Help installing iMovie for OSx

I just bought a used iMac running latest OSx and it includes some of the iLife apps (garage band, iPhoto, etc) but not iMovie.  The previous owner explained that the setup 'discs' are partitioned on the HD.
I'd like to access the free version of iMovie that OSx included, but I am new to Mac and not sure how to access the setup discs or obtain the complimentary version.  Everywhere in the App Store, etc it is costing $14.99
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
-Bryan

iMovie is not part of the operating system.  It is part of iLife which comes free only when you buy a new Mac.   If you have the installation DVDs for your Mac iLife should be on them (usually on a disk "Applications Instal").  From what you say it sounds as if there is a copy of these disks on the hard drive in a separate partition.  This will appear as a separate volume (for example under 'DEVICES' in the side bar of any Finder window).   Most older versions of iMovie still work under Mavericks so you should be able to instal it but I can't guarantee.

  • Ho do I import .iMovieTrailer file to iMovie for OSX

    Hiya,
With the recent update for iMovie for iOS including more trailer styles, I have created a trailer on my iPad which I would love to edit using iMovie for OSX. So I have a bit more control and fine tuning over the trailer.
Currently the 'Scary' themed trailer is not available directly in the OSX version. Hence me starting on an iPad in the hope I can export it into the OSX version.
With a project or trailer I can press the Share to iTunes options which makes it available for me to save the project/trailer files to my desktop.
If the iMovie is a project it can be opened in the OSX version using the File --> Import --> iMovie for iOS Project
However I tried the same menu option for the trailer file and it does not work.
So a a project with the file extension .iMovieMobile is able to be imported but a trailer with the extension .iMovieTrailer can't.
Has anyone managed to import a trailer, if so I would love to hear how you do it.
    Cheers,
    Warren

    Hiya Thanks for that,
I have just submitted this as a suggestion using that link you sent me.
I suppose if anyone else comes across this thread, please do the following:
Mark the top item in the thread as 'I have this question too'
And submit the problem/issue as a suggestion to Apple using the form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
The more that Apple are made of aware of the issue/feature request the more likely it will get some attention.
    Cheers,

  • Installing Itunes for osx 10.1.5

    hello,
I've got osX 10.1.5. I've lost my Itunes and I try to install the version iTunes 4.0.1 from this link :
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120134
But it doesn't work. I've got I-tunes 2.0.4 on os9 but I want a better version to download on i-tunes music store.
If someone can help me to found a version between 2.0.4 and 4.0.1 it will be nice.
    Thanks.

I would suggest you try iTunes 4.7.1, which is the most current version available for Mac OS X 10.1.5. If that still won't install, post back with details ("doesn't work" isn't much to gon on) and we'll see if we can help you sort it out.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need Help Installing XAMPP for a localhost Wordpress environment

Hi there guys, I have a bit of a complicated post, so I'll explain everything I'm trying to do.
First: I am installing XAMPP so I can install Wordpress on my local site. From what I know, the reason I am doing this is so I can preview everything from my local host, without uploading files to my server. If that is wrong, please let me know.
The directions apache friends can be found here.
I notice there is 2 Installers to successfully download this. I downloaded and unzipped the first one and installed the .pckg file it contained. The 2nd one is sitting on my desktop.
    1) XAMPP Mac OS X 0.7.2
    Installer Version
    Universal Binary
    2) XAMPP Mac OS X (tar) 0.7.2
    Universal Binary
This is what the instructions say for me to do next:
    +Step 2: Installation+
+After downloading simply run the following commands in a terminal:+
    +Installation requires an admin account.+
+# Enter „sudo su“. You will be prompted for a password.+
    +# tar xfvz xampp-macosx-0.7.2.tar.gz -C /+
+Notice: all old installations of XAMPP for MacOS X will be overwritten!+
+That's all. XAMPP is now installed below the /Applications/xampp directory.+
It says I have to open the "Terminal".... I navigate to Applications-Utilities-Terminal
The command it tells me to type in is unclear in my mind. Nothing is working for me. I am trying these commands:
    # (press-Enter) „sudo su“ -
    *-bash: ,,sudo: command not found*
    *garrett-leyenaars-powerbook-g4-12:~ GarrettAren$* - +It gives me this+
Can somebody please clarify exactly what the command is? Im pressing "#"...then im pressing the "enter key"....then entering in.... ,,sudo su"
I want to start designing some Wordpress themes...and therefore need an environment where I can work locally. It wouldnt make sense to FTP the files all the time, right?
The part I'm confused on is precisely what the command is. The command is supposed to install the second download folder.
If somebody can read the instructions here and give me an explanation of what to do in English, I would be super appreciative. I am 21 years old. I know HTML and CSS pretty well but this is all greek to me as Im a newbie. Thanks in advance.

Hi Garrett, I don't know much about xAMPP, just noticed what was needed in Terminal, (went through the same Noobiness myself once! ).
Perhaps Anthony or one of the others will be by for some help on the rest of your problem.
PS. My pure guess is that you don;t need to do anything special before sleep.

  • Need help installing OS for Macbook

I have a black Macbook. I'm not use to using Macbooks, trying to fix it for a friend.
    The model is a1181.
When I try to boot it up it just has grey screen, apple logo, and spinning gear.
    Nothing ever comes it.
Another friend gave me the Macbook OS X Install DVD with Mac OS version 10.5.6
Disc Version 1.0 so I can try to reinstall the OS.
When I press C the disc boot up but it can't install
Well it didnt work. I read from other posts that even same model Macbooks may have different CDs.
Everything else is wiped out from the Laptop. I can't even click about Mac or nothing.
Only title bar is Mac OS installer.
    Can't restore to early version.
My only solution is finding the right OS X CD (which my friend doesn't have) and install it so it can work again.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Do I go to an Apple Store and buy a disc? Will they help my install it in the Apple Store?
    I desperately need guidance.
    Please help.

    DubSeide,
The Snow Leopard disc will do a clean install just fine. All you need to look for is the $29 single-user disc. There is also a family set for a higher price--you don't need this one.
10.6.3 is the current retail version available.
You need to have a working DVD drive in the computer and at least 1GB of RAM in the MacBook.

Gatekeeper is preventing you to install Microsoft Office > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290
To install Office, you have two possibilities:
    1. Open the installer as I told you on the first comment.
    2. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, and set "Allow applications downloaded from" to "Anywhere"

  • Need Help Installing Quicktime For Windows

I bought Quicktime Pro for Windows and want to install it.  When I reach the permissions dialogue box in Windows 7 to grant permission to install the software my mouse freezes and I can't move it to select "Yes" and proceed.  Any thoughts on a way around this issue?
    Thanks,
    Bob Z.

i get a prompt saying "the feature you are trying to use is on a resource that is unavailable." and then it goes on to say.. "Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'quicktime.msi' in the box below."
Unfortunately, these sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing QuickTime again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Mail.app crashed after installing update for OSX 10.8.5.

When I open it it starts to import the mailboxes but crashes after about 10 minutes when about a quarter of the messages have been imported.
Please advise me how to restore Mail.
    Thanks

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
In Finder, hold down the option/alt key while selecting Go from the Finder menu bar. Select Library. or select Go to Folder and paste in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Select Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
    Information learned from Linc Davis.
You can make your user library permently visible with the following Terminal Command.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • Enable Bootcamp to install from usb for OSX 10.9**WORKS**

So basically, I have trying to install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

do you have multiple partitions on your USB stick? And what partition table does it use?
I have two windows installers. One is on a 4GB single partition fat32 formatted stick, and one is on a 5GB partitions of a 500GB USB HDD. On the USB HDD I have windows as second partition. First is OSX installer. I noticed that I can boot in BIOS mode with the 4GB USB stick, but not with the 500GB USB HDD.
So try a windows formatted USB stick with a single partition. See if that works.
Be carefull with google.. In the last few days I have been researching some bootcamp related things and there is waaaay more wrong information of people that tell others what they 'heard' than that there is right information of those who know how stuff works.
I am of the 2nd category btw. I only tell you what I know for sure. If an '06 macbook with ODD can boot of of USB into BIOS mode, then so should you.
Edit: The reason the Windows EFI installers says it found an MBR partition only is because by default the disk is in GPT mode with a 'protected' mbr so that non-gpt aware programs wont look and scream "free space! ".
In order for Bootcamp to install in legacy BIOS mode it converts this 'protective' MBR into a "hybrid" MBR. If you download the open source app "Gdisk", install it, and type "sudo gdisk /dev/disk0" in terminal you will see there is either a protective or hybrid MBR on the disk.
Formatting a disk to fat32 with any OSX tool (BC Utility or disk utility) will convert the protective MBR to Hybrid MBR.
Gdisk allows you to reset this to a protective MBR as described here: http://superuser.com/questions/508026/windows-detects-gpt-disk-as-mbr-in-efi-boo t
Hybrid MBR: Full Bootcamp compatibility. OSX knows whats up and decides everything. Windows installs in legacy BIOS mode on an MBR type disk.
Protective MBR: Bootcamp utility and OSX are not used since they would convert the disk to a hybrid MBR. This mode is compatible with booting in EFI mode. EFI compatible Windows versions (7 partially, 8 completely) will live alongside OS X, for the most without problems. And will install on a GPT type disk.
Hope to have helped you with this. Took me three full days of non-stop reading to figure this out.

Edit 2: Make damned sure you have a backup of your system. Messing around with partition types and tables shouldnt hurt when you know what you're doing. But since I know this for three days, and you apparently havent found this yet, I think it's safe to say both of us aren't yet 100% sure of what we're doing .
