Help implementing an open source component
Hello again!
I found a gauge at http://www.twgonzalez.com/blog/?p=34 that I want to play around with but I have limited experience getting anything that isn't out of the box to actually work . If someone could point me to a tutorial or what not so I can learn to do this I would be grateful!

Putting images in your program isn't slow if you implement it properly. A good example would be Frag Island. They implement 3D textured tiles, and it runs very well on only a pentium 233. You might look at some source code for 3D raycasters (There are plenty around), they perform alot of this using pixelgrabber, and some other tricks.

I am afraid slow performance is a built in feature of this database design, not much you can do in queries.
You could possibly create the views as materialized views and query those instead.

For GETting a file, you can simply use the ftp: protocol with the URL object. Placing the file remotely, you will have to use a separate library. There are several out there you may wish to search on http://sf.net

Any open source component libraries...?
I could very well be getting ahead of myself but I�ve been curious as of late. Are there any Open Source groups out there (that browse these forums) planning on developing some component libraries for JSF? I definitely see the need for some extended functionality in the area of data access.
Yes.... I've been working on one, but unfortunately, I can only do this in my spare time, which has been quite limited lately due to other projects. We'll announce something in this group when there's something worth taking a look at. Right now, there are only about 5 components, and two of these are layouts, containers, rather than widgets.

Help with ati open-source driver :what problems with my xorg.conf?
I removed vesa driver and then :
sudo pacman -S xf86-video-ati libgl

I add me to the group video,add radeon to my rc.conf.
and changed my xorg.conf like that.and then I type "startx",It did work,but the resolution is not right (it should be 1027x768 but I got a resolution 640x480),and I run glxinfo it said :"unable to open display"
I'm sure the HorizSync VertRefresh is right besause when I try catalyst it works well :<

EndSectionOk, seems like you don't use [testing] because in this case x wouldn't even start, because RgbPath in the Section "Files" doesn't exist anymore and has to be removed.
I do always recommend people to disable any kind of options in the Section "Device", if there are problems with the video card. You usually do not have to put radeon neigher into the Section "Module", nor into rc.conf! So remove them, radeon should be loaded because it's set as Driver in the Section "Device"
Your problem with wrong resolution ... I'm not an expert in this, didn't ever have such a problem, but are you sure, that your HorizSync and VertRefresh values are right? -
Need help setting up open source Strobe Player
Iam following the instructions to set up the Stobe player, downloaded the Stobe player 1.5.1, and 1.6.127. I unzipped the files, next step says to copy the files to root directory of server and point to the test file. There is no test file in the directories. I am not sure where to go from here.
Please advise.

Will Sun's c/c++ compiler will be open-sourced?
I know tha this is out of topic. But since the compiler and the processor
are so highly related and Sun has open-sourced the Sparc T1, I just
wonder whether the c/c++ compiler will also be open-sourced. I think
the open-sourced c/c++ compiler will be as helpful as the open-sourced
Sparc T1 to those who are intereted and particiated in the OpenSparc...My computer has the entire drive encrypted. I haven't noticed anything as far as performance. Now the crap the IT puts on the computers is another question.

DLL, jar and open source...HELP!
So...having asked about various OCR programs etc on here, I thought I would just ask something that has been bugging me hugely. I realise I am a total newb, but could really do with some help.
Basically, I have this problem.
I got the Asprise OCR engine working like a treat by copying the DLL to the suggested directory and then linking the jar file to my project as suggested on here. Worked like a charm. However, Asprise OCR has an annoying trial feature that requires you to click a "No Thanks" button every time it recognizes a piece of text. Not too useful when you are trying to see how well an automated OCR app works. To buy it costs over $1000 and I simply don't have that luxury.
So I googled free OCR engines, and came up with two open-source projects, Tesseract [(http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/)|http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/] and GOCR [(http://jocr.sourceforge.net/index.html)|http://jocr.sourceforge.net/index.html] .
I posted a thread on here to ask how Tesseract might be used with Java, and was sent to their forum to ask my question again. However, over a week later, I still have no reply from them.
Tesseract seems to have a DLL but no jar, so seems to not work in the same way as Asprise at all. They talk about makefiles in their documentation etc, but as a COMPLETE NEWB I am really having trouble getting my head around this.
Basically, I think my trouble starts with the fact that I don't really understand how to use the source code to work with Java, and there really isn't much documentation on these engines.
Could someone suggest a best plan of action for me?

:-DMy guess is that to have these DLL's work with your program you are going to have to learn a bit of C++ and how to use the Java JNI library. To some here, this is easy to do, but for others (me), it is very difficulty. Hopefully it will be easy for you. Best of luck.

FLV player component. Open Source/commercial options?
I'm returning to a project I've had on hold for a bit. We're
now receiving
.flv files from our video team and we need to displaying them
on our site.
Can anyone recommend some Flash FLV player components? Open
source
preferred, but commercial or freeware would be OK too if
highly recommended.
I've looked at OSFLV but that appears to require PHP back end
scripts. Our
site is ASP.net so likely wouldn't work.
Ideally, it'd be a player that we could passe the FLV info to
via the HTML
(so that we could incorporate the embed markup automatically
via our CMS
back end).

I beleave first of all you must decide how will you show your
videos.
Do you have FMS? Or is webserver the only you have for your

you don't have FMS and don't like to buy its license, then

possible way is to use HTTP Streaming or simple progressive
download.
And you must seek for a player depending on your choice of

delivery method. HTTP Streaming is a great choice if you

Though you need some scripting language/database engine at

server and some custom SWF (Flash FLV Player). Standard UI

like FLVPlayback will not work with HTTP Streaming. Though it

Open Source Projects Implementing NIO
Searching around Google for multi client NIO servers has lead me to a couple of conclusions. First, there are only a few books on NIO. Second, there are quite a new open source projects that create a framework around NIO, and are designed to make using NIO a bit easier; even some designed for scalable multi client NIO servers.
So I wanted to ask about these open source projects, and see if anyone here has any information on some of them. Ideally I would like to work with one of the open source projects, but determining which are worthwhile, and which aren't by myself would take quite a while. I'm wanting to enter the world of multiplayer games, so I'm not talking about a NIO webserver or anything like that :)
There are a few criteria that are factors to me, and they include the easy of use, documentation, and scalability. A framework that is easy to use and well documented, but scales only reasonably well is equal, if not better, than one lacking in ease of use, documentation, and crazy scalability.

(1) The use of the Configuration.createRootApplicationModule() API is recommended only for console programs, not web applications, but it should work ok as long as your use of the appliation module is completely stateless (which from the code it looks like it is since you release the AM back to the pool on each request.)
(2) You mention "Stateful" mode, but Configuration.createRootApplicationModule() only supports stateless mode, so you are effectively using Stateless mode.
(3) You are passing true as the 2nd argument to Configuration.releaseRootApplicationModule() which means you are asking to immediately remove the application module instance from the pool. This will hurt the scalability of your application since each request will need to be served by creating a brand new instance of the application module.
(4) You are explicitly calling disconnect(). This is not necessary.
I would recommend:
(1) Changing your 2nd argument to releaseRootApplicationModule() to false
(2) Remove the explicit call to disconnect()
(3) Given your usage pattern, I'd recommend calling viewobject.setForwardOnly(true) before calling viewobject.executeQuery() and iterating over the results. This will avoid any caching of the fetched view object results. Also ensure you've read section "27.2 Tuning Your View Objects for Best Performance" of the ADF Developer's Guide for Forms/4GL Developers guide on the ADF Learning Center at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/adf/learnadf.html for more performance tips
For example, if you are fetching 65 rows, make sure the fetch size of this view object is at least 66 so you can retried all the rows in one DB roundtrip. -
Dnd - prevent drops on the source component
I need to be able to prevent the drops onto the source component. Currently I can do this by passing the source component in the transferable, get it in TransferHandler#canImport using a special sourceComponentFlavor and do the trick.
However, this way of doing things does not seem to be along the lines of the dnd support, the source component is not really data to be transported.
Any other ideas? Even better if the no drop cursor would appear while over the source component.

The decision is in following:
The incorrect SQL-statement (with missing quotation marks) occurs when
the SLT system tries to calculate access plans with a generated
function module (e.g. /1CADMC/ACS_001000000000073 in source system). The
function module is generated in the SLT system when the runtime
objects are generated. There is an error in the generation of runtime
modules that causes the wrong SQL statement.
Please ensure that the master job of the configuration TEST2 is
stopped (transaction LTRC in the SLT system, tab 'Administartion
Data', button 'Stop Configuration'), then implement the OSS notes
1990054 and 1992138 in the SLT system.
After you have implemented the notes, use transaction LTRC again and
restart the master job. Then go to tab 'Table Overview', click on
button 'Data Provisioning' and stop the load/replication of the tables
/BI0/AAPO_DS0500, /BI0/AAPO_DS0540, /BIC/AZC_MV_MT00.
When the three tables do not occur in the table overview anymore,
click again on button 'Data Provisioning' and (re)start the
replication of the three tables. The system will generate the runtime
objects again (this time without the incorrect SQL statement), and the
error should not occur anymore when the acces plan is calculated -

Let me add some details to my previous post.
I think people don't appreciate the effort and difficulties involved in open sourcing a complex piece of software. Questions you have to ask yourself are:
- Who is going the use the open source code and for what purpose? And how does that affect the goals and methodology?
- Which parts of the stack do I own and can I release as open source? And what are the legal implications?
- If there are 3rd party components I can't release - are there open source alternatives to fill the holes?
- Without any alternatives to fill in for the 3rd party components, is the remaining open source code functional enough to be worthwhile?
- What license am I going to use and does that license match the expectations of the open source project?
- What related open source projects do I anticipate to interoperate and integrate with and what are the licensing aspects of that?
- What model of participation and code accessibility works best for the goals?
- How do I ensure the code that is in the open source remains up-to-date and useful?
- Are forks acceptable and if yes, how does that impact the project?
- Do I have resources maintain the open source code base?
- Do I want to build a developer community around the code and if yes, what is the participation model for the community?
- Have you double-checked the code and covered all the legal aspects necessary for a release into the open source?
- etc.
I think you get the idea. If you want to create a successful open source project all these questions need to be answered. And one major issue, as rexguo correctly points out, is that a major component of JavaFX (video and audio support) comes from a 3rd party vendor. Are there open source alternatives that could be used instead? If yes, how can that be implemented? If not, is JavaFX useful without high-performance cross-platform video/audio support?
These are all points that need to be considered. Doing open source right is hard and takes time. That's not to hand-wave or preempt the discussion - it's just a reality.

[Solved] Slow graphics with RS780M and open source ati driver
EDIT: Well this is embarrasing. Guess this is why there's a new comers forum. I assumed since I installed a couple days ago my system was up to date. However, running pacman -Syu updated my kernal and it works fine now. SOLVED (I'm an idiot)
Hello Arch community. I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years so know that my hardware can work well enough with linux. Almost everything works great with arch with little setup, but I'm stumped as to how to setup the graphics card.
I'm attempting to use the open source drivers, either xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd (I don't care which I use in the end). I have both installed so I can try out both, assuming that doesn't cause problems. I've never tried using the catalyst driver in arch, so I know I don't have remenents of that causing problems. Right I have gnome working, but when dragging a window, resizing a window, scrolling, or watching a video I can see the screen slowly refresh. It is definetly not right.

I have started an open source project to build a module for
PHP4 that will allow direct calls to Tuxedo services from
the PHP script, the project name is php-tuxedo.
Think about it for a second... The ability from inside a
PHP web page to directly call already existing Tuxedo
services anywhere in your environment. Just like PHP can
open a database connection to Oracle or Sybase, it would
open a Tuxedo connection as a Tux client to a Tuxedo
middleware environment.
For those who have used PHP, you know how easy it is to
build dynamic web pages. But those pages are mostly limited
to database queries or flat file access for data. With this
project you could call all your existing enterprise Tuxedo
services directly. I believe this would be a very powerful
enhancement to PHP's capabilities.
To those familiar with Tuxedo, you know about how powerful
an implementation of Tux middleware services can be for
departmental and enterprise solutions.
I want to bring these two pieces together.
Project status. The project is in its early infancy, but
some parts are functional. I have successfully built a
client page that uses a STRING buffer to call a service with
tpcall and returns a STRING buffer back. Primitive? Sure,
but this is only the start. I have ideas of how to
implement many other functions and buffer types including
FMLs.
There is much work to do, but if you are interested please
check out http://php-tuxedo.sourceforge.net. There you can
download my first cut and more importantly follow the
project as it progresses. For the really ambitious I would
welcome any testing or development help on the project.

Adobe X Pro - File > Save as > Microsoft word > word document doesn't save the data. How can I get the data too? Thanks

When I first open Sg on my Macbook Pro, the screen layout is a mess. I can't find the similar tab that's in Pr that I can drag and move panels and windows around. Is there any way that I can adjust my screen layout? Thanks!
