon that I should look for Canon instead of HP. The only options I get are
    Generic
    Other
    Apple
    ESP
“Generic” is a selection all by itself
“Other” opens up a finder dialog box that allows me to choose a file on my harddrive, but I have no idea where to go.
“Apple” opens a pulldown menu that allows me to select from a list of Apple printers.
“ESP” opens a pulldown menu that allows me to select from a list of other printers. This list includes Epson, HP, etc. but does not include any Canon printers.
I selected the “Generic” option. When I try to print from the powerbook, I have noticed that the printer queue on my Windows XP desktop shows a document entitled “Remote Downlevel Document.” The printer queue spools up with this document, it appears to go through the cycle and then disappear (as a normal print document does), but nothing happens on the printer.
The desktop will print normally. The powerbook will print normally when I connect the printer to it via the USB cable but another printer is created in the Printer List. This printer is named MP800 and is kind: Canon MP800 whereas the first attempt (wirelessly) names it Canon MP8 and is kind: Generic Postscript Printer.
In troubleshooting I have attempted to remove and reload the printer from both the powerbook and the desktop independently to no avail. I have even temporarily removed the firewall (Norton 360) from the desktop to make sure that wasn’t it.
I Googled the term “Remote Downlevel Document” and discovered that it was associated with a virus that affects print servers. I updated my Norton anti-virus and did a full system scan which came up clean. Some of the Google results also suggested that there might be clutter in one of the printer folders in Windows. I should remove any .tmp files I find there, but when I followed the path, there were no such files in that folder.
I apologize for the length but I wanted to make sure I had a full and accurate account in case someone might be able to point me in the next appropriate direction. Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.
I am cross posting this question on the macbookpro yahoo group, the applemac yahoo group and the apple discussion page.

still looking for some help on this intriguing matter... if anyone can help out, i'd really appreciate it! thanks.

I have a Samsung ML-1710 printer which we use with both an iMac and an iBook. When the iMac needs the printer, we connect the printer's USB cable to the iMac. When the iBook needs the printer, we connect the printer's USB cable to the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Both the computers use the AEBS - the iMac is connected via ethernet (DSL modem) and the iBook connects to the AEBS wireless network.
The small annoyance of having to change the USB cable aside, there is a bigger problem. After every time the printer is used by the iMac, printing does not go through on the iBook. The only solution I've found is to restart the AEBS (through AirPort Admin Utility). As this interrupts the wireless network, it is a major annoyance.
I do not want to spend $ on an Airport card for the iMac at this point...
Is there any way to correct this? Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Adding a printer - To save to a file rather than Print Output

    Hi,
Does anyone know a way of adding a printer to Solaris, that when a job is sent to it, rather than print it, it creates a txt/pdf file?
If so can you advise on how to do it?

  • Sharing windows hp printer with solaris

    hi
I have hp laser jet P1102 printer which i want to share with solaris. I have added the printer in solaris using lpadmin but i am not able to print to this printer.
I have another printer which is laserjet 1320 which is added to solaris box in the same way and i am able to print without any issues.
i would like to know if there is any step to know if a printer would print successfully from unix.
    looking forward to your support.

thank you very much for your reply
so when i buy a new printer i how do i know it will be able to print from solaris. By comparing the above two printers i can see that one printer is Postscript enabled which is actually printing from solaris. So if i buy a printer that supports posscript will it print properly?
please correct me if my understanding is wrong becuase we need to buy a printer which will print from solaris.

  • Wireless printing works with 10.5.1 but not with 10.5.8 - help?

    TIA
In 10.5.1 adding my HP printer and printing wirelessly to it was no problem. I upgraded with the Combo 10.5.8, used the printer set up procedure and my printer does not show up in the printer window.
I now wireless print to my HP printer by booting up in 10.4.11. I.O.W., it is not my HP printer.
I have searched the net for similar problems and did not find any. I have downloaded and installed, again, the HP drivers.
In 10.5.8, I can see and select the Adobe PDF printer and, in the printer setup window, I can select my HP printer driver (I.O.W., the driver is installed). The Adobe PDF printer works.

    Hi Leonard,
Your printer is indeed connected via Ethernet and your wireless router provides the wireless capabilities to your MacBook Pro. (That is, your printer is NOT a wireless printer.) This is exactly how my network is setup as I stated in my post on February 26.
    Here what I suggest...
Print a test page from the HP 4MV printer as follows:
    (a) Press the On Line button so the light goes out
    (b) Press the Menu button until the display shows TEST MENU
    (c) Pres the Item button until the display shows SELF TEST
    (d) Press the Enter button. The display will show 06 PRINTING TEST and after 30 seconds, the test page prints
The test page will show a boxed section. The third column is TCP/IP information and should show the printer's IP Address (ex. 192.168.1.xxx), subnet mask (255.255.255.0), and gateway (ex. 192.168.1.1). The gateway should be that of your router and the first three sets of numbers of the printer's IP address are the same as the router.
Now, put the printer back On Line.
Add printer using IP with the LPD protocol (This is for Leopard but should be similar with Snow Leopard)
Launch System Preferences and click on Print & Fax
    Click the plus ( + ) symbol
    Click IP
Protocol: select Line Printer Daemon – LPD (click for a pop-down list of options)
Address: type in the IP address shown on the printer self test page
Queue: you can leave it blank
Now, the system will look for the IP and find a corresponding match PPD
If everything is correct, click the Add button.
(In my case, "Name" automatically fills with the IP address that I input for address and "Printing Using" auto finds a PPD for my printer. I also have an additional setup for my HP 4MV using a third-party PPD and in that case, I manually "Select a driver to use” by clicking on whatever the system automatically selected.)
BTW: You may want to take a look at what print guru, Greg Sahli says in another thread at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2117938&tstart=0
    Hope this helps.

  • Using a wireless print server... help!

Hi. I have a G5 on a wireless network using a LinkSys WRT-54G router. I just got a wireless print server (D-Link DPR-1260) and want to network my HP 6110xi All-in-one printer. 6110 drivers are installed, and printer previously worked fine when connected directly to computer via USB port.
Now, I want to share it over the wireless network. I believe I have the print server correctly configured... just not sure how to configure my G5 to print across the network to this printer. How do I set it up?
    Particulars:
    - LinkSys WRT-54G, 802.11g wireless router, firmware v4.20.7 (192.168.0.1)

    - iMac G5, (192.168.0.100, dynamic IP)

You have 2 computers respectively connected each to a printer.

    PC1 = Printer1 (USB) (Win)
    PC2 =Printer2 (USB) (iMac)

The iMac has built-in Bonjour technology. So use that. If your windows PC has XP you can download Bonjour for that one as well and use that to share your printer.
What you can do is use the Airport Express and connect it to a USB printer. Make sure that it is compatible printer.
