You guys are heartless. Even you weren't born with programming knowledge hard-coded into your brain. Even you had to start from zero. Even you had to struggle at something in your life. In this spirit, I think that we should give this poor student a break and try to help him as much as possible. Here, try out my program, and perhaps it will give you some ideas for your own:
public class WordCountingHomework
  public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException
    String input = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please enter a String");
    // get your String and split the String into words
    // This will allow you to count words easily
    String[] strArray = new String(wordCountByteArray).split(" ");
    int delay = 400;
    for (;;)
      // loop through the array to count the words
      for (String string : strArray)
        System.out.print(string + " ");
        Thread.sleep(delay);
      System.out.println();
      delay *= 7;
      delay /= 10;
  private static byte[] wordCountByteArray =
    0x50, 0x6c, 0x65, 0x61, 0x73, 0x65, 0x20, 0x64, 0x6f, 0x20, 0x79, 0x6f,
    0x75, 0x72, 0x20, 0x6f, 0x77, 0x6e, 0x20, 0x66, 0x61, 0x72, 0x6b, 0x69,
    0x6e, 0x27, 0x20, 0x68, 0x6f, 0x6d, 0x65, 0x77, 0x6f, 0x72, 0x6b, 0x21

  • How can I count the number of values in one column which answer to a condition in another column?

    I'm using Numbers 3.2 and would like to count the names in a column which satisfy a condition in a different column. There are 3 "streams" through which these names have come to me, and I would like to easily identify how many have come from each stream. Any help?

    Hi DirtyDawg,
    COUNTIF is your friend here.
    If your source is in column C and your streams are 1, 2 and 3:
    =COUNTIF(C,"=stream1")
    =COUNTIF(C,"=stream2")
    =COUNTIF(C,"=stream3")
    These need to be in a footer or header row or in a different column than C.
    hope this helps,

  • Count the number of words in a field?

    Hi,
    I am trying to classify records inside of a view by implementing logic that looks at the name associated with that record. I need to know if the record is an individual or a company. So far I have created a case that looks like this:
    CASE WHEN NAME LIKE '%COMP%' THEN 'COMPANY'
    WHEN NAME LIKE '%LLC%' THEN 'LLC'
    ELSE NULL AS RECORD TYPE
    I would like to implement logic into this case to identify individuals. Since most of the names of individuals in my data contain a first name, middle initial, and a last name, I was wondering if it is possible to add logic that can identify this pattern
    in my case. Basically I'd like to say if NAME contains a string of any length - a space - a string with one character - a space - and a string of any length, then that record is an individual. Is this possible? Thanks.

    Thanks this works. How does the code below work though? I don't see how it is able to differentiate between when the middle string is one character and when the middle string is multiple characters.
    LIKE '%[A-Za-z] [A-Za-z] [A-Za-z]%'
    the pattern [A-Za-z] means a single occurance of an alphabet so in above case it looks for cases where a single alphabet is preceded and succeded by a space
    character which will be true only for the individual names

    I can print out the amount of tokens from each line,
    But i only want the first line to be counted, And i
    also do not want the delimeters to be counted.
    could you please give me some ideas?
    Thanks
    try
       BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("item.kr"));
       while((str=br.readLine())!= null)
          itemslist.add(str);
    catch(IOException ioe)
       System.out.println("Exception Occurred!!!");
    }This snippet gets one Line from the item.kr file.
    Then i would count (By useing a diffrent String Tokenizer) to count only this line!!!

  • Is there a way to count the number of times an array moves from positive to negative?

    I have an array of values, and I need to find the number of times that the array changes signs (from positive to negative, or vice versa). In other words from a graphical standpoint, how many times a certain line crosses the x-axis. Counting the number of times the array equals zero does not help however, because the array does not always equal exactly zero when it crosses the axis (ie, the points could move from .1 to -.1).
    Thanks for you help. Feel free to email me at [email protected] I only have lv 5.1.1 so if you attach any files, they cannot be version 6.0.

    Attached is a VI showing the # of Pos and Neg numbers in an array, with 0 considered as non-Pos. It is easily modifiable to other parameters - including using the X-axis value as your compare point versus only Zero.
    This is a modified VI from LV (Separate Array.vi)
    Compare this with your other responses to find the best fit.

  • Counting the number of IDocs in a package of IDocs in BPM

    Hello All,
        I need a solution where I need to count the number of EDI_DC40  segments (The IDoc Count) in a package of IDoc's. The following is the scenario
    1) We are receiving a package of IDoc's in receive step using the XI File Adapter. I was wondering if there is a way that I can count the number of IDoc's in the BPM using a container operation or some other Method. I appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

    HI,
    We have two ooptions,
    one as explained above , yu can use standard count function and that can be used.

  • How count the number of substrings in a string

    Hi all,
    I wonder if someone can help me and point out where I'm going wrong.
    I want to count the number of substring starting with 'd' and ending with 'e' in a string supplied by a user.
    currently my code is only counting the number of 'd' and 'e' characters in the string.
        public static void main (String [] args)
             Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
             String mstring;// string variable that the user will enter
             int i = 0; // upstep variable
             int count = 0; // int variable to count the number of substrings
             System.out.print("Enter a string: ");
             mstring = input.nextLine();
             while (i != mstring.length())
                       if(mstring.charAt(i)=='d'){count++;}
                       else if (mstring.charAt(i)=='e'){count++;}
                       i++;
             System.out.println("The total d e substrings is " + count);
    }For example if the user enters adbedeaadffe the total number of substrings should be 5 but I'm getting 6 as the program is just counting the number of times it comes across 'd' and 'e'
    Can anyone shed some light on this for me thanks.

    Hi all I had a good few replies to this question but they seem to have been removed from the system for some reason.
    I've changed my code slightly and it works but only for one round of the guard.
                   Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in)
             String mstring;// main string variable that the user will enter
             int i = 0;  // upstep variable
             int count = 0; // int variable to count the number of substrings
         System.out.print("Enter a string: ");
             mstring = input.nextLine();
             int y =mstring.length();
             while (i != mstring.length() && y !=0)
             if (mstring.charAt(i) == 'd' && mstring.charAt(y-1)=='e'){count = count+1;}
             y--;
             i++;
             System.out.println("The total a b substrings is " + (count));The above code will only print out one substring of adbedeaadffe but that is not what I need, I need to be able to print out all of the substrings.
    Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong.
    Thanks in advance

  • How do I count the number of cells with a particular text in it?

    I have a column with peoples name in each cell. I want to count the numbe rof times a persons name appears in the column. How do I do this? any help would be great ! thanks in advance.

    Hi Evilhomer,
    The function COUNTIF will do this. Here are two Tables on one sheet. Table 1 contains names in Column B.
    Table 2 contains the names once only (in any order) in Column A, with a COUNTIF formula in Column B to count how many times a name occurs in Table 1.
    The formula in Sheet 2, Cell B2 is:
    =COUNTIF(Table 1 :: B2:B5,A2)
    Enter the formula in B2 then copy down.
    It is easier to create the two tables on one sheet. If you then want to move a table to another sheet, Numbers will convert the formulas to keep the references valid.
    There are other ways to do what you want. Please reply if this is not what you want.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • How to Count total number of Words in PDF?

    I am used Adobe Acrobat javascript inbuilt function getPageNumWords(<pagenumber>) it return the number of words present in specified page, but while am copy and paste text content from PDF file to MS Word, Words count given by MS Word is little bit differ, so any one know in which aspect Acrobat count the words?
    Which words count result is correct?
    Shall is go with Acrobat Words count result or MS Words count result?
    But I want to count the total number of words in PDF file (my input is PDF file) else can I go with iText?
    Words count in PDf using iText is possible?

    Word counts are likely to vary a little according to how you count. For instance, are hyphenated words one or two words? What if the hyphen is at the end of a line? Do numbers count as words? Headers and footers? Captions?
    Generally, you just accept a slight variation. If you are counting words in a professional context, i.e. where payment is per word, you probably need a contractual definition of how words are to be counted; in the absence of one, I suggest you use Word.

  • Count the number of comments in a PDF file automatically?

    Hello O Experts,
    My documentation team members use Acrobat and Reader 8, and frequently need to count the number of comments in a PDF file. Is it possible to count the number of comments automatically? We can't find this functionality anywhere, and have to resort to manual counting. Since our PDFs can contain thousands of comments, this is very time-consuming. I've tried searching the Web and these forums, but the words "count" and "comments" are too frequent in other contexts to find anything useful...
    Thanks and best regards,
    --M.T.

    Hi again sypark,
    That is a great idea, and it works!
    I would actually search on a more unique phrase - for instance, "Subject:" - that definitively occurs a single time per comment. The reason is:
    There are many types of comments, not just sticky notes... you have highlights, text deletions, text insertions, replacement text, attachments, callouts, and so on. But each of them has a "Subject:" in the summary.
    It's best to avoid searching for the comment names because they differ by language (an important issue when you work with colleagues in multiple countries). For example, the name of the "Highlight" comment type in French is "Texte surligné" - so you'd have to search for the latter term to get an accurate count.
    In any case, your method is flexible and allows for easy customization of comment counts. Many thanks for your effective help!
    Cheers,
    --Michael

  • Count the number of lines in  each file in a directory

    Hello,
    I would like to count the number of lines for each file in my directory and subdirectories.
    I wonder how can I count the lines of the specified files?
    Here is the program which is listed the files in the specified directory:
                        String path = "C:/User/Studies/Pracices/src/Pract1";
           String files;
           File folder = new File(path);
           File[] listOfFiles = folder.listFiles();
           for (int i = 0; i < listOfFiles.length; i++)
            if (listOfFiles.isFile())
         files = listOfFiles[i].getName();
         System.out.println(files);

    Ok so one more question.
    Actually my path is pointing to one Directory and like here I can just read from one file that the name of the file should be specified in the path is it possible to help me in that part?
    File f = new File("C:/User/Studies/Practices/src/Pract1/");
    FileReader fr = new FileReader(f);
          BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(fr);
          String str = br.readLine();
              LineNumberReader ln = new LineNumberReader(br);
              int count = 0;
              while (ln.readLine()!=null)
                  count++;
              System.out.println("no. of lines in the file = " + count);
