HELP!!! Computer not starting properly

Hey, I can't get my computer to start up properly.  After I turn off the computer and try to turn it back on, the D-bracket shows the four red lights, which is supposed to be a damaged or incorrectly mounted processor.
I know that there is nothing wrong with the processor, because it has worked fine in other mobos, and I'm almost positive that it is installed properly, because I've had a bit of experience doing it.
To get the computer to start up, I have to detach the video card, turn on the computer for a few seconds, turn off the computer, reattach the video card, and then turn the computer back on.  It starts up fine after that.  What is the problem?  Any suggestions would be great. :O

P.S.  Everything has worked fine on a different mobo, the only thing I'm not sure of is the one I'm using now.

It sounds as if you did not put in a pair of identical memory modules or did not use guaranteed compatible memry modules. You can't use the module that was already there unless the one you are adding is identical in all respects.
Only use guaranteed modules in identical pairs if you want your memory upgrade to work right the first time.

My I Mac does not start properly without pressing option and apple keys ,and it freezes

    Try any of the following:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • IBook not starting properly

My iBook is not starting properly. The machine begins normally: gray screen to blue and a bar filling from left to right, but it does not move past this point. I understand how to re-install OS X for example, but I am reluctant to do that when it seems the problem is only in getting the wheels spinning... Help! What do you suggest?

Last question first, the command to shut down from Single-User Mode is:
    shutdown now -h
Check out this Apple Knowledge Base article which addresses the exact problem you're seeing:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302411
DiskWarrior is likely your best bet for recovering your hard drive. Someone said it is available at Apple Stores, or you can use the online link I've provided here.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to access your hard drive via FireWire Target Disk Mode in order to retrieve your important files to the hard drive of the other Mac.
    Good luck.

No, this reply is not helpful. It simply generates this little gem:
"This service requires the conversion feature to be enabled.
    Configure conversion ?"
And the same clicking on buttons that makes nothing happen and going around in circles with the escape key.

    Hi..
Your profile indicates you are running Lion v10.7 so you need to use Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary or reinstall Mac OS X.

If you are using Windows 7, go to:
    Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features
Look for a program called 'Apple Mobile Device Support'
    Right-click on it
    Click 'repair'
Wait until the repair operation is complete, and voila, your problem should be solved, itunes will recognise your iphone/ipod once more. This worked for me.

I can no longer run System Update; it displays the splash screen, then a small window pops up with the above error message. I just ran it last a day or two ago, and it installed a few things; since then I have also run Microsoft Update and it also installed a few things, which I backed out one at a time (except for the malicious software removal updates)--all to no avail.  Anyone else seen this, any suggestions?

  • Windows Not starting properly

Well Im trying to recover my Toshiba M115 is because ever single time i turn my laptop on it says. Windows is not loading properly. And you can either Start Windows Normaly which turns my screen complete black. LAst Known good Configuration which also makes my screen black. I can start in Safe mode(Command Prompt), Safe Mode with Networking, or Just Safe Mode. The Safe Mode ones turn my computer into a bunch of numbers and letters which moves for a little then stops. Any Help! I Have tried to recover it with my CD but all I get is more problems which I explained in another thread. PLEASE HELP
    Yah im a Geek

I read your previous threads so I know what you are talking about. Bottom line is you are going to need to reimage the hard drive. Windows is not working in anyway you try. At the same time, your current Recovery CD is not working either. Was this computer serviced? Was the system board or hard drive replaced earlier? It could be that the tech that worked on the computer forgot to do something. If that is not the case, then I feel that the Recovery CD you are using is defective. Waiting several hours for the Recovery CD to finish is not normal. So maybe either the Recovery CD is bad or maybe there is some problem with the CD drive. Try installing a different copy of the operating system. If it installs it means that your Recovery CD could be bad. If not, maybe you have a bad DVD drive in the computer.

  • PowerMac G5 not starting properly

Sorry to repost but I accidently marked my discussion as answered. Please see:https://discussions.apple.com/message/17155939#17155939
    Hi,
    I have the following machine:
    Model Id:PowerMac11,2
    Processor Name: PowerPc G5 (1.1)
    Dual 2.3 GHz
    2GB RAM
    Problem:
Starting 12/28/2011 After I came home from work the Machine would not boot up. The white light would light up, the fans would start spinning normally but there would be no chime and nothing else would respond (keybord, monitor, etc). After a few seconds the fans will start spinning and getting louder. I forced quit it by holding down the power button. I tried to restarted and would get the same results.
    I tried  the following:
Disconnected all devices/cables except keybord and monitor
Removed video card and put back in
    reset the SMU
have not tried resetting PMU because the keybord was not getting power
    removed all RAM
installed only 2 sticks of RAM
After doing all of the above to no avail, I put my ram back in (properly) and called it quits for the night. I unplugged the power cord from the back of the machine.
The next day after work I came home, plugged in the power cord and started the machine. To my surprise it bootted up just fine. I ran the utility tool to verify the disk and it failed (knowing that this is not the problem I decided to boot off the Installl disk and repair anyways). I hit restart and was back to the computer not responding and reacting like the night before (no response, then fans start reving). I tried to restart it a few times to no avail. Again I pulled the power cable out from the back of the machine and went to bed.
Today I came home and like the night before it started up, I booted of the CD this time and repaired the disk, re-verified and  all was well. I tried to restart it and i'm back to the machine not responding.
Any help with this is hugely appreciated!! Could it be the pram battery?
    Please advice.
    Thanks - Frank

Frank, if you have a multi-meter you can check it out, it's hard to find any Apple people to still work on G5s at all, maybe a few independent AASPs though.
Here's some more info on G5 PSU voltage values:

Looks like they changed the link, sorry...

  • Tried to replace RAM but now computer not starting...PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 - are my hard drives safe? What's up?

Hello - I tried to increase the RAM in my old and trusted Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0...2005)  tonight and now I'm in trouble. It has only 4 slots for RAM.  It came installed with 2X256 and 2X512 ram cards.  I bought 2X 1GB of Ram from Crucial.com after sending them the specs of my computer they assured me it was the right RAM.  I installed the RAM just how the youtube tutorials instructed....  I replaced the 2 256 cards with the new 1GB cards and closed up the computer......note:  I also "dusted" the inside of the mac very carefully and lightly with a barely damp rag.....
I plugged her in and the power button light immediately went on but the computer did not.  The button wouldn't respond to being held down either.   No sign of a startup or a fan noise. Nothing on the screen, no signal.... Nothing.....  So I tried reversing the order of the RAM, I installed the 1GB along with the 512's.  Nothing again, just the light turns on when I plug her in.  Then I returned the RAM to the original configuration.....again NOTHING...just the light on.
I reset the SMU.  (little button underneath the RAM area)  I haven't tried to reset the PRAM yet, but I'm pretty sure that will not work either as she is not starting up at all....just the light is on...  I didn't get a noticeable shock or static spark during the entire operation either. ****....whats up?
Are my Hard Drives safe in there?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks in advance to your advice, T

Ouch!  That was not the way to get dust out.  Running that damp rag anywhere near an electronic component, even if you were wearing a properly grounded writs strap, was way dangerous.
Did you lay the machine on its left side when you replaced the RAM?  That is much safer (though the recommendation only shows up in the service documentation, not the user guide, for some reason).
What I would do at this point is to remove all RAM and try to power the machine.  If other stuff is OK, you won't start but you will see the lunar LED flashing in a repetitive pattern above the power switch.  If you don't see that happening, then things are exceptionally serious.

  • Jar file not starting properly when in dir with name 2 or more words

    Hello,
I have a pretty weird problem here. When I start my jar file from a directory like Test/MyJar.jar everything is fine. But if I try to start it from Test 1/MyJar.jar the file is not running properly. The jar file reads files from it's directory and the message I receive is can't find Test20%1/MyFile.txt.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Anyway. Probably the easiest thing is to not read from the directory. Rather, put the files you need to read into the Jar file itself, and read them using Class.getResourceAsStream.
This is a workaround, but it's a good one.
