Help! My D drive short no space

I only have 6% left on my D drive. I know the diver is for memory only and nothing related to memory should be deleted. I suspect that somewhere a long the line I have caused something to be added that is taking up space. So far I have not been able to find what programs etc are on the D drive. When i go to programs it shows what is on the computer but not what drives they are on. I would appreciate any help as to finding what is actually on the D drive so thati can then decide if there is anything that can be deleted with out affecting recovery. Also anything I should be beware of in making decisions to delete. Thanks very much for your time and help.      Al Ashton[Personal Information Removed]

The Recovery partition is meant to have very little extra space. It is setup to only hold the Recovery folder for recovery of your OS and all programs when needed. The limited space has no affect on your laptop's performance since it is an inactive partition, not used at all by Windows.
Before doing anything at all with the partition, I would suggest burning your OS Recovery DVD set as outlined in the link I posted above. Better still, burn your OS Recovery set and just ignore the limited space on Recovery partition. The Recovery set will be needed to reinstall if the hdd fails and requires a replacement.

  • Need Help Recovering Hard Drive Space on Disk Utility

I recently wanted to resize my Boot Camp hard drive partition as I did not need it to be 194 gb. In the process I screwed something up and now that space that was once my Boot Camp Partition is now "free space." My Mac Partition still says that I have 305 gb left and I am unsure how to expand this partition to get back that "grey" space. I've tried using Boot Camp Assistant, starting with Command+R after the "chime," and restoring my OSX (not completely however).
I need help in getting back this missing space. It seems that I have looked everywhere and although people seem to have a similar issue I can't figure it out.
Would restoring Mountain Lion completely by using a USB jump drive solve this problem? I have an external hard drive that uses Time Machine to back up my MacBook so a complete restore shouldn't be an issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
P.S. This is what my disk utility currently looks like...

You can try to use Boot Camp Assistant to completely remove the Windows partition but it might not work.
Simple fact is once you setup a Windows partition you can't fool with it at all, that is unless you use some add on program specifically designed to do that on a Mac computer. If you need to resize the Windows partition you first need to use BCA and remove the partition completely and then recreate it at the new size you want and reinstall Windows.
You might have to use Time Machine and backup your Mac partition then repartition the complete drive and then restore from that Time Machine backup. Then setup the Windows partition and reinstall Windows.

  • I'm using Aperture for photos on my Mac, I have near 450G of raw photos and I'm running short on space, what is the best option to imrpove proformance and increase space.?

I use Aperture on my Mac and have approx 450Gigs of raw files for my photos and growing. I'm running short on space and system is starting to slow down. What are the best ooptions to improve performance and increase space space.?

important to note that what you are talking about is not a backup
It is simple to ahve your iPhoto library on an external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
And you can have multiple i{Photo libraries - one can be on your internal drive and other on an external drive  --  iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  is a very helpful tool for managing multiple libraries

  • Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"

Moved iTunes library to an ext hard drive to make space on my int drive... Followed steps from apple.  Now I cannot access my music... It says: "File could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"
I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page.  It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following:  "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found.  Would you like to locate it?"  I click locate but do not know where to go from there?  I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it.  I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer.  What to do???  Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

  • Hard Drive Short DST Check: Software Error

Hard Drive Short DST Check: Software Error appears while performing Hardrive Test in HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1090ee. Please advice on how to resolve this error

Same issue here. Only I've tride a brand new hard drive and get the same results. Within seconds of power on, it shuts off hard. Sometimes the backlight comes on and it gets to the HP logo, then bam - out go the lights!  I can go into the BIOS and stay there a long time. I run all the diags and make changes. Once, it actually stayed on and booted up. I downloaded the latest BIOS update, flashed it, and rebooted. It didn't help. Also, tried to boot to a bootable Windows 8 thumb drive. Same results, shuts down after 3 seconds. Tried many times to boot to external USB CD/DVD drive,  never succeeded.  The only error any diag reported was Hard Drive Optimized DST Check: Software Error. The fan spins at almost top speed but not immediately; it takes about two seconds after power on for it to start. I don't know, but that seems to be a clue. The only time I had a successful boot, the fan didn't engage at top speed, but a few notches slower.

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 C: Drive Install Disk Space

When I install Photoshop Elements 6.0 to my E: drive the install still consumes about 500 megabytes on the C: drive where I am short on space.  Is there any way to lessen the amount of space it uses on the C: drive?  Thanks.

Why are you using the E drive?
The normal location is C drive in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on 64 bit Windows.
The installation also uses hidden system files in AppData and Program Data.
I recommend you stick with the standard installation, but by all means have your image files on E drive or an external hard drive.

It sounds unlikely of course. But from your question it's hard to tell what might have filled your HDD. Are you constantly on file sharing or has filled the drive with movies?
Best way to tell is to start checking what folders occupy space. "Get Info" for the HDD and its subfolders is a way to start checking where the data in question resides.
And as BGreg say, call Apple support is also a good way to begin with.

  • I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?

I am trying to burn CDs to an external hard drive to conserve space on our laptop. When I change the file location it says the destination folder on the external drive is invalid. Am I missing a step?

It does, but that's definitely strange.  Try showing all hidden files and folders on your Mac to see if that helps.
To do this, head to Applications -> Utilties -> Terminal and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE -> Press Enter
    killall Finder -> Press Enter
Then navigate out to your iPod again via the Finder. Any luck now?

Help, my hard drive is about to die and icloud won't let me sign in it's saying "you can't sign in becauseof server error"

The best approach would be to take the iPad to the school's IT person and see what is going wrong, why it will not accept your sign-in.  That person can make sure the userid and password are correct on the iPad.

  • Hard drive short DST failure

    Hi,
Yes, the 24 character error code for the Disk Self Test ( DST) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
If you are is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.

  • I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive; is it possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my mac?

I was going to install Rosetta Stone Spanish onto my Macbook 10.6.7 but am concerned about it taking up space on my 2GB hard-drive.  I have an external WD hard-drive, and I was wondering if it is possible to put the application onto the external hard-drive to save space on my Mac?

I think you're confused about how much hard drive space you have.  You probably have 2 GB of RAM...  there hasn't been a Mac shipped with only a 2 GB hard drive in a while.  At the bottom of any Finder window, how much space is available?
If you're actually running low on space, you should move documents to the external drive, since many applications want to be on the system drive.

  • Can i Move 20,000 Photo's to either iCloud or External Drive to clear space on hard drive

    Hi
We operate older Mac (abt 6 yrs)  with OS X 10.7.5
Getting message "startup disc is full".
We have Twenty Thousand (20,000) photo's on it.
Can we move them either to iCloud or to a external hard drive to clear space.
If so how & is it easy to acces & work with them
    Thanks

After you move the library, you should seriously consider getting a drive to back up your library. All hard drives fail sooner or later and you do not want to lose 20,000 photos....
