Help needed in file tx from MBP with blacked out screen to ext. HDD

just got off the phone with Apple .... seems like I might have a cursed NVIDIA graphics card in my Macbook Pro 2007 model (2.4GHz core2duo)
had basically kept my MBP ('07 model) in sleep mode when I went to office. When i came back, the white light in the front wasn't pulsing anymore and it was replaced by a bright constant white light - proceeded to open the lid... and the screen was totally dark ... tried a few key combinations in random to get it up and running but to no avail .. then checked a few forums on this issue... seems like lots of ppl have the issue but a lot of them also managed to get the screen back on by resetting the SMC and PRAM (which I proceeded to try) ... unfortunately hasn't worked for me despite multipe resets of the SMC and PRAM. Gave Apple a call and all things point to the graphics card having conked out ... this ***** big time!! ...
The worst thing is that after switching on my machine, I can still load software by doing the keyboard shortcut for spotlight and typing the application ... e.g. itunes is working and I'm still managing to play songs through myh machine.. only issue is that the display is totally dark...
Now.. my big issue before I send it across to the service centre is backing up my "Downloads" folder....
Can someone help me with how I can go about doing this through terminal ? I think I just might be able to pull it off with the keyboard if I get sufficient and specific help!!!!
basically I'm looking for transfer of all contents from "Downloads" folder to an external hard disk with the name "Active" ...
help would be greatly appreciated!
Any suggestions on methods of backing up my data would be great!!...
Also, are there any precautions I should be taking/ things I ought to be wary of when sending my machine in to an authorized service centre?

Does your hard drive spin up? And do you have access to another MAC?
If so, you could see if you could mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop using FireWire Target Disk mode:

Also mount an external drive equal or larger than your internal drive on the host Mac. Then use a cloning utility like Super Duper on the host Mac to clone your internal drive onto the external drive. This will give you a backup of everything that is on your internal drive--it will be an exact copy. This would take some time, but would likely be the best way to back up everything on your drive.

Also, they will likely elect to thoroughly test the machine and do any repairs that are necessary, which could possibly include replacing the hard drive. If you have any sensitive data on the drive, you may even want to erase it before sending it in just on general principles.

Hi All
Just found out from the forum that if your Apple IPad2 goes into a black out screen mode, you may be able to fix it by spanking it.
I had taken it to the Genius Bar and they would have replaced it but was out of warranty.
So taking it out of its case I gave it 5 slaps to the back of the unit with my open hand.
Supprise the when I turned it over and pressed the power button the Apple logo appeared.

MBP Random Black out Screen [ONLY ONLINE]

Hello everyone,
My Macbook Pro Early 2011 15 inch i7 with 8GB RAM at the moment is experiencing some trouble. When I'm watching videos online, the screen goes black after a few minutes. I know that the Early 2011 are famous because of faulty Logic Boards, but I don't know how to make the Hardware test without the disk.
And also, this problem started when I updated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. When the blackscreen started, I rebooted the PRAM and SMC, but sometimes it didn't do the trick, and It stayed for hours to the system booted. After I Downgraded from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, this issue didn't happen for 3 or 4 complete days, and it happened again now in Mountain Lion. So, Hardware or Software issue?
Well to summarize:
PROBLEM: Blackscreen only when watching videos or anything flash format on the internet.
SYMPTOMS:
Blackscreen Only Online When Watching videos that are in flash format, or any page that has something inside of it that has flash format (Example: Simulators Online).
Not rebooting: Persistent Blue Screen or No Safe Mode booting or After PRAM or SMC Rebooting no booting.
QUESTION: Hardware (Logic Board) or Software Issue?

Give it a glance and you'll see that many others are having the same problem with 2011 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. Basically, the solder on your GPU to logic board has cracked. In the end, you won't be able to boot at all (if you've not already reached that point).
Some people have been lucky enough to get a free logic board replacement. Unfortunately, many people have also gone through 3-4 logic boards and the problem is never solved. A replacement logic board is not a 'fix.' The only fix that seems to last any time is a BGA reball of your GPU. I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

If the file was also on a mac, then there was a local copy of the file in ~/Library/Mobile Documents. If you use Time Machine or any other backup program on your computer, then try restoring the file(s). Similarly the same thing would be done on a PC, but I'm not sure where the icloud local copies are kept.

Help needed for file processing using FTP

I am new to ODI tool and currently we are implementing one project in ODI. Could you please, any one help me on the following requirement... how to implement it?
Scenario:
i) I need to pick a file from remote host 'outbox' dir using FTP process, and place into local 'temp' dir. (I can do it with odiFTPGet tool)
ii) Change the file as per target business requirement.??? ( this step challenging me)
for ex:
if source file name : <project name>_<source ID>_<transaction name>_<unique id>.txt
target name should be : 1234_<transaction name>_<sysdate in yyyyMMddhhmmss>_<unique id>_2345.txt ( here 1234 and 2345 are hard coded values)
iii) Later move to local 'temp' to local 'outbox' dir. ( I can do it with odiFileMove tool)
iv) After successful process move the file from remote 'outbox' to remote 'archive' dir ??? (again this is challenging me).
For this my questions are:
1) How to get file name into a variable ( In one of the post , it says we need to create data model and data stores, and interface to get the file names into a file. apart from is there any easy way i can implement it in package it self?)
2) How to tokenize a long string ( i.e., need to tokenize the source file to get <unique id> and <transaction name> and map to target file name)
3) How to define implementation for Java in user function?? do we need to use class declarations and import statements?? I need a sample user function in Java.
4) How to move/rename a file in remote server?? ( need to move file from remote 'outbox' server to remote archive' dir)
5) If any step in package fails, How to get the error msg into a variable which i can use for sending mail and raise a ticket in remedy?? ( I will pass that variable to as content to mail and remedy ticket)
6) How to handle list type data (string list) by variables in ODI?? (As we can define single variable not as list.)

Some help needed regarding Files and URLs on a server

I don't get it - my applet works in a local directory, but not on a server. This has to do with the loading of files (I load an array of images to use, but when I attempt to use that array, it comes up with the error ArrayIndexOutOfBounds), but I can't understand what the problem is...
I have a code that loads files (using File objects) from the current directory (a .jar file) into the program. I do not simply type in the file names - I set it so that the program searches for them based on a prefix in the file name. This works fine on my computer, and I never navigate to files outside of the .jar file. Why might this have a problem on a server? Would URL objects be more appropriate?
Note: I alter the file base String in this way before loading it (this stands for the current directory)
fileBase = applet.codeBase.toString().replace('\\', '/');codeBase is simply the applet's codeBase() method put into a URL variable. The replace statement is there so that there are no backslashes. And this works perfectly on my computer. Any help? Would it work if I used a URL instead? If so, how do I perform a search function with a URL (so that all the filenames within a certain directory are returned as Strings)?

Thanks for the info, it helps a lot. You say there is no "practical" way to search for a file under a URL path. What I am trying to do is load a file that begins with a particular prefix. (eg. I wish to load a file called "funnyImage0011204924." However, the numbers after the prefix "funnyImage" are variable, and might require change in the future. Is it possible to load any file with the prefix "funnyImage," using URL methods? Would I need to create a new class? Is this impossible?)
Please remember that I do not plan to go outside the .jar file, so there is no point in trying to get around server permissions and all that if it is unnecessary.

Help needed, various bugs in itunes and with my ipod

Hello, I thought this would be the best board to post this since the problem is mainly associated with itunes. Simply, my itunes library has been erased completely including songs purchased from the itunes store. However, for those who think they may be able to help me, I will give some more details.
I am sorry for the amount of text, however I feel it is better to give all details now than have to keep answering questions. Please bear with me, this problem has caused me a lot of inconvenience, and I would love to get it fixed.
1 week ago I followed a link from youtube to purchase a song from the itunes store. I trust this link to be reliable in the sense it had no viruses or the like. However, upon doing this, the itunes configuration that appears when you first install itunes. I followed the prompts to agree to the terms and conditions for itunes (from my memory, I was not particularly concentrating at this time). Then the wizard closed and itunes popped up. My library was completely empty. I closed itunes and reopened it, library still empty. I restarted my computer, same again. I then spent a while trying to add my music back to itunes, however lots was not on my hard drive anymore.
I then tried using a utility I found online to extract songs off my ipod to my computer, as my ipod had all the songs from my library that I wanted back. This worked partially, because of the effectiveness of the program.
I then tried to use an old library file as advised to based on a basic google search. This restored lots of the files, all sorted, as they were not sorted when I got them off the ipod. However, lots of the files now come up with an exclamation mark next to the name, indicating the file cannot be found. I have searched for these files, and they are nowhere on my hard drive or recycle bin.
Now, I was annoyed and inconvenienced by this greatly however I still had all my music on my ipod.
Then my ipod (second gen. ipod touch) crashed. The music presumably became unreadable or corrupted because the ipod showed no music on it. I had to restore the factory settings on my ipod, and now I have lost a lot of my music. I have tried to restore from one of the backups itunes created, however this did not restore my music, in fact, I don't know what it did.
So in summary, I have lost a lot of the music which I bought off the itunes store. This is greatly distrissing. Additionally, my ipod will not sync all the time now, with an error stating "the disc is unreadable" or words to that effect. I would really like to get my music back, and it would take a very long time to list all these songs in an email to apple asking for free redownload of these songs I already purchased. I would like to know if there is any way to get my songs back, explanation of what happened, how I can prevent this, any advice really. I understand I should have made a backup on another computer or external hard drive, however I believed that the 'backup' of the songs all on my ipod would be suffiencient. Please help if you can, I have already spent about 7 hours searching and working to fix this problem. It would be so very much appreciated.

When I imported the files the first time I did type the new genre in the genre field of the info box. You can either choose a pre defined genre or type a new one. As soon as a new one was entered it is available in the drop down for any future imports.
I have around 15000 songs assigned to the different genres. For only a couple of 100 I have the problem which I described.

Help needed - Missing Files in Aperture

Hi All:
A quick question: I initially imported RAW files in to a new project. During some time I was doing adjustment to these files, a subset of these files disappeared from the browser (I checked under "all image library" and the project). I can't remember if I inadvertantly deleted them from the Library.
However, the strange thing is that I still have these files in the Aperture Library (I have checked and confirmed that they are physically in the Library and they are not referenced files).
How would I bring these files back to be shown in Aperture ?

I wanted to ask anyone (close to this issue) if they've had the problem I've had after upgrading to ver. 1.5.3. Once this upgrade was done, and I opened Aperture, I noticed that lots of photos seems to be missing. specificly from July of 2006 to current. These photos were stored in several projects that I created simply listed as months (ie. 0701-Photos) meaning Jan of 2007 photos, etc.
These projects and their photos are not to be seen now. I'm hoping there're on my hard drive somewhere. I've tried to rebuild library but no luck.

Help needed: renumbering files

I need an Applescript to renumber files in a large set of nested folders. For each of the nested folders, I would like the script to change the name of each TIFF file to X01, X02, X03, etc. Other types of files should be unaffected.
For example. Let's say I have Folder A containing three TIFFs and Folder B. Folder B also contains three TIFFs. The script would renumber the TIFFs in Folder A to X01, X02, X03 and would also renumber the TIFFs in Folder B to X01, X02, X03.
The numerical equence of the file names should be maintained. So file "70.tif" would become "X01.tif", file "74.tif" would become "X02.tif", and file "243.tif" would become "X03.tif".
Currently there are no file names which start with "X" and so I don't think I need to worry about name conflicts.
I've been using Macs since the 80's, but this is my first time posting.

What device is upstream from the router? If you have a modem that acts as a router as well, then you might have a double NAT problem. It's a well documented problem and can usually be solved by bridging the modem or configuring the router to work as a switch only.

Ringtone help needed -- Galaxy 3 - downloaded from VZN and cannot find

Downloaded Ringtones for Samsung Galaxy 3 cannot find on phone. How do I find them and activate them. Did come thru as attachments in a TXT msg from Verizon

FIGURED IT OUT! Not easy to figure out at first. Also, I see where Verizon's ringtones expire after 12 months, so you may want to manager your finances accordinly...
******Essentially you need to copy it from your dowload folder to a ringtone folder. Then set it as your setting for sound.****
Go to Apps icon --> Choose MY FILES folder icon
Select file folder called "SDCARD0"...
Select file folder called "DOWNLOAD FOLDER"...the ringtones from Verizon were downloaded in here. Scroll down to the to your ringtone... it will be listed by the name of the ringtone song.
Select the ringtone you downloaded. You'll have to complete action using Google Play Music or Sound Player. I chose Soundplayer just once. The song will play. You can pause it.
Hit the SETTINGS KEY on bottom left of you phone on that next to the raised button.
Select SET AS and chose to save it in the PHONE RINGTONE.
To activate it,
Hit the SETTINGS KEY on bottom left of you phone on that next to the raised button.
Select SETTINGS
Select SOUND
Select DEVICE RINGTONE and it will be in the folder!

Help needed to insert data from different database

I have a requirement where i need to fetch data from different database through database link .Depending on user request , the dblink needs to change and data from respective table from mentioned datbase has to be fetched and populated .Could i use execute immediate for this, would dblink work within execute immediate .If not , could pls let me know any other approach .

What does "the dblink needs to change" mean?
Are you trying to dynamically create database links at run-time? Or to point a query at one of a set of pre-established database links at run-time?
Are you sure that you really need to get the data from the remote database in real time? Could you use materialized views/ Streams/ etc to move the data from the remote databases to the local database? That tends to be far more robust.

MBP Periodically blacks out with a faint "hardware" sound

For the last couple of days, my (approximately 2.5-year-old) MBP's screen has been blacking out periodically. When it blacks at, it does so for 2-5 seconds, and is accompanied by a very quite, and I mean the faintest - I don't know what else to call it - "hardware" sound? A bit like the sound one gets when one's Macbook Pro is starting up, but neither as loud nor as extended. Furthermore, this often happens while I'm writing, and the last two times it has occurred I have continued to write while the screen is black, and once it returns, I notice that what I have written has been truncated (for example, I am writing "anthropocentrism" and, once the screen comes back on, what I see is "anentrism." And yes, I DID hit all the keys. I'm a very accurate typist and this sort of thing has happened on more than two occasions). Does this have anything to do with the last update Apple released prior to the release of Lion? I can't remember exactly when I installed the last update, but there might be some correlation there. I just hope this doesn't have anything to do with my hardware...
If it's any help, I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M (or is it 9600M GT? System Profiler is showing both) graphics card, although, as my description above would indicate to ME at least, it is probably not a problem with my graphics card.

Exact same specs as Mika on my powerbook, and I just recently got the exact same buzzing sound. It sounds like it is coming from under / near the trackpad. Sometimes it is quiet, and other times it is louder.
Running the diagnostic shows no problems. It sounds like a fan with a loose bearing or something else that is rotating and either hitting something else, or not working as it should. It started all of a sudden, and I'm quiet worried about the situation of the computer overall.
In general, almost the exact same problem as the O.P. and none of the solutions I've seen seem to correct it. I suspect it may have something to do with the video card, but I could be wrong (say an extra fan on it). Otherwise perhaps the harddrive, but I would have to know what the internals looked like to pinpoint it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: After looking at another website to pinpoint where the sound is coming from, it is almost CERTAINLY coming directly from the hard drive.

The hard drive is directly under the trackpad in the G4 Aluminum. Well, looks like my recent backups haven't been for nought.
