  • Installing Win XP on Satellite L40-18Y

I have bought a Toshiba Satellite L40 - 18Y from vodafone along whit the preinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium. I want to put Windows Xp but it sems that the installer doesn`t recognize the HDD ( in BIOS appears the HDD ). I
`ve shearched other threads and found answer but seems that doen`t work. I have a USB flash disk. My flash is seen as a boot one and I can install windows on it to :) .
Some help pls to install Windows Xp ( to see the HDD ), and pls if can say links to all programs that I have to download and what to do the noobis way :)

Installing a Retail (street copy) version of Windows XP on a Vista Toshiba Laptop.
If the laptop has a separate BIOS version for XP and Vista, download and flash the XP BIOS over the Vista BIOS.
If XP Setup does not detect the SATA Hard Disk, simply turn on SATA Compatibility Mode in the BIOS if this option is available.
If that option is not available, you need to use SATA drivers on a Floppy Disk during XP Setup. Follow these steps:
    1) Download the Windows XP SATA F6 driver from the Toshiba Support/Downloads Website.
If an individual F6 driver is not available, download and unzip the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver. The Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver package should contain some folders under the "F6flpy" folder. For example: ICH7M_32bit for an ICH7 based chipset when installing Windows XP 32bit.
    2) Copy the F6 driver files (iastor.inf, etc..) to a blank floppy disk. The actual files must reside in the root directory of the Floppy Disk. For example, A:\iastor.inf, A:\iaahci.inf, etc..
    3) Use a Toshiba USB Floppy Drive with the Toshiba notebook. (some non-Toshiba USB Floppy Drives may not function properly during XP setup)
    4) Boot from Windows XP CD-ROM, start the installation and ensure the floppy disk is inserted in the USB Floppy Drive.
    5) When XP Setup prompts you to press F6 to install a Storage Driver, immediately press F6.
    6) When XP Setup prompts you to select a SATA driver, select the appropriate driver and continue. For example: ICH7M Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller, ICH8M Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    7) Keep the Floppy Drive attached and Floppy Disk inserted until XP has completed its installation. Do not Partition or Format the Hard Disk during XP Setup. The SATA drivers from the Floppy Disk are copied and stored on the Hard Disk during XP installation.

  • Re: Satellite L40 - Black screen after updating BIOS

    Hi everyone,
I have exactly the same problem as reported here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-euro...threadID=35156
My portable is a Satellite L40-150 (Model PSL48E) It came with Vista and BIOS version 1.60
I updated the BIOS to version 5.50, because I wanted to install Windows XP. The BIOS update process went fine and the computer automatically restarted. Upon restarting, I entered the BIOS (pressing F2 key). I pressed F9 to load default settings and exited the BIOS, saving the changes.
The laptop restarted and the screen is now completely blank. Nothing appears in it.
I tried removing and then reinserting the RAM modules, but it didn't help.
So, I guess the only option is to return the laptop to a service center?
Why is Toshiba doing this? Are they doing this on purpose or what?
    Regards.

I meant why is Toshiba releasing a BIOS upgrade that can render your laptop useless? (I've tried all the recovery methods they mention on their web, including turning on the laptop while pressing F12, but none of them work)
I've routinely upgraded the BIOS on all the computers I've owned through the years, and I've always reset the BIOS to its default settings right after upgrading. It's a procedure recommended by all manufacturers.
They all recommend to restore BIOS defaults after an upgrade because sometimes there can be some "leftover" configuration remaining from the previous BIOS version.
I upgraded the BIOS prior to installing Windows XP because it's the logical thing to do. Toshiba offers two different BIOS versions for my laptop, and the clearly state that one of them is compatible ONLY with Windows Vista, and the other one is compatible ONLY with Windows XP.
Could you tell me why should I install Windows XP on a laptop that has a BIOS designed for Vista? Common sense dictates that you should first upgrade the BIOS, and then install Windows XP.
I've contacted Toshiba's technical support and they will replace the laptop free of charge, because it's still under warranty.
I admit I'm satisfied with their customer care services, but I'm surely disappointed by their Quality Control. It has failed miserably in this BIOS release.
    Regards.

  • Re: Satellite L40-18X PSL48E: brightness goes back to max after every reboot

    Hello,
    i have Satellite L40-18X, short model: PSL48E
bought it with Vista, the bios is version 1.70.
There is very annoying problem with the brightness regulator of the display:
Every time i restart the Vista OS the brightness is set to Maximum and i have to switch it back to smaller brightness.
By hibernating the OS there is no problem - brightness is just fine as i leaved it - the same percent.
The Fn keys + F6 and F7 are working fine, in OS and in BIOS - everywhere, but after i start the OS the brightness is on the highest level
Absolutely the SAME problem is in windows XP (with the same bios 1.70) - Fn keys are working fine, but when os starts - brightness is always on Max level, by hibernating is OK.
    Can you give me suggestion?
Now i don't want to reflash the bios, because on the website there is older version 1,60 for Vista and i cannot have the mine version.
    Appreciate any help :)

You are right, the power profiles in vista have brightness regulator, and from there
the problem is fixed :) Thanks.
Now stays the Windows XP sp2 with the same brightness problem. All drivers are working
    - wlan, sound, everything - I've downloaded the xp drivers from the site.
    I installed these:
    1)ATK Hotkey Driver\2ksetup.exe
    2)ATK Hotkey Utility Driver\Setup.exe
-hotkeys are working, but same problem by reboot of OS - brightness @ Max level
    I checked what apps start automatically - D:\Program files\ ATK Hotkey\Hcontrol.exe
starts - it is responsible for the hotkey menu. I tried with and without this app -
but no fix. Any other suggestions? (In power profiles of Win XP there are no settings
for brightness :( ) Will the problem be fixed if i install the XP bios, because as I said I doesn't want to install another version, because i will loose my "new" 1.70 bios
    (not available for download)?

  • Re: Satellite L40 PSL48E: Can I create a installation disk from Vista partition

    Hi,
my Satellite L40 PSL48E came with a Vista recovery partition.
As I despise Vista I bought a replacement drive and installed a new hard-drive and installed XP pro.
I retained the original drive in case i ever had to claim under warranty.
I now find that due to work commitments I have to occsionally use the despised Vista rubbish and wonder if it is possible to create a Installation disk from the partition on the original drive so tha ti can create a dual boot system on my new drive.
I am very reluctant to BUY a new Vista CD since I already have a fully legal copy on a drive which I am not using and I will only use it VERY rarely for this one work commitment.
    Any information gratefully received
    Thanks Ron

    OK and thanks.
My next problem is this. I have XP on the main partition and WinRE on the hidden partition. How the heck do I get at the hidden partition. I don't have any boot disks ( none were provided with the machine when I bought it new. Pressing F8 only takes me the the normal XP options Safe boot boot as normal etc.
I've tried f10 and f12 and f11 tas I've seen these suggested on a few newsgroup posts. Anyone got any ideas please.
Toshiba Recovery Disc creatoe seems to be the key from what i read but if this is not present how do i get to the hidden partition and run it?
HELP please. How i hate the fact that manufacturers don't provide a proper CD or DVD anymore it is a right PITA.
    Ron

  • Satellite L40 (PSL48E) - Doesn't reboot after BIOS update

    Hi,
My problem is that I update the BIOS and after that the machine does not restart. ( BIOS corrupt ? )
After the BIOS update (Satellite L40 PSL48E) the machine reboot and with the F2 key I open the BIOS setup.
I check the BIOS version ( 5.50 ) and exit the BIOS setup. The machine must be reboot now.....
No Way, the machine does not restart . No screen only the powerled lights-up.
Is there anything I can to fix it on my own like a BIOS reset ?
    Thank you for cooperation.

This is strange because after the BIOS update you could go into the BIOS.
However, try to remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor. Wait one hour and then put the battery in and connect the AC/DC adaptor. Try it again.
If it doesnt work there is something wrong with the BIOS or hardware and should be checked by a notebook technician.

  • I can't turn the Wifi on, Satellite L40-18Z

    Hi there,
I've been using Satellite L40-18Z but I can't turn on Wifi.
I'm very sure that Tthe device is installed propery and I tried some ways to turn on Wifi device but never turned on. Of course, never catched the signal. Rooter has no problem either.
Deveice manager says ithe device works propery. And the driver is correctly installed. But I can't turn on from windows mobility centre or network setting.
It's very embarrassing to post something like this but I need your help.
P.S. this is the first time I post on this thread but who answers? Toshiba support team?
    Thanks,

I have the same problem. Does anyone cope with it? Have my wifi disabled can't switch it on, tried to reinstall it nothing work.
Have it installed and work correctly thru device manager. Wifi can't be enabled and find network, all other devices are working properly. Access point have no limitation or something else in their settings.
Windows diagnostic can't resolve this issue. Shows that "wifi is still disabled on this computer" FN+F8 doens't wotk too.
Any help are more then wellcome.
I suppose this is Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter bug within Thoshiba Laptop.

  • Satellite L40-14H - Black screen after updating BIOS

    Hello!
I have Satellite L40-14H (PSL48E) notebook. I have installed WindowsXP, it worked ok, except the digital keyboard was turned on permanently so I couldn't type a couple of symbols. Than I decided to install special BIOS for WinXP, that have downloaded from Toshiba web-site. The PSL48x model is in support list. Alter flashing from Windows and rebooting, I entered to BIOS to see what changed. I've seen nothing new, so I exit the BOIS and reboot again.
Since that moment, the notebook turns on, but the screen doesn't, it is black :-(((
Please help me, how can I back it to live?
    Thanks, Eugene.

Hi, i have exactly the same problem. I have tried everything but with no success. Am really getting annoyed with this as the computer is only 10 months old and i can see that there are several people on these forums who have similar problems. Dont mean to sound negative but it dosent make me want to choose a Toshiba again in the future. Will try the customer support tomorrow but not really expecting much.

    Hi
    Just one tip;
If you need an office application then I recommend OpenOffice.
Its open source software similar to MS Office and you can use and download it for free!
    Back to your Pain issue;
Paint is a part of the OS Windows. Its not possible to uninstall this.
The paint.exe file is placed in c:\windows\system32\ folder
It seems to be an OS error.... possibly the system is muddled up....
try to clean the OS using the CCleaner...
it cleans the registry and maybe it helps to get rid of this error...
otherwise you will need to reinstall the OS...

  • Satellite L40 won't shut down with power connected, and won't go in standby

Hi everybody. I hope someone can help me. Basically, there are two problems: one with shutting the laptop (Satellite L40-17U (Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1) ) down when the power is connected, and one with closing the lid and putting it to sleep.
    1. Since a few weeks, it suddenly doesn't want to shut down, whenever the power is connected. When it is on battery, it will shut down. When the power is connected and I try shutting it down, it seems like it shuts down (all activity ceases and the LEDs go off) for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then it goes back on.
    2. When I close the lid (all settings in Vista are set to put the laptop in 'sleep' status when the lid is closed) the laptop goes into a state from which it can only be recovered by shutting it down by pressing the on/off button for about 10 seconds to completely shut it down. When closing the lid, only the battery LED keeps blinking orange (the way it should be), but apparently the laptop keeps consuming power, because when I reboot it later (first having to shut it down as described above) the battery tends to be quite a emptier than it was before rebooting it (like going from 100% to 65% in 30 minutes, while being in 'sleep' state). Also, when I open the lid, the other LEDs do go on again (green), but nothing happens.
After rebooting by first pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds to shut it down, I frequently get a message that Windows could not be started, and have to run System Repair.
I've just done a completely clean installation with the product recovery CD (didn't install SP1 yet), upgraded the BIOS to v1.90, but the problem remains.
I'm afraid my only option will be to bring it away for a warranty repair, but knowing that these repairs can take weeks, I'd prefer to try a solution anyone here could recommend me first. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Daniel Breslauer

    Hi guys
Never had such issue on my notebook but regarding to another users here in the forum the BIOS might help to solve such strange notebook behavior
To be honest the shut down issue is not known to me I noticed an standby issue on my notebook but the BIOS update helped.
Therefore I recommend updating the BIOS firstly.
If the issue will still appear, then the ASP should take a look into the notebook.
    Good luck

  • Satellite L40: How do I recover files from Hard Drive

    Hi
Can anyone help me please. About one week ago I started experiencing a clicking sound coming from my Satellite L40 laptop. My laptop froze and when I restarted it, I was directed to the system setup with a message at the bottom saying
"Pri Master Hard Drive Disk SMART status bad, Backup and replace.
    Press F2 to presume."
    I have pressed F2 but I haven't a clue what to do?
Can anyone tell me how to backup my files before my hard drive has completly gone or if it has gone can I use another device to get them off.
I have tried to use the recovery disk but the disk is not responding??
    Please help
    Pete

    Hi
This messages looks like an warning notification from the S.M.A.R.T.
It does mean that your HDD will eventually fail.
It could happen next days or it may not happen for a few months but the SMART capability has detected that the drive is going bad so it should be replaced as soon as possible.
It looks like your notebook is not very old so the warranty should cover all replacements.
I see only one way to access and backup the data. Possibly you could buy an external USB SATA HDD enclosure and could connect the HDD to another computer.
Im not sure if you will be able to access the HDD due to the malfunction but if you want you could try this.
    Good luck

  • Lan and WLan does not work on Satellite L40-18W

    Hi all
I have TOSHIBA Satellite L40-18W and my problem 1- wireless not work & wired lan does not work.
I have download driver and every thing is ok but it does not work ( when i search by wireless i do not find any network. My router is working fine)
    plzz help meeeee

    Hi
Its hard to understand what you mean by not working.
    What does this mean exactly?
Are you not able to connect to the internet or what?
Usually if the WLan card and the LAN card have been recognized properly in device manager then the drivers are working fine and the issue could be related to wrong router configuration or maybe to some enabled firewalls, etc
Firstly I recommend checking the router settings. Check if the router has been configured with the right data from ISP and if all other common options have been set correctly.
The notebook supports Realtek Wlan and LAN card.
Check if Wlan card uses the same WLan standard like the WLan router and if right encryption has been used too.

  • Installing Windows XP on Satellite L40-114

I just bought a Satellite L40-114 for home and education. I just found out I need windows XP for some scientific applications and the VPN software for access, so I tried to install it. I was really disappointed Toshiba does not seem to deliver XP drivers for this laptop. I managed to get the sound working for what its worth (sound skipping) but hotkeys and video drivers is not working at all.
Anyone who had more luck installing Windows XP on this laptop?

    Hi there,
I cannot help you regarding the hotkeys but in case of videodrivers you should visit www.intel.com for video drivers since your machine has an intel 900GMA video chipset.
Just go to the Intel website and download drivers for that chipset, it should work.
Would appreciate some feedback on your success.
