Help for the new user

Apologies for the fairly basic nature of these questions, normally I would just head into an Apple Store and get some assistance. Unfortunately I am in the middle of nowhere without a reliable internet connection and want to back up my Macbook.
Any help would be appreciated;
1. I intend to grab a 500gb Time Capsule and back up over an ethernet cable, I do not have an internet connection that I can link the time capsule into at the moment - will there be any issues???
2. Does time capsule backup via bluetooth (sorry if that is a dumb question I dont know much about bluetooth)??
3. When I head home, will the time capasule easily intergrate into my wifi network?? and
4. Is there a way I can update the software in the time capsule if required, through my Macbook - without having the time capsule connected to the internet??

The Time Capsule (TC) does not require an Internet connection in order to be the destination for backups from your MacBook (MB). Your MB can perform these backups while connected either by wire or wirelessly to the TC.

No. There are no provisions on any of the AirPorts, including the TC, for Bluetooth.
3. When I head home, will the time capasule easily intergrate into my wifi network??
Not knowing exactly what your home Wi-Fi network consists of, it would be hard to say, but the TC is capable of integrating with most existing wired or wireless routers.
4. Is there a way I can update the software in the time capsule if required, through my Macbook - without having the time capsule connected to the internet??
Sorry. Not that I'm aware of.

Currently I have an original AppleTV with audio RCA plugs to mini plug into my BOSE speakers.
The 2nd Gen AppleTv has a Toslink input. I've looked at cables of Toslink to optical mini. Will this cable work? The optical mini part I'm not sure of what it is.

If I understand your question correctly, you want to connect your Apple TV2 to your Bose system using a mini plug.
You will need an optical to digital coax RCA converter (find it on Ebay about $15), then you can connect your mini cable. Here is a link to one I recently bought on Ebay: http://fwd4.me/nrQ

What is the password for the new user account that is set up via Migration Assistant?

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro, and used Migration Assistant to download My Documents from a previous PC desktop. The migration was successful, but afterwards the new user account that was set up to house all the new documents became inaccessible to me.
My administrator's password works for my computer and I am able to log in and out, change settings, etc.
However, if I try to log in to the new user account, no password works. Through the administrator's account I have also attempted to change the password, and I am allowed to do so, but when I use the new password I set up, it still denies me access.
Additionally, if I log out the administrator's account and click the new account to log in, it prompts me to make a new password for the account, and whatever I enter is also rejected as "incorrect." (The screen shakes)
I am very frustrated my inability to access this information I must use to work, and I have no idea what the password might be, or how to change it properly.
PLEASE HELP COMMUNITY! I have only had my mac for about a week and I have had it up to hear with this "user friendly" system.

You can change the password from Visual administrator. login to visual administrator, and select services,, under that you will find the system details. change the password.
even if the visual administrator password is expired then u can go thorugh configtoo.bat and there u can change the password.
if that even not possible then u need to login to sql and can execute the commands for changing password.

I've added a new user to my computer and there doesn't seem to be any firefox connected to it. Do I have to install firefox for the new user also?

I went to set up a separate user for my child and when I was finished there was no Firefox icon . All it showed was Explorer. Do I have to download Firefox for every user? Please help?

Sounds that you didn't create a Firefox desktop icon for each user in the All Users group (C:\Users\All Users\Desktop), but only for the current user. You can either create a desktop shortcut to start Firefox on the desktop of your child to the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" program or create that shortcut for all users in the "C:\Users\All Users\Desktop" folder.
If you also need a Start menu entry that place a shortcut here:
"C:\Users\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Mozilla Firefox"

Help for the end users

(This isn't really a technical question, so apologies if I've posted this in the wrong forum.)
I have been using Java Web Start for some time to distribute some of my software. I appreciate not having to create separate installers for each OS, and that I can ensure that all my users have the latest stable version of the software at all times. But when one of my users reports that they can't even run my application, it can be very difficult to diagnose the problem remotely.
The main problem is that my app is the only Java Web Start app most of my users have seen. So I spend most of my time diagnosing issues that have nothing to do with my code. The problem might be a browser issue. Maybe they haven't installed Java, or the browser doesn't "see" the Java installation. Maybe they're trying to launch the app by double-clicking on one of its data files. Maybe they aren't connected to the Internet and it's the first time they're using my app. Or as often happens, maybe it did exactly what it was supposed to do, but since it didn't "look" like the type of install that they're used to, they think that it didn't work!
These issues have seriously tempted me to give up on Java Web Start. But then I realised that it would solve a lot of problems if I could direct my users to a page on the Sun website that:
1. Had a sample Java Web Start app they could try running, and
2. Provided information to help non-technical users diagnose most problems they might encounter.
Virtually all of the information I've found about Java Web Start is targeted toward the person who is developing or deploying the application. And the one sample web start app I've found on Sun's website (http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/JavaLP/javawebstart/AutoInstallDemo.html) is for Windows only. I need a way to support my Mac users. (Fortunately, all my Linux users are techies!)
So how about it? Or is there already such a page, and I just haven't found it yet?

Yes you can have the results email to your email address if
that's what you want. If your users are going to take the "quiz"
from an on-line (web) location, there are going to be problems with
both web-based mail services because the email scoring
notification option is a simple Java-script invoking the "mailto"
command. And of course, those without an email account are a
special problem because they have no way to "mail" the results to
you , and you would have no way of knowing who they came from
anyway.

Little Help For the New Bee

though I work a lot with FCP and all the other pro applications, I have never been in a professional enough environment to have to use Compressor. I have a file that is an MPEG 4 Movie. Dimensions: 720X304. I just need to be able to put it into Final Cut Pro and edit with the best quality. How do I go about converting? I messed around with it for a while, but with no success. It seems very straight foward, but I think I am missing something. Please help if you can.

if i am reading this information correctly, this file's codec is a mpeg, but with AAC audio. are you SURE that you didnt leave out the 4 in mpeg4???
what is the extension of the file, *.mov, *.mp4?
if you want to edit in FCP, then all you have to do is a simple transcode to the file.
seems like you have a widescreen 16:9 (maybe 1.85 or 2.35) file.
you can do this transcode in one of two ways, via QT Pro itself, or Mpegstreamclip.
would you want to keep your video as 16:9 or 4:3?
if you want it 16:9 you have 2 options, 720x480 anamorphic or 960x540 (this is for 16:9, 1.78 FF, so yo will still have mattes).
if you want it 4:3 then you can use 720x480.
the only thing with all this is that your footage is compressed, so try to keep it as lossless as possible throughtout the whole process, like that, you minimize cascade compression (basically compressing the already compressed footage).
make sure that you also keep in mind your codec sequence, like that, you will NOT have to render this footage!~

after that, a folder for the new user is created in the /Users, but there is no information for this new user in the System Preferences -> Users & Groups,
i can't event delete this new user in the Users & Groups setting panel.
so how can i delete this new user?

That may be because you are logged into the new user.

How do I reformat a MacBook for a new user?

I have a previously used MacBook that I am taking to Haiti and giving to a new user there. How do I wipe it clean? I know how to set it up for the new user, but am unsure how to wipe out the previous data, user info, etc. Thanks for your help.

Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

Is there any program that automatically creates a jobsteps for the new users for
a role??
My company BW roles are mapped with R/3. so whenever a new user is created in a R/3 role
it comes and maps with BW Role and creates that users automatically in BW.
Now the problem is if any new users are created in r/3 and mapped with BW. the report
fails to run for the new users unless and until they really login in to the system.
For ex: I have 5 new users which are created in R/3 and properly mapped with BW. But
report fails to runs for the new users.
ERROR: Jobs step fails for the User X
Is there any programe that automatically creates a jobsteps for the new users??

Never mind, disregard. I went in and reset my password to my AirPort Express, and for some reason, it then went through, and is all working and good.

I have signed in as me, have set the main preferences login user as me,and everywhere on the laptop I can use my apple ID except here. It always shows me a greyed out ID of my IT. How can I reset this to my ID? It doesn't give me an option to change the user ID, only a link to reset password. I reset it, but it did not change the problem. Can someone help me?

It's not an ID problem, it's an ownership problem.
When someone uses their personal Apple ID to buy and download content, the content is licensed to them and has their Apple ID engrained in it's DNA. It is an anti-piracy program. And when that personal Apple ID is used to setup a new Mac, it involves the Mac itself, the shipping OS and any pre-installed apps as well.
It's not the correct way to handle Macs that belong to a business or an institution. And had it been handled correctly they would not now be in this predictument needing a drastic remedy.

How can I set the default home page for all new users in Firefox 4

I'm trying to deploy FF 4.0rc1 in a corporate environment but I can't find a way to set the default home page or any other settings for that matter.
Is there a way to set the default home page for all new users and lock it so that the users can't change home page?

In Firefox 4 the template folder for new profiles (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile\
) doesn't exist. You can create that \defaults\profile\ folder and place a file user.js in it with the prefs that you want to initialize.

Unless you transfer the files from Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant creates a new user with the data.
To transfer the files to your first user, you have to log on this new user, and copy all your files to /Users/Shard folder. This is a folder where you can put the files you want to share between two or more users, and all users can read and write in it.
After copying the files, go to your first user, open /Users/Shared folder, and copy the files to your user folders. If you migrated applications, you must know that they are stored in a common folder (/Applications), so you don't have to transfer them. To open /Users/Shared folder, open Go menu (in the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the folder
