Help on FCP workflow for a shortform project shot on EX-1 with mixed media

I am about to start the editing process on a project shot with the EX-1. It will be a recruiting video for students aimed primarily at DVD distribution and web video.
It is a shortform project...about 15-20 minutes in duration. About 90% of the footage I am editing will be off the EX-1 (1080 24p). The other 10% is some HDV footage shot at 1080i at 29.97 and some NTSC 4:3 footage 29.97.
I wanted to ask the best way to approach the project and get some forum input.
There will no heavy duty video filters or manipulation. Some lower thirds to identify, etc.
What would users suggest as the sequence settings for the editing timeline in FCP? (If it's a 24p XDCAM EX timeline (no transcoding for the EX-1 footage), then I worry about how FCP will drop frames on the HDV footage and the NTSC footage to make it 24fps). Would it be better to have a XDCAM timeline that is 1080 29.97i (and maybe that setting will better integrate all the footage? Drop everything into that timeline?
Or should I convert all the raw footage to ProRes 422 before editing begins? If so, at what frame rate/format for the three types of material I have?
This is my first foray into mixed media on the timeline...and that's why I am asking assistance on the best way to approach it. Trying to make for the least number of headaches!
Thanks for any help you can offer...
John

NO no no no no no no no no no no no!!!!
DO NOT USE ProRes 4444! Just because it has a higher number and higher data rate does NOT mean that it is appropriate for editing. What is it with people going "it is bigger, therefore it MUST be better." It isn't.
Regular ProRes 422. Not HQ, NOT 444. 4444 is meant as an ANIMATION codec replacement for embedded alpha channel work, and HQ is for 10-bit and 2K workflows. The EX is an 8-bit codec, so ProRes 422 is the way to go.

  • Custom workflow for manual merch projects

    Hi,
Having issues in configuring custom workflow.
In ATG10.0.3 created a custom workflow(editCommerceAssets.wdl) & configured with catalog import job (importing thru spreadsheet & creating a Merch project). This works successfully.
I am trying to configure this custom workflow for manually created projects in BCC.
In the following files I tried replacing commonWorkflow.wdl to editCommerceAssets.wdl.
    <localconfig>\atg\commerce\web\assetmanager\taskConfiguration.xml
    <localconfig>\atg\commerce\web\workflowActivities.xml
But getting this error in pub console:
10:13:23,195 WARN [ActivityManager] The workflow activity with ID /Common/commonWorkflow.wdl has been registered multiple times for the same workflow. Please verify your workflow
configuration as this is not allowed.
10:14:40,453 ERROR [ApplicationManager] There is no application configured with ID '/Common/commonWorkflow.wdl'.
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks!

It is possible that the workflow has already been registered in db before you modified workflowActivities.xml.Did you try cleaning up workflow tables and restart the server??
    epub_workflow_info, epub_coll_workflow, epub_ind_wf,epub_wf_server_id tables
Make sure there is only one entry for each workflow in epub_workflow_info. If there are multiple entries, then it may be coming from 2 different places and you need to disable one of them. Whenever you create custom work flow, copy the existing workflow and modify it and give it a different name. If you are importing programmatically, you really dont need to configure it in taskConfiguraiton.xml ( as it corresponds to settings related to which item-descriptors, tabs, security in BCC gui).

  • Workflow for finishing DV project (G-nicer filter)

    Hi,
Was wondering on the proper (i.e. smartest) workflow for finishing a DV project. Am I totally wrong in using these steps:
1.) Change sequence settings from DV to an uncompressed format (8bit uncompressed?).
2.) Put the chroma smooting filter (Nattress´ G-nicer seems to be the best for this purpose) as the very first filter onto all clips.
3.) Colour correct so that each scene is uniform
4.) Apply (if needed) film-effects filters (again Nattress´ film filter).
Thanks for any input & advice.
    Quad G5, iMac G5 20", G4 QS 867mhz, iBook G4, Mac mini, and a dusty PB 190 Mac OS X (10.4.7) DSR-570, DSR-11, 2x24" Dell and some more toys.

But wouldn´t it make more sense applying the chroma soften before the colour correction?
BTW, I read an interesting post on Shane´s blog, suggesting to not convert the project into uncompressed before the very end of post. That way one enjoys more real-time effects.
So, do you agree that this would make an o.k. workflow:
    1.) Apply Nattress´ G-nicer 1.1 onto all clips
2.) Colour correct so that each scene is uniform
    3.) Apply Nattress´ film filter
4.) Change sequence settings from DV to an uncompressed format (8bit uncompressed?)
Would you recommend colour correcting after the film-filter or before?
Again, thanks for your very helpful input.

  • HELP! FCP Quits every time certain project is opened

I capture and render all of my files to an external hard drive. I have been spending the last few months working on a few projects that I am planning to put together in the end. Anyway one of the projects opens up and loads and then unexpected error occurs and FCP quits. Now with my other projects it is not doing this. I am just a little curious as to why this might be happening. And can anyone who reads this tell me where and how they save all of their files?? I know I am in for some trouble if there is anything wrong with my external hard drive.. thanks for your response

It could be a corrupted QuickTime clip. Have you tried moving or renaming the folder containing the media? It will prompt you to reconnect the media and if it crashes then, that's the problem.

  • Advice on best workflow for large Motion project

I am a part-time video editor/designer/motion graphics creator/etc. Normally, I work on projects with pieces no longer than 5 minutes, even if the projects themselves might be 30-40 minutes of total material--mostly video support for conferences and awards shows.
Right now I am embarking upon a mark larger project--10 30-minute segments, each of which is 100% motion graphics. They all involve a speaker against a green screen for the entire segment with the motion graphics keyed in front of and behind him.
We recorded this directly to hard drive in a studio that had a VT4 (Video Toaster) system, so the best Mac-compatible codec they could provide me for clean green-screening was full-resolution component video. This is giving me great keys, but I also have about 500 GB of raw footage.
In this project, I need to first edit all the takes from each episode into a clean 30-minute piece, and then add the motion graphics. And this is where my question comes in. It seems to me FCP is much better for editing the raw video, but that Motion is where I want to do just about everything else. I need to somehow bring the video into Motion, because I want to create "real" shadows against my background from my keyed footage.
When working with a long project, and with a full-resolution codec, what is my smartest workflow? I am trying to spend the least time possible rendering back and forth, and also avoid generating huge in-between files each step of the way. It seems that any way to approach it has plusses and minuses, so I want to hear from people who have been there which path gets me to my goal with the least hassle.

"Real shadows are only faked in Motion. You have many options including a simple drop shadow or a copy of your matte layer filled with a gradient and a gradient blur applied with a distortion filter so it appears to be projected onto the wall. Be sure to take the time to make this a template effect and to keyframe the shadow angle if the foreground subject moves.

Well, you've got two conflicting interests. One, you have to sync the Motion work with the video of the keyed speaker and, two, you have to edit. But it seems to me that your planning must include lots of design work up front, media you can re-use or modify slightly, text formatting that can be precomped, a large stock of effects you will apply over and over again. Do all of this stuff first.
You also want to explore working at lower rez through your planning and roughing stages. for instance, there's no reason to pull a full rez copy of your foreground into Motion if all you need to do is sync to his audio and get rough positioning. You can put him over black and export all of his clips using any medium to low rez codec at reduced frame rates and just use the Screen Blend Mode to drop him roughly onto your Motion projects.
You'll get lots of advice over the next few days. If you're posting to other Motion or motion graphics forums, please do us all a favor and return someday to all of your threads and tell us what you did and what you learned.

  • Basic workflow for new CS3 project

    Hi,
And thanks beforehand for your help !
I'm going to start editing a video using CS3 on a Dell Inspiron 530.
    2.6 ghz dual core cpu
    3 gig ram
    1 sata HD - 130 gig free
    geforce 8800gt card
This mousy computer is pretty well set up to get the most out of it.... re: indexing off, very little TSR and services related stuff running...
However, I can't upgrade now and am painfully aware that this computer is going to be sorely taxed to edit a full length video ( 1.5 hours finished ).
I should start getting the video in a week or so via FTP.  Those will be about 4 separate 12 gig files.  720x480i DV NTSC.
I don't know if my computer will be able to handle this job but will try, and any suggestions on how to break this work up into manageable pieces for the timeline, and the workflow in general , would be appreciated ....thanks..
    Rod

For DV material this should not be a problem, but make sure you have at least 2 (e)SATA 7200 disks. One for media and one for your project/media cache and previews. You can use an XpressCard to SATA connection.

  • FCP workflow for Sony HVR A1E

Any recommendations for a suitable workflow when capturing HD footage from a Sony HVR A1E camera onto FCP 6.0 and exporting sequence as a quicktime file. It films 1080i and is PAL.
I've had major problems with image quality, ghosting, blurred motion etc with my exported quicktime files. i can see the interlacing clearly!
    My easy setup choices were:
Format: HD, Rate: 25fps, Use: HDV 1080i50 Firewire basic.
My sequence settings are the same.
For exporting i've been simply doing 'export as quicktime file', and i've left it as current settings.
why am i getting all these probs. Ideally someone using a similar video cam can answer this.
    many thanks.

    Dear Nick
I've got the same camera and have not had any such problems.
The HVR A1e can either record audio from the external rifle mic to ch1 or to both ch1 and ch2. You need to check this setting. I think the default is to record to both channels. Let me know if this is the problem.
    good luck

  • Best workflow for Varicam 720P project

Just shot a feature on 2 Varicams and will be using FCP Studio 2 (FCP) to edit our rough cut. The rough will be taken to a post house for final cut, color grading and effects.
We are bringing our footage from both cameras and a seperate audio source into FCP via a 1400 deck with firewire. (The audio is capture direct from Flash Cards)
Should we edit DVCPro HD or go with Apple ProRes? Is there another workflow example that I should be following or consider?
I'm 6 months in with FCP, coming from Media 100 and some AVID work. So FCP is still pretty new to me. Once I have a proper workflow with settings, etc I'm sure I'll be semi-okay with getting a rough cut completed...... I really want to avoid future issues or quality loss.
    Thanks in advance. Jason

Capture and edit DVCPRO HD. Going ProRes doesn't get you anything other than larger file sizes. I work on History Channel shows and Discovery shows and we edit DVCPRO HD native, color correct DVCPRO HD, and then output to HDCAM and D5. Flawless workflow.

  • Lastest FCP Workflow for Canon 5DM2 and 7D ??

I recently made the decision to go 100% with Final Cut Pro over Media Composer and Premier Pro and did a search on how to get the Canon 5DM2 and 7D files into Final Cut Pro for efficient editing without native image or data losses via avoidance of transfer or trans-coding losses. I did the cumbersome task of doing a couple searching and reading some 25 to 60 pages of material on the subject only to learn that one link that supposedly had a complete "solve" is a dead link for some droplets.
So, that brings me to this post, does anyone have an updated 2011 solution that is really been determined to be the "best" solution to achieve the above goals of getting the material into FCP without losses or complications?
Thanks in advance to those who post input to a solve.

    Hi there,
in terms of best way without complications, get the H.264 into pro res before you edit.
establish your workflow as to how to do this, Shane Ross has an excellent tutorial on the subject if you do a search here.
In terms of best quality to use, there are many ways of looking at this - for instance if you are exclusively cutting 5D material and its for web delivery then proresLT is fine, if you are cutting 5D into high end sources then prores HQ may be more suitable for yout.
My own experience is that 5DtoRGB provides the cleanest way of transcoding (at the expense of speed) over the others (Mpegstreamclip, compressor, EOS plugin etc) but thats just my choice - theres an article here
    http://motionlifemediablog.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/5dtorgb-color-tests/
that talks about it in more detail, and theres a good forum here
    http://www.cinema5d.com/index.php
you may want to peruse, particularly with reference to flat gamma picture styles,
bottom line though is to get out of H.264 asap and make sure your sequence matches your source footage!
    have fun

  • Workflow for creating one project that can be burned to both Blu-ray and standard DVD?

    Hi,
I have a 20 minute project and I'm creating a simple single menu with a play button. I'd like to create it once and be able to burn both a 1080p Blu-ray and a standard DVD. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Let me explain how transcoding works for DVD and Blueray.
Encore transcodes the files separately for DVD and Blueray and once the transcode is done and status shows transcoded the options for transcoding are greyed out, this means you have already transcoded the file and you cannot transcode again without reverting to original.
For example you have blueray selected in project settings and you click transcode now from project panel the files will be transcoded for blueray, but after transcoding if for any reason you decide to change the transcode settings and transcode the asset again with different settings you have to revert to original.
But in this case when you want to transcode the assets for DVD you don’t need to revert to original and loose the transcoding done for blueray. You can change the project settings from blueray to DVD after that you will be able to transcode for DVD without losing the transcoded files for blueray.

  • Need help figuring out permissions for a migration project

    Hi all
We are in the middle of a migration from various Exchange environments over to a hybrid Exchange 2010 and Office 365 environment. Recently we had to change the setup for migrating mailboxes from on-premise to on-premise using Quest Migration Manager for
    Exchange using legacy agents.
Dell documentation says to use the below command in order to give access for the agent to open and import mails from a PST into the target mailbox. But it does not work and only after setting the number 2 command will it work. I cant work out what I need
to do on the database so that I do not need to add permissions manually to all new mailboxes.
    Help is greatly appreciated.
    Dell:
    Get-MailboxDatabase | Add-ADPermission -User <User> -AccessRights GenericAll -ExtendedRights send-as, Receive-As
also at the very beginning I was given this:
    Get-Mailbox | Add-MailboxPermission -user Domain\Service Account -AccessRights FullAccess - InheritanceType All
But I cant give every single mailbox this permission. not an option with 20.000+ mailboxes on a global environment.
    What fixes the issue:
Add-MailboxPermission -Identity "user" -User "EUECS\euqmmservice" -AccessRights Fullaccess -InheritanceType all
If only i had a cool signature!! ;)

You want to assign rights to that account for all mailboxes in a particular database?  Try this (where the database is MB01).
    Get-Mailbox -Database MB01 | Add-MailboxPermission -User "EUECS\euqmmservice -AccessRights FullAccess
When you're done you can revoke the rights with the Remove-MailboxPermission cmdlet.

  • Best Workflow for Green Screen Project

    Hi
I have a 13 minute sequence in FCP (filmed in HDV108050i) where the subject is filmed in front of a green screen. I need to use Motion to key out the green screen, which I have done successfully on a couple of 1 minute samples. (I export to QT uncompressed and then import QT file into Motion (As a side point I think the Primatte RT keyer in Motion rocks!)
My question is how do I go about keying the entire 13 min video? I presume I don't just send an uncompressed 13 minute clip into Motion and try and key it (and add other effects as Motion might throw a fit?) The video is essentially a training video, and in FCP I have edited it into approx 12 clips , each clip separated by a transition effect that I don't want to lose (that has happened when I use the send to MOtion project option in FCP)
    Any tips greatly appreciated
    thnks

Assuming you've got a good key because you shot it properly. You're WAY ahead of everyone else.
    Mikeyred wrote:

You can do that as easily as merely bringing the clip into Motion or sending it from FCP. If it were me, I'd bring the raw clip into Motion and render it out using Animation or ProRes4444 which will carry an alpha.

That's not the same thing as your original question about a 13-minute clip. You have not made it clear if your transition is between keys or between segments.
You can't use a transition between clips BEFORE the chromakeying is done. You can create or interpose transitions between the rendered alpha clips but such transitions work a bit differently than full frame clips.

  • Need some help building a game for a school project

I have to build a game called quads.
My java knowledge is not the best there is, so i'm looking for some existing code i could use for my game.
    Here are some game details.
    - The game is played by 2 players (on the same computer).
    - both players have 18 square stones.
    - the stones are divided in 4 sides,
    - each side can be shaped, with horizontal- or vertical lines, gray, or black
    - http://213.73.158.54/plaatjes/stones.htm for some preview images
    - player1 has only gray stones, player2 only black.
    - both players have 1 white stone, wich they have to use first.
    - the game is over when one of the players can no longer place one of his stones on the board.
    What i'm looking for,
I'm looking for a source of a similar game, with:
    - a mouse listener, with te option te rotate the selected stone (0, 90, 180, 270), and to move the selected stone.
    - enable/disable stone collections. (take turns)
PS. if you don't know where i can find a source similar to this game, sites with game souces are also welcome.

    //g.drawString(Bord.bord[0][0]);
    My problems right now are,
    - i can't select more than 1 stone
    - i can't rotate 1 stone (i did rotate them all, but that's a bit useless)
    - i can't make players to take turns.
    - i can't move stones, i can only copy them...
So if i can't use source codes, does anyone know a tutorial for all this?
PS. sorry about the dutch code.

  • FCP Workflow for export to HDCAM SR

I have been asked to deliver a FCP job on HDCAM-SR.
The material will be delivered to me as Tiff / Targa sequences
I have not used HDCAM-SR before so I am not sure what would be the best sequence codec to use.
As I understand it, SR a 4:4:4 format, so Uncompressed 10bit 422 is out of the question.
I am using a Kona 3 on a 3Ghz Quad, but can't see anything suitable in the codec list. Is there another codec I need to get?

There are any number of codecs you can use. The Deck doesn't care what you use...it just receives the signal from FCP via the Kona. You can use HDV, DVCPRO HD, uncompressed, ProRes, XDCAM...anything. THe kona and the deck are codec independant. And it can be either 444 or 422. What you need to send it all depends on what the delivery requirements are.
So what you need to figure out is what best works with what you are receiving.
The material will be delivered to me as Tiff / Targa sequences
Test out ProRes, uncompressed 10-bit...see what works best.
There seems to be very little info out there about HDCAM-SR. Is it a YUV or RGB format?
No clue...beyond my scope of knowledge. I edit DVCPRO HD primarily, and output to HDCAM (not SR). And I have the tech head engineers handle that. I am the creative cutter.

  • Correct workflow for 16 x 9 to 4 x 3 with letterbox?

I want to make sure I'm setting this up correctly. The image looks fine but I don't have a lot of experience with 16 x 9 files. This is my work flow. Receive a Pro Res file 16 x 9 - import into FC 7. Put it into sequence "not" copying the setting of the 16 x 9 file (so video is now letterbox). Export as H264 mov. Thoughts? Thanks.

That's not what I said, but then maybe I misunderstood what you want to do.
Do you actually need to edit this material or are you just trying to make it letterboxed? If you need to edit the material you edit in the correct HD format sequence. You then place the edited sequence in a 4:3 sequence. No exporting is involved here.
