hi everyone!

thanx!

ola aqua!
ok thanx.look in the mean time i was having a look at the documentation on the osx installation guide that came with my mbp and there is a part that explains how to erase the hd.should i follow those steps?they seem very right to me..
thanx in any case
star will follow
this is the info i gathered:
"Erasing and Formatting Your Disk
When you install Mac OS X, you can erase the destination disk. To do this, click Options in the "Select a Destination" pane of the Installer. Select "Erase and Install" and then choose a format. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Important: Because the "Erase and Install" option erases your destination disk, you should back up your essential files before installing Mac OS X.
You can also divide your hard disk into several partitions before you install Mac OS X. To do this, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility and click Partition. Partitioning erases the entire hard disk, so be sure to back up your essential files first. Follow the instructions above to install Mac OS X and applications.
Note: Before you can install the applications that came with your computer on a partition, Mac OS X must be installed on the partition."
im just not sure i understood the partition thing but ill have a closer look and ill sort it out ,i guess-hope!!
many thanx

i lost all my backup files, work, my life! i have 2 HDD and one is suppose to be installed onto and the other one is my backup hdd..
what happened is i selected onto the wrong hard-disk...
is there anything i can do to recover back files that i installed over osx?
    any suggestion much appreciated

Hi Ma'e, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Installing OS X should not overwrite your files unless you chose "erase and install". If you chose "Archive and install" look for a folder on the top level of your hard drive called "Previous System".
If you did an "erase and install", If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it. Also, a service that has been recommended but I cannot personally endorse is DriveSavers.

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.
    Thanks for your help!!!

Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy

  • Phantom folders after HD format and clean osx install

I was having frequent checksum and other misc errors while trying to mount DMGs or install programs so i decided to format my drive and do a clean install of snow leopard.
After the format and clean install of snow leopard, I did the following..
    Join my wi-fi network
    Run software update
    Installed Xcode
Installed macports, ruby19, python, scala, macruby
installed bbedit, textmate, yojimbo, coda, transmit, omniplan, omnigraffle, omnifocus
    Run mobileme sync
and then i discovered the following folders in my application folder.
    Access Music
    Adobe Bridge CS5.
These folders used to be in my applications folder along with 100+ other applications before I formatted and installed snow leopard.
None of the applications I installed, after snow leopard are dependent or related to these 2 phantom apps even remotely.
    How could this have happened?
I'm not on drugs, I've developed software for over 25 years and I'm currently an Architect for financial site that serves millions of users well, so I guess I'm not a complete idiot and I'm also not senile. I'm not 40 yet
Can someone offer an explanation for this? The apple tech I mentioned this to, thought I was a moron as I expected he would. He did find issues with my drive using Disk Warrior though even though disk utility and tech tool had found nothing after several runs.

I'm sorry you had that experience with the Apple tech.
Files still remain on the hard drive even after a format if not done with several passes
If you formatted in Disk Utility or used Disk Utility to format, the data that was formatted would be converted into "Free Space" and placed near the end of the drive. There are security options in Disc Utility that prevent this from happening.
Most likely the reason was those folders remained was because the "Free Space" was not wiped. Disc Warrior, a data recovery software was able to locate more files because of this. It does a great job of recovering deleted or formatted data.
I hope this answers your question.

  • HELP how to install OSX on power book ge prismo running OS 9.2

HELP how to install OSX on powerbook G3 prismo running OS 9.2  help.

First you need to install firmware update 4.1.8. Download at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1395
I used to have a 400MHz G3 Pismo model running Tiger 10.4.11. It ran quite well, however videos will be very slow.
On your Pismo, what is the processor speed, how much RAM and what size hard drive? I maxed out the RAM on mine & installed a 40GB hard drive.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1976068 Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac?

After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710 Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

I have OSX Lion, I want to download and install OSX Maverick, do I have to previously install Mountain Lion ?
    Please help me !

No, assuming your iMac can run Mavericks:
OS X Mavericks supports the following Macs that are already running a minimum of Snow Leopard:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)

  • Just purchased a ipad2, could not us it on my MacBook 10.4.1 - Purchased and installed OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - downloaded and installed latest itunes, set up a itunes accounts and tested by purchasing an album and app, ipad does not show in devises?

I just purchased a ipad2, it would not work on my MacBook 10.4.1 I purchased and installed OSX snow leopard 10.6.3 downloaded and installed the latest itunes, set up an itunes account, purchased some music and apps.  When i plug in my ipod it shows up and works, but when i plug in my new ipad the ipad screen comes up with a display of a cable and itunes but does not show in devises, i have tried all the resets and different USB ports with no success.  Any ideas short of selling it on ebay or buying a new computer?

If you've already tried the usual rebooting of the computer and ports and stuff, there is only a few things left I can think of. It's possible that when you updated iTunes it didn't fully replace all the files, so I suggest just manually removing iTunes and then reinstalling it.
Try removing iTunes manually first http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224 then download a fresh copy, make sure it is 10.3.1
It is essential that you go through Finder to remove those files it mentions. Otherwise they won't be reinstalled when you run the installer again.

  • How to format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.

Dear user, can i format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.

As you need to be on 10.6 to be able access the App Store to download Lion, either get replacement discs via Applecare (you'll need the MBP's serial number to get the right ones) or get the SL retail disc. I would recommend the Original disc replacement set (assuming they were 10.6) as they carry not onlyApple Hardware Test for your model, but the iLife apps other bundled sftware that isn't on the retail disc.
Once you've installed, and used Software Update to get to 10.6.8, you can then get Lion if you're feeling masochistic.

  • Wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk

    Hi everyone,
I need to wipe my iMac and reinstall OS X Leopard. I have the install disks, but my CD drive doesn't work and can't read the disk.
Is there a way for me to wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk?
    Thanks.

You can turn the 2011 iMac into a Firewire Optical drive.
Put the Leo Install Disc into the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 iMac while holding t key to put it into FW Target Disk Mode, with a FW cable connect the the 2, boot older one holding Alt key, choose the Leo Install Disc to boot from.

Click here, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, install it, and run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater. You can then either buy Mountain Lion 10.8 from the Mac App Store or phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

If you mean a retail disk (black with a silver X on it), then no. The retail DVD is for PowerPC only. You can't install it on an Intel based Macbook Pro.

  • How do I upgrade my 320gb HDD to a new 750gb HDD and install OSX?

    Hi all,
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro with a 320gb HDD, and i've bought a 750gb Western Digital HDD to replace it.
    How do I:
Install OSX on to the new 750gb Drive?
Move all my data from my 320gb drive to the new 750gb drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers!

    Hi John,
You would have to replace the old disk with the new disk, then you can run the Mac os X installation disk and install it on your new device (when the installation starts, you first have to format the disk in the until menu if the disk is new, otherwise the installation program does not see it)
For getting the content over to your new installation... It depends what you mean with data. I replaced my disk a while ago as well and reinstalled all software manually and only copied documents, photos etc. In that case just copy your libraries (iPhoto, iTunes, iWeb domain file (if you use it)) and documents to a separate hard disk and copy them back to your Mac after the installation.
In my eyes, the best option would be to buy an external hard disk case so that you can put your old disk in that case and use it as an external usb hard disk. That makes copying your data back much easier... And this way you can still copy files even a month later (in case you forgot something, which in my case always happens ;))
    Good luck,
    Nico

  • Need help erase and install panther. system apps abnormality.

    hello
my ibook has been erratic recently.
and now iTunes, activity monitor, grab, installer, disk utility... etc.
do not launch (cannot open app because xxx is damaged or incomplete).
i've tried fixing permissions, prebinding, emptying cache.
i've copied installer and disk utility from installation disk, so now they work.
i've tried to restore software using the cd, but when it comes to selecting the hard drive,
it's got a red ! and says: (null)
i've tried to start computer from installation cd, however i can't seem to get past grey apple.
(i'm guessing maybe some broken system files restricting it from working,
as i can read the disk properly when i've booted from internal)
as a last resort, i've backed everything up to firewire external (bootable).
i plan to: boot via external
wipe clean internal to extended journaled
    put installation disk in computer
    shutdown and remove internal
    start computer via pressing c
    install system files
    is this feasible??
    thanks alot in advance

    lexlie:
My understanding of what you are trying to do is to:
    1. Reformat and erase internal HDD.
    2. Reinstall from install disk.
    3. Restore from backup.
If I am correct, here is how you might proceed:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Optional: Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
    Installation Process
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update.
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.
