Help! CD drive reads Dvd's cd-rw's burns cd-rw's can't read/ write cdr's

Hi all,, I have a strange problem. My ibook can read dvd's, read and burn cd-rw's, read audio cd's and store bought cd-roms, but it cannot read or write blank or burned cdr's. I've reset the pram, and reinstalled the OS but nothing. Once I put a disc in it cycles on as normal then ejects the cd after about 30 seconds.. Any idea's what else I could do?
Thanks!

i would say this was a software problem, rather than some kind of incompatibility thing. As a test, you could create a new user account, when you put a CD-R in on this new account it would give you the option of opening the CD in the finder or in itunes, if you choose itunes it should work fine, however if you open it in the finder it will eject the same way.
When i had this problem i archive-reinstalled OS-X, that replaces your system folders and the like, but keeps all your documents and settings, so if you can be bothered that would fix your problem. I'm wondering, however, if it could be fixed by deleting some system files, possible something in root/library/preferences although i wouldn't know what to look for in their.
hope i've been some help. Matt.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

  • G710 hard drive read/write speed

    Hello,
    I have a brand new Ideapad G710  with 1TB Serial ATA 2, 5400rpm with advertised speed of 3 Gb/s (= 384MB/s).
    I am running Windows 7 ultimate x64 with SP1.
When I test hard drive read/write speed (I used CrystalDiskMark) I get results of about 100MB/s, which is 3-4 times slower than it should be.
I am not running any resource heavy applications (Resource monitor reports Disk I/O to be 0 most of the time in idle state). I have 3 partitions, each with 16-32GB paging file size and all are >90% empty. All partitions have been defragmented before testing.
Is this normal? Are there any lenovo drivers or utilities than I might be missing or that can slow/speed this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    hi Daew,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The results that you got while running CrystalDiskMark is normal. The SATA 2 (3Gb/s) that you mentioned is actually the SATA interface support, not the actual read/write performance.
If you have a Seagate HDD (eg. ST10000LM024), check these specs
From the above specs, the unit has a cache that has a read/write max speed of 145 MB/s but there are environmental factors and power requirements to get this speed (eg. read/write speed on AC power is differente from battery power).
AFAIK, if this is the specs that is design for this drive, there's no way to speed it up.
If you're planning to upgrade in the future though, you can get an SSD for faster read/write.

Hi, my ipad 2 just got the same problem and after reading all relative post, finnally i figrue it out, that is no software issue at alll just hardware,
I did attemp replace the power button cable on my ipad so i must disconnect the back camera cable so there is my problem. Because the connect some how not exact in place, i took the camera out and the issue is gone. So, in your case, if you did try to replace anything look at them again or you just take them out one by one and reboot ipad until it work.

  • DVD/CD drive read/writes DVD, reads CD, but suddenly fails to recognize CDr

I'm having a problem that I just don't understand, and I can't seem to find any information on, so I'm hoping somebody out there has some thoughts.
I have a powerbook 17 with the DVD/CD listed below (from system profiler).
This drive has always worked perfectly, but now I find that I can:
    - play DVDs
    - burn DVDs
    - play/read CD
but when I insert a CDr to burn, the icon never shows up on the desktop. Running disk utility lists it as a CD (read only) -- I'm not sure if disk utility is valid in this context or not, but I had to start it so that I could get at the CD to eject it.
At first I thought it might be the media I was using, but I tried two different kinds -- both failed, then I found some blanks of the brand and type that I've been using forever...failure.
So, can this be a hardware error? If so, how can a hardware drive error only affect recognizing writeable CDs? If this is the case, I'd like to learn something! =:-)
The only thing that's changed on this system is that I regularly run software updtate...everything's up to date. This is OSX 10.3.9.
    Thanks,
    keith

  • Urgent!!! Need help in file read/write data to a serial port

    Hi,
I really need someone's help in order for me to complete my project. I have attached a vi which I have taken from an example and integrate to my project. In the vi, I have managed to get the encoder counts using Ni 9411. I need to read/write that data from ni9411 to ni9870 without using any serial port as they are connected to a NI 9104 chasis. May I know whether I am correct in writing the data to my ni9870 port using the vi I have attached? Does anyone know how i can convert the number of counts to a 8-bit data/byte so that I can send the data through the RS232 port? I really need someone's help as I need to finished in 2 weeks time.
I have also attached an vi on controlling the epos2 controller using instrument driver. Does anyone know how can i integrate this vi to the fpga vi (the one which I need to read/write data to 9870) as I need to send those data to control my epos2 controller.
    Please help me!!!

    Afai,
As I allready suggested you here, call your local NI Office and ask for assistance!
You really need assistence in a higher level that we can provide via the forums. Otherwise I don't see a chance for you to finish your project in time.
    1. Convert I32 to U8 to write it to the 9870 could be done like this:
    2. The vi to control the epos2.
There is NO way ( absolutely NO way) to port this vi to FPGA. It's based on VISA calls, uses an event-structure, both are not available at the FPGA.
The only thing you could do is to analyze the VI, the instruction set and design an FPGA vi which handles the specific instructions you would need.
I have no experience with epos2 and I'm not 100% sure if this would work as you would like to use it. And doing this needs deep knowledge of LabVIEW, VISA, Instrument Drivers, the epos hardware, FPGA programming, and so on...

  • Make external hard drive read/write

Not quite sure if there is in the right section but oh well.
    Here's the story:
SeaGate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive (1.5TB) (THE FOLLOWING INFO WAS TAKEN FROM ITS APPLICATION: ("SEAGATE DRIVE SETTINGS")
    Drive Info
    Model: FA GoFlex Desk
    Firmware: 0D19
    Volume Info
    Format: Windows NT Filesystem
    Capacity: 1397.26 GB
    Available: 1224.35 GB
    Used: 172.91 GB
    Mount point: /Volumes/FreeAgent GoFlex Drive
So it seems to slow down my iMac (10.6.8), 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1.5GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (memory) (1st Generation 17 inch) a fair bit. Could this be because of the Format? I have no idea why it says that. When I first installed it, it asked what OS I'm going to use it for. Not quite sure if I chose both or just Mac. But those files have somehow dissappeared.
Now in Disk Utility...the RAID tab, Format says it is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but then in the Erase tab it says Format: Windows NT Filesystem
Which format is it set to!?!?!?!?!?!?!
    Now to the main point:
I also have a new 13" MacBook Pro. When I plug it into it, I only have Read Permissions. How do I make it have Write Permissions as well?
Sorry for the long essay...I hope you can help me. I might have two problems here.
    1. Is the format correctly set up for my iMac?
    2. How do I set it to have Read/Write permissions on different computers?
    Thanks.

The Format is incorrect for Mac use, as you guessed.  Go into Disk Utility again, highlight the external har drive in the left hamd column by clicking on it and select the "Erase" tab, up and over to the right.  Then select the Format below that will be installed as "Mac OS Extended (Journeled)".  THEN, OK the erasure.  That should clear things up.
Note: your Windows PC will NO LONGER be able to read the external hard drive.  It will be formatted for OS X use.
    Hope this helps

  • Help with utl_file (read/write file from local directory)

Need help reading/writing file on local machine from plsql using 10.2 DB.
I am trying to read/write a file from a local directory(laptop) without success.
I have been able to read/write to the database server directory but can't write to directory on local machine.
The utl_file_dir parm has been set to * and the db restarted but I can't get it to work... Here's the plsql statement.
    out_file := UTL_FILE.FOPEN ( 'C:\PLSQL', 'TEST.TXT', 'W' ,32767);
Whenever I run it continues to write to c:\PLSQL dir on the database server. Have looked at the "Directory" object and created MY_DIR = C:\PLSQL but it writes to the db server.
Running 10.2 on a remote windows server, running PLSQL using sql*navigator.
Thanks in advance for your help..

I don't see how you expect the server to be able to see your laptop across the network, hack into it and start writing files. Even if it could, what if there is more than one laptop with a C: drive? How would it know which one to write to?
Is there a shared drive on the server you can access via the laptop?

  • Mac Mini drive read/write 20MB/s

I've been fighting a slow drive for months and have yet to find a solution.  Most recently I installed a 1 TB 7200 RPM drive from OWC, cloned my drive and find the new drive measures about the same read/write speed of 20-25 MB/s.  I'm at a loss to find a solution.  Interestingly when I test the stock 500 GB drive that is now reformatted and empty I see it measures 50 MB/s read/write.
The drive has about 300 GB of 1 TB free and should be relatively fragment free since I copied over the data in one swoop.
I've seen others suggesting a format/reinstall but that sounds to me like the Windows mentality of "hiding" the problem instead of locating and resolving the issue (e.g. reboot and see if it goes away...solved!).  Notably, if I take the time to reinstall and reconfigure after formatting how do I know I won't just end up in the same circumstance again.
I appreciate any suggestions to locate what might be causing the slow speed or any troubleshooting tips to narrow the culprit.  For example, I ran...
    kextstat | grep -v com.apple
...a while back and discovered I had FSEventer still installed from long ago when I tried it out briefly  It installs a kext that tracks all filesystem activity so it noticebly affects read/write speed.  Removing that moved me from 15 MB/s to the 20s.  Now kexstat doesn't list any non-Apple kexts.
I appreciate any other suggestions to discover drivers or really software of any kind beyond default Apple provided OS-level stuff that I can systematically eliminate in search of a solution.
Thanks for any and all help!

Hi, I'm thinking reformat isn't the way to go, leastwise not yet!
You get these speeds copying to/from what?
What size Cache is this new drive?
How is this drive connected, internally or externally?
    Might try Etrecheck...

  • Hard drive read/write question

    Hi,
I purchased this mac pro(2008) with the stock seagate 320gb hard drive (model ST3320820AS_P) and I am interested to know what kind of read write numbers to expect from this drive.
I am having a tough time trying to find any numbers that aren't in reference to RAID setups, and became concerned that this drive might be working at peak performance due to firmware issues others are talking about.
(tangent - I would like to add more drives, but am on the fence for WD or seagate)

  • Thunderbolt drive Read/Write speeds have significantly dropped

I got a new Western Digital Thunderbolt VelociRaptor drive. When I did speed tests on it using "BlackmagicDesign" Speed Test software initially (when empty) the drive was giving me read and write speeds of 350 MB/s. Now however I have 90% of the drive occupied with data and the read/write speeds have dropped significantly to 230 MB/s. Any ideas as to why and how I could improve this?
    Thanks

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.
I can't comment specifically on your Aperture plan, but with some software it's important to avoid simultaneous access by more than one user.

I was having an issue with 17inch macbook pro. was getting 4.0mb/s read write speed tops. and smart status failure.
So i replaced the drive. The new drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB WD drive. I'm getting 12.0mb/s on top speed. Computer feels a little quicker but still slow overall.

Is it just me or do those read/write speeds on the new drive still seem slow?

From what I see, the elements being written and read are not synched to the same iteration number, and thus are not array-indexed the same, therefore, you'll have a difference in the array index # for what was written and what was read. In other words, the DSS-read is not always at the same iteration # (index #) as the DSS-write when the write and read occur.
However, with that thought, you could remove all looping and simply DSS-write the whole array to your DSS-read. Then you keep the indexing equal on both ends. When you send and receive a whole array, no looping is needed, so the process also is quicker.
Well, that's how I see it, good luck with it, Doug

  • Passport will mount on my desktop, but cannot access drive( read/write/copy/move) Yosemite MBP 2007

I have an older MacBook Pro (2007-2008) running the most current version of Yosemite. I just purchased my drive recently, but didn't try to use it till the other day. The drive mounts on my desktop, but I cannot copy files to it at all. When I try to do this, I get no error messages of any type. It just doesn't complete the action when I try to do so. I've tried "dragging" files to the drive. I've tried copy and paste. Nothing seems to work. I bought this drive for my Mac laptop exclusively, for file storage and transfer, etc. I do not intend to use it as a Time Machine backup drive. Basically, I want to be able to move files from any computer (Mac or PC), to this drive, for use, editing, etc. on my Mac. This drive is currently empty.  No files on it.  This was my 1st time use attempt. Is this possibly just a formatting issue? I've not changed anything on the drive. I literally took it out of the packaging, and plugged it into my Mac. It has not been used (yet) on a PC. Suggestions? Thank you, Dave

I can format my drive, but I want to retain the cross platform in doing so.    I just can't remember how to do it. I do not know what the drive is formatted to, out of the box.  Is that why I cannot write any files from my mac, to that drive? Again, it will mount on my Mac desktop, but wont let me do anything else. If I format, I just want to make sure I can copy files from my PC, if necessary, and still have access to those files on my Mac.  And, visa versa... Thanks again, Dave

  • External Drive Read/Write

My access to my own external drive has become tenuous.
Everything worked fine until I created a new user on my MacBook that was actually a Time Machine backup of my G4 that Migration Assistant brought over (that computer went down). Somewhere along the line, I realized that my main user account on the MacBook (the original user) was being locked out of certain resources on my Lacie 250 GB external drive.
In the Sharing & Permissions arrow of the Get Info on the drive, it says I have custom access. The owner is listed as (unknown) and can read and write; there is also a group called Everyone, but this group has no access. These names are grayed out. When I click on the plus sign or the configure wheel and try to add a user, whatever name I type in merits the message: The name you entered is not valid. Please try again.
What has happened that I can't access my own drive and how can I remedy the situation? Any thoughts would be appreciated. FYI, I'm an intermediate Mac user who can work with Terminal if commands are provided. Thanks!
    Grant

In the Get Info window and the Sharing and Permissions section (I don't have an Ownership and Sharing section), first off there's no lock and I'm not prompted to authenticate. When I try to change privileges of the two users that are already there (unknown and everybody), nothing changes. And when I click on the plus sign to add a user, I'm not given a list but only a window into which I must type a name. I've tried every name I can think to put in there, but haven't had any luck getting one of them accepted.
Because this might help, here's how I have things laid out:
The MacBook is named Gieseke. The main, original user is Grant (shortname: granta). The user I added is Geesekey (shortname: geese). I also have two other users that System Preferences lists as sharing only: Grant & Amy Gieseke and Guest. I've tried typing each of these names in as a new user, but none of them have been accepted.
