Help - How to compress a 4x3 project shot as wide screen

Hello everyone,  I've shot a short promo on my old PD150 which is naturally a 4x3 format.  However, I use the camera setting that adds a crop top and bottom to make it 16x9.  I import it to final cut pro and cut it as a 16 x 9 sequence. It works fine when I export as a quick time and to DVD.  But when I try to compress it for viewing online - the picture gets squashed vertically so everything looks long and thin!  Any ides on compression settings to sort this out?  Thanks - any thoughts really appreciated

You're actually in the wrong forum for FCP 6. You should post this question in the Final Cut Studio forum.
Good luck.

    Dear All
Firstly, thanks for your help and apologies for posting perhaps an amature question on this forum.
I'm trying to create a sequence which is using footage which was shot on two cameras. One wide screen, and one normal. As you can imagine, when it flips to the wide screen footage there are the black marks top and bottom. Question is, can I confert the wide screen footage to standard?
    Many thanks

Use the same tool I recommended to this guy, the DVCPRO HD FRAMERATE CONVERTER:

  • Wide-screen compressing

I have finished working on a movie built on film clips from my friend's Canon video camera. It shoots wide-screen footage, so the iMovie project is also wide-screen. Now that it is time to compress the project, I am finding that most of the QuickTime options "squish" the image to something that is no longer wide-screen. There are a few options that do not. But these have low-quality resolution.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks!
    Greg M.

I found it! On iMovie 7.0.3 (OS 10.4.11 version) select 'share' then QuickTime then 'movie to AVI'. Next to that selection are 'settings'. There are two adjustable settings: the video was set to 4:3. I changed it to 16:9 for wide-screen.
    Perfect!

  • Help on FCP workflow for a shortform project shot on EX-1 with mixed media

I am about to start the editing process on a project shot with the EX-1. It will be a recruiting video for students aimed primarily at DVD distribution and web video.
It is a shortform project...about 15-20 minutes in duration. About 90% of the footage I am editing will be off the EX-1 (1080 24p). The other 10% is some HDV footage shot at 1080i at 29.97 and some NTSC 4:3 footage 29.97.
I wanted to ask the best way to approach the project and get some forum input.
There will no heavy duty video filters or manipulation. Some lower thirds to identify, etc.
What would users suggest as the sequence settings for the editing timeline in FCP? (If it's a 24p XDCAM EX timeline (no transcoding for the EX-1 footage), then I worry about how FCP will drop frames on the HDV footage and the NTSC footage to make it 24fps). Would it be better to have a XDCAM timeline that is 1080 29.97i (and maybe that setting will better integrate all the footage? Drop everything into that timeline?
Or should I convert all the raw footage to ProRes 422 before editing begins? If so, at what frame rate/format for the three types of material I have?
This is my first foray into mixed media on the timeline...and that's why I am asking assistance on the best way to approach it. Trying to make for the least number of headaches!
Thanks for any help you can offer...
    John

NO no no no no no no no no no no no!!!!
DO NOT USE ProRes 4444! Just because it has a higher number and higher data rate does NOT mean that it is appropriate for editing. What is it with people going "it is bigger, therefore it MUST be better." It isn't.
Regular ProRes 422. Not HQ, NOT 444. 4444 is meant as an ANIMATION codec replacement for embedded alpha channel work, and HQ is for 10-bit and 2K workflows. The EX is an 8-bit codec, so ProRes 422 is the way to go.

  • How to compress my file

    Hi,
I am working on a wedding video that I shot with two cameras. I have edited it down and the final project was about 2 hours and 10 minutes. I used compressor and converted it to a mpeg2 which reduced the file to 1.9 gigs. However, I have come to discover that IDVD does not accept that file type.
Next I re compressed it into a .mov, but that only reduced it to 10 gigs - which won't fit on a standard size dvd...
I re-edited the film to 1 hour and 30 minutes, but still the file size is just over 7 gigs as a .mov.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compress it without having to whittle it down to under an hour?
    Thanks for your help.

When I initially finished the project, I exported as a Quicktime movie and it was 49+ gigs! (Yikes!)
Still learning the Final Cut Suite and opened up Compressor for the first time realizing that it was the tool I needed. I compressed it down to 1.91 gigs, but did so as a .mpg - which I learned was not compatible with either iDVD or Studio Pro.
That's when I scrolled down the list of "settings" and realized I could make it a .mov, which only got it down to 10 gigs. Which is where I was when I posted for help.
I think I finally got it now, thank you so much for the help and advice...

  • Help!!! 24 Advanced Project Flickers/Jittery on DVD

I am desperately hopeful someone can help me. I edited a project that was shot in 24 Advanced, with a time base of 23.98 in FCP, and then exported a 4x3 Progressive QT conversion to Compressor. I compressed it to an MPEG-2, progressive, and imported that project into DVD-Studio Pro. Everything looked fine on the computer, yet when I watch the burned DVD, any excessive movement of the camera creates a jittery look. I fear that when I originally captured this project into FCP I may not have set it up with the correct settings. That aside though, it would be great if I could figure out a solution to this flicker problem, I am not sure what caused it. But being this was my first venture into 24 Advanced territory and have never had problems in the past, I am confident it has something to do with that, and possibly the settings when I captured. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion on connecting an external NTSC monitor, I will do that and see what it looks like. If by chance it is still jittery in FCP, then what would be the next step, to export back out to tape and re-import it with different settings? And if so, any suggestions on the approrpriate settings. As I stated in the original topic in this thread, I was not sure if my settings were correct to begin with. I switched from a PC (Adobe Premiere) editor about four months ago (and will never look back) yet I must admit all the settings in FCP have been a bit overwhelming at times.

Can anyone please help me.. when I click on my timeline in my project library and try to export movie nothing happens! and when I  try to "share" to youtube I get an error message stating that it cannot be exported because it contains "no video"... The 4 minute music video that I've created with shots off my Canon T2i looks and plays great....If I uploaded the videos into Final Cut but did not save them on my desktop or anywhere else on the Mac would this be a reason to get this message? • Please help-Trying to compress to Mpeg-2 for Convention, also resizing issues

    Hello,
I just recently finished making an AMV in Adobe Premiere 5.5, and I am having trouble trying to figure out how to compress it into an Mpeg-2 source for a competition/convention.
I also have these massive black borders on the side of my video that I know is probably due to improper resizing on my part, and although I have tried to remedy this with a new avisynth script of the exported uncompressed AVI (before compressing to MPEG-2), whenever I try to run the avisynth script in either VirtualDubMod or TMPGEnc (the converting program recommended by: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/mpegforcons/) it crashes, although the original video does work.
This is the avisynth script I have created for the post-video:
    FFVideoSource("C:\Users\Freeman\Desktop\Fight the Power.avi")
    FFCopyrightInfringement("C:\Users\Freeman\Desktop\Fight the Power.avi")
    AssumeFPS("23.976")
    SSRC(48000)
    LanczosResize(720,352)
    AddBorders(0,64,0,64)
per the recommendations from the guide listed below
I do not know if the resizing I have set up in the new avisynth script will fix my resizing issues, and I would like to improve that as much as possible, so if someone could clarify for me, that would be greatly appreciated.
You may also notice some audio issues throughout the video, however on further playback this never appears to happen in the same place. I believe this is caused by poor audio quality, and I have a friend of mine working on setting up a lossless source that I will try to recompress with the video before friday, however if someone else might know what is causing this, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the current MPEG-2 I have, however for obvious reasons, I do not consider it acceptable as of yet:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IIKYWRXF
The original export from Premiere is Microsoft AVI Uncompressed, and then attempted to convert to MPEG-2 (I tried multiple settings, they all have the same sizing issues), and as I said before, no matter what I try to do with the avisynth script, it crashes.
I have even tried taking out every line from the new avisynth script except for the first two detailing the location of the video and audio, however this does nothing, it still crashes.
I had to convert all my original source avisynth scripts to AVI files (that are massive, as I am editing from 52 episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood), and so editing the original scripts is impossible at this point, because to my knowledge, that would mean I would have to reconvert them all to AVI, which took over 16 hours, and then that would probably make me have to re-edit this entire video (which if you look at it, based on length and how much work I've put into it: is impossible, especially given the time constraints).
So anything that I can do to fix this will have to be done to the export from Premiere, unless there is a way to work with the AVI's that I made from the avisynth scripts.
The source is primarily 16:9 DVD (Fullmetal Alchemist) and very few parts from a 4:3 DVD (Naruto). (You can recognize these parts in the video, it is whenever someone is rowing in a boat during the lyrics "Row Row")
The avisynth script for all the fullmetal alchemist DVD's is as follows:
    mpeg2source("F:\DVD RIPS\Music Video Rips\Brotherhood\Disc 1 (1-7)\MainMovie\FMA_BROTHERHOOD_P1_D1\FMAB 1-7.d2v", cpu=4)
    ConvertToYV12()
    Spline36Resize(848,480)
    #TTempSmooth()
    FastLineDarkenMod()
    LSFmod(strength=120)
    LUTDeRainbow()
And the avisynth script for the one Naruto DVD is as follows:
    mpeg2source("F:\DVD RIPS\Music Video Rips\Random\Row Row\MainMovie\ROW ROW\VTS_01_1.d2v")
    TFM()
    TDecimate()
    Spline36Resize(848,636)
    Crop(0,78, 0,-78)
These recommendations came from what I could figure out from:
    http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech31/
If anyone is curious, the song is "Libera me from Hell", and it is 44100 from what I could tell when I ran it in WINAMP (I converted it from mp3 to wav through WINAMP, if there is a better way that I am unaware of, please let me know).
I know this is extremely long, and thank you anyone who has taken their time to look through it, it is greatly appreciated.
The deadline for this is friday (5/20/11), so I need help with this ASAP and thanks,
    Dexter

    Dexter,
Those "black borders," if they are visible in the Program Monitor, are most likely due to a mis-match between the Source Files and the Sequence Preset.
If they are only showing up upon Export, then there is likely a mis-match between your Sequence and your Export, and could be either with the Aspect Ratio, or if using non-square pixels, the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio).
I'll defer any commens on AVISynth to the experts here.
    Good luck,

  • How to modify Apple's "Project Proposal" template in Pages 5.0?

In Pages 5.0 I want to use Apple's "Project Proposal" template for my project proposals, but I need to modify Apple's original template.
Removing the image works in the "Modern Report" template - but does not work in the "Project Proposal" template.
What is the difference in how the image is places in the "Modern Report" template vs the "Project Proposal" template?
In Apple's original version on the first page, there is a large image, followed by:
    Project Proposal
    Prepared for: Trenz Pruca, Title
Prepared by: Urna Semper, Job Title
    2013年10月26日
    Proposal number: 123-4567
I need to remove the image, and start my text from the top of the first page. I could manage to remove Apple's original image easily, but the space previously occupied by the image remains as empty space. I tried for a couple of hours to eliminate this empty space (previously occopied by the image) and move the "Project Proposal etc" text to the top, but could not find a way to do that.
Where can I find and modify the offset of the text from the top of the page, or eliminate the empty space previously occupied by the image.
There seem to be some controls hidden somewhere in the Pages software, or of the template itself, which I could not find yet, where this text offset from the top is controlled.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Gerhard

I encounter the same problem today when trying to use this template, and after reading previous replies, I went and copy all the elements (Select All) into a new blank document (don't have an older Pages version) and it worked just fine for me, no overlaping or anything, as you can see on the image below, the layout doesn't start after the image, I just had to tweak it a little, like moving the company name and upper line to the top (and move them to section master) and manually adding the bottom line.
I'm new here, so if any of you can tell me if and how can I upload my Project Proposal template I just created to this discussion, I'll be happy to share it with all of you.

    Hi James,
See in the article the procedure for site provisionning settings.
Note that the project site is created based on the template associated to the chosen project type (EPT) when the user first publishes his project. Be aware that if you allow the user to choose weither or not he'll create a sharepoint site when publishing
his project, he will be prompted in Project Pro with a dialog box giving the choice to create or not the site.

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

bought a  macbook pro retina.  backed up 3yr old macbook pro to external hard drive.  how do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac?  thanks!

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

  • HELP! Getting a 4:3 project from a 16:9 sequence back to 4:3 sequence!

    So here's the dilemma,
I'm helping another user with a video project. The user created a whole movie out of 4:3 stills and an audio file, but arranged them in a 1280x720 (720p30) sequence. Now, of course, the images display with pillarboxing on both sides.
The goal: *Get this already edited sequence back to 4:3 dimensions without pillarboxing from the 16:9 sequence, without having to re-edit it. How do we go about doing this? We would like the final sequence to be DV-NTSC*

Thanks, but I tried that at first before posting here. The problem is, when I remove attributes it puts the image back to original size, scaling it up so large that I can't even see it well in the canvas. Then, Final Cut won't let me scale it down small enough to see the whole original image.
Tom Wolsky on the FCE forum suggested this:
Make a new sequence that's DV 4:3 and copy and paste the content from the HD sequence to the DV sequence. Depending on the size of the still images you may need to rescale them in FCE, but this should give you cleaner results than nesting the HD sequence.
I will try it tonight and get back telling how it worked.
