here is the query with Four tables as outer joins

This two queries runs fine....but the second query gives correct records(WHICH IS WHAT I AM EXPECTING)
The previous query gives 4 records less.
Does Oracle support outer joins with out subquerys in the from clause or i am doing some thing wrong here(I mean syntax error)
DO I need to write subqueries for every outer join to get the correct record.
If I do outer joins with one or two tables with out subqueries.....I do not have any problem

There are two issues. First Oracle supports outer joins against one table. This means you can do this:
where a.col1 = b.col1(+)
and a.col2 = c.col2(+)
and a.col3 = d.col3(+)
but you can't do this:
where a.col1 = b.col1(+)
and b.col2 = c.col2(+)
because this outer joins to more than one table.
The second issue is that you must outer join to all columns of a table. So you can't do this:
where a.col1 = b.col1(+)
and b.col2 is null
but you can do this:
where a.col1 = b.col1(+)
and 'X' = nvl( b.col2(+), 'X' )
null

    Now I want to select for each ID in table 1, the count of number of PID from table 2 and count of number of PARID from table 3.
    Desired output:_
    ID | COUNT_PID | COUNT_PARID
    1 | 4 | 2
    2 | 2 | 1
    3 | 0 | 0
    Could anyone please help me out with this. I am trying to make use of outer joins, but as I work mostly on the front end so, not able to come up with a proper solution for the above.

    You might have been doing the outer join correctly.
    There's another problem here: joining table_1 to two other tables with which it has a one-to-many relationship.
    If you were joining table_1 to just one other table, you could say:
    SELECT       t1.id
    ,       COUNT (t2.pid)     AS count_pid
    FROM              table_1     t1
    LEFT OUTER JOIN  table_2     t2     ON     t1.id     = t2.id
    GROUP BY  t1.id
    ORDER BY  t1.id;You could have done the exact same thing with table_3 instead of table_2.
    But you can't do the same thing with both table_2 and table_3 at the same time: that would be like cross-joining table_2 and table_3. Instead of showing id=1 having count_pid=4 and count_parid=2, you would get cout_pid=8 and count_parid=8 (since 8 = 4 * 2).
    You can do a separate GROUP BY on (at least) one of the tables.
    This gets the right results. In the main query, there is only one one-to-many relationship.
    WITH  t3_summary     AS
         SELECT    id
         ,       COUNT (parid)     AS count_parid
         FROM       table_3
         GROUP BY  id
    SELECT       t1.id

    so far this is what i've come up with and the code below does not work. Can anyone please help me on how the sytanx of left joins and how to use multiple left joins in a single query in oracle?

    Here's my best guess - and it seems to me that it should work as there are not two outer joins between any two tables. I hope I decoded your joins correctly - quite a mess that Access syntax!

    As an architect-dude, it seems to me that you have a serious
    modeling problem to need so many outer joins in such a basic
    grab of data. In any scale other than minute, the performance
    of this model will suffer dramatically. Specifically, why can't
    ROSTER have an equijoin with TEAM and with TEAM_STRUCTURE - as they
    appear to be lookup tables...

    I am referring 2 regular tables from the HR schema which you get when you install Oracle 9i , Now the issue is that I want all the rows from my employees table even if the row doesnt have the salary equal to 2500.
    Here is my Sql:

    Why do you want to use "oracle only syntax ( + )"? I highly recommend you to use ANSI syntax, it's much more readable:
    This is from Oracle's documents:
    Oracle recommends that you use the FROM clause OUTER JOIN syntax rather than the Oracle join operator. Outer join queries that use the Oracle join operator (+) are subject to the following > rules and restrictions, which do not apply to the FROM clause OUTER JOIN syntax:
    You cannot specify the (+) operator in a query block that also contains FROM clause join syntax.
    The (+) operator can appear only in the WHERE clause or, in the context of left-correlation (that is, when specifying the TABLE clause) in the FROM clause, and can be applied only to a column > of a table or view.
    If A and B are joined by multiple join conditions, then you must use the (+) operator in all of these conditions. If you do not, then Oracle Database will return only the rows resulting from a > simple join, but without a warning or error to advise you that you do not have the results of an outer join.
    The (+) operator does not produce an outer join if you specify one table in the outer query and the other table in an inner query.
    You cannot use the (+) operator to outer-join a table to itself, although self joins are valid. For example, the following statement is not valid:

    SELECT employee_id, manager_id

    This query gives me result like

Furthermore i would only like to see the items that are repeating invoice numbers, in other words my result here should still only be, because "SUPPLIER_INVOICE_NO" is repeating and it does find a match for the po in the invoice table but yet there is an item with the same invoice and po in the po table that does not have a match in the invoice table.

  • Help with outer joins? NVL?

    HI,
    I have two reports I am creating, one for October and one for november.
    The query is below so you can see what I am trying to do. There is a difference of about two hundred accounts, I want to see which accounts were in October and not in November. How can I view the different accounts and list them along side the november accounts or if this can't be done, how can I at least see the accounts which differ between the months? I am thinking that I need to build one report as an inline-view in the from clause, and then do an outerjoin on that aliased table, but am not sure on the syntax. Also, how can I use the NVL function to put in a value for the NULL columns?

  • Left outer join issue, please help

    My oracle DB : 10G
    I have 3 tables:
    1) w_orders_fs
    2) w_product_d
    3) w_order_f

    If you want to outer join to a table, you have to include a ( + ) on each of its columns in the where clause (or cope with them possibly being null). Personally, I find ANSI syntax easier to work with when dealing with outer joins:

           , p_d.product_id p_d_product_id
           , p_d.row_wid_skey p_d_row_wid_skey
           , o_f.product_wid_skey

  • Query with FULL OUTER JOIN , help pleaseeeeeeeeeeee...

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to write a query for a report in Oracle SQL, but i just can't figure out how to do it.
    I'm using Oracle 10g release 1.0 database and i execute my queris in SQL* PLUS ( eventually i'm gonna use them in Oracle Report Builder ) .
    here's what i have:
    i have four tables that are used for our inventory application. lets call them INCOMMING , INCOMMING_ITEMS , OUTGOING , OUTGOING_ITEMS.
    as you may have guessed , INCOMMING_ITEMS is the detail table for INCOMMING ( joined by IID column) and also OUTGOING_ITEMS is the detail table for OUTGOING ( joined by OID column ).
    here is the structure of them :
    INCOMMING
    IID varchar2
    CDATE date
    INCOMMING_ITEM
    IID varchar2
    PART_NO number
    QTY number
    OUTGOING
    OID varchar2
    CDATE date
    OUTGOING_ITEM
    OID varchar2
    PART_NO number
    QTY number
    now , the query i want, should return part_no , cdate , sum of OUTGOING qty , sum of INCOMMING qty .
    the result of the query should be sth like this :
    part_no     cdate     O_qty     I_qty
    100     01/05/06     10     0
    100     01/05/07     20     60
    200     01/06/02     0     50
    300     01/06/02     30     40
    this means that for some dates and for some parts, i may not have INCOMMING or OUTGOING data, but if at least one of the 2 last columns has a non-zero data, i should show the row ( like the first and third rows of my example result), and if both have data for the same PART_NO and the same CDATE, both should be showed in the same row. ( like the second row in my example result)
    i tried so much and came up with several huge and also time consuming queries, but then i read abt FULL OUTER JOIN somewhere and tried using that. here is what i came up with :

    this query is short and fast , but the results r not what i expected. i mean, although i have used FULL OUTER JOIN in the query , but the results i get r sth like this :
    part_no     cdate     O_qty     I_qty
    100     01/05/07     20     60
    300     01/06/02     30     40
    which means only the rows that has both values are returned.
    any change i make to this query would make the SQL* PLUS hang , like when i use the cartesian product of two large tables, so i guess my changes wheren't in the right direction.
    i think its possible to write this query using FULL OUTER JOIN syntax, but i just can't find it.
    Can anybody pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee help me?

    It seems your dimension is not joined to any facts. Did you check your BMM/physical joins?

    As SB pointed out, you'd better provide tables and data in order to be helped more efficiently.
    Anyway, you may want to investigate the use of NVL and/or DECODE so that you can translate NULL into valid values so they are returned to your select statement.

  • Left Outer Join Help...

    Hi Everyone,
    I am still in the process of learning SQL, and I am having trouble specifically with the the left outer join.  I normally join tables using equijoin's, but I am not getting the right data set returns, and thought the using a left or right outer join would resolve the problem...
    Here is my SQL that is working properly with 1 left outer join.  I am building the query slowly so in the next SQL you will see where I am seeing the error.  I don't expect you to understand the data and columns I am trying to join, I believe the problems I am experiencing are related to syntax, and I am hoping you can find where my syntax errors are.

      sv.view_name as "View Name",
      s_view.name

    "Oracle style" or "old style" joins have commas between tables in the FROM clause, and the join conditions are all in the WHERE clause.  They do not use the keywords JOIN or ON.
    ANSI style joins have the keyword JOIN between tables (sometimes accompanied by other keywords, such as LEFT, OUTER or CROSS), and the join conditions are given in the FROM clause, usually after the keyword ON.
    The first example you gave is an ANSI style join.  It has the JOIN keyword, not a comma, between tables.
    The second example you gave:
    s.row_id = sv.screen_id
    could be part of either.  It could occur in an ANSI join (in the FROM clause, after the keyword ON), or it could occur in an old-style join (in the WHERE clause).

  • Need help with an Outer Join

    I have the following query which has an outer join and it works perfectly and shows publication paragraph which don't have any maintenance records with a value of 0.
    However when I add to the where clause conditions such as lpm.fac_ident and lpm.start_date, the null values no longer show up in the query(see second SQL statement).
    I am new at SQL and am just trying to make this outer join work. Any help would be appreciated.

    ORDER BY count(l.publication_paragraph);Leaving aside the missing join, the reason why your query as posted does not work is that when there is not a match on m.paragraph_alias_mapping = l.publication_paragraph Oracle will "make up" rows form lpm with all null columns for each row in lpm_paragraph_mapping_table where there is no match. So, when you compare those made up rows from lpm, you are effectively saying where NULL = 'EWR' and TO_CHAR(NULL, 'yyyy') = '2010'. Null is never equal to anything. Any comparision against null is unknown, so the made up rows get filtered out by your predicate.

    I do not think that query is doing what you think that it is doing - on first inspection, it was not doing what I thought either due to the order in which the UNION and MINUS operators are performed. If the FILECREATEDT column is defined as a DATE, your query is relying on an implicit date conversion - in such a case, you should replace:
    filecreatedt='18-feb-2011'With:
